The Reds have outrighted right-hander R.J. Alaniz after he cleared waivers, per a club announcement. That leaves a pair of 40-man openings to work with during this week’s Winter Meetings,
Alaniz, claimed off waivers in May, made his first dozen MLB appearances in 2019. He gave up more earned runs (16) than innings pitched (15 2/3), so obviously has some proving left to do before he’s given his next opportunity.
Unsurprisingly, Alaniz showed better during his time in the upper minors. He maintained 12.0 K/9 and 4.0 BB/9 over 40 1/3 Triple-A frames during the ’19 campaign. Alaniz carries a 3.79 ERA over 128 1/3 lifetime innings at the highest level of the minors.
First the Strasburg news and now this.
Winter Meetings are lit!
Strasburg who?
R.J. Alaniz has cleared waivers!?!?!
Hahaha!!
Rubens taste good, but evidently arent great baseball players.
So no $245 million contract for him? Darn…
Reds clearing roster space for free agent LF Marcell Ozuna, SS Didi Gregorius or a starting pitcher?
No didi he is done
Not crazy about the underachieving Ozuna or the defensive liability Castellanos. I’d prefer they fill that outfield need with a trade. Go get Mookie for Lodolo, Winker, Santillian and 10 mill of his salary. Move Senzel to LF. If you’re goin for it, go big or stay home.
I’m not a Reds fan or endorsing these moves. I’m simply suggesting possibilities that have already been mentioned in rumors by MLB pundits and do make some measure of sense on paper.
Additionally, I am a White Sox fan and would love to see the Reds sign Marcell Ozuna which would extinguish those rumors emanating from the Dominican Republic suggesting he will be the new ChiSox RF. I don’t want to see an underperforming puss arm in RF for my White Sox. If they have to settle on an underperforming FA talent to play RF I’d just assume they roll the dice on former Red Yasiel Puig who could be a nice fit alongside the other 4 Cuban White Sox starters in 2020. Puig may be a mental midget but at least he is a natural RF with a strong arm. I’m thinking Jose Abreu and Yasmani Grandal could keep him in check and that Puig might finally realize his enormous potential on Chicago’s southside. If not, they can try throwing their Manny Machado FA dollars at RF Mookie Betts next offseason.
I have to say, that is one of the most well thought out posts I’ve read in a long time. I’m a Reds fan that wants no part of the underachieving Ozuna, and I described him the very same way an hour or so ago. Puig played 110% and with fire on every play in Cincy and I can’t imagine why they wouldn’t offer him a deal to come back. Yes, he didn’t hit well for the first month and a half of the season, but the entire team stunk it up. The potential is there and he became a HUGE fan favorite while he was here…I for one would LOVE his return!
Totally agree!!!!
Puig in RF, Aquino in LF? That would be cool to see.
Jury is out on Aquino after September…bring in Puig 3 for 24…he loved the Nati!
Hi Titanic. IMO Mookie would be a great get but as I am sure you know he is a one year rental I am not sure what the point would be to go big for one year with no real promise of getting more than just into the playoffs. We would lose him and Bower after the season and deplete our farm system. Anyway shaping up to be a fun off season.
I know what you’re saying, and I get that, it could set the organization back 3-5 years. But the sad fact is we can’t toss around 200+ mill contracts to add to an already stacked team, and rather be set back 3-5 years than 7-8. Bus Selig harmed this game deeply as commissioner. He vaunted the fact that a few teams with lower payrolls made the playoffs and actually won a few WS. We all know there is a competitive imbalance in this game, which means the window is only halfway open for smaller markets. Go big while you have the chance, or stay home…aka, tank…
Imagine…Votto, Betts, Puig, Aquino, Suarez, Moose, Senzel, a catcher to be named later, and one of a damn good staff of pitchers…
Imagine…Votto, Betts, Puig, Aquino, Suarez, Moose, Senzel, a catcher to be named later, and one of a damn good staff of pitchers and not necessarily in that order…
Wow. You must write for MLB.com… I read this there last week.
Wrong, they suggested a lower ML pitcher than Santillian…but I loved the idea…
And read below that I didn’t take credit…
Or for a rule 5
A stunning turn of events…
They’re clearing a 40 man roster spot for a pending FA signing or the Les likely possiblity of a Rule 5 Draft player.
Nothing more to it than that.
Hopefully making room for a LHR & a center fielder!!
We are flush with outfielders. Senzel, Aquino, Winker, Ervin, VanMeter, Siri, etc… IMO only place to put Senzel now is the outfield. Aquino should be given every opportunity to start and see if he is a full time player given the power we have seen. Ervin I think has shown he deserves a chance at full time outfield. VanMeter can play outfield and backup infielder. Winker is sold hitter for the most part. Siri and rest show some kind of promise as full time or back up. If we go out and get a centerfielder on the free agent market sounds like many more trades on the way. Offseason should be crazy for our Reds.
And here’s the truth, which I read today and will not take credit for. None of those outfielders are Mookie Betts, or even close. He’s the Fransisco Lindor that isn’t available. The Reds acquiring him would be the biggest go for it in the history of the game. Push your chips in Reds…
