The Astros have added to the list of candidates for their surprise managerial opening. Brad Ausmus is in Houston presently to take an interview with the club, Mark Berman of FOX 26 was among those to report on Twitter.
Ausmus had two stints with the Astros during his playing career, accounting for ten of his 18 seasons in the majors. He has gone on to manage the Tigers and the Angels, though neither stint has turned out as hoped.
The Halos decided to move on from Ausmus after just one season, putting him into limbo for the 2020 campaign. Ausmus sat down with the Padres earlier in the offseason to discuss their opening, but did not get that gig and wasn’t prominently connected to any others.
Ausmus joins a long list of known candidates that includes quite a few other experienced skippers and some others who’d be managing for the first time. In the former camp are Dusty Baker, Jeff Banister, Buck Showalter, and John Gibbons. Candidates without prior MLB managerial experience include Joe Espada, Eduardo Perez, and Will Venable.

Ausmus would still be Managing the Angels if Arte Moreno didnt twist Eppler’s arm.
mark1125
Not good in Detroit. Angels dump him after 1 year. The place where he has a background in San Diego passed on him. Not sure why his name is in the mix.
tigersfan1320
It would be interesting to see how much of his failures have just been bad teams, and how much of it is that he’s just a bad manager.
macstruts
Lots of injuries with the Angels. In July he had them five games over 500.
There was just too much to overcome and he couldn’t get a starting pitcher to pitch more than five innings… if that.
Moreno wanted Maddon. Maddon was available and that’s why Ausmus was fired.
Just a nobody
Ausmus sucked as a player and sucks as a manager.
AngelDiceClay
I wanted Moreno to want Maddon
Danward56
Man,U said it.Brad Ausmas is by FAR the most over rated managers of all time.Man,but the duffus always trys to be the smartest guy in the room when truthfully,he’s the stupidest.
i like al conin
Nothing personal, but this post made me laugh seeing “doofus” and “tries” misspelled. Assuming iPhone typo.
Tigernut2000
Hey, he did lead the world in GIDP’s. That’s something.
Taximan
Maddon is maddening to watch as a fan. Ohtani will need another surgery by May unless the GM has a line to the dugout.
Players get injured by being placed out of position
Danward56
Who really cares?Ausmus sucked as a manager and why everyone thinks cuz he’s an ex catcher w/ marginal success that he’s some Great Brain that any team would be crazy NOT to see all that hidden Genius. We had him in Detroit,He sucked.Peroid.SUCKED!!!
johnrealtime
I love how “Great Brain” is capitalized. The implications
spinach
I think his punctuation is on the juice.
rocketman21
Dude … is this guy kidding me? Not sure if thats the Kings English sir but whatever it Is you have bastardized it.
lfcredsox
no the tigers would have sucked regardless of who managed them at that time
Melchez
Ausmus had a good team his first year in detroit.
Ejemp2006
Look at the Tigers roster he had. Verlander, Price, Porcello, Sanchez. Cabrera, Kinsler, JD Martinez, Avila, DH Martinez.
And they didn’t make the playoffs in the central.
Nope.
caldo19
Valid
a-a-a-astros
Yeah AJ was horrible in Arizona not sure what the Astros were thinking when they hired him. As us had two crappy teams to manage and got dumped by the Angels only because Maddon was available.

pd14athletics
A bit interesting that he’s in town to interview to manage the players that possibly had an impact on his last job, in a negative way. I know his firing was largely driven by Maddon’s availability, but what if sign stealing had an impact on Angels vs Astros games? If he has a handful more wins in 2019, would he have been on the hotseat?

Third time the charm?
Danward56
Never.Brad Ausmus will NEVER win anything.
orange2001
I agree, Ausmus was atrocious with the Angels last season. He’s not cut out to manage. He will never win as a manager.
Gwynning's Anal Lover
Rodney Linares, 3rd Base coach for the Rays wouldn’t be a bad choice. He coached many of the players in the minors that made it through the ‘Stros system; J.D. Martínez, Altuve, Correa, and Bregman. If not, the Sox should give him a call.
texasfury93
Can we fire Jim Crane?
ScottCFA
You could buy him out for $1 billion or so. Of course, if we had $1 billion we wouldn’t be on MLBTR chat boards!!!
Strosfn79
Forbes values the team at $1.8 billion.
Why would he sell for $1 bil?
Buck Jones
Forbes evaluation was before the scandal broke.lol
jjd002
Lol. The scandal isn’t going to effect the bottom line. The Astros are still worth $1.8 billion, via Forbes.
Buck Jones
I was joking btw

Vizionaire
he will be a great astros manager!
Disco Dave
good for you brad
rivera42
Ausmus sucks. Yes, please hire him Houston.
dmazcomp
I have no idea how much influence specific players have in decisions like this, but Verlander is certainly familiar with him. I vaguely recall that Brad supposedly helped Verlander with some analytical data while in Detroit which helped him regain his form in 2017 prior to being traded.
tiger68
Welcome back JV to the D! Poor Astro fans I feel for you if he is hired.
Just a nobody
Must be a bad managerial choice if someone feels bad for the Astros. That’s no in vogue right now.
JayKay
He said fans not organization. Unless it’s proven that a whole fan base cheated, in which case I’d agree with you.
tiger68
I did mean the fans, personally the cheating is a whole other statement. In the light of the cheating, if they hire Brad, fans will need lots of aspirins and good docs the those mouth dropping WTF moments. Also it would be a hell of a punishment for the cheating that occurred if he was hired!!!! Cheating will never get them through Brad’s horrific management skills. Not all former players make good managers, look at all the Tiger former managers. Brad carries no respect from his play and one who did not like him is JV. Keep that in mind.
wackymacky
I think Pete Rose would be a perfect fit.

Pete Rose Jr.?

throwinched10
He didn’t have a pitching staff on the Angels. Ohtani and Upton were hurt. Cozart was bad. The Angels only let him go because they wanted Joe. The Cubs did the same thing after one year of Rick Renteria. He may do well in Houston; look at Hinch in Houston compared to Hinch in Arizona.
AngelDiceClay
He didn’t want his SP to face A-line up the 3rd time that’s all you need to know about him.Even if the SP was pitching a shut out or with a good size lead
orange2001
Ausmus used “opener” relief pitchers. Enough said.
NorahW
The Yankees did that too.
MWeller77
Of course Hinch didn’t do well in Arizona: he didn’t have his MVTC (most valuable trash can)
jjd002
If you have to explain the acronym it isn’t funny.
orange2001
Please sign him.
Sincerely,
An Angels fan
HalosHeavenJJ
Angels fans would be happy. In reality, nobody could have won with that pitching staff and he does seem like the guy to implement the front office’s ideas without much questioning.
sergefunction
I hope the Astros name Brad Ausmus as manager. Their window will be shut tight.
Since they openly violated a specific and repeated commissioner edict, I’m open to forcing Manager Ausmus on the Astros for one full season. That’s plenty punishment enough for most baseball crimes.
bigdaddyhacks
Hahahaha yes! Do this you trash franchise.
Daver520
just another retread …
doyerblue32
If the Astros hire Asmus, they will have officially punished themselves more than the MLB punished them
its_happening
Ausmus receiving an undeserved interview thanks to his ties to Houston from his playing days. If he is their next manager the AL West is up for grabs.
Steve Lawrence
Geesh, so you guys all know more than the Astros? I’m a Tigers fan, and agree he was in over his head. But the Tigers were an aging, slow, overpaid bunch and both Verlander and Miggy had Core surgery (which takes 18 months to fully heal) while he managed Detroit. That said he did make several bonehead moves. He played 18 years in mlb so lol that he “sucked as a player.” He graduated from Dartmouth so lol that he is “stupid.” He should probably serve as a bench coach now and perhaps eventually get another head gig. But imho he is not the laughingstock you all are making him out to be.
Tigernut2000
Does Dartmouth offer baseball scholarships?
Santee Alley
No, they do not. No sports scholarships in the Ivy Leagues. Meaning he got in legitimately and graduated.
jjd002
And some managers it takes a few stops before it clicks. Or they just end up on a good team. A manager is only as good as his team. Whoever inherits this Astros team is going to have to be really bad to not make the playoffs.
its_happening
The 2014 Tigers were loaded and should have beat Baltimore in the ALDS. Ausmus blew enough games during that season (including a couple against my Jays) where they should have had home field in round 1. Ausmus was brutal. He also did not have the guts to push Verlander to being the 4th starter with a rotation featuring Scherzer, Price and Porcello.
Ivy League means you are highly education. Does not mean you are a smart baseball man. Ausmus wasn’t as a player and certainly isn’t as a manager.
IronBallsMcGinty
Haven’t heard any speculation of Mike Sciosia being interviewed by any of the three teams. Did he retire?
HalosHeavenJJ
Mike is laying low, for sure. I know he’s spending a decent amount of time at the RBI facility in LA showing kids the game and serving as a mentor. He’s always been a class guy.
But I haven’t seen his name mentioned, either. When you add up his minor, major, then managerial career he spent something like 34 straight years in baseball. He might be enjoying downtime.
ScottCFA
The man completely lacks fire. The Tigers would get screwed by a bad call, Brad would go out and calmly discuss with the ump, meekly shake his head, and go back into the dugout and spit more seeds. Players would crash through a brick wall for some managers; Ausmus is the complete opposite.
NorahW
So people have to have bad tempers to be good baseball managers?
kdub53
LMAO!!!
Strosfn79
Marisnick isn’t but he’s beloved and the current players still remember
Strosfn79
I always liked him as a player. He was very below average, despite a great glove, but he “fit” with the killer Bs and they were all great teammates.
He is an ivy league catcher who was always referred to as a future manager while he was playing.
That said, no way he gets the gig because of his record vs those he is competing against.
Even more important, though, is how he reacted to the Marisnick/ Lucroy collision
Marisnick is loved in the clubhouse.
No way the players accept him as the manager.
Say what you will, but the players have a say.
Vizionaire
marisnick won’t play much after a game against the angels in late march.
cookmeister 2
Good thing Marisnick isn’t on the Astros anymore
Vizionaire
ha!
619bird
Maybe Audmus is in the mix because he answered correctly if he prefers plastic to metal garbage cans.
FishyHalo
I think big league ball players will stop cheating, if they knew it’d lead to hiring Ausmus.
californiaangels
please get him astros … he could drop 25 wins of the astros no problem
warnbeeb
As a Tiger fan my impression of Ausmus was that umpires ignored him. Players eventually knew he wouldn’t back them up. Opposing managers also took advantage of him.
Say what you will about Jim Leyland and Ron Gardenhire, both have the respect of the umpires and opposing teams. Their players play(ed) for them. It seemed the Tigers were not tough under Brad. They weren’t afraid of him either. Not so with ‘Ol Smokey and Gardy.
Ausmus is front office material. Maybe a coach…but not a manager.
driftcat28 2
I actually like this move a lot
KENNETH A LICHTIG
Major League GM’s recycle managers. Why don’t they learn their lesson & get fresh blood to manage as the Angels did with Mike Scioscia in 1999? .
Dgi3rd
Most of the comments I’ve read don’t carry no weight However I do believe Brad’s a Solid candidate to Manage the Astro’s he’s old school but young enough to handle the analytics his former teammates have Cranes ear to speak on his behalf both good & bad & that also helps him lead the current group as the Killer B’s will have his back & I do believe Lance Berkman would make for a fresh bench coach if needed this team needs good former Veterans who played the game right & who have Jim Cranes Trust, plus the know how make us the best pitching coach in MLb Brent Strom whom AJ Hinch relied upon &
analytics team that Jeff Luhnow but together as Jim Crane said there a lot great things the two them brought to the Houston Astro’s that why so many teams want to hire so many of the Astros front office Personnel & I would be willing to bet ever person hired away from the team knew about the competitive edge that made the Astros so good & if you can’t beat them then hire there people to find out & implement there finding into there own team & I’m in agreement with Pedro on Mr Fiers he shouldn’t have waited 2 years down the road & whine about something he partook that’s the same as being a sore loser & Mr Manfred & Mr Torre ought to have done more than send out memo like called a owners & GM meeting people get hundred of memos ever day & MLB has a record of moving slowly on matters but once it open up instant repay it ought to have laid down the Law & rules & Bylaws mean more than a Memo Torre did a much better job on his memo however these were to Brand New Rules plus Mr.Manfred let Media & made him eat his own Memo I’m fairly sure all 30 were trying to take advantage of instant replay to what extent I don’t know however knowing that MlB has a reputation of always pushing the boundaries I see ever time teams clash over the smallest thing just wait till the auto strike zone becomes part of the game it surely won’t shorten the legth of a ballgame everone accepts the rules & Terms laid out by both Mr.Manfred & Mr Torre & pls no Memos ever team needs. Player rep & a Front Office Rep plus a Umpire Rep at the same table before we start adding more Technology to the game I’m for Technology & I do accept the fact that AJ ought have Policed the team better & I do realize Mr. Manfred had to stand by his word it’s just to bad that to great Baseball People paid the price has for the players be it Astros or any other player I repeat a old saying don’t throw bricks in a glass house as human being we all fall short of Perfection.
sergefunction
Windy. Carries no weight.
AngelDiceClay
Of course the previous postings carry no weight with you they’re pushing for the Astros to hire Aumaus because they want to see your cheating team FAIL.And that that symbol to the right of the space bar is called a period. Trying using it in your next long winded rant. How ironic.
