Most of the Blue Jays’ offseason focus has been on obtaining starting pitching, with Travis Shaw standing out as the most significant addition to the position player mix. However, Toronto has also looked into some major upgrades to the everyday lineup, as Sportsnet.ca’s Shi Davidi reports that the Jays had interest in Didi Gregorius before the free agent signed with Philadelphia. In terms of players still potentially available, the Jays have also “checked in” with the Indians about a trade for Francisco Lindor.
It might be fair to characterize the Jays’ interest in Lindor as perhaps due diligence at this point. As Davidi put it, “any sane front office” would naturally ask Cleveland about an All-Star player who has been the subject of trade rumors for months. It doesn’t appear as though a Lindor trade (with the Jays or anyone) is happening any time soon, as both Indians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti and manager Terry Francona have each recently indicated that Lindor isn’t being shopped. While things could still change on that front, of course, the possibility of a Lindor deal decreased when the Tribe dealt Corey Kluber to the Rangers, thus lessening Cleveland’s payroll commitments for the 2020 season.
The multi-positional ability of young shortstop Bo Bichette and, in particular, incumbent second baseman Cavan Biggio factored into Toronto’s pursuits. Both players expressed a willingness to change positions if it helps the team, and Biggio might end up playing a super-utility role regardless of who else the Jays might add.
Interestingly, Bichette wouldn’t have been changing positions had Gregorius been signed, as the Jays planned to use Gregorius as a second baseman. GM Ross Atkins and president Mark Shapiro gave Bichette a heads-up about the Gregorius pursuit, with Bichette saying, “It was presented to me as, ’We’re going after Didi, don’t worry, we’ve already told him you’re our shortstop.’ I’d imagine that’s probably a reason why he didn’t come here.”
After also receiving interest from such teams as the Brewers, Giants, and Reds, Gregorius signed a one-year, $14MM contract with the Phillies to become their new regular shortstop. (Gregorius himself displaced an incumbent shortstop in Jean Segura, who will now handle second base duties in Philadelphia.) Toronto’s plan to deploy Gregorius at second base both indicates the club’s confidence in Bichette’s ability to handle the shortstop position and also some likely trepidation about Gregorius’ defensive ability going forward. After coming back from Tommy John surgery in the fall of 2018, Gregorius’ glovework drew dire grades from the Defensive Runs Saved (-11) and infield outs above average (-13) metrics.

‘Blue Jays Have “Checked In” On Francisco Lindor…’
Yeah, … and I’ve “Checked In” on Kate Upton.
cubsfanbudman1908
As did I, but Justin Verlander has an insane price tag on her.
afsooner02
I “check in” on the powerball once a week myself….
Mario93
Exactly. And I’m a Jays fan, and I say the same.
wordonthestreet
Exactly. Enough of the “checked in” rumors
jaysfansince1977
As Shi noted “Due Diligence” of course they made the phone call to check in and say How much of our farm? All of it, okay Bye now! I also have no doubt they are still in contact with Boston and also the Pirates in regards to trades!
kbarr888
Old News…..
A statement was released that stated…..unequivocally…..that Lindor was “Not Available”.
Shi Davidi just needed something to write about
Polish Hammer
Actually he is available given the right price tag. He will 100% without a doubt be dealt eventually, and when those deals do go down they always trace back to the original kicking of the tires like this.
jimmertee
Clickbait article.
Any deal for lindor would start with Pearson and Bichette.
Les Chesterfield
Lol. Man u absolutely no understanding of today’s trade market. SD and LA have 5 players each they could have used as a headliner to get lindor and reds could have got him for senzel yet everyone has passed. No doubt Toronto has the assets to acquire him and they won’t get either one of those guys if a trade goes down
parksy78
Accorsing to Jim Bowden, Cleveland pretty much said, “no Lux, no Lindor.”
dshires4
If Lindor was traded to Toronto today, it would undeniably start with Pearson, and then probably a recent 1st round pick like Groshans or Manoah.
jimmertee
Yah, they would be asking (and getting) and haul from somewhere. Three low level prospects wouldn’t cut it.
its_happening
Chesterfield your comment was useless. Any deal for Lindor starts with Bichette, Pearson and go from there. No reason for you to respond like a knob.
phillyballers
I asked if he’d be available for my softball team, was willing to part with the left side of my infield and throw in a few coupons for 1 free Chic-fil-a sandwich.
Ducey
Doesn’t seem likely that Lindor will remain with CLE after 2022 when he becomes a FA. So perhaps there is some groundwork being set for a future trade or FA signing. At that point the Jay’s could be quite good.
lfrient1
Lindor becomes a free agent after the 2021 season, not after 2022. It is important to note the full year difference.
bigdaddyt
I honestly think Biggo is going to be the CF with either Shaw or Panik at 2nd
jaysfan1978
I think Grichuk is CF with Guerrero RF and Shaw 3B.
bigdaddyt
Grich is terrible don’t even think he should be a everyday player and unless Guerrero has dropped at least 50 pounds your not gonna see that Thiccc booty in the outfield
jbs32
I think Shaw is the plan for everyday 1B with Rowdy DHing. When they want to DH someone else Biggio can take their spot, Shaw take 2nd and Rowdy on first
Strike Four
Grichuk signed that deal though, so you’re getting him everyday in CF whether he’s terrible or not.
bigdaddyt
But he’s an average RF not CF. Jays have the money to just eventually say okay grich your a bench bat now don’t like it find a willing team to take you on
rocky7
Seems like Vlad Jr. doesn’t say no to the after game spread!
TheMick7
@rocky7: Good point! Or any spread for that matter. He does seem a bit exercise-averse though. What is he, about 5’7 / 325, and growing (sideways)? He’s not his WWE billed height of 6’2. It’s like Hulk Hogan being 6’8 or whatever they said he was when he was 6’3.
jimmertee
The Jays are hapless. They traded away Pillar for practically nothing and were left without a CFer. They traded for Derek Fisher to fill that hole, at the time gave up a tonne for him and he isn’t even a MLB level player.
Marner#16
Doesn’t matter the jays are little to none starting pitching 4th place awaits!
Ducey
Your Leaves are in 4th – in the wildcard standings! If you want to rip on franchise, there is no worse hype machine/ underdelivering mess than the mighty Leaves. No Cup for you! (Again)
melkor77
I don’t know man, the Canucks give them quite a go – no other big 4 team in town.
Ducey
Pillar is not good. Lifetime OBP of .297 and his defence has regressed. There is a reason he is still available. Getting anything for him was a good move.
tmlmikey
What was the ton to get Fisher? That was Sanchez trade, was it not. Sanchez is basically nothing right now.
jdgoat
A ton is nothing now
ellisburks
Pillar had negative trade value and was a below average cf hitting and fielding so no loss.
mlb1225
Pillar had an 89 OPS+ and .711 OPS in the three seasons prior to 2019. Plus the only value he had (fielding) started to decline in 2018. If you expected more than just a few lotto tickets prospect for him, then you were going to be dissapointed.
Dexxter
Pillar was non-tendered the year after his trade and is currently a free agent. He had little to no value when he was traded.
Not sure why the perception is that Jays traded such a great package for Fisher. Sanchez had been terrible or injured for 2.5 years before the trade. Ended up non tendered at seasons end. Biagini isn’t a bad reliever but certainly replaceable and didn’t make the Astros postseason roster. Cal Stevenson was the 25th ranked prospect in the Jays system.
Best comp I’ve heard for this was if the Giants traded Cueto (minus the contract), Derek Law and a lottery prospect for Fisher. Few people would say that’s “a tonne” but the profiles of the players are very similar to what the Jays gave up.
Fisher isn’t exactly a huge get…. but Jays definitely didn’t give up much.
its_happening
The Blue Jays already had a crowded OF. All Sanchez was was a simple salary dump. At the time he should have been kept and showcased as the setup guy after the break. Instead, they got Fisher.
The trade wasn’t necessary nor did the Blue Jays receive a player they need.
shawnjohn
Lmfao!! What a brutal comment!
And pillar has done what since then? Oh yeah… non-tendered because he finished his season with the same types of stats he always finished in toronto with, except the defense has declined too, so he’s more useless than ever.
They gave up a ton for fisher? Lmfao!!
Sanchez – non-tendered and was useful for 1 game
Biagini – dime a dozen reliever that most teams pay a single A prospect for at deadline time just to shore up the pen with some depth
Stevenson – was added to a trade with a pitching prospect to get none other than the the great Austin pruitt… definitely a top notch prospect the jays gave up!
No more #scoutseyes? I would hope not because if those are eyes of a scout, then those eyes need to be thoroughly tested
deok40
Lol joke of a post but it’s usually for #bs_eyes to post complete crap.
sufferforsnakes
If he was traded there, I doubt he’d re-sign with them.
Strike Four
Lindor doesn’t even move the needle on that Jays team, which is at least two years away from being relevant. That bullpen is an outright disaster and the rotation is either injury-prone (Ryu, Shoemaker) or bad form-prone (Anderson, Borucki). Pearson is on the way but the Jays have clear needs and getting an elite SS to replace an in-house SS who’s already shown he’s probably-elite, which will drain the farm to trade for, is just stupid and pointless.
Didi wants to play SS, if the Jays said “Come play 2B on our crappy team” he’s going to say no every time.
jdgoat
Borucki? He should be in the injury group, not bad one.
Melchez
Blue Jays need to focus on pitching. They have a decent enough infield. “due diligence” to check on Lindor… pshaa Why waste your limited resources on a position you have an inexpensive long term option for?
Quit shopping for fancy expensive bling you don’t need and spend that money on groceries.
shortytallz
All teams check in on everything
Les Chesterfield
Toronto has a slew of first round picks who are hovering around the 100 mark of top prospects. 3 of those guys will be enough to acquire lindor. Problem is- that still most likely makes them the 4th best team in the AL east
Marner#16
Doesn’t matter the jays are little to none starting pitching 4th place awaits!
OilCanLloyd
nope.
Marner#16
Don’t get me wrong . I like Bichette and Biggio. However Vladdy needs to lose some weight too many injuries and stop trying to stretch singles into doubles. Grich has a good year at the plate I’d leave him in RF. Will see how it plays out in CF. They can’t keep trying IF’s in the OF. I’ll never be sold on Gurriel Jr and Hernandez is a nightmare in the field!
coldbeer
It’s been widely reported that Vladdys conditioning work this offseason has been a primary focus. Stick with the times…
thunderlips
This is the funniest picture of Lindor ever
throwinched10
Any trade package would have to include Bichette, which makes no sense for the Jays. Perhaps there’s a chance the package could include Biggio and Pearson instead of Bichette but I don’t think the Jays are a real fit here.
Dexxter
I don’t think the Jays fit for Lindor. Undoubtedly a great player… but don’t see the Jays giving up the package it would take to land him with only 2 years of control. Especially with the first of those years being likely a non-competitive one for the team.
I do see the Jays as a great fit for an elite defensive SS though. Bichette and Guerrero I think will always be players that struggle a bit defensively at SS and 3B. An elite SS to bump Bichette to 2b or 3b and move Vlad to 1b would help the defence all around.
bleedingblue29
Bo Bichette: am I a joke to you?
gvnbuist
I understand writers probably need to produce content continually to get paid, but I don’t know how many readers are fans of the oft-published Team X checked in on Player Y articles.
Unless a deal comes to fruition or an article sheds light on a trade negotiation that was discussed but never consummated, I like to think most teams check in on most players. To not do so would be negligent.
wordonthestreet
Well said!
FSF
There are window shoppers and there are serious buyers. Sadly for Blue Jays fans, their front office is the former.
coldbeer
They just spent $20 mil on Ryu, amongst the $40 mil or so they’ve increased their overall budget for 2020. What are you talking about?
wordonthestreet
Stop the presses!
TheMick7
A more interesting question is: Who will pay the exorbitant cost to sign Lindor in FA? Seems as though most teams that can afford him have a set ss in place. Nationals seem to be in on just about every FA, but who knows.
I think that’s a more realistic discussion than – X team called about Lindor who won’t be traded anyway.
tribepride17
Surprised they are just now checking in. Lindor has been available for months. Revisiting past discussions? I’d take Vlad Jr plus two prospects
sufferforsnakes
I checked in on Raising Cane’s today. I went ahead and acquired some.
BartoloHRball
Did you double texas toast like a champ?
its_happening
It was reported that Bichette was willing to move to CF to open the door to Didi. Even Bichette knows CF is a weak spot. Bichette also wants to win and I can respect a guy willing to do what it takes to make the team better.
For those who debated who would start, it could be a Fisher/Teoscar platoon with Alford as an emergency. Grichuk doesn’t have the speed or confidence to play CF. Ask Cards fans.
If there’s any idea of Biggio taking on CF the Jays might want to move an OF for a 2B/SS.
Latest photo of Vlad suggests he’s in much better shape heading into 2020. He deserves the chance to show he can play 3B for a season.
