The Cubs have acquired right-hander Casey Sadler from the Dodgers, per team announcements. Minor league infielder Clayton Daniel is headed back to L.A. Sadler lost his spot on the Dodgers’ 40-man when the club signed Alex Wood. The Cubs’ 40-man roster now sits at 39.
Sadler, 29, pitched to a stellar 2.14 ERA in 46.1 innings between the Rays and Dodgers in 2019. As might be expected, his peripherals hardly supported that level of run prevention. A below-average 9.1% swinging strike rate and 16% strikeout rate contributed to a 4.38 FIP. To Sadler’s credit, he did limit walks and features elite spin on his fastball and curveball. Perhaps he’ll be able to overcome some likely regression in his BABIP allowed and strand rate if he can better actualize his raw stuff in Chicago. Sadler’s out of options, so he’ll have to stick on the Cubs’ active roster or else again be traded or exposed to waivers.
Daniel, 24, has reached Double-A, albeit briefly. In 501 professional plate appearances, mostly in the low minors, the Jacksonville State product has compiled a .290/.367/.379 line with nearly as many walks (52) as strikeouts (53). The former 31st-rounder has logged starts at second, short, and third base, with much of that work coming in the middle infield.
whyhayzee
Yes!
David Herrick
This Bryant grievance is taking FOR EVER. Just decide the outcome and let the Cubs get on with their off-season!!
Compo
Even after it’s settled I don’t think any major deals are happening. Gonna try one more time with the same core players.
mr. g
Sounds crazy, but probably true.
22Leo
Yeah I assume if the Cubs were going to move him this offseason it would have been done a little while ago.
mr. g
@22, they can’t move him until his grievance is settled. If they are going to at all.
22Leo
Ah, I haven’t been aware of when it was filed. Just been been reading and hearing about the Cubs potentially moving him for a while now.
socalbum
can’t vs won’t — nothing that prevents them from trading him before the arbitration decision.
billlj
Agree 100%
Anthony Princeton
According to local Chicago media around the Cubs like David Kaplan, the Cubs still have to cut payroll. So I still think something will be done.
iml12
Looking at the various payroll websites it appears to be a couple million dollars. I don’t think they have to do anything major to get under the luxury tax but they probably can’t make any improvements at the deadline or sign anyone. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are rolling out what they have right now.
bigjonliljon
Agreed. But that also doesn’t consider room for deadline trade moves. So now or then… any deal done in season would require financial room.
greenguy
Did their off season even start? I’m curious what Bryant return will be so yes let the arbiter rule so we can get the ball rolling! They need more than this trade so hurry up cubby’s
Les Chesterfield
A 1/2 major deal is on the horizon. Trading away Bryant is major; the return will not be
cubfanforever
Maybe the person deciding on the grievance issue is a Cardinals or Brewers fan and is trying to stick it to the Cubs. I mean, c’mon already.
We all know how it ends.
22Leo
Now please trade him back to the Dodgers for Joe Kelly. The Dodgers can cover the difference in money owed. Come on…I said “please…”
bully6789
If you think it will only take joe kelly to get Bryant o have to question your baseball knowledge
22Leo
How did you get anything about Bryant from my post? Reading comprehension is a good thing… “trade him back…” hmm…must mean Bryant! The article is about the Cubs acquiring Sadler from the Dodgers. Also, my post was clearly a joke, anyway.
amk3510
Yeah lets trade the guy who throws 99 with tail for the guy whos fastball can’t break glass
socalbum
Sadler isn’t great, maybe not even good – but his 4 seam fastball clocked at 95 mph; 2 seamer 93.6. I think that will break most glass
mr. g
Not bad. The Cubs have been hibernating all winter but they are slowly coming out to play. I thought they were preaching heat, and strikeouts earlier, but this guys pretty solid otherwise it seems.
108Years
Dumpster divin again
SabrinasDaddy
Absolutely not! Sadler was impressive but the LA FO cares about “options” in order to maneuver players and Sadler was out of options which handcuffs the organization regarding moves. Cubs gained a valuable arm…
mr. g
Finally! Only 5 more bullpen spots to fill.
bigjonliljon
No I think maybe 3. Lmao
yaow 2
Dumpster Divin for comments as well.
Josip Tomic
Hello Anthony,
Is it belwo or below average? If it’s below average, can you fix it? please and thank you!
mike127
Hello Josip,
Is it “please and thank you!” or “Please and thank you!”? If it’s “Please and thank you,” can you fix it? Most sentences in the English language begin with a capitalized letter.
22Leo
Wow, that was petty.
SalaryCapMyth
Do you mean both are petty? Don’t know why you would think one is but not the other. I think you can take a hike, personally. It’s already stupid enough that people feel like they should correct everyone’s spelling but to do it and then make a writing error yourself is the cherry ontop of the little punk ice cream sunday.
Josip Tomic
Enjoy what you got SalaryCapMyth. Don’t complain!
22Leo
Would you like a tissue, SalaryCapMyth?
Josip Tomic
Thank you, 22Leo.
Josip Tomic
Thank you, 22Leo. You’re the best.
retire21
Sundae lol. Sorry, couldn’t resist.
cwizzy6
Its Friday. Grab a beer and chill out.
Anthony Franco
Fixed. Thanks for the heads up.
Josip Tomic
No problem!
paindonthurt
31 K’s in 46 innings. I know nothing of this guy but looks like another soft tosser.
ChiSoxCity
So much for Theo’s press conference speak about change. These offseason dumpster signings indicate anything but change. More like the status quo. History tells us none of these acquisitions impact the team, and all of them will be in another uniform next season.
DarkSide830
well at least the Sox have Tatis…oh wait
ChiSox_Fan
And Eloy and Cease and Moncada and Kopech and… on and on
DarkSide830
you miss the point. your comment is an unreasonable rant, so I responded with sonething unrelated. okay, now that you’ve read this, you may go back to your regularly scheduled trolling.
simschifan
Dude get bent and worry about your own crap team going on year 15 of a rebuild. Twins just solidified the al central maybe worry about that. Or go buy season tickets to that hell hole us cellular rate field

Compo
Don’t understand why Theo gets all the trash talk when it’s the Rickets who won’t let him spend. Yeah he’s made some stupid moves the last couple years, but I think the Cubs biggest problem right now is ownership.
DarkSide830
to be fair, he dug this hole. money spent on Heyward, Darvish, Descalso and others could all be well spent elsewhere. they let him spend in past offseasons and he blew it. would you, as an owner, let a guy who signed those contracts have free reign to sign more?
ICanSeeTheFuture
Facts. I don’t think he’s crying poor, but spending every year with middling results compared to dollars spent would probably turn me off from doing it annually hoping for a different result. Work with what you have. Meaning he’s going to have to be stingy, and creative.
Compo
Very true but missing out on guys like Claudio(who signed for less than 2m)? Can’t help but wonder if that was a miss on Theo’s part or a spending issue. I get not wanting to bring any big money deals in this off season, but there’s still plenty they could’ve done for relatively cheap.
DarkSide830
id buy that Theo and ownership had a strategy for this offseason and it all got blown out of the water after they saw the money guys were getting. its incredible how much and how quickly cash has flown this offseason.
theo2016
Darvish contract is totally fine. 4/81 left and He was one of the better pitchers in baseball the second half and I fully expect a 4 war season barring injury. Lester is getting 20 mil as basically a 5th starter now but they signed him knowing the end of the contract wouldn’t be great value wise. Heyward is a bad contract for sure, too many groundballs and iffb. They need quintana to pitch like he did for the White Sox . This is still an excellent team that really just lacks a bullpen. A bounce back from kimbrel would be huge.
iml12
Descalso is on a short term contract making a couple million bucks, he isn’t the problem. Most teams would probably just cut him after last year. The Darvish contract seems like decent value right now. Heyward is the black hole and chatwood hasn’t earned a fraction of his money but outside of that he’s done fine. The core is getting into serious arbitration dollars and it’s only going to get worse. They need to makes some tough decisions, period.
ChiSoxCity
Chattwood has done fine? Are you serious? He was supposed to be in the starting rotation of a contending team. They have to play mind games with this guy to get him on the mound. Not only that, he can’t throw a strike if you put a gun to his head. Whatever Epstein saw in this guy, it was a gross overestimation.
iml12
Reading comprehension. I said he hasn’t earned a fraction of his contract. What a bad troll
bigjonliljon
I’m not so sure it comes from Rickets. They’ve spent money before. A lot. And they’ve invested millions in Wrigley and surrounding area. I think this is on Theo wanting to build a longer contending window. I think it’s Theo wanting to stay under cap in order to build for the future. Not sure if he’s right or not. Time will tell
Rangers29
I hope commentors don’t call this dumpster diving, this is a good move for a ground ball pitcher. He is efficient, and he gets outs. Good move.
22Leo
Too late. In their defense, though, some of the Cubs fans posting here do not seem to be very bright., so it is tough to blame them for ignorant posts. Not all, but a few.
chicagofan1978
The dumpster divin crap is from the Sox fan guy with multiple accounts.
22Leo
I was referring to other responses as well.
chicagofan1978
Though I agree about the Cub fan statement lol
baseball1010
Daniel has never been a Dodger, what do you mean he’s headed back to L.A. ?
22Leo
I assume he is referring to what the Dodgers are receiving, or getting back, in the trade.
dray16
thing are finally taking shape
number1dodger
As long as I have been a dodger fan. And that is been a really long time. They have always traded good players. I sure hope Sadler does really well in Chicago. Last year they were trying to trade Peterson. And he turn out to be one of the best hitters on the team last year.
22Leo
Actually, the one thing I do credit Friedman with is holding on to most of their young talent. Hell, it wasn’t too long ago that the Nationals wanted Bellinger for Dozier, for example. It’s a good thing the Dodgers don’t “always” trade good players.
neurogame
It was the Twins, not Nationals, but I understand your sentiment.
Also, here’s a thought – The Dodgers could have traded for Jose Fernandez, but didn’t want to include their then pitching phenom, Julio Urias, whom the Marlins really wanted in the deal. Fernandez could potentially be alive today with the change of scenery. Can you imagine that rotation now? The top three would be Buehler, Fernandez and Kershaw. That would have been sweet.
Psychguy
Sorry to see him land with Cubs. He deserves better, Astros?
sportsfan38
Cubs action reminds me of Marlins after 2017, although they have not traded all their best players. Definitely are not wanting to spend $s to improve team, for 2nd straight year. This is a Ricketts problem, probably wanting to spend more $ in the political arena.
bigbadjohnny
Theo & Jed said they cannot afford all of “The Core”…….
Bryant
Rizzo
Baez
Contreras
Schwarber
so lets look over this……..
Bryant was given an offer, he refused…..and his heart is not to remain in Chicago……so He is Gone !
Rizzo……best years are behind him…..still have him for 2021………..you think Rizzo will be worth $250 million at age 32 ?….he will get part of Brant money.
Baez……..2020 is a make or break year for El Mago……is he really that good……or just good…….we need to see if his bat is around 300….and can he take that next step leap of major stardom………right now, he is the BEST Cubs trade chip that Theo has !……..his agent will demand over $280 million plus after 2022 season.
Contreras………there are several young Catchers in Cubs system ready to take over by 2021…..Amaya is one of them……..Contreras will be a free agent after 2023……still have time to improve his trade value……….keep him around with Baez for now.
Schwarber……..Mr Babe Ruth……..Gorman Thomas hit long HRs….so did Dave Kingman………Schwarber has to hit above 280 to stay with the Cubs…….2020 is also a big year for him……he will be around $165 million after 2022 season…….he could hit 50 plus HR’s if he played all the time………again, he might be trade bait in July.
solaris602
I’m guessing that Epstein is just patiently waiting for the official decision in the grievance before seriously engaging in Bryant trade talks. Now that the 3B FA market has completely shaken out, you have just Bryant and Arenado for contenders seeking an upgrade, and only the very deepest pockets can even afford to window shop the latter. Braves can pay in multiple high end pitching prospects because God knows the Cubs have nothing on the horizon in the minors.
Munkes2
Guess youve never heard of Brailyn Marquez… Why are cubs fans so uninformed about stuff.. Kid is 20 yrs old and throws 100+ mph , one of the top pitching prospects out there
bigbadjohnny
Cubs bullpen will be strong in 2020.
DarkSide830
not as strong as 2019 after losing Kintzler and Cishek.
megaj
Cishek fell apart at times last year and blew several games. Kintzler was fairly solid though.
iml12
Chisek had a really bad stretch but his numbers looked solid. I cringed anytime they brought him into the game the second half.
SupremeZeus
The Cubs are relying on quite a bit of hope and projection in their bullpen as currently constructed. As is, I see a very volatile bullpen for the Cubs. A LOT will have to break their way for it to be a top bullpen.
The Human Toilet
As a Cubs fan, we will take a middle of the road bullpen right now. Really need Kimbrel to bounce back, to at least being effective as his elite days are probaly behind him but still can be a strong closer.
ChiSoxCity
Not happening. Kimbrel is toast. Everyone in baseball knows it except Theo.
bigbadjohnny
I heard the Cubs Convention is not sold out……but the White Sox convention is !
22Leo
Isn’t one of those being held in some fan’s basement, though?
bigbadjohnny
STOP teasing those White Sox fans…….
but yes, it is true……..they are offering FREE spray cheese on crackers to lure in fans.
22Leo
I’ll pretend to be a Sox fan for free Easy Cheese on Ritz.
Cubguy13
You also have to be missing most your teeth and be addicted to crack.. Still want to be a Sox fan for free spray cheese?
22Leo
Is it bacon cheddar?
ChiSoxCity
Or you’d have to be some drunk loser pissing on people’s lawns and sending racist tweets to black cvbs players.
Greg M
All the Cub’s can do is sell out every single home game every year and generally have an advantage when they are on the road. Other team’s have to resort to selling ticket’s only in state to prevent Cub’s fans outnumbering the home team fans.
Yeah, I wouldn’t be boasting about attendance number’s if I were a White Sox fan.
ChiSoxCity
Every conversation with a cvbs fans always starts and ends with, “yeah we svck, but we buy tickets”. Nobody cares. #MeToo #WrigleyOuthouse
Backatitagain
The Dodgers do not really need any improvements; however, if they think about the future and the Luxury tax then consider sending Max Muncy and Joc Peterson to the Braves for Drew Waters and Sean Newcomb. Waters is a cc: Brett Butler, and Newcomb is ready to start in the MLB, throwing a shutout at the Dodgers in his debut. Braves can play Muncy at third base to fix their failure to keep Donaldson and Joc can hold down left field with Markakis and Duvall as backups. Giterdone
22Leo
The Dodgers can’t trade Muncy after producing so many T-shirts mocking Bumgarner (great shirts, by the way). That’s simple mathematactics. Or is it methamatactics?
amk3510
Stop, the Dodgers are not trading Muncy.
empirejim
LOL…. Sure, trade two established big-leaguers for a couple question marks? Im sure Friedman cant wait to get that call from the Braves……
bigbadjohnny
Cubs next center fielder……..Jacoby Ellsbury…………it could happen !
chitowninwi
Ur an idiot

Poor Sadler has to swap his sandals for snow shoes.
bigbadjohnny

marcowaller84
Nice snag
megaj
Contreras doesn’t have a grievance, there is no reason Epstein couldn’t have made some moves to get some starting pitching depth. Cubs have catching depth with Caratini, Davis, andAmaya on the way in 2021. Quintana doesn’t have a grievance, could have shed that salary easy. I think Theo is just done in Chicago and already looking towards his next gig.
citizen
Now era doesn’t matter. Good grief.
fannclub6
It appears the Chubs are accumulating lots of utility infielders and no-name pitchers. Love it!
zrjc14
It’s all they can “afford”
laswagn
Watch this rookie turn into an all-star.
therula34
Watch ur fingers, that windows about shut!
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Is this a good pick up?
Munkes2
Not a bad pick up.. Cubs have been digging for those surprises for the BP this off season.. Not mad about getting Sadler, tepera, Winkler, and Pelham.. Along with bringing back Morrow.. Add to kimbrel, wick, Ryan, maples, mills, alzolay its not a bad pen… No Yankees pen but it could surprise, especially with a healthy morrow n kimbrel..
I still think Cubs are gonna trade Bryant, prolly to Phillies… Then sign Nic Castillinos , I believe that will be what Ricketts thinks will save face is bringing back Nic… So I predict a Phillies trade
Bryant/Hayward for Bohm/Segura
After cubs sign Nic …
I dont know why cubs dont send either
Contrearas to rays for Honeywell /Vidal Brujan
Or
Caratini for Honeywell
Beef up the pitching prosepects ,, Honeywell and Brailyn Marquez coming up in the next 2 year’s would be good behind Dervish n Hendricks
Brujan is a natural lead off hitter, speed demon, will man 2nd base with Javy at SS for years to come..
Bohm prolly ends up being Rizzos replacement at 1st in a few years
Segura takes over at 3rd for the rest of his 3 yrs contract , lead off hitter til Brujan comes up
Cubs 2020
Segura 3rd
Castillinos RF
Rizzo 1st
Javy SS
Schwarber LF
Caratini C
Horner 2nd
Happ CF
Pitching
Yu, Hendricks, Lester, Q, chatwood, mills
Beyond 2020
1st Rizzo/Bohm
2nd Brujan/strumpf
SS javy
3rd Segura/Bohm
LF schwarber/Davis
CF Horner/ Happ
RF Castillinos/ Roederer
C Caratini/ Amaya
Pitching
Darvish, Hendricks, Honeywell, Marquez, Alzolay, Jensen
