The 2019 season marked the end of a legendary managerial run with the Giants for Bruce Bochy, but the future Hall of Famer has publicly voiced an interest in continuing his managerial career in the future. FOX 26’s Mark Berman reported just yesterday that Bochy was of interest to Astros owner Jim Crane as he seeks a new skipper following A.J. Hinch’s firing, but Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic tweets that Bochy does not plan to pursue any managerial openings at this time.
At the time he indicated a desire to continue his managerial career, the 64-year-old Bochy termed the 2020 season as something of a “sabbatical” for him as he “hit the pause button.” But while a return in 2021 or beyond is seemingly plausible, it doesn’t appear as though Houston’s reported interest in him is reciprocated at this time.
The Astros have already interviewed Buck Showalter and are set to meet with John Gibbons, too, as they look for a new dugout leader. At this juncture of the offseason, interviewing coaches with other clubs could be more difficult than it would’ve been earlier in the winter when teams had yet to set their staffs and had more time to find suitable replacements for departing coaches. That said, Rosenthal tweets that the Cubs would be willing to let third base coach Will Venable interview for the Astros’ vacancy. Venable, like Bochy, was on Berman’s reported list of potential targets for the Houston organization.
Managing the Stros, Sox, or Mets is below him
I miss Bochy’s awesome mustache.
He doesn’t want to stain his career.
why is it a stain to join these organizations after these things happened? everyone was punished already.
Some people don’t have very good critical thinking skills.
LOL.
The players were not and will not be punished. The manager’s job is to oversee the players. It would be a stain on anyone’s career to work with these players.
Everyone? Really?
Pipe down sparky
You need to grow up
Bochy would be great for any team. Since he’s not a candidate for the Red Sox l think Dustin Pedroia would be a great pick.
Below him? I’d rather pull Jim Leland out of retirement.
Thank God about Bochy, cuz we all know he’ll bring the Panda with him.
he’s out for the year anyway, is he not?
Yes, injury…..
Yup. Lol
Too bad, Bochy would be great for the Astros or Red Sox. The Mets a below him though, better off staying retired
The Mets opening is the only desirable opportunity of the three. The Mets are not embroiled in a horrific scandal.
Horrific? That’s a bit hyperbolic.
It’s pretty horrific. Their actions cost players millions of dollars in free agency, caused others to be sent down and possibly miss their opportunity to live a dream they’ve been working towards for decades, reappropriated untold millions of economic benefits from other cities, teams, staff, players, gamblers, contest entrants, and merchandise and ticket purchasers, and the list goes on. Not to mention what it did to perception of the game and confidence in the results. Not hyperbole.
No different than those that chose to use PEDS which was against the law to possess without a prescription. I have no issues with those that used what was then available at GNC and was before MLB put rules in place. Those however who used needles for example or had stuff sent elsewhere and paid cash to hide what they were doing, knew it was wrong.
This
I guess we all find horror in different ways. It’s a shameful scandal. But being horrified by extremely well compensated athletes making slightly less is hyperbolic.
Do you find horror in individuals pushing their competitive ego to where they violate ethics and possibly laws? In that same vain, I can only imagine the horror you may have dealt with after more substantial issues like the housing market crash.
Sports is a form of entertainment, finding the scandal horrific seems a bit melodramatic.
You pulled a hammy on this one
As someone who lost a lot of equity in the housing crash, yes I found that horrendous. Many lost equity in the form of bets and careers in this horrendous scandal. And I’m not talking about only millionaires. But whatever, cheating is ok with you guys. It’s just a game
Actually, I described it as a shameful scandal.
I didn’t know Mike Fiers posted here!! What’s up Mike? Are you giving back the WS ring?
Oh, and I don’t remember reading in the report that the Astros did this every game, throughout the entirety of the game, and that every player was involved. I do however remember reading in the report that they stopped using the technology early in 2018 due to its ineffectiveness, which makes sense since they hit much better on the road in 2017.
I also remember reading in the first article that Beltran brought the idea over from his previous team, which if I remember correctly was the Yankees. And I have read that up to 8 other teams were doing something similar. And we already know the Red Sox were caught using technology to steal signs.
So Mike, tell me again how the Astros caused all that bs that you mentioned.
Which specific rule did they break? Is there a rule about stealing signs? If so, can you cite it for me?
Also a perennial joke
I think Bochy is smart to stay out of this mess. Chances are very high that whoever is brought in for any of the 3 teams is a 1 year caretaker manager at best, so all 3 managerial positions will be open again for the following year. Bochy can take his year to step away and then have some attractive options in 2021 with no negative baggage attached.
Except is won/loss record.
smart. very smart! why associte with cheaters?
he should disconnect his phone number at this point. sure he just wants to be left alone for the year.
Just saw him in a belltone commercial
So much for Bochy in the MLBTR poll……
Make Baseball Great Again!
Baseball, like the U.S., has typically been one of the best. In both cases, maybe less so these days.
You’re free to leave. Take “beisbol” with you
If I was a Boston fan, it would likely be difficult to give any nonnegative feedback. It seems you’re having that struggle.
Tongue in cheek here nut maybe he’s waiting for more shoeS to drop and wants to make he’s not named in a future report….Seriously, he’s had a managerial career and deserves to do whatever he chooses to do professionally speaking.
The Mets will bring back Terry Collins for 1 year. They’ve already offered the job to Gil Hodges and Yogi Berra but they said no because they are dead. They also asked Davey Johnson and Bobby Valentine but they said they’d RATHER be dead. Thy called Dallas Green but he didn’t answer.
Probably because Dallas Green is dead as well.
LOL!
So how much (if any) do the Astros have to pay Hinch? The one year suspension is deducted right? I wonder did they get out of the rest of his contract “for cause?”
Probably negotiated. Could be messy. Not many talk about how the Astros in recent years made pitchers look so much better once they arrived. Was there more cheating going on?
Trevor Bauer thinks so.
Thanks!
One factor is that it’s easier to take the mound with a 4 run lead. If you know your hitters, at home, have an artificial advantage, then it allows you to be more aggressive on the mound.
It seems likely. Based upon the terms of the contract, Hinch’s failure to address the scheme may have also violated terms of his contract.
Thanks!
Bochy is a overrated. Dude has an overall career losing managerial record.
And 3 titles.
Over 3 decades
But the 3 titles came in 5 years. THAT’s a dynasty. I respect that. But I get your point as well.
When the braves make the playoff and lose in 3 this year. Bochy should consider that job
Teams aren’t paying what it takes to get a Bochy type manager. They will pay no experienced manager peanuts and call it a day
