The Rockies have agreed to a minor league contract with infielder Kelby Tomlinson, Thomas Harding of MLB.com tweets.
The 29-year-old Tomlinson is best known for his run as part of the division-rival Giants, who selected him in the 12th round of the 2011 draft and with whom he played in the majors from 2015-18. Tomlinson hit .265/.331/.332 across that 687-plate appearance span, but he totaled a meager three home runs at the same time.
Aside from the Giants, Tomlinson has spent time with the Mariners and the Diamondbacks (yet another NL West team). So far, Tomlinson has batted .279/.343/.329 with a pair of homers over 1,056 trips to the plate. He hasn’t played in the majors since 2018, but perhaps a trade involving all-world third baseman Nolan Arenado – which seems like an actual possibility – would help him return to the sport’s top level.
I remember on one of the MLBTR Live Chats a few months ago there was a guy whose favorite player is Kelby. To whoever that is, congratulations.
Was he a Rockies fan
Was it rockiesfan28? Because he’s three comments below you.
That was me!! I’m so happy yay
If Arenado’s traded, Tomlinson sure as heck ain’t getting the every day 3B gig. That would be McMahon.
Oh my god yes Arenado’s replacement
Yes my fave player on my fave team!
Are you being serious? Just curious
He’s genuinely fin to watch. He hits like a whiffle ball player.
What a goofy lookin dude
Tomlinson’s gonna need a VISA to catch this one
Lol good one
Tomlinson was on of the many failed draftees from the Sabian/Evans era in SF, he’s a AAAA player and I’m surprised he’s not in Korea or Japan.
A bit of hyperbole, or do you really think there’s a “on[e] of many failed draftees” narrative to be spun about this onetime 12th Round pick?
@champion…I don’t think he was a failed Sabian/Evans draftee. Not a superstar, but a solid infielder with a solid glove and bat. He could catch fire, or more likely be passable backup for the Rockies starters. Decent signing. I wish him well!
agree, he is a bench player but had a lot of clutch performances at key times.
Because every 12th round pick is an All-Star, right ?
Anytime a 12th rounder even sniffs the majors it’s borderline miraculous lol
Rockies got a good dependable role player.
He had some big hits and defensive plays for the Giants. Always have a good at bat, and had good speed. Good luck to him, just not against the Giants.
Kebly is so awesome!
Kelby (aka I called him Clark Kent but many Giant fans call him Specs ) is a fun player, did have some good key moments as a Giant, and clutch ones. Agreed. He is enjoyable to watch as well, kind of a effervescent personality. He does have a sweet swing & a good line-drive hitter. Wish him well as the Giants fans miss him!
