The Phillies’ “main focus” at this week’s Winter Meetings in San Diego is to find infield help, general manager Matt Klentak said Monday (via Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer, on Twitter). Klentak added that the club expects high-end third base prospect Alec Bohm to arrive in the majors sometime next year. That could affect the Phillies’ offseason plans, but as of now, they appear to have openings at third and at least one middle infield position (depending on where they want 2019 shortstop Jean Segura to line up). They’ve shown interest in the best shortstop on the open market, Didi Gregorius, and signing him would presumably bump Segura to second.
- The Braves, one of Philly’s rivals, are also looking to address their infield. Third base is high atop the team’s wish list, GM Alex Anthopoulos revealed, as David O’Brien of The Athletic tweets. Ideally, the club will land a “big bat” there (Josh Donaldson, one of the Braves’ premier players in 2019, is a free agent). They’re also seeking a defensively capable backup at the hot corner. If the Braves aren’t able to find a high-impact hitter for the position, though, Anthopoulos indicated they’re open to adding one in their outfield.
- Matt Duffy has drawn interest from a variety of organizations, some of which may view him as a utility option, per MLBTR’s Steve Adams (Twitter link). Duffy, whom the Rays released toward the end of last month, has experience at both middle infield spots, third base and the outfield corners. The 28-year-old has had a couple successful major league seasons as a hitter, but injuries helped limit him to a punchless .252/.343/.327 line with one home run over 169 plate appearances in 2019.
- Righty Casey Kelly seems primed for a return to the majors, with MLB.com’s Jon Morosi tweeting that he’s “drawing interest” from MLB teams. Once an elite prospect with the Red Sox, Kelly largely floundered in the majors in parts of four seasons with the Padres, Braves and Giants from 2012-18. However, the 30-year-old Kelly may have put himself back on the big league map in the Korea Baseball Organization in 2019, when he logged a 2.55 ERA with 6.3 K/9 against 2.0 BB/9 in 180 1/3 innings as a member of the LG Twins.
- Outfielder Daniel Nava is in San Diego lobbying for a return to the bigs, per John Tomase of NBC Sports Boston. Nava, known for his on-base skills in the majors from 2010-17, didn’t play at all in 2018 because of injuries and then didn’t suit up in affiliated ball last season. The 36-year-old instead spent almost all of 2019 as a member of the Kansas City T-Bones of the independent American Association.
- Like Nava, left-hander Phil Coke is at the meetings trying to drum up major league interest, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com tweets. Coke, who says he’s healthy after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2018, had a respectable MLB run with several teams from 2008-16. He hasn’t pitched professionally since suiting up in the Mexican League in 2018.

Bohm won’t arrive in the majors until later in 2020 unless he hits like .800 in ST. But his presence means Phils will be one of the players without a chair in the Rendon-Donaldson-Andujar-Bryant 3B game . Sign a stopgap like Holt or Shaw or Bamboo Miller .

The Phillies would be wise to shop Hoskins now. He’s currently controlled and cheap. But Boras is his agent, so if he has a decent year in the future……
OK, LF was a disaster. But it wasn’t his position. I’ve since seen him play 1B, and that doesn’t seem to be his position either…..I’ve seen his defense lose the Phillies games in 2019.
He’s best in the AL as a part-time 1B, part-time DH. Find a rebuilding team that’s gullible enough to think they can do something with him. I see him as a Mark Trumbo at best – having a few good statistical power years, but not doing much to help his team win.
♪
Hoskins walks a ton. That sets him apart some from other low average, 30 home run players with no position. His footwork is bad, which sometimes has him out of position to catch even routine throws.
He could show that 2019 was just a sophomore slump offensively but they’ll have to trade him if the defense doesn’t improve.

i will be quite surprised if the Braves pick up Donaldson. Not only is there a lot of competition for his services but the contract demand may be out of the Braves range. They would have to clear payroll to make this realistic and even then they would be looking at a $150 million payroll. Sure it’s conceivable they may go up this high since they seem to be willing to spend this year but as I said they would have to trade Inciarte and maybe Folty to clear out enough to have this make sense. Even if they brought in Donaldson and brought up their payroll, Will they have enough in reserve to make trade deadline moves in July ? So will they sign him ? Doubt it.

Christian Pache, Touki Toussaint, and Ender Inciarte for Kris Bryant, Kyle Hendricks, and Contreras.
bravesfan88
You would have to keep going with the Braves side if the Cubs would even entertain that idea..Also, they just need to free up some payroll, NOT trade away three of their top 5-6 players..
I love the IDEA of adding Bryant, but he would just leave in a year or two, and giving up Pache, PLUS likely Muller and whatever else it would take is not worth just a year or two of Bryant..
In Pache, the Braves have their future CF’er for the next 6-7 years. We already know he will bring GG defense, but his bat has also been constantly improving. We are now talking about a 25/25 capable player that is also going to be one of the best defensive CF’ers in all of baseball…Think about what that would be worth in the market right now…I would much rather trade Waters if I was forced to trade one of the two. Even though, in Waters you are talking about a solid defender capable of playing all 3 OF spots hisself. Waters, if he continues his trajectory and continues to progress will likely be a .280, 20-25HR player, capable of swiping 15-20 bags, and hitting near the top of the order…
I dream of a Waters, Pache, and Acuña Jr. outfield, so I REALLY hope they keep them together!! Pache and Waters will likely be ML ready by September, so no reason to mortgage the future just for one season..

The inflated Teheran trade proposals live on through you, my friend. ¡Viva la insanity!
bravesfan88
Oh yeah, now every inflated trade proposal also includes Ender, Riley, Touki, and/or Camargo..
Speaking of inflated, ridiculous trade proposals, every Braves fan wants either Bryant, Marte, Lindor, Story, Contreras, or Mookie.. Then, countless delusional Braves’ fans also seem to think that is not even enough, that somehow the Braves will not only acquire one of those stars, but they will also acquire another pitcher with them. Whether it is Hendricks or Darvish with Bryant, Kluber with Lindor, Price with Mookie, Gray with Story, or Archer with Marte…Idk why the Braves have not pulled one of those trades off yet, they are so reasonable and realistic!! Lol
Pacman
Might sound crazy and possibly inflated, but the Braves are more in line to deal with teams that have experience dealing with in the past, ie Dodgers, Rangers, and the Royals. Defensive metrics aside, I think the Braves could go after Jorge Soler. He makes 4 million the next two years. He is a powerful RH bat and the Royals need multiple prospects, most notably pitching. I think Inciarte (basically a salary swap), Waters, and Wright could get the job done. Soler could be the power hitter we need in the 4 spot.
bravesfan
I think a KB for Ender, Riley deal is reasonable assuming we add some solid pitching prospects to the deal. Could make a lot of sense. Ie Ender Riley Wright and ur name of pitching prospects, for KB. That should at least get the conversation going. I think it’s incredibly tough to gauge KB’s value right now until MLB rules on his years of control.
bravesfan
More I thought about this the more I think Ender would have to be held out for salary reasons. If the cubs aren’t gonna pay KB for his current salary, they definitely won’t want to pay Ender for his. It’s reasonable, but clearly KB’s is reasonable also lol

A “declining” Bumgarner is still better than Fried, Faulty, and whichever overrated pitching prospect they throw in there.
The Braves still have a problem in the rotation and Hamels alone does not make them better. Hamels and DK essentially cancel each other out, I’m not saying Bumgarner is the savior, but since I know the Braves truly don’t care about winning (signing Cole), Bumgarner is at least a good option to fill in.
Instead, we might get an expensive umbrella at third…if even!
