With Anthony Rendon off the market, teams looking for third base upgrades could do a lot worse than Josh Donaldson, the top remaining free agent at the position. The Twins are one of the teams that remains linked to Donaldson, according to Darren Wolfson of SKOR North, though they are perhaps positioned on the periphery of the race to land Donaldson.
The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal cites the Nationals—who suddenly find themselves lacking at the hot corner with Rendon’s departure—and the Braves as the two frontrunners for the 34-year-old slugger, and as Wolfson notes, Minnesota may struggle to compete with the familiarity the Braves offer or the raw dollar amount the Nats could bring to the table.
Donaldson is said to be seeking a four-year deal, and a team’s willingness to go to that length could very well be the deciding factor for his camp. The Rangers, frequently mentioned as a suitor for Donaldson, have reportedly backed off their pursuit for that very reason, and the first team to concede on that front may wind up with Donaldson. We’ll see just how far Minnesota is willing to go for Donaldson, who would be 37 years old in the fourth year of a hypothetical contract. For what it’s worth, MLBTR predicted in early November that Donaldson would land a three-year deal in his second straight crack at free agency.
The Twins have hardly been ones to make a splash with their spending in recent years, but last year made a savvy signing in the form of Nelson Cruz, who catalyzed an offense that rates among the best in recent memory. And with a fair amount of payroll flexibility this winter, they’ve long been rumored to be players for names like Donaldson or pitchers Madison Bumgarner and Hyun-Jin Ryu. And one could argue that the team’s resources would be better spent on a rotation upgrade, particularly in light of the recent departures of Kyle Gibson and Martin Perez in free agency.
While the market for third basemen appears to be thinning, there’s no shortage of contending teams that could stand to upgrade at the position. That could mean a more competitive market for the likes of Donaldson and trade candidates Kris Bryant and Kyle Seager. Teams who refuse to go to a fourth year for Donaldson and who can’t meet the Cubs’ demands for Bryant could pivot to the likes of Seager or Maikel Franco as cheaper, yet still serviceable, options. For the Twins, keep an eye on those names should Donaldson prove too rich for their blood, though there’s still an outside chance they win the bidding war.
angt222
Twins need to go for it and nab a WS title. Their fans deserve it. Sign MadBum, Donaldson and Betances. That IMO, would make MIN a legit contender for at least the AL pennant.
RedFeather
A World Series in Minnesota? Man that sounds cold.
thomps07
It was actually a pretty warm fall until late November.
nymetsking
Warm days maybe, but WS games are played at night. Half of October 2019 shows lows of below 40, which is what you’re sitting in for late night WS games. Not to disparage Target, because it is a beautiful stadium, but I was surprised they built an outdoor venue. Postseason and March/early April must be rough.
Strike Four
Its snows in May though
StandUpGuy
Donaldson is going to Tue Nationals or the Braves. The Twins will never outbid the Nats and the Braves are the only team he might take a SLIGHT paycut for. If the Braves match DC’s offer, then he stays in Atlanta. If Donaldson leaves the Braves it will be for the biggest offer. The Twins are NOT going to make the biggest offer. The Nats can outspend them for days now that Rendon is gone. The darkhorse would be the Dodgers who can outspend the Twins as well. Heck… Regardless of recent reports, the Rangers are still more likely to get JD than the Twins are, and the Rangers aren’t getting him either. He will either go after the most money or the city of Atlanta. That means Nats, Braves and maybe Dodgers are in the mix. Sorry Twins fans. I don’t make the facts, I just report them. I would rather JD end up in Minny than DC or LA but it’s just not happening.
Ddubbl
Maybe the cold could be an advantage for the Twins if they somehow don’t get stuck playing Yankees…ugh.
twinsfan368
No incorrect. The twins could outspend pretty much anyone in the majors because their owner is the 4th richest person in pro sports. They’ve always had the money, it’s just they don’t spend it and that’s why our fan base gets pissed
angt222
I think MIN and COL are the only teams that always start the regular season on the road because the weather conditions in Minnesota and Colorado aren’t favorable for baseball.
twinsfan368
The twins played opening day at target field vs the Indians last year
prov356
StandUp – “Sorry Twins fans. I don’t make the facts, I just report them.”
Express your opinion, but nothing you said was factual. It is all conjecture and speculation. Let the baseball people report the facts.
rocknwell
I wonder how many times you can repeat where he will end up
Finlander
“Facts”…lol. I would suggest that a team like the Twins, who DO have payroll space galore to work with, might more easily go to 4 years on JD than the NL teams you mention due to the DH being available. He could split time there toward the end of a 4 year deal and still contribute good value – Cruz should be gone by then. Cold weather? Bah. In the NFL Bud Grant used it to his advantage against wimpy opponents. The tough thrive there. I’d guess Donaldson qualifies as tough.
Jim Bernstein
You did not report a single “fact”, just your opinion.. You are entitled to them but please, do not report your opinions as “facts”!
martras
Overnight lows typically happen around 6am or before the sun comes back up.
On average, night game time temperatures would be expected to be similar to mid/late April. Game start, upper 50s. Game end, upper 40s. Of course, even 40* is “cold” sitting at a baseball game.
That said, my experience suggests Target Field wouldn’t likely “feel” much colder than Coors Field or even Oracle Park.
StandUpGuy
Jim Bernstien, Finlander, eph, Twinsfan368:
When JD signs with either the Braves or Nats it will be a fact. It is a fact now but you just don’t know it. Don’t tell me I’m reporting opinions when I’m reporting facts. Just because I know the facts before you do doesn’t mean they aren’t facts.
When I said, “the Nats have money to spend for days” compaired to the Twins, I should have said the Nats WILL spend money for days compared to the Twins. The Twins owner is cheap because he would rather make sure his great great great grandkids don’t have to work for the rest of their lives than pay Josh Donaldson. I can’t argue with him. I love Josh Donaldson and I have no grandkids but I still love my great great great great grandkids more than Josh Donaldson.
If anyone wants to bet any kind of wager that Josh Donaldson doesn’t sign with the Braves or Nats then let me know. Otherwise… STFU and stop telling me facts are my opinions.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Minnesota winters are brutal. If you dont might downpour showers for 10 mins Then clean as day the rest of the day. I’d go in late spring May-July is a perfect time
Finlander
Thank goodness MLB baseball games aren’t played in the winter.
A player’s team home doesn’t have to be his year round residence. It also might be tough to find a current Twins player that doesn’t enjoy the area and that ballpark. Admittedly the previous park, the Metrodome, was a bit strange. But they managed 2 championships in it.
lowtalker1
No they don’t. San Diego, Milwaukee, Indians and later on devil rays deserve it more.
lowtalker1
Seattle can eat one
Kdag23
Maybe you missed it, but it’s no longer Devil Ray’s- it’s just Ray’s now. And to your point, are you saying that Tampa fans – all 2,000 of them that actually go to games, deserve a WS more than MN fans?
iamhector24
The rays fans are AWFUL. They never show up. There’s no way they deserve anything except their team moving to Montreal.
kershawsgrandma22
That does not make them better than the Yankees
snotrocket
None of the teams that beat the Dodgers every year are better than the Dodgers on paper, and yet, they still beat the Dodgers.
Eatdust666
Well, that’s because the Dodgers, despite being oh so good in the regular season have had a track record of choking in October.
TheTrotsky
I think that was his point buddy.
Eatdust666
Okay
DM
I doubt bringing in Donaldson is going to bring a world series to the twin cities. When he was with Toronto he was known as moody and not a very nice person in the dugout. If you can hit some team’s don’t care what kind of person you are.
twinsfan368
Seemed fine in ATL
cman
They will not sign any of the three. NOBODY wants to play in Minnesota period. Who wants to move there, NOBODY? Who wants to live in the upper midwest out in the middle of nowhere, isolated in the Twin Cities when you can live on the coasts and enjoy good weather, night life, culture, etc. ANSWER NOBODY. Plus Twins ownership is cheap.
twinsfan368
Bro nothing you just fricken said is true. There is plenty of people that want to come here to visit the twins cities. We have the mall of America and we are the state of hockey so idk what u are talking about. Go live in Maine bud
DM
A lot of people want to live there. Last I checked there were over four million people living in the twin cities. Not NY or LA but it’s not BF Egypt either. Minnesota also has over 15000 lakes, for people that like that kind of stuff.
chippahawk
please tell me the c in your name stands for clueless because it would make total sense.
twinsfan368
Please go get em but don’t overpay too much. We are going to have to overpay no matter what but it would be great if he came to minny
RunDMC
Raw dollar? How so? Aren’t they looking to defer most or are they counting on MASN settlement funds? Nothing bad ever comes from spending money you don’t have.
seamaholic 2
Umm … they paid Rendon almost $30m last year. And Zimmerman’s contract is (finally) over too. And they rolled in cash from the playoffs. And they have the richest owners in sports.
They can pay Donaldson any amount they want. If they want him badly enough (I have my doubts).
Nationals17
The Nationals could easily pay Donaldson. They are about $31 million under the luxury tax amount and they have not shown interest in going over by much in the past. With that $31 million they need a third basemen, first basement, possibly 2 quality bullpen arms.
Just to touch on a couple of other things you said….The Lerners are among the richest owner in baseball, but nowhere near the richest in all of sports. Also Rendon’s salary last year was $18.8 million.
MoRivera 1999
Hard to get a 3B, 1B and 2RP for $31MM if JD is going to cost $25MM or more alone…
Nationals17
I know. $31 million doesn’t stretch that far if spending most of it on JD. The Strasburg contract limited their options.
My guess is no one is offering JD what he wants or he would have signed by now. If he wants 4 years I can’t see him getting $25 million a year.
DM
Yeah 31 million doesn’t go as far as it used to. That used to pay my bills for a lifetime. Now, oh it still would, with a whole lot left over. How did these prices get this high?
RunDMC
Randy Lerner is the richest in sports? He’s not even the richest in the NL East…John C. Malone of Liberty is worth more than 7x Mr. Lerner.
RunDMC
Sorry, Ted Lerner…Malone still has him beat by 2B, depending on when you’re looking.
802Ghost
The Nationals don’t have the richest owner in sports. One of them, but not the richest.
MoRivera 1999
twinsfan368 was talking about the twins when he said “go get em”, not the Nats. And the Nats can easily afford him.
heiniemanush
Nats, braves, minn. and texas all desperate for a good 3B. With just Donaldson available, talk goes to K. seager in a trade but no one suggests Longoria ?
Costs the same as seager, power numbers similar and the SFG looking to shed salary and get younger. What am I missing?
Appalachian_Outlaw
That Longoria is declining, and not cheaply either.
Sky14
Minny is not desperate for a 3rd baseman. They have Sano, but want to flip him to the other side of the diamond if a quality replacement can be had. Longoria is not that.
SalaryCapMyth
Texas is out on Donaldson. It was posted on MLBTR. Look at TEAMS and then select Rangers and you’ll see the article.
VonPurpleHayes
As a Phillies fan, please keep this talented fellow away from the Braves and Nats.
Appalachian_Outlaw
As a Braves fan, don’t listen to him. You’d much rather have Franco. Trust me. Let Atlanta sign Donaldson.
RunDMC
Agreed…this is the year Franco puts it altogether. Clearly, the better bet for PHI on not going that 4th year for Donaldson. That would be stupid to pay that much.
megaj
4 NL East teams that all hope to compete for the division need a 3B. Even if Bryant is overrated, you are going to see one of those teams give the Cubs what they want. Braves would lose Fried and prospects, Mets would lose Thor and prospect, Nationals would lose Robles and prospect. Phillies probably don’t have enough to offer, but Harper, Hoskins, Realmuto, and Bryant would have been very powerful lineup.
chippahawk
Braves arent getting rid of one of their top starters for a position player and Robles isn’t going anywhere.
Pacman
Fried is so overrated….and will be an afterthought if that is what it takes to get Bryant. Don’t let high run support that contributed to those 17 wins fool you. Sell while the value is high…..
chippahawk
Meh, I watch almost every game and can tell who the second best pitcher on the staff was last year thanks. You don’t start peeling away the layers of an already questionable staff even with Hamels added, they still only have a staff built to win another division title and be bounced shortly after.
Can’t wait until trade deadline to try and strike gold, that was already a failed experiment with keuchel, need to start the season with another ace/co-ace to get to know the team and pitching coach.
Newk isnt the answer and folty is as inconsistent from start to start as they come.
rct
I don’t know how many times it needs to be said, but the Mets are not trading Syndergaard. BVW has said it a million times, and he means it. If they were completely blown away by an offer they might, but since no one is going to do that, he’s not going anywhere. He had a down year last year (mostly because him and Ramos are not a good pairing) and you don’t sell low on something like that.
megaj
Mets fan?
Munkes2
Nats don’t have any prospects to get Bryant,,, they’ll go all in on Donaldson..
Braves have Ian Anderson, waters, Riley, wright , fried …could put a package together..
Phillies got Spencer Howard, alec Bohm, Kingery, moniak …could make a package…
Mets have Thor,, and won’t move him when they have jd davis to play 3rd or Jeff McNeil
Twins tho,,, sano- Royce Lewis .. But doubt cubs move Bryant and don’t get any young arms ,, tho Royce in CF would look nice…
Im guessing nats over pay Donaldson, braves over pay for bryant
Jrmomo1000
Todd Frazier for a 1 or 2 year deal then Keuchel a bullpen arm. For the twins
kershawsgrandma22
The Dodgers should trade away all their star prospects rather than just spending money and getting Donaldson…
grapher0315
Seems like a good time for a team to offer a 3 year contract with a 4th year vesting option.
throwinched10
What’s the plan here?
Does Sano move to 1b? Is Rooker still in the future plans? Do Larnach and Kirilloff both have a future in the Twins OF? I had heard that Kirilloff may move to 1b.
Kdag23
Never happen if they have to outbid someone.
nentwigs
Twinkies will never sign Donaldson. They will posture as being legitimate in their pursuit but in reality Mr. Pohlad (son of Mr. CHEAP) , will just not pony up the cash. The Pohlad family is in this sports game for one reason and one reason only. To make BUCKS. They previously made their fortune off the residents of the Twin Cities through: transit, banking and bottling. In baseball, winning is too expensive because then all the players involved will want raises. Better to be close, come up short and reap all the profits from the blind fans who foolishly believe that the Twins have a chance.
The reality is:
IF Sano moves to first, you’ll see either: Matt Duffy, Travis Shaw or Brock Holt at 3B.
IF Sano stays at third, It’ll be: CJ Cron, Logan Morrison or Matt Adams at 1B
That way ownership/management can cry to the fans about how hard they tried to land a top free agent, while laughing all the way to the bank.
Ddubbl
Nailed it!!!
nentwigs
IF Sano moves to first, you’ll possibly see Luis Arraez at 3B creating an opening at 2B.
Also possible Free Agent for 3B = : Edwin Nunez,
That 2nd base opening could go to: Nick Gordon, Jonathan Schoop, Brock Holt, Scooter Gennett, Edwin Nunez, Jason Kipnis, Yangervis Solarte, Starlin Castro, Brad Miller, even Brian Dozier….
TradeAcuna
Yes Twins, go grab Donaldson and waste your money on him. Stay away from Bumgarner.
MafiaBass
I’m confused… Don’t the twins have a third baseman that’s pretty good?
1738hotlinebling
2 years / 40 mil$ , then go trade for Gray and sign Ryu
fletch
That is great but the Twins need some pitching. Did the front office clowns watch the playoffs last year?
brucenewton
What about Sano? Twins need a couple good starting pitchers desperately.
Eatdust666
They’d move him to first base.
justsomeguy
The Twins are most likely testing the market, but will most likely end up settling with in house 3rd base options. Sano is a liability at 3rd base and with the Twins non-tendering Cron with his injury, they can afford to move Sano to 1st now. They’ve got Marwin, Adrianza, Avila, and possibly Cruz as MLB first base options right now, but it would be really nice and lethal to move Sano to first, have an above average defender with Donaldson at 3rd. And have the option to spell Donaldson with a combination of Marwin, Sano, or Austillo even (if he cracks the roster). I wouldn’t mind keeping Sano at 3rd though and picking up like a Justin Smoak at 1st. I wish we would take a look at Aaron Sanchez. He’s going to have a shoulder surgery, but he’s young and we could get him on a team friendly contract, kinda like what we did with Pineda. Alex Wood wouldn’t be too bad either. Maybe Taijuan Walker is healthy, but who knows?
CaptainHooks
The Twins Front Office needs to focus on signing Hyun-Jin Ryu and Dallas Keuchel to shore up their rotation. The Twins can always bring back Eduardo Nunez or C.J. Cron, if they want another option at corner infielder. Focus on the pitching rotation if you want to contend in 2020.
Kipp35
Sorry, but they are not interested in contending in 2020.They made it perfectly clear that they are (for what ever reason) assured a WS title in 2024! That’s why ALL of their prospects are off limits!
Just look at what happened with MadBaum. He signed for 5yr/$85m, they claimed to be in for 5yr/$100m. I notified the Twins after last season I was done with season tickets (not that it’s any big deal to them, but it was for me). It was evident at the deadline what direction they want the team to go.
EasternLeagueVeteran
Twins sign Ryu and/or Keuchel or Bumgarner, and get Todd Frazier to play third. Twins have the offense enough already, and can use a steady glove and a decent bat and a great clubhouse veteran presence. Get the starting pitching!
Kipp35
PLEASE don’t expect the Twins to bring anyone of worth to this club this year, or any other. They made it 100% clear at the trade deadline last season, they have no interest in bettering this team beyond their five year plan and using only their farm system. They could have made several deals last season. But, for whatever reason, they believe they are assured they will land a WS title in 2024; we don’t even need to play the season! Congratulations 2024 World Series Champions, Minnesota Twins!
We had more wins than any point in our franchise history, more homeruns than any team has ever hit in a season, a club that wanted to win; we just needed pitching…. we trade for a guy that was injured before he got off the plane and may NEVER play baseball again and then for a serviceable pitcher that doesn’t want to re-sign with the team (rental???). Way to go all out boys!
Wheeler: “we offered 5/$100 but he wanted to play out east… We’ll focus on MadBaum!”
MadBaum: “signed for 5/$85 with ARZ” ???Where was the last deal???
Twins: “we’re interested in Keuchel, or maybe Donaldson, or maybe Ryu or maybe… never mind, we’ll bring back future hall of famer, Caleb Thielbar, Pineda (who can over eat his way back into a suspension) and we’ll overpaid to bring back Odorrizi [although that at least was a decent decision].
DO SOMETHING THAT WILL MAKE THE FANS WANT TO SUPPORT YOU! This offseason shows you’re giving up before the season starts. Maybe Frank Viola will make a comeback for you. Although, I bet you would still lose the sweepstakes for him!
Ddubbl
Hurry up already…snooze ya LOSE!!!
