The White Sox have designated right-hander Tayron Guerrero for assignment, the team announced. The move makes room for outfielder Luis Robert, whom the White Sox signed to a long-term contract Thursday.
This ends a very short run with the White Sox for the 28-year-old Guerrero, whom the White Sox claimed off waivers from the Marlins on Dec. 6. Although Guerrero’s average fastball approaches 100 mph, he hasn’t been effective in the majors since he debuted in 2016 with the Padres. Through 106 innings, including 46 in 2019, Guerrero has only managed a 5.77 ERA/5.08 FIP with 9.42 K/9 and 5.69 BB/9.

Happy New Year, 2020!
Now lock up Madrigal!
Idioms for Idiots
Amen to that!
StandUpGuy
So they acquired him and then released him before he even had an opportunity play in any game or spring training or even practice? Why acquire him in the first place if your not gonna give him an opportunity to even try and make the team?
Dabofus going to the Padres game
Claimed and teams typically claim.and release players all the time during the off season.
They got him for nothing.
DarkSide830
no reason not to have a full 40 in the offseason. dont make a move and you hold the 40th man. make a move and you dont lose anything in having kept him.
MrStealYoBase
You can acquire him, DFA him and, if nobody claims him, you get to keep him in your minor league system.
dbogs2000
Could have picked Adam Engel to go and held the high potential pitcher before even pitching and learning from Sox coaching.
wordonthestreet
Really Standupguy? You think this is unique? Happens all the time.
seamaholic 2
Dangerous game to start making big dollar commitments to guys who haven’t even played in a MLB game yet. Not a ton of reward (the Robert contract only adds one year of control) and some pretty nasty downsides if you guess wrong.
MikeS2
There are always risks, but much, much bigger potential upside.
On the upside, they don’t have to manipulate service time. He can start against KC in CF 3/26. They don’t have to worry about him being great and getting big arbitration awards, or “super-2” status. If they are bad but he is good, they can trade him for a big haul like they did with Sale, Quintana, and Eaton.
Potential downsides are very small compared to that. If he is hurt or bad, they are out about $50M/6 years which doesn’t affect their ability to do anything else. And that assumes they get literally NOTHING out of him.
The vast majority of these deals have turned out well for the clubs. The Red Sox are going to pay Mookie Betts roughly $60M for 6 years, then he is going to earn another $50M plus over the next two, not to mention the 5 plus years after that someone is going to guarantee him. They wish they had signed Betts to this deal 5 years ago.
whitesoxfan24
You won’t be saying this if Robert reaches his potential and his arbitration number is 25 million in 2025. I just hope he stays healthy!
Thomas Bliss
Imagine if Eloy stayed healthy last year. 31 homers and 2 stints on the DL. I hope they both stay healthy this year and have healthy careers.
maximumvelocity
Locking up Madrigal makes zero sense.
He is never going to put up the type of numbers that lead to a major arbitration pay day.
Here’s an idea. Call him up now, and let him complete for the starting job in Spring Training. Start investing in player development and stop worrying about five years from now.
Priggs89
Here’s an idea. Sign him to a reasonably priced extension based on his position and skill set.
maximumvelocity
Why?
If he doesn’t consistently hit for a high average, he’s going to be an average player, due to his lack of power.
Stop playing service time games that have as good a chance of blowing up, and just put out the best roster on opening day.
And draft better and have better player development, so you don’t have to worry if they walk.
Priggs89
Why not?
If he does consistently hit for a high average, he’s going to be an excellent player, even with his lack of power.
Stop acting like service time games are something new. Everybody with a brain does it (sorry Padres fans). If you believe in the kid, show him. Offer him the same deal Anderson took and get him on the opening day roster. Even if it “blows up,” they are’t going to be hurting because of it.
“And draft better and have better player development, so you don’t have to worry if they walk.”
Man, you should tell Hahn that. He probably doesn’t know it’s that simple.
Thomas Bliss
They drafted him because he is a middle infielder that constantly gets on base. He does what is supposed to do than pay him and get him out there. Then sign Moncada to an extension.
maximumvelocity
I wasn’t aware players couldn’t make an opening day roster without an extension.
Need to me.

Priggs89
Now you are. You’re welcome.
jnoch2008
Moncada needs to be locked up. madrigal is not a cant miss guy!
MikeS2
There has to be another move coming as well. As soon as the Encarnacion signing becomes official they will need to cut someone else off the 40 man roster.
Maybe Dylan Covey?
blacksox
Or Ruiz. Or one of the catchers besides Grandal and McCann
MikeS2
I doubt they would DFA a 26 year old catcher. Those guys are just too valuable, even flawed ones. They might trade one. They get two slots back on opening day when they move Lambert and Rodon to the 60 day IL, but that won’t help now. One of those spots probably goes to Madrigal eventually and the other maybe to an as of yet unsigned reliever.
I bet it’s a pitcher. Fullmer is out of options and even if he makes the club, may not have the control to stick all year. He has to go through waivers to get sent down. Maybe they just cut bait on him now. Hamilton couldn’t make a bad bullpen last year, but is only 24. Fry walked 7 per 9, but is 26. Cordero is 28 and has only managed 56IP. Covey is 28 and has never been better than rotation depth. Hererra would cost them $10M. Plenty of guys on that list that are probably never going to be useful major league pitchers.
Priggs89
Hamilton was hurt in a car wreck in spring training and never able to get fully healthy. He was dominant in 2018.
Fry was really, really good in 2018 and is a lefty. He’ll get another chance.
Cordero looked more than capable when he was called up.
Herrera is making too much money to be let go and actually looked decent to end the year.
There’s no point in letting Fulmer go for nothing while Covey and Ruiz are still on the roster. If anyone needs someone to throw 100mph batting practice, Ruiz should be their first call.
MikeS2
I don’t know that anybody is going to give them anything for Fulmer, but otherwise I agree with most all of that.
Fulmer just can’t throw strikes and they can’t send him down again to learn how because he is out of options. So he either has to learn on an MLB club that seems to think it is going to be competitive, or he is gone.
Thomas Bliss
Dude we have 5 guys listed at catcher on the 40 man roster. Yasmani Grandal, James McCann, Zack Collins, Yermin Mercedes, and Seby Zavala.
MikeS2
That is because catchers are hard to find and therefore valuable. Both Zavala and Collins played in MLB last year so have to be on the 40 man. Dropping them off exposes them to waivers and they would be gone. Mercedes is in the organization because Baltimore didn’t put him on the 40 man and the White Sox picked him up in the Rule 5 draft. Do you want to emulate Baltimore?
McCann may very well be gone in 2021. They will need a backup. Would be nice to have 3 to choose from.
Relievers, on the other hand, are a dime a dozen and have short careers. Don’t get attached to Covey, Ruiz, or Fullmer.
Priggs89
I’m perfectly fine with letting Seby walk.
jnoch2008
I agree 100 %! Zeby is horrible!!
Priggs89
Hopefully Ruiz. He can’t get big league hitters out.
Thomas Bliss
I believe that’s a possibility. I believe we have 5 or 6 on the 40 man.
IronBallsMcGinty
I wish they’d move on from Covey. Detwiler too.
jnoch2008
Deteiller not on 40 man rosrer
sox-papertrail
Detwiler isn’t on the 40-man. We have him a minor league contract for 2020, but that’s it.
Ryne Huff
Welcome to Kansas City!

Hopefully the next move will be to lure Bee Bee Richard out of retirement…
canocorn
Tayron Guerrero only with CWS for a whiff of coffee.
Thomas Bliss
They wanted to see if they could get some strong Columbian coffee from his home country.
