The Rangers are showing interest in veteran infielder Todd Frazier, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. It seems the team would be amenable to a single-season pact; the potential price tag isn’t known.
Frazier, 34 in February, has generally turned in above-average hitting and solid glovework at the hot corner. His power has taken a step back from his All-Star caliber days, but Frazier is still a solid veteran performer. Last year, he slashed .251/.329/.443 and popped 21 long balls in 499 plate appearances with the Mets.
While the Rangers still have their eyes on a bigger prize at third base — after missing on Anthony Rendon, they’re making a long-odds play for Nolan Arenado — it seems they could pursue Frazier regardless. Per Grant, Frazier would move into action at first base in the event of another addition at third. He’d pair with (and at least partially displace) Ronald Guzman at first while presumably also seeing action at third, as a DH, and as a pinch-hitter.
It’s a sensible match on paper, though it’s not clear how likely it is to come to fruition. Frazier will presumably also be targeted by some other clubs that have designs on higher-end options at third base. Depending upon where Josh Donaldson signs and how the trade market develops over the coming weeks — the true availability of Arenado and Kris Bryant will weigh heavily — it’s possible that Frazier will end up in some demand before camp opens. There are a number of other notable veteran options still on the market, though arguably none as desirable as Frazier.

From Rendon to Donaldson to Arenado to Frazier. Fans should be livid. (Did they ever kick the tires on Bryant?)
Strike Four
Came to post haha damn, Rangers FO and owners really are weaklings.
thatdudetg
I guess you didn’t actually read the part that said “While the Rangers still have their eyes on a bigger prize at third base…”
But it’s cool. It’s the last day of 2019, you’re allowed to be lazy and post ignorant comments.
Begamin
I didnt know MLBTR speaks for the front office of the Rangers. If theyre showing interest in Frazier theyre possibly signaling that, no, they dont really have their eye on a bigger prize at third base.
Its still possible that they grab a better 3B than Frazier, sure, but not because MLBTR said they are still looking at better options. That part of the article comes off as more of an assumption of what the Rangers’ FO is doing than absolute fact, considering there are no quotes or links to other articles that provide evidence to such a claim.
Get off your high horse
Dbird777
Per Grant, Frazier would move into action at first base in the event of another addition at third.
Always helps to read before commenting.
Begamin
I mean, i read through this entire article. How was i supposed to assume that the Grant article linked here was anything more than just a report saying that the Rangers have interest in a cheap one year deal with Frazier?
802Ghost
Bc you click on it and read it.
Begamin
+vtncsc
No you dont?
Why would i when I was busy reading the article i wanted to read? I didnt know i HAD to read the other article when the other article was summarized in the first paragraph. Thats why it was summarized in the first place
Nips
Are you trolling? It literally says in this article that you claim to have read entirely, exactly what Dbird wrote. There’s no assuming needed, or clicking of other links involved.
DaMetsrising73
Frazier to rangers 4 yrs 60 million.
Begamin
+Nips
No, not trolling. Duh, it was in the article. What i was saying was: how was the reader supposed to assume that the “While the Rangers still have eyes on a bigger prize at third base” was from the Grant article and not just an assumption on the part of MLBTR? The quote in question was one or two paragraphs removed from the original mention/summarization of the Grant article, with original work from Jeff Todd in between. I was also saying there should be no requirement/expectation from the reader to have read the linked Grant article, since it was summarized in the first paragraph.
I have read this article in full about 2-3 times (its not very long so that really shouldnt be impressive) but i have not read the Grant article. If the fact that the Rangers do have eyes on another 3B outside Frazier is true and it was indeed stated in the Grant article with proof that it is true, then I guess anyone who assumes that the Rangers are simply aiming to settle for Frazier is a bit at fault, but its not hard to see how someone can come to conclusion.
TL:DR, im just providing reasonings for why its not really hard to see where Mo4ever was coming from and why it was a bit uncalled for for thatdudetg to come off as he did.
southbeachbully
@Begamin
Or..OR….the Ranger know how to walk and chew gum at the same time. Likely, they’ve submitted an offer to someone, free agent or not, and in case it falls thru they are checking the list for the alternative plans? This a rumor site. It’s part factual and speculative.
I don’t see anything wrong with what @thatdudetg said.
Natergater77
Could they be trying to fill both their need for 1st and 3rd in different moves.
You’re right Grant isn’t the front office, but I’ll take a teams reporters speculation over that of a “reader/commentor” of MLBTR
MoRivera 1999
They wouldn’t be looking at Frazier at all if he weren’t becoming a significant possibility. If they were determined to land a bigger fish, that’s where their focus would remain. IMO.
stan lee the manly
Every single team checks in on more than one free agent that plays the positions they are targeting and sets up multiple backup options of their primary goal doesn’t work out. In no way shape or form does this news mean the Rangers won’t make a move for a better third baseman. The Bryant grievance isn’t even decided yet.

Your bar for being livid is dangerously low.

Im sure he was just exaggerating to emphasize a point. You know, hyperboles n what not
knolln
holy cow calm down. it could be to lesser half platoon guzman at first with arenado at 3rd and castellanos in RF. but GET OUT YOUR pitchfork. or just troll harder
eyesaiah
not a bad idea for a one year deal. Rangers clearly don’t have a 3B in mind so better to reassess next offseason
cobbalicious
They had plenty in mind and there are many names available now who are better than Frazier. Rangers are a joke.
Dogbone
I’m not sure about the Rangers, but thinking Frazier is any solution, is a big joke. He was washed up and creaky while still playing for the White Sox. He moved on defense like an old man with no agility. And I doubt his offensive numbers are going to get any better.
Rangers better start looking at getting their 3B solution via trade.
cobbalicious
Agreed, Bryant could be a viable option and will cost less value in a trade.
bradthebluefish
Frazier’s 2.2 WAR last season suggests otherwise.
crumpy24
They can alway just put Frazier at 1B and sign/trade for a star 3B. I’m taking just about anyone over Guzman. Guzman still has a minor league option I believe.
1738hotlinebling
Seems like a good fit
msqboxer
One year deal with maybe a team option in the $4-5MM range for a 2WAR player.
solaris602
I have to agree with that possibility. He’s an asset, but not a solution, so lock him up on a deal like that as a hedge against coming up empty completely in the 3B sweepstakes. And if they do land a high end 3B, use him at 1B or off the bench.
Gmen777
He’s definitely no Anthony Rendon….
thatdudetg
Amazed by how many ignorant comments are being posted here.
Yes, he’s not Rendon, or Donaldson, or Arenado, or Bryant.
But he’s also an improvement from what Texas has last offseason.

MoRivera 1999
But they were supposed to be making a big statement for the opening of the new park. 3B was the focus of that statement. Frazier is not that statement. So far no sign that any statement is going to be made. Fans should care. First (above) you were arguing that they are still going after the big names. Now you are just capitulating…
Daniel Youngblood
They did just trade for Korey Kluber and rebuild their entire rotation on the fly.
Splashy signings end in disaster as often as not. Spreading out your money to address multiple weaknesses makes the team better in the long run.
MoRivera 1999
Kluber is a mighty iffy statement by all accounts.
Daniel Youngblood
And he won’t come on a contract that will potentially cripple the organization.
Three of the Rangers’ top 10 prospects are fast-rising third basemen — college draftees Josh Jung (No. 1) and Davis Wendzel (No. 9) and 2018 trade acquisition Sherten Apostel (No. 10). Breaking the bank on third base makes little sense when you’ve got equal uncertainty at catcher and center field and fewer potential solutions internally.
stubby66
Well they obviously have a plan and arent willing to go past certain lines in signings and trades. Nothing wrong with that. Keeps them out of bigger holes like they did with resigning Hamilton or keeping Hamels.
8ManLineupNoPitcherNoDH
“Rangers throwing in the towel” could also have been the headline
Bledcam
90% of posters seem to be skipping the part where it’s stated he could be a platoon option at 1B because Texas is still looking at Arenado/Bryant. This is hardly Texas conceding on 3B.
Melchez
Is Guzman really the 1B for a team looking to contend? His minor league numbers are video game-ish. But, it hasn’t translated to the majors.
DarrenDreifortsContract
The owners should stop being so cheap and spend some money to sign Vinny Castilla.
krillin89
I miss Vinny
WideWorldofSports
I would say Castilla and Rolen would be effective choices
goblue5
This should be a pirate deal waiting to happen. Clearly don’t think Moran can do it and waiting for Hayes to mature, so why not a solid defensive 3B???? Makes too much sense so the Bucs won’t do it.
dudeman40
Called playin’ with the big boys!!
Promises, promises, promises – what a splash this would be to open the new ballpark!
Thronson5
What’s the hold up with Donaldson? Really odd that we haven’t heard anything yet about that.
Daniel Youngblood
He’s 34 years old and wants four years. That contract is going to be a disaster or whatever team gives it to him.
angt222
Cheaper 3B option.. Could see MIN going this route too
eddiemathews
Brewers too
whyhayzee
Wait, this is the Frazier who actually played baseball in New York, not the putrid stink bug outfielder who is always being imaginary traded for superstars.
WideWorldofSports
I think you’re thinking of Joe Frazier
MikeyHammer
No, you’re thinking of Frasier W. Crane, pompous intellect.
MoRivera 1999
Another misplaced attack by the most obsessed Red Sox fan who simply cannot think about hardly anything but the Yankees. Doesn’t matter if it’s a Yankees article or not, he is going grab the tangent or fabricate a tangent and drag the Yankees into it for a good, swift kick. Just like his daddy taught him when he was 11. He’s always remained loyal to his daddy. And his daddy sure hated the Yankees.
whyhayzee
Actually, my father couldn’t care less about the yankees baseball team. He was more concerned with defeating the Japanese in World War 2. His dad however, brought him to a baseball game to see Babe Ruth. He described him as comically fat with little spindly legs. But he was great, I’m sure.
MoRivera 1999
Just the greatest ever by most accounts, at least until Mike Trout, perhaps. Guess your grandpa was not much of a judge of baseball talent. Some Red Sox fan like him traded Babe Ruth away and the rest is history. btw, my dad was in WWII also but I don’t wear it like a personal badge of honor… After all, so did pretty much everyone else in that generation… Keep it in perspective.
Roll
im assuming he is referring to clint frazier to be funny but was just sad and pathetic attempt, the funny thing is this frazier also played in new york and also played outfield in his past and also was offered deals for all stars back in the day as well.
whyhayzee
Clint Frazier is the Blake Swihart of the yankees.
MoRivera 1999
Will you eat your hat when that claim about Frazier proves to be wrong? Frazier had a better couple of months last year before he got injured than Swihart has ever had. Love these casual proclamations we get here in MLBTR. Totally unaccountable trash talking.
dynamite drop in monty
Our prospect busts are better than yours!! Eat your hats, boys!
I love you, Mo.

Todd Frazier has been the most overrated player in the game over the last 10 years.
John Kappel
Albert Pujols is on the phone for you…..
its_happening
Easy there. Pujols is heading to Cooperstown on ballot #1. He just got old. Very fast.
eddiemathews
Or…he got old at the usual rate, but we didn’t know his real age.
AngelDiceClay
I think you have over rated with over paid.
AngelDiceClay
i meant you have overrated confused with overpaid.
dynamite drop in monty
I just ordered two dozen wings. Help yourselves.

dynamite drop in monty
Sorry. You must go now.

Todd had a solid come back year, did well both offensively and defensively. Good clubhouse presence. Could see up tick in home runs in Texas.
rangers92
Let’s just grab Frazier 3B, Pillar for CF, Chirinos for C, and Eric Thames for 1B
carlos15
Good, Frazier needs to take his clown show someplace else.
SupremeZeus
Baseball needs Frazier on the Nationals. He and bff Eaton getting the band back together. Ahhh.
InkysOliveGarden
Why so much Ranger hate? This aint over yet.
bjhaas1977
Fraizer is a great bench and clubhouse guy . Good addition if they grab him.
throwinched10
They probably have the money for either Frazier and Castellanos or just Donaldson. They could sign Frazier and Castellanos and then move Solak to 2b and bench Odor. Or they could cut Odor.
pappyvw
Why
astros_fan_84
So much hate. I think Frazier on a one year deal is a good signing. The Rangers have multiple holes, and they’ve done a great job filling them.
I’ve been pretty critical of Jon Daniels in recent years, but he’s having a great offseason.
Texassooner
I don’t see the downside to a one year Frazier deal nor do I think it rules any 3B trade out.
rangers92
I wouldn’t mind Frazier @ 3B as long as we fill the other spots like Catcher and 1B
Chirinos would be a good pick up for C
Maybe a trade for a guy who crushes lefties to play at 1B to platoon with Guzman..
Like Renato Nunez from the Orioles or Brandon Dixon from the Orioles
They can both play 3B in a pinch too Incase Frazier gets injured or doesn’t hit worth a crap.. at that point they could put someone like Heineman in Center and let Santana play 1B vs lefties
rangers92
Brandon Dixon-Tigers*
User 1104686089
Im fine withh it too. If the asking price on Arenado or bryant is to high, than sign Frazier. But they have to get a serious righthanded bat somewhere else. Maybe sign Frasier and go trade for Starling Marte, or sign Castellanos.
bravesfan
Go from possibly going after JD to Frazier. That’s like going to search for gold, giving up before it’s half way over, then settling on actual crap….
jmag1976
one thing is he’s consistent. he’s a great clubhouse guy too. whomever signs him gets a class act.
happy new year folks
Perksy
Todd Frazier reminds me of a younger Chris Mullin
