The chase for Pedro Strop may not rate as national news, but it’s an important situation in the context of the remaining relief market. Perusing the slate of still-available pen pieces should convince you of that.
The group of pursuers was defined recently and seems now to have been culled again. The Marlins and Rangers are the two final clubs in the bidding, according to Hector Gomez of Deportivo Z 101 (Twitter link), with the Brewers and Cubs evidently exiting the picture.
For the Fish, Strop would represent something of a finishing flourish to an offseason full of bullpen movement. The Miami organization has dumped a whole lot of talented but unreliable younger hurlers and obviously has interest in plugging in a late-inning veteran.
Should he land instead in Texas, Strop would help buttress a unit that still has some uncertainty. Jose Leclerc and a resurgent Rafael Montero provide some potential fire at the back of the unit, but it’d be nice to pair Strop with Jesse Chavez to lock in some sturdy frames.
Strop has been a steady performer for years now, though he’s coming off of a down 2019. With injuries limiting his availability and effectiveness, the 34-year-old managed only a 4.97 ERA. More than anything, he (like many of his peers) was suddenly prone to the long ball, allowing about twice as many per nine innings as he had over the preceding five years. And a fairly significant velocity decline gave some cause for concern. But it’s not hard to envision a quick bounce back if Strop is at full health, as he still proved capable of inducing an enticing mix of swings and misses and groundballs.

I’m assuming he’s waiting out the Cubs/Bryant ordeal. He likely has ML offers at a low salary-1.2mm for 1yr. Cubs may offer more when the funds become available.
DarkSide830
Fish really making a push for 4th this year.
darmstrong92
If you ain’t fourth, you’re last
Good Guys
The Marlins have some good young starting pitching. In that division, if they do finish 4th, it will be a sad year for the team that finishes 5th.
MarlinsFanBase
I’ve said it a few times. I’m not 100% sold that we’re in last this year. We realistically expect it, but the Marlins are reversing things in the rebuild, plugging up holes, and play in a division with 2 teams that can easily implode.
MetsFan22
LOL!!! Marlins are about to lose 100 games…
MarlinsFanBase
Think we’ll catch the Mets record for 100-loss seasons?
BTW, I’ve seen Mets fans like you. Talk big during the offseason, then turn on your team’s manager, GM, owners, and players by midseason, then disappear from the boards until the offseason.
MetsFan22
Since 2000 the marlins have 2 100 loss seasons. Mets have 0. Marlins are about to have 3 meanwhile the Mets are playing October baseball. And I won’t go anywhere lol
MarlinsFanBase
Since 2000, the Marlins have a championship. The Mets have none. Since 1986, the Marlins have 2 championships. The Mets have none…and the Marlins didn’t start until 1993.
Oh yeah, and the Mets have a grand total of six 100-loss seasons, with one streak of four in a row, which includes the worst season in MLB history. The Marlins only have 3 separate seasons of 100 losses, and have never had two in a row.
MetsFan22
Again your talking about the past. Never go past the last 5 years. It looks bad. The last 5 years and the next 5 years. The Mets will have a better record than the marlins in every single year.

Funny thing. In 1998, Mets fans swore the same thing then. That didn’t turn out so well for Mets fans. They didn’t stick around for that either.
MetsFan22
Funny how you’re looking at 1998… looks the rosters of both teams. It’s day and night.

MarlinsFanBase
Yeah, it’s day and night. You’re window is closing while the Marlins rebuild is reversing. I’m guessing you’re making statements without even knowing what the Marlins have.
No worries, in the next couple of seasons, you’re going to start seeing.
Remember what they say about history. Those that don’t study it are doomed to repeat it. Your fan base thought we had nothing in 1993 and 1998 and in the years leading to the arrival of Stanton, Jose Fernandez, Yelich, Ozuna, Realmuto and Co. Go ahead and think we have nothing again. You’ll see again. Mark my words.
MetsFan22
Your not thinking if you think our window is closing. Are good players are young and under contract for a while. And Degrom won’t slow down anytime soon. Next year we will also have more money off the books. Unlike you. Are young players are actually proven.
No SS in your farm will be as good as Rosario
No 1b in your farm will be as good as Alonso
No 3b in your farm will be as good as mcniel
No LF in your farm will hit as good as Davis
And no pitcher will be as good as Degrom
dynamite drop in monty
Did you have to wear an extra seatbelt on the bus
MarlinsFanBase
LOL, so you clearly don’t know what we have.
OK, here goes just in response to what you posted.
SS – Jazz Chisholm is considered a better prospect, and he’s not the only one we have.
1B – This might be true, but Alonso needs to show he’s not just a one year wonder. Also, Lewin Diaz is a strong power hitting prospect of ours.
3B – FYI, we have Bryan Anderson. Better overall offensive threat and far better glove. All McNeil has right now is batting average over him. Anderson is the best 3B in the NL East right now. Big LOL on you showing that you don’t even know who he is.
LF – I didn’t realize that Davis is a juggernaut player. Uh, yeah, we’ve got multiple OFs in our system that have higher upside.
As for deGrom, while neither one of use can know that, and the odds are far because deGrom is top notch, but deGrom is heading into his age-32 season. He’s not a factor in this because the window is closing on him. Do you know if he’s gonna be good this year at age 32, or next year at age 33, or the year after that at age 34? We have many arms in our system – not just the kids that are up now.
Like I said, keep thinking we’ve got nothing. You are going to see in the next couple of years. Mark my words. Some of you Mets fans never learn.
MetsFan22
Ik what you have…
jazz is not a better prospect than Rosario was and he’ll never be better when it’s all said mad done.
LOL at comparing Diaz to Alonso
Did you just say Anderson is a better offensive threat than McNeil??? Yet again I don’t expect One of the 100 marlins fan to know much
about baseball. And when did I say I don’t who he is.. and McNeil doesn’t only have avg. he had a higher obp and slg and wrc+ and ops+. Didn’t even need to look it up…
No OF in your farm will be a better hitter than Davis. He put a a damn near 800 ops. Meanwhile you have Monte who is about to be 24 and has lower ops in the minors than Davis.
And Degrom wasn’t always a pitcher so he has less arm wear and tear.. I thought you would know this.. he will finish off his contract and be good every year.
Oh and btw all the players I names we have for many more years
I didn’t even name
Thor
Stroman
Diaz
Gimenez
Mauricio
Alvarez
Allen
Wolf
Valdez
Ramirez
Conforto
Nimmo
Smith
Who are young and expected to contribute a little more.
I promise on everything that in the best 10 years Mets will have more wins, playoffs appearances, and more good players
MetsFan22
Damn near 900* ops
MarlinsFanBase
Okay, I’m gonna save this too.
Good luck.
This is gonna be fun.
MetsFan22
Wait I really want to know tho. Do you actually believe anderson is better than McNeil???
Cam
Watching a Marlins fan and Mets fan bicker is a bit like watching two drunk guys fight over the last gas station sandwich. The prize is worthless, and you know both of them are underachievers at the best of times.
MetsFan22
Mets won’t be underachieving. Your just following a false narrative. Team is stacked with talent
MetsFan22
And how could marlins underachieve. They are use to garbage performances.
Hammmbone
I think both teams will be chasing the Braves and the Nationals for a hot minute. Mets always have pitching, but pitching gets old and ineffective. The Marlins have HAD great players in the past, but the get rid of them for, well nothing. Stanton, Ozuna, Yelich and Realmuto were there, now there gone, but left there name to carry on.

I know your being sarcastic, but they do seem to be more aggressive than you would expect from a team that finished 24 games out of second-to-last in their division and who are they going to catch? Mets? Phillies?
MarlinsFanBase
The fact that the Phillies and Mets are the two teams that people can see imploding says a lot about the Marlins chances of leaving the basement this year.
As a Marlins fan, I realistically expect them to finish in last again this year, but I’m not 100% sold on it because the rebuild is reversing and they’re plugging up holes on the roster. Then there are the two teams that can easily implode.
With these factors, I would not be surprised by a fourth place finish, and wouldn’t exactly be shocked if two teams implode while the Marlins improve to lead to a third place finish this year. The next couple of years will be very interesting with a lot of the fruit coming from the farm.
MetsFan22
Even if Nats Braves Mets or Phillies implode it won’t matter. The team that implodes will finish 10 games better than the marlins…

Strop! Hammer time.

I felt like I had Strop throat I laughed so hard.
flippinbats79
I was hoping he would go to Tampa. Stropicana Field babay!
jonnyzuck
so you’re saying he’s going to Texas
findingnimmo
Montero…I always felt the Mets should have converted him to strictly bullpen and just let him go all out for an inning at a time. I don’t know why they were hellbent on him being a starter.

Who cares? Marlins are irrelevant.

Yeah Jeter sucks as much at running a team as he did at SS
OofAndYikes
Absolutely no reason why he shouldn’t go to Texas if the Marlins aren’t going to overpay
stretch123
I think Marlins gonna give him a second year if needed. Which would definitely sway him to signing with them. As well as the chance to close.
bigbadjohnny
Strop is a great 12th inning Pitcher !
Ully
I had to look up Buttress and found that term being used in a baseball forum online to be rock solid.
pbjls
Would like to see Texas get this done and offer a minors deal to Cashner. the vastly improved rotation has already improved their pen by removing a lot of innings pressure. Adding strop and cashner would allow for some young guys to get more development work in aaa. add castellanos and this team will compete for a playoff spot first year in new park
pkazaka05
Whoever does get him be prepared for one of the most inconsistent relievers you will ever lay your eyes on. The guy can be lights out or so erratic and walk in 5 runs there is no middle ground which is usually the case but definitely with him. I will say he will not be missed in chicago and may god have mercy on his soul
@budselig6969
He should Strop and think about playing there
sean millerick
It really shouldn’t be a big mystery that attempts are being made to fix the pen, even if the Marlins won’t be contending in 2020. It’s not as if they traded for Hader and signed him to a $100 million contract. They have a young, promising starting rotation that probably just wants to believe their bullpen can preserve some wins for them. Offseason has been all about putting them in a better position to gain confidence. That’s why Chen and Conley were dumped.
MetsFan22
Why would anyone want to play for the marlins??? It’s a clown show
OofAndYikes
Because it’s still a job that makes, at worst, hundreds of thousands of dollars? Why would anyone want to play for the Mets? The only thing they’ve done in the last 35 years is being a punching bag for the AL in world series.
MarlinsFanBase
It’s always funny to see Mets fans talk like they root for a model franchise. They historically, when looking at championships and the number of years to get them, third best in the NL East behind the Braves’ 3 and those same Marlins at 2 achieved in far far far far less years (3 decades less). They have the longest championship drought in the NL East. In championships won by expansion teams, they are 4th behind the Marlins, Blue Jays and Royals because, while they all are tied with two, the Mets have done it in many more years of existence than the other 3. Since the MLB Draft was implemented, the Mets have more highly hyped up prospect busts than any other MLB team. They can fill a roster with the number of prospect busts they’ve had. And let’s not even get into the leadership incompetence that has been present for nearly two decades now in the front office from Steve Phillips on to every GM since.
Whew, I can write an encyclopedia collection of the Mets failure as a franchise.

Brewers “fans” groaned when they saw he was linked to Milwaukee, because “he stinks.”
They’ll whine really loud if he signs elsewhere, claiming Stearns got outsmarted, the owner is cheap amd strop would have been a dominant setup man for us.
jdan74
Cubs fan here. He is absolutely atrocious, now. Not sure why there’s even a bidding war. He’s in the twilight of his career and blows the game almost every time.

Strop? Thought JD was rebuilding or was that just a lie, Lot of minor league pitchers cheaper and probably as good,
