1:20pm: The Yankees announced that they’ve acquired minor league shortstop Cristian Perez in exchange for Adams. The 21-year-old had a down season in his first year at Class-A Advanced in 2019, hitting .252/.290/.285 in 424 plate appearances.
Perez has never shown any semblance of power in the minors and doesn’t walk much. However, he’s consistently posted low strikeout rates and hit for a respectable average (career .263/.312/.319). Kiley McDaniel and Eric Longenhagen of FanGraphs called him an “instinctive defender with some feel to hit” in their write-up of the Royals’ farm system early in the 2019 season.
1:01pm: The Yankees and Royals have agreed to a deal that will send right-hander Chance Adams from New York to Kansas City, tweets MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. Once rated as one of the organization’s best prospects, Adams was designated for assignment last week in order to open a roster spot for newly signed Gerrit Cole. The two teams have yet to formally announce the deal.
Adams, 25, has struggled to an 8.18 ERA in a small sample of 33 MLB innings but isn’t long removed from being considered one of baseball’s best pitching prospects. In the 2017-18 offseason, each of Baseball America, MLB.com ad Baseball Prospectus ranked Adams within the game’s top 100 overall prospects. At that point, he’d just wrapped up a season that saw him pitch to a 2.45 ERA with 8.1 K/9 against 3.5 BB/9 in 150 1/3 innings between Double-A and Triple-A.
Things haven’t gone smoothly for Adams since, as he’s posted a 4.72 ERA in nearly 200 Triple-A innings since that time (in addition to the aforementioned MLB struggles). Adams has seen his walk rate tick upward as his strikeout percentages have dipped considerably from his time in the low minors. However, he won’t turn 26 until next August and has a minor league option remaining, so there’s little harm in a rebuilding club like the Royals taking a speculative look in hopes of striking gold.
They really taking a chance on this one
I see what you did there
Why not? Worst thing that happens is he struggles and they let him go
That was like 300 feet over your head.
Cards04 totally missed the joke….
lol right?
No he didn’t. A person can’t miss that joke no matter how dense he is.
What he did is what YOU ALL missed LOL !!
He moved past the joke and actually made a real comment.
You just blew my mind
You’d be a terrible lawyer, Gary.
relax gary
I’m so confused: is it a chance on Chance or not? And should this be funny? I’m not sure if I should lol or not…..
Garaaaaay, get lost. Ew!
Andriod, that’s not very nice. Anyhow, I upvoted you.
No you shouldn’t.
My take is the Yankees gave up on a pitcher they once considered a top prospect and in return got a traditional Freddie Patek type young SS prospect back for a player they DFAed and had to move. Hoping win-win. While I hate the Yankees I try to always root for the underdog player.
Adams takes up a spot on the 40. Might as well get something for him. Good move.
Watch Chance Adams become a superstar!
Rights, it a-dams shame he was dealt or something or other.
Bet he goes 13-8 with a 3.25 ERA next year.
Thats generous
thanks i pride myself on generosity
It is the giving time of year.
I think he means at AAA.
With the juiced ball in AAA, a 3.25 ERA will not be in the minors long enough to get up to 13 wins.
I can see him in the race for the Cy Young.
Technically, isn’t every big league pitcher in that race?
There have been several oddball winners, so I agree
Lol, 13 wins with that offense behind him? No way.
He’s a short stop, I highly doubt it.
He could have a 2.00 era and not get 13 wins lol
Cool
This guys numbers are a reason why prospects are so hard to figure out. His minor league numbers were insane.
Adams had surgery on his throwing arm after the 2017 season and was simply never the same after. It was visible immediately from the onset of spring training, as his once 95 mph+ velocity had regressed to a sub standard 91-93 range. While there were hopes he could regain his velocity with time, it simply never happened, and his results at all levels never rebounded. He was broken long before he made his major league debut, sadly. He began his professional career in the bullpen, and I’d have to think that is where he’ll have to end it if he wants to find success.
He’s pretty easy to figure out. Doesn’t strike out enough people and walks too many.
That seems like a really bad combination for good numbers.
I wanted Oaklanf to take a chance
Really Wanted Oakland to take this chance on Adams
Bona-fide contenders shouldn’t be in the game of “taking a chance” on players, they should be making certifiable upgrades wherever possible. Adams is no upgrade, but Dellin Betances and Will Harris are!
Speaking of which, where is Dellin gonna sign man?? Come on already!
Hope he does well in KC and develops into a mid rotation guy
Well there’s a chance.
worth a shot. didnt exactly get one on New York.
25 innings of 8.53 ball. Blech.
its all of 25 innings in a big hitter’s haven. also has only been given one start, and hasnt spent consistent time in the Majors. none of those factors may, in reality, be acting too hard upon this situation, but they could collectively be having at least some effect.
He pitched in 10 Road games and only 6 Home games… try again
25 is the key number not 8.53. You’re welcome.
He’s worth a chance.
A few years ago, I was sold this guy was gonna be the real deal for the Yankees. It’s crazy how basically one bad experience can spiral you into a mental rut completely out of control.
What did they get in return?
Christian Perez
I’m not a Royals fan but I think this is a good move for them. It’s one of those moves that the potential is greater than the risk.
His recent results would say this is a terrible move, could he turn it around? Maybe but to say this is a “good move”
is baffling to say the least. It’s a move, that’s all.
It’s a good move for a team like the Royals. If he is good, they just got a good starter for almost nothing. If he’s bad, then they can release him.
@Moneyballer
You guys are acting as if the Royals gave up a top prospect. Perez may never even sniff AAA. Meanwhile, at least Chance can be a fringy AAAA pitcher and eat some innings. And to be honest, the Yanks aren’t the best at getting the most out of their SP prospects. Severino, German and Montgomery hopefully will be the exceptions,
Yes I like it for the Royals too little risk at all could turn into a solid piece of the future for them.
Yankees sign Royals star players as free agents, Royals take on Yankee scraps, this is the state of major league baseball.
@Moneyballer
Except the Yanks haven’t signed an ex Royal star FA since…….I can’t even remember.
Johnny Damon. Sort of.
Beltran once played for the Royals too lol
Roger Maris.
@Joe Says…
Acquired as a FA from the Red Sox.
@Begamin
Acquired as a FA after leaving St. Louis.
+south
lol I know.
That’s why I said sort of.
Danny Tartabull
@rmullig2
Bingo. You got one. From way back in ’92.
Wrong
The Yankees make money and send it to the Royals, whose owner, David Glass, was CEO of WalMart and made billions paying employees starvation wages supplemented with the tax dollars of working Americans.
Good news, he finally found a form of socialism he endorses – the kind that gives him tens of millions of dollars in free money every year, forever. I can see why you’d be on-board with that.
Bad chance to take. Bad chance!
Stop commenting everywhere on this thread. Your takes are horrendous.
Nah I’m good, I like to comment just like you!
Given the historical player movement between the Yankees and Kansas City (including the A’s), justice would be served if Adams somehow improbably became a Cy-Young-Award-caliber ace for the Royals. Here’s hoping against all hope.
It’s interesting how the headline reads “Yankees trade….” rather than “Royal acquire…” like in the majority of the other posts.
Its almost like more people care about the Yankees than the Royals or something
blah blah Yankees Bias blah blah
This, of course, makes him Second Chance Adams.
Budomp bump
Soon to be Last Chance Adams.
So, Perez will be on top 100 prospect lists in 2021, isn’t that how those work? Yankees = all stud prospects, just for being in the org?
Adams was supposedly a top 50 (#51) guy according to Baseball Prospectus!
Envy is in the air
I like how you think, Strike Four, and somehow it makes perfect sense to me!
Adams was good until he got injured. He was a top rated prospect before his injury. But alas, the Yankees are for sure the only team that has high rated prospects that dont pan out, right?
I’m sure you can give plenty of examples of that. Clint Frazier was rated high before he came to the Yankees. Urshela and Tauchman weren’t rated at all. Andujar was rated in the 60s somewhere, Severino wasn’t rated that highly in the top 100 but not a can’t miss. Jordan Montgomery wasn’t rated highly at all So tell me about all the Yankee highly rated prospects who flamed out. Adams rating came before bone spurs in his elbow at the time he was rated the 7th best prospect in the Yankees farm system
You’re not wrong the yankee bias is getting old. Mlb start making all teams matter or ratings will continue to drop
Strike Four
Lame, uninformed hater comment. Again. Getting really old.
Strike Four
Adams was a highly rated stud until he got injured, had surgery, from which he never fully recovered. Duh. Got it, bonehead? Or is that too much info for ya?
Strike Four
Yup. ALL the Yankee minor leaguers are top 100, don’t you know? NOT. So, um, your friggin’ point? Is WRONG!
@Strike Four
So we’re going to act like every organization doesn’t have a top 100 prospect that failed to do anything?
I see in your future a psychiatric visit where the doc shows you a doll dressed in a Yankee uniform and he asks “where did he touch you”? You have issues bro.
getting so tired of this. guys dont get awards for being top-100 on anyone’s list, and opposinh GMs dont look at rankings when making changes. to be honest, part of the reason for these generous rankings could be because the Yankees are such good talent evaluators/developers that prospect evaluators give them the benefit of the doubt.
Yawn.
@CalcetinesBlancos
A complete yawn. I thought 50 comments, tops.
Yankees prospects usually overhyped, i remember this guy was untouchable in sonny gray trade talks with oakland
And at the time, he shouldve been considered untouchable. He was doing very well
And wouldn’t that be the best time to sell high?
He got injured…
+Priggs
I mean, if you had a crystal ball and were able to see that he gets an injury that stunts his growth/ability to play at a high level, then duh thatd be the perfect time to sell high. Thing is that we dont have a crystal ball. Besides, the Yanks were right to move the prospects they did for Sonny anyway. Im actually surprised the A’s bit on Jorge Mateo
how come no one on this site understand what hindsight bias is?
I’ll let you know in a few years
It wasn’t even just the Yankees that overhyped Adams, many Yankees fans did as well, I wasn’t one of them, though. Just like I wasn’t one of the many Yankees fans that overhyped Jesus Montero.
Before Adams’ injury, why didnt you rate him highly? Just because? He was doing extremely well before the surgeries but wasnt the same afterwards.
That’s the coin toss with prospects it seems like. Some never pan out, others do.
That’s true and an even bigger example of that is Brandon Wood, who was supposed to be a power hitting third baseman for a very long time, instead he was one of the worst hitters of all time.
Yeah, like Robinson Cano? Go try to find his name on a top 100 list.
Cano’s older than lists.
Yup. ALL the Yankee minor leaguers are top 100, don’t you know? NOT. So, um, your friggin’ point? Is WRONG!
@Asfan0780
I see your Chance Adams and raise you a Todd Van Poppel. See small market teams aren’t immune to over hyped prospects either.
Under the definition of 4A player there’s Chance Adams.
Seems like a good get for the Royals. Hope it works out for them.
He actually was coveted for a while and never seemed to demonstrate his potential. If a smaller market team can unlock that potential, they just made one of the better pitching trades of this offseason.
He was injured, had surgery, lost velo, never was the same.
Why can’t the yankees develop starting pitching?
because you touch yourself at night
man, you should do stand-up
Severino-German?
German was from the marlins and Severino isn’t an ace I’m sorry. Very solid but they needed cole to have a legit #1
Just because Sevy isnt a top 3 SP doesnt mean the Yanks didnt develop him well.
1. you can develop a guy after you aquired him
2. Severino would probably be an ace if his healthy could cooperate.
German isn’t really a great example as a pitcher that they’ve developed, everybody can get the backend guys.
An 18 win “backend” guy. I assume what you mean is BOTR guy.
Who knows. coaching maybe? We’ll see now that Larry is gone
Not bad
should have traded him in 16 or 17 when he had some shine. Oh well. it is what it is
Rich Hill’s wife tried to see the manager a little too hard lol
Completely wrong article.
Good move ! I like to see Luis cessa traded maybe get a centerfielder. Who can bat above 240 ……
And someone did give him a chance. I thought the giants or mariners would have tbh
Really bad Robin Williams movie
“I’m depending on you son,
To pull the family through,
My son, it’s all left up to you…”
Is .263 really a respectable average these days? Especially when it doesn’t come with any home runs or walks? I’d lean no.
He’s a yankee now they’ll spin anything into a positive. If he hit .250 in AA he’ll somehow be a top prospect.
Yup. ALL the Yankee minor leaguers are top 100, don’t you know? NOT. So, um, your friggin’ point? Is WRONG!
Now that Perez is in the yankees system he’ll probably turn into the next gleyber torres
Doubtful. Sounds like a long-odds lottery ticket.
more like a scratch card
I’m very surprised Eppler didn’t take a chance on Chance for the Halos rotation…Miss out on Cole and trade for the who lost his roster spot to Cole…
Good move for the Royals, even if he does nothing he might just go to a foreign league and the team will have won the deal in all likelihood.
What if Cristian Perez turns into a star?! No one is talking about that. Yanks scout pretty well.
then Ill tell you hindsight is 20/20 because 10/10 scouts probably think this guy is at best a bench bat in the Majors, and that’s if he even gets there.
The problem with Chance Adams is that he never recovered from injury. The Royals should hire Patch Adams to be the team physician. Maybe he won’t fix him but it would be kind of funny to watch Chance pitch with the rubber ball on his nose.
It’s a Trojan horse from the Evil Empire, as soon as he gets to KC little Yankees are going to explode out of his belly and start impregnating all the women in KC and they’ll put nypd blue on repeat on the big screen at Kaufman stadium. Dayton Moore, you fool!
138 comments on basically nothing. Must be late December.
