The Giants have named former major league outfielder Pat Burrell as the hitting coach for their High-A affiliate in San Jose, the organization announced.
This is the latest in a growing line of roles with the Giants for the 43-year-old Burrell. He wrapped up his long playing career with the team from 2010-11, helping the Giants to a World Series title in the first of those seasons. Burrell eventually became a scout for the Giants, and “a well-regarded” one at that, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area notes.
Before he finished his career as a member of the Giants, Burrell – the No. 1 pick in the 1998 draft – spent time with the Phillies and Rays. Although he struggled in Tampa Bay, where he played parts of two seasons, Burrell was a threat at the plate for the majority of his career. Pat the Bat will now pass on his hitting expertise to some of the young talent in the San Francisco organization.
Man, slow day.
Nice. Very underrated Giant from that 2010 team.
Bay Area homegrown too.
Crazy that Burrell never made an All-Star team. He had a couple of really nice years.
yeah bs
He went to my high school for a year before transferring to the private school, and his mom was the receptionist in my office in jr high. He signed his draft deal the spring I was in 8th grade, and she retired before the next year early lol.
When I was in high school Pat, who knew my coach that was a year or two older and played in the minors, came by and hit BP on our varsity field he was launching balls over the warehouse for field equipment that was 10 feet beyond the wall!
Good luck with the future coaching career for a boy from the San Lorenzo Valley. Bay Area native coming back again to a local franchise.
Am a red/blue striped phillies fan from birth. Burrell was the phillies version of Lindros, when you peel back the hype….a great dude and player…
pat burrell once broke a mirror high-fiving himself
He banged my wife and later that night he banged my sister too.
Your user name says it all
Pat Burrell’s his father?
Who cares
Please tell us about your accomplishments in MLB?
He got arrested for lewd behavior at Great American Ballpark.
I never watched Phillies games but how bad was his defense? Looking at his stats I’m surprised how little WAR he put up. Plenty of seasons around 900 OPS
Well, WAR is the most useless stat. He was never great but was a very good player. We don’t need nerds to tell us that.
Nobody kept him around for his defense. Dude could rake…
that is why they call him pat the bat, (and it sounds better than pat the glove)
i actually remember him being a poor hitter … kind of just like a slugger … homer or strike out type guy not exactly sure you want him teaching youngsters.
He’s the perfect guy then. That’s what 90% of the league is.
His plate discipline was very good.
Even as a Mets fan, I really appreciated watching Pat the Bat play, despite him being one of the most prolific Mets killers to ever play the game. He really was a tremendous hitter and very underrated throughout his career.
Well, when he and Aubrey Huff were in the outfield together on the Giants, they were referred to as the “Water Buffalo defense”, if that is any indication.
PAT THE BATTTTT!
I’m glad someone else posted this, if it would have taken 4 hours for me to come in and do it, that would have been sad. PAT THE BAT!!!
Biggest offseason move for Farhan.
Pat the best
The Machine!
Pat has seen more balls than Jim Mcgreevey.
