The Reds have agreed to a deal with veteran reliever David Carpenter, according to the social media accounts of Cincinnati pitching coordinator Kyle Boddy and Carpenter himself. It’s a minors deal with an invite to MLB camp.
Carpenter didn’t exactly regain his former glory last year with the Rangers. But he did make it up for four MLB appearances — his first since way back in 2015. And Carpenter spun 38 2/3 innings of 1.63 ERA ball with 9.8 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9 at Triple-A.
It seems the righty has been back at work at the Boddy-founded Driveline Baseball this winter. (Here’s a video link on Twitter if you’d like to look for yourself.) We’ll see whether he can crack the Reds roster in camp, but moving back towards his once-customary 96 mph heat would surely help.

MLB Fanatic – apparently you’re a Cards fan if you’re excited that the Reds acquired Matt Carpenter …

Well that’s not as bad as me doing a victory lap around my house when I saw the “Braves sign Cole Hamels” notification, thinking it said Garret Cole.

I thought it was Karen carpenter and I started singing “we’ve only just begun. . .”

Playing on the fringes. We need a big move. Come in we are living in the now.

Robb5215: Who do you consider a big splash at this point? (Seriously asking, not criticism)

Lindor, Bumgardner, etc

Bum is off the board. Personally, I’d like to see Dickerson sign on. That offense of his is better than any other hitter available on the FA market.
titanic struggle
I agree…ink him today!

Has there been any word from MLB about how potential tampering is being tracked in the case of Boddy and his ongoing involvement in Driveline Baseball and any other team personnel’s ties to such facilities?
I envision someone with similar ties and a superstar client influence that player’s choice of free agency destinations some day soon.

Mr Boddy? From Clue. That was Lee Ving, dude.

Low risk, high reward sign. I like it. Could end up being a great sign, and if not, oh well.

I like moves like this. Depth and a live arm that Johnson and the analytics crew can work with. I’m always encouraged when we sign pitchers that have had any decent showings in the past. This isn’t the same Reds front office from years past. These guys are on it.
titanic struggle
They are…and I love it…
DarkSide830
given an extended look this guy can be of real use to a team.

If he put up those numbers in AAA that means if he is healthy he is effective. Wonder how many innings you could expect from a guy that’s been out that long without pitching though. Usually takes a full year to build up stamina. But either way… here’s to hoping he stays healthy.
Jock2854
Low cost w possible high reward, has fastball & hopefully they can add a pitch or two to his arsenal of pitches
MafiaBass
My sister went to high school with him. They were fellow trumpeters in marching band.
