It seems that the situation of free agent outfielder Marcell Ozuna is beginning to achieve some clarity. The Reds, Cardinals, and Rangers are not only still interested but “appear to be the frontrunners” for his services, per MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand (via Twitter).
While some market segments have already been deprived of their top options, the best right-handed-hitting corner outfielders remain available. Indeed, the group only expanded at the non-tender deadline, when Domingo Santana and Steven Souza were added to a slate that already included Yasiel Puig, Nicholas Castellanos, and Marcell Ozuna. Somewhat older veterans Cameron Maybin and Hunter Pence are also available for teams interested in righty bats.
The Brewers have inked Avisail Garcia to a $20MM contract, which set down a fairly strong market marker. But the demand situation isn’t quite as strong as might’ve been hoped for by this group. It has remained difficult to ascertain whether there’ll be a major bidding push, even for a group that features youth and established hitting ability.
The trio that Feinsand names on Ozuna has been tied to him previously, so in that sense it’s no surprise. But it’s interesting to see those teams involved at this stage. The Cards have laid low this winter but have said all along they won’t rule out a move to retain Ozuna. The Rangers have funds available to bolster their outfield unit and add some pop to the lineup after missing on Anthony Rendon.
Most interesting of all is the Reds. The Cincinnati organization reportedly agreed to terms with left-handed-hitting center fielder Shogo Akiyama recently, though that’s not yet official. If that contract goes through, it’d give them a ton of options in finishing off their roster. Adding Akiyama already sets the stage for at least a few minor moves for the Reds. Going on to pick up Ozuna or another corner piece would have even more significant implications for the remainder of the team’s winter — and the rest of the market.

A 4-man OF of Akiyama, Ozuna, Senzel, and Winker would turn some heads

Lol. No Aquino ? Smh

Aquino should be counted on as a 4th or 5th OF at best. He’s a 30 year old rookie who had 3 good weeks. He might be something but I wouldn’t hang my hat on him.

Aquino was second in the entire reds org in Hr last season. He hit 28 in the Minors and 19 for the reds in two months. He will be your right fielder. I have a prediction. Reds will sign two more before Spring Training. One via FA and one via trade.
You can still go to Arizona to see Senzel and Winker because the Indians and Reds share the Goodyear facility.
bigredsfan41017
Wrong according to his profile stats he was born 4/22/94 he is 25 now
Dbird777
If he is our starting RF, I can see a big crater in the 5 hole. Sadly, much like Votto was in the 2 hole much of last year. Which would be unacceptable with the win-now moves we’ve made. We’ve got to get Ozuna or Castellanos. And Nick C is the known RF
stratcrowder
I can’t understand why Ervin isn’t getting a legit shot. The guy stick and play some d at all three OF spots.
dhud
Aquino is just as likely to hit .200 as he is to hit 15 HRs in a month again
He’s an older prospect who has had the same scouting report for years in the minors. Big power; big swing and miss. He is what he is. The 4 listed are objectively better options
jim stem
Big power, big holes…like pretty much every other major league hitter today. It’s what’s being taught, accepted and rewarded. Any hitter that provides .250/30/85 with 175 strikeouts is going to be a rich man in today’s game. Look no further than one Mr. Harper.
AssumeFactsNotInEvidence
Except Bryce Harpers Lifetime OBP is .385. You’ll catch up to the game, one day.
captainchaos55
Sometimes late bloomers figure it out
SaberSmuckers
How do you leave off OBP? It’s 2020.
Also how are RBI’s a good measure of how good someone is?
So many things off about your statement.
jim stem
I welcome a reasonable debate. Ozuna has had ONE really good season. Go back and look at that team. Dee Gordan and Yelich all had great seasons in front of him and Stanton hit 59 homeruns. The team also included Realmuto. What has he done without them?
In regard to obp, how has that helped the Reds with Votto and how often has Harper played in the post season?
People can bury their noses in stat binders all they want, but the bottom line is winning. I personally look at how a player produces runs in clutch situations rather than how often they drive themselves in with homers in nonessential outcomes. Sure, Harper is dynamic. But he is easily pitched to and beaten late in games when it matters.
My statement is geared more towards the game’s philosophy (launch angles, fly balls, swing for the fences with two strikes, refusing to beat shifts, not hitting behind runners, etc) and the blind spot toward fundamentals and the only stat that matters – wins.
Bdonnell
Aquino was non-tendered 13 months ago and resigned with the Reds after no one picked him up. His run last year was awesome, but he’s basically an OF version of Dietrich last season. Aquino can’t be relied upon over 162, but maybe he catches fire over a month span. If someone wants him in another trade package, I’ll pack his bags for him.

ncaachampillini
Yeah hello you know on a 4 man umpiring squad the Crew Chief is also referred to as the Head Umpire? Not that complicated.
And of course I know with the darn shifts that there is quite often a 4th outfielder. I was just giving DHud a hard time as I think the way he wrote his initial comment was funny.
dynamite drop in monty
Do you?
captainchaos55
Uh…. besides the pitcher and the catcher I think you can put 7 outfielders if you want
theoldviolin
True, I’ve been an umpire for 30 years. The rule states that the pitcher must be in contact with the rubber, the catcher must be in the catcher’s box, and all other fielder’s must be in fair territory when the pitch is delivered. That is why when they used to intentionally walk batters, the catcher would have to stand in the catcher’s box until the ball left the pitcher’s hand.
its_happening
The back catcher thinks head umpire sounds weird.
jim stem
Actually, you can, just pull an infielder. It’s only a matter of time until some manager gets real creative: slow batter, pulls everything, fly ball or two hopper to his pull side. Honestly, if he’s left handed, why bother with any infielders on the left side? Pitch to his pull, play you 2b back, your ss deep to the pull side and drop your 3b back into left field. Rotate all your outfielders to the pull side and you basically have SIX outfielders. lol.
Honestly though, with a guy like Kingery, Marwin Gonzalez, Ketel Marte, JD Davis, etc….why not get into the head of the hitter? They have already shown that they aren’t willing to change their philosophy and singles (bunt) are useless in this game.
Netflix&RichHill
Dude, what? That is a WEIRD group of players to choose. The way you wrote that reads like you’re saying those guys are unwilling to change.
Marte and Kingery pull the ball more than league average, but Davis and Gonzalez come in below. The only one who could be considered GB heavy by a good margin is Davis.
Marte came into the league a slap hitting, GB oriented hitter with a GB rate over 50%. Last year he slugged over .500 and had a GB rate barely above league average.
Marwin was a 2 to 1 GB to FB guy, now he’s under 1.5 to 1.
Davis only has 634 major league plate appearances, but he’s also trending in their direction.
Kingery’s batted ball profile remains pretty much the same in his first 2 seasons, he just pulled the ball more in his sophomore effort.
Granted, these guys are not justin Turner type changers, but maybe you meant players NOT like these guys?
jim stem
I referring to positioning those guys on DEFENSE. They are all versatile enough to move them around when they have the big leather glove on their hand when FACING a pull hitter. (Sigh)
martyfan
I think at least one, if not both, Senzel and Winker will be moving on in a trade if Ozuna signs with the Reds.
Many have said that Cleveland would want Senzel in any package for Lindor and they inquired at some point before the Puig trade about Winker.
kodion
Would that make Senzel second center?

They should be in on a corner outfielder. They have enough young cheap talent to offset a free agent signing, not saying that Ozuna is the answer though. That division is so tough though, they are many more pieces away from being a playoff team.
jdgoat
They need a true center fielder
SalaryCapMyth
There are very, very few CF’s with decent bats. It’s the shallowest position in baseball right now. Even more so than Catcher. Unless you are talking about a league average or worse CF I don’t think there is one to be had unless you are going to trade for one and you will pay BIG for 32 year old Starling Marte. Another option is Jacky Bradly from the Red Sox. Can’t imagine that sounds to appealing.
pflizzle
I know everyone is tired of the Lindor trade talks but.. if the Reds were to sign Ozuna, would a package of Senzel, Winker, and two top prospects get Lindor?
That would give the Reds an infield of Votto, Moose, Lindor, Suarez and an outfield of Aquino/Ervin, Ozuna, Akiyama.

Doubtful that bot Senzel andWinker would both go, but most likely one or the other.

Reds need to leave Ozuna alone. He’s not an upgrade from what I’ve seen.
How about send Winker and Disco to the Red Sox for Price and Benintendi? Add cash/minor leaguers as needed to appease both sides.
Price and Disco should produce comparable numbers (assuming Price doesn’t completely “fall off a cliff”). And while that is not a significant OF improvement for the Reds, Cincy loves it’s hometown players so it would help team interest and ticket sales. Meanwhile Boston gets under the salary cap and really doesn’t hurt itself for ‘20 season.

As noted in the original post. It’s not crazy at all – Boston wants to dump Price’s bad contract to get their payroll out of the luxury tax territory. This was the exact subject of several rumors in mid-December.

I’ll add it’s the same situation where the Angeles gave SF a top prospect to take Cozart’s contract. It’s the new way of the world in MLB. Trades are based as much or more on salary/years’ control as it is on ability.

MOOKIE BETTS
Go for it. Get Lindor too.
conniemacksghost
If the reds ink him, are they legit contenders? I think they have a great lineup as is, maybe a stronger bullpen & I think they will win the central.
Flight815
I believe they are about an 85 win team currently. With the addition of Ozuna and possibly upgrade at SS, they would definitely be the favorite to win the Central. Their bullpen is fine atm with Lorenzen, Garrett and Iglesias at the back end. If they are in contention at the deadline, bullpen would most likely be a priority for them.
bjupton100
Reds might as well go all in this off-season and trade a few pieces at the deadline. Get Lindor, Ozuna, and and Castelanos. Trade everyone off at the deadline if they’re not tearing up the league. Marlins did a similar thing a few years back.
angt222
At this point, it feels like Ozuna will sign a 1yr contract for close to the qualifying offer rate to return to STL.
seth3120
I wish. Too much interest for that to happen
stan lee the manly
It’s surprising he’s still available, and I agree. The longer he sits on the market, the more likely it seems that he will be back in St. Louis for another year or two

He’s been hurt a lot lately, getting older, funky swing, struggles to play defense… I’m sure Gm’s see all that too and probably are asking, “How much of his success was directly related to having Yelich and Stanton flanking him?”

“At this point”.. ? It’s Jan 2… Hell get minimum 3/50 MM by ST, even with little interest…

I really wonder what kind of contract Ozuna will end up getting ? 2-3 years seems too good to be true . I’m assuming he will life someone into a 4th year.
I hope the Cards are smart about it – if they sign him, Ozuna And Fowler will be our OF’ers for at least the next two seasons . What do you do with all that young OF talent ?
Wish they would finally tell Fowler that he’s the 4th OF’er until proven otherwise
uncle mike
I hope “angt222” is correct about Ozuna! I would much rather see Ozuna return as the #4 hitter for the Cardinals rather as the St. Louis Post Dispatch writer suggested the Owners we’re leaning on putting Carpenter at Clean-up. Hitting behind Goldschmidt. Lordy…Carpenter hitting Clean-up???? Wouldn’t that strike FEAR IN THE HEARSTS of opposing teams!?!?! Wow!!! Carpenter’s batting average in ‘19 was less than he weighed!!! Ha!

Ozuna to the Reds makes a lot of sense, after they trade for Lindor. They have a logjam of outfielders out there and they need to get rid of a couple of them. I think this would be a good trade offer.

Indians: OF Nick Senzel
IF Freddy Galvis
RHP Troy Santillan
OF Jose Siri
OF Travis Jankowski/OF Nick Martini
Top 15-30 Prospect
Another mid-tier prospect not in Top 30
You could add someone like a Schebler in this type deal as well, but I think the Reds could get another pitcher in a deal for him.
hockeyjohn
The Indians have no need for Jankowski or Martini or more 4th 5th outfield types. Cleveland already has 9 outfielders on their 40 man roster. You have to remember that both teams’ needs have to be met in a trade. I don’t see a trade happening that does not include at least one of Lodolo, Greene, or India along with Senzel and other pieces.
Caleb Clark
The Reds are not trading Lodolo and/or Greene.
Ab95
Would love this from the Reds’ side, but no way Cleveland does that. Too much unproven talent and too many prospects as opposed to proven major league contributors. They’d want fewer pieces at higher quality rather than a bunch of lower quality pieces plus Senzel.
Les Chesterfield
wanting and getting are two different things. SD and Dodgers have WAY more to offer than Senzel, but that’s about as good as they are likely ever going to get for Lindor or they would have already traded him by now. They can have India or Santillian as 2nd piece and whoever to fill in the blank. Hopefully it’s Galvis and then Reds can take his money and sign Will Harris
hockeyjohn
The Indians will get what they want for Lindor or they will roll with him as their shortstop for 2020. Teams will have to pay Cleveland’s price to get him.
stymeedone
It does NOT matter who has more to offer. It matters who is willing to make the offer. The Dodgers don’t tend to trade talent away. Just because they have the most, hasn’t meant they are more likely to trade it. The team willing to make the best offer will end up making the trade regardless of what other teams COULD HAVE offered.
Les Chesterfield
Senzel + is a great grab and most indians will get. Dodgers or Padres aren’t going to part with top talent

I agree the reds look like theyve improved but to say they are already better than the cardinals is a stretch. The cards had alot of players have down years and still won the central. I dont think ozuna will make or break the cards. His ops wasnt that great and his defense is terrible. I bet an outfield of Carlson ,arozarena and maybe Bader or justin Williams or someone else will outhit and outfield last years outfield of ozuna, Fowler and bader. I expect fowler to have alittle better year,if he plays, as well as carp and goldy. Also cards have a ton of prospects to try and make a trade themselves. Have the reds improved, sure, but are they assured to win the central, don’t think so.
Nuggethoarder
Why do you expect Fowler to be better than last year? A slightly above average hitter (103 wRC+ last year, 107 on his career) and a below average fielder is basically what Dexter Fowler has been his entire career. Except now he is 33, so while it is possible that he will play better you should expect him to play about the same, or somewhat worse…
SimbaHOF2019
Fowler still gets on base. Thats about all he brings. Little power, BAD defense. poor concentration on the bases and rarely hustles down the line. NEVER dives for a ball. and I mean NEVER!
Payne Train
I wouldn’t assume that he will be starting.
Payne Train
No one is jumping on the Reds bandwagon – they will still finish 4th in the Central and they still won’t fill half their stadium on home games. Then they will trade everything at the deadline because they pieced together an average team – which compared to their previous however many years of awful teams, looks like a playoff contender .
This is easier described by if your forced to eat dog food, then things like SPAM or Vienna sausages start looking appetizing.
Now people may jump on the White Sox bandwagon. I wouldn’t blame them.

Who are these overachievers you speak of? Was it Carpenter having the worst year of his big league career? Was it Mikolas regressing a lot from his first year as a Cardinal? The only guys you’d have a case for “overachieving” are Gallegos and Hudson.
