Even after re-signing Adam Wainwright earlier this offseason, the Cardinals are keeping an eye on the free-agent market for starting pitchers, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch explains. The team has “had conversations” regarding left-handers Madison Bumgarner, Wade Miley, and Dallas Keuchel, according to Goold, who adds that St. Louis prefers to have right-hander Carlos Martinez return to a starting role after spending all of 2019 as a reliever. If that happens, the Cardinals may have a full complement of starters with Wainwright, Martinez, Jack Flaherty, Dakota Hudson and Miles Mikolas. For now, Martinez is recovering nicely from the right shoulder procedure he underwent in October.
Here’s more from the National League….
- This has been an aggressive offseason for the Padres, who have signed or traded for Drew Pomeranz, Jurickson Profar, Trent Grisham and Tommy Pham over the past few weeks. The club’s not done yet, though, as it continues trying to find ways to break its long-running playoff drought next season. General manager A.J. Preller said (via AJ Cassavell of MLB.com) that the team’s still “actively involved in conversations” and “looking to improve our roster” as next week’s Winter Meetings approach. Could that mean signing one of the top starting pitchers available? Not necessarily, as Cassavell writes that the Padres “seem determined not to overpay for the current options on the market.” However, Cassavell suggests the Padres won’t stand pat when it comes to their starting staff.
- The Marlins are seeking relievers who can do a better job limiting walks than their bullpen cast in 2019 did, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com relays. Miami’s relief corps finished the year with the second-highest walk rate in the game (4.37 per nine), and as president of baseball operations said, “you can’t defend a walk.” Frisaro names longtime Yankees reliever Dellin Betances as a potential target for the club in free agency, though it’s unclear whether that’s anything more than speculation. Betances was often dominant before missing almost all of last season with multiple injuries, but control hasn’t necessarily been his forte. The 31-year-old walked more than 6.5 batters per nine as recently as 2017.
- Stephen J. Nesbitt of The Athletic (subscription link) tackles the Pirates’ lack of spending in free agency, noting they’re last in the majors in that department since owner Bob Nutting took control in 2007. The Pirates have been loath to hand out multiyear contracts under Nutting, and while they have a new general manager in Ben Cherington, their lack of spending probably won’t change much. This is a new frontier for Cherington, whose previous GM gig came with the deep-pocketed Red Sox. But Cherington did fail on a couple big-money signings in Boston, as the Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval deals went down as regrettable for the club.

I get why the Cards want C-Mart in the rotation but what happens when his shoulder gives out again? Yea that’s right he’ll be in the pen again. Why not leave him in the pen as a long or mid reliever and sign a madbum or keuchel who will be a bit more durable for the rotation.
qbert1996
He’s getting paid like a starter and he had 3 straight seasons of 29 or more starts before the shoulder issues. He’s more valuable as a possible co-ace with Flaherty than he is in the pen.
coldbeer
A possible co-ace seems very optimistic.
STLCards33
Why? It’s very optimistic to assume he’s finally going to put his injuries behind him? His numbers say he’s an ace level pitcher when he’s healthy. So there’s no way you’re suggesting he isn’t
coldbeer
How many innings do you expect him to throw in 2020 after throwing 48 in all of 2019? I’d expect a co-ace to throw around 200ip. Not gonna happen therefore not a co-ace.
johnrealtime
At best he is Carlos Zambrano, a 2. I do agree with making him a starter again though, he’s far more valuable there and isn’t a top level reliever
cubsnomore
Bless you
Binnington50
For Carlos to be a co-ace, he would have to be an ace. Injuries aside, he needs to figure out what’s going on between his ears. Starter or reliever, he’s not reliable period.
fannclub6
Amen! Can’t count on him from game to game let alone over 30-32 starts. Probably unrealistic to think Waino can make all his starts too.
tigerd7335
Guys with a whip over 1.3 can’t be consider a co ace on any planet
CFAP
Martinez is closer to Peter Griffin than Jack Flaherty.
canocorn
Peetah!

Ah geez Lois!
iamhector24
Qbert why do fans make stuff up? “Paid like a starter”. Like closers don’t get paid? Your statement makes it seem like he’d be making QB money as a kicker. He’s not making “starter money”. He makes 11 mill. Wheeler just got 23. There are 6 closers making more than him. Chatwood and Britton aren’t closers and are making more. Familia is making like 17 cents less and he’s not a closer. Stop making stuff up.
SocraticGadfly
I’m a Cards fan, and, no, Carlos Martinez is not a co-ace. That bus has left the station a couple of years ago. Maybe it looked like he would be an ace when he first cracked the rotation? But, never fully panned out, and won’t any more. A decent No. 2, but no more. And, not the mentality of an “ace” either.
jkoms57
Shoulder issues usually end pitchers careers
excusemeflo
Are the Cardinals ever going to realize that Carlos Martinez just isn’t very good?
Megatron2005
No because they will value his talent over his mentality. Dude has the stuff to be great but just doesn’t care and the Cards would rather keep him.
raiders
Rick Ankiel and Dontrelle Willis had great stuff too…
User 4245925809
Some have the talent and little to no drive, some have the talent and exceptional drive. Consider john Lackey one who had exceptional drive, Martinez and Chris Archer come to mind quickly as pitchers of late with little to none.
jdgoat
Based on?
CFAP
Based on their low baseball IQ of how to pitch.
Eta34
CFAP appears to have very valuable insight. It’s shocking that he isn’t employed by any MLB front offices. With your talent, any team would become an automatic contender.
jkoms57
Lol one could argue that Chris Archer has tried tooo hard with the pirates.
If you actually watch archer, this guy is out there grinding, giving it his all…
he gets shook/lit up in pressure situations.. this is not a sign of someone giving up, but someone who puts too much pressure on themselves
iamhector24
It amazes me how many POC are called “lazy” by fans and then get mad when they point out how racist they are. I’m a Mets fan and deal with it all the time. David Wright “Warrior who tried so hard. It’s a shame he was injury prone.” Cespedes “I hate him, he’s so lazy. We never shoulda resigned him”. Every professional athlete has more drive than you have at your minimum wage butt cleaning job. Stfu.
Jonny5
It amazes me how someone automatically assumes someone is a racist because they refer to a player as lazy. It must suck being so “woke” that you see someone’s race first in every single aspect of your life.
STLCards33
Because this statement is just flat out false? He’s a head case but to say he’s not good is just delusional
tigerd7335
Relievers with a whip of 1.3 are not good by any means have to be under 1.0 to be considered “good” he is decent that’s all
coldbeer
It would be nice to see Reyes finally stay healthy.
dmarcus15
It would be nice to see Reyes in a different uniform.
CFAP
It would be nice if the Cardinals stopped holding on to prospects two years too long, and if they would stop paying aging, “sheeple favorites” inflated contracts.

Regarding the Pirates’ free agency spending…
If I told you that no matter how many lotto tickets you bought, you would NOT ever win the lottery…
Would you keep buying lotto tickets?
Without a cap and floor system, MLB is only slightly less fixed than WWE.

Well said. Nutting always likes to tout the Pirates history. Well, he’s right, the last time the Pirates won the World Series in 1979 is ancient history. Now their history is one of excuses, penny pinching, losing and false promises. Those are really attractive traits to lure free agents. And fans.
CFAP
Cards fans love to tout their 11 titles, even though 9 of them were over 37 years ago, and some even 75 years ago.
fmj
@CFAP What’s your point? STL is still one of the winningest franchises since the turn of the century. You just sound salty with no real content to your comment.
Jonny5
All he does is whine and cry about anything Cardinals related. I’ve never seen someone so bitter over a baseball team.
chicagofan1978
Have you heard of themed?
CFAP
All I do is comment about reality.
Gwynning
The turn of the century was 19 years ago. Don’t get me started on titles, at this point I just want one before I die. Cards fans are always fun to talk to at Petco.
Scott Kliesen
Pirates problems of late have less to do with spending on FA, and more to do with piss poor player development, and even worse asset management by front office.
By not developing Taillon, Meadows, Glasnow, and other highly talented players into stars for the Pirates is the biggest reason the team has performed poorly. Plus trading Cole for high floor, but low ceiling players, and trading three high ceiling players for Archer, cost NH his job. And cost the Pirates a window of contention.
Should the Pirates be more aggressive in FA? Most definitely, but only after they draft and develop a core group of players who can open a window of contention.
The Ghost of Bobby Bonilla
Agree with everything. I used to go to PNC, but like 10’s of thousands of fans, refuse to go anymore and put a cent in Nutting’s pockets.
Worst owner in sports. Who can’t use his pennies to build a competent organization. The City of Pittsburgh needs to force the issue with him and issue an eviction notice to him from that beautiful ballpark forcing him to actually sell the team to a semi-competent owner.
joew
Keep in mind, teams don’t make a lot of money in ticket/concessions. the real money comes from other sources. TV ratings are still up a good amount and they get a lot of money from that as well as other sources.
Scott Kliesen
I don’t subscribe to your position on Nutting. Yes, he could be a better Owner, but I have no illusions an ownership change will cause a change in how the organization is run, especially as it relates to payroll.
Biggest problem is this “divorce” mentality which is all too prevalent in Pittsburgh. For the Pirates to be successful, there has to be a partnership between fans and team. If you boycott the games at PNC, you’re not hurting Nutting, you’re hurting teams chances of improving.
bkbaxter826
Nutting is a terrible owner. I am amazed that he can run any business. It is not just a lack of willingness to spend, but that his prior management team was a disaster not only at player development, but also communications. As a Pirate fan living in Wisconsin I see the good job that the Brewers team does in talking to its fans. That has not been the case in Pittsburgh. When you blow smoke and talk crap for years do not blame the fans for being disaffected. ALL of that is on Nutting. As the owner the buck stops there.
tiredolddude
Agreed but when Nutting makes incredible profit without paying for personnel, does a cap really even matter? There’s a reason small market owners aren’t threatening to jump out the 13th floor window. They don’t want to spend with the big boys
Mendoza Line 215
Tired-They do not have the revenue to spend with the big boys.
It is incredible that an otherwise intelligent person like you will not admit that simple fact.
bigcheesegrilledontoast
Cards more likely to make a trade than signing any free agent of note. Very quiet on the rumor front. Almost too quiet.
Eightball611
How many times will AJ buy then sell because he not smart?
HubcapDiamondStarHalo
While the Padres have indeed been very active, it really seems like they’re going for a “quantity over quality” approach. Nobody they have picked up would be commonly considered a game-changer in 2020, and with their stated reluctance to pay the bigger names what the market is demanding, it just feels more like “change for the sake of change” as opposed to an all-out effort to contend.
spinach
Because concentrating spending gets you where you want to be? That $300m signing last offseason really moved the needle, eh? And the $150m signing the previous offseason? It’s baseball, you have to build a team..
Henry Silvestre
wow! reluctance to spend..wonder how the other teams going to sign anyone then SD Padres have outspend the entire MLB clubs over the last 2 offseasons to rank #1 in $$ spent on FA during that time committing over $550 million .. but yeah we ain’t spending ..
Padres2019ha
Ignorant comment hubcap. W The Padres, damned if you do, damned if you don’t. But you’re smarter than Preller it appears. Every player we’ve traded for is better than the ones we gave up, right now. Will Urias be better than Grisham?? Maybe but not rt now. Same w Lauer/Davies, Renfroe/Pham. Preller has made some really dumb contracts w Hosmer and Myers, yes. Machado will end up being a good, not great deal, but def worth the money.
Deleted.User
LIterally everyone is smarter than Preller. All he has to show for 5 years is Tatis and Paddack, who he just casually gave up control of their respective 2025 seasons for no reason.
And as far as the players they got back being better than the ones they gave up now, that certainly isn’t true on Urias/Grisham and you can make good case that it isn’t true on Lauer/Davies and Profar/Allen too.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Pirates ought to sign two guys who were just released by the Phillies: Maikel Franco (3B) and Cesar Hernandez (2B). Both should come fairly cheap, and both are better than anyone the Pirates will start at those positions.
Since Nutting always shops in Bargain Basements, these two fit the bill for him. Bucs should also take a shot on two starting pitchers who were not re-signed. Both had injury issues last year: Jimmy Nelson (MLW) and Taiwan Walker (AZ).
Mendoza Line 215
Lou-You make good points on all four.A one year ticket for Franco as a platoon with Moran until Hayes learns to hit and a trial with Hernandez if he learns to hustle all of the time out of the box could be good.
They also need to take some fliers on some free agent pitchers and the two that you mentioned would be good candidates.
swartnp7
I always picture the people who constantly complain about Nutting’s wallet as a group of Jerry’s from Rick & Morty.
We get it. He’s cheap. He doesn’t spend in FA. In other news, the sun is hot, rain is wet.
Move on to new arguments and quit wasting oxygen and keystrokes.
ForestCobraAL
Get rid of him and then it won’t be necessary.
Mendoza Line 215
Swart-You do not understand the preoccupation of yinzers with negativity.
They would find someone else to constantly complain about.
Nutting runs it like a business and does not understand that sometimes he needs to extend outside of it if the Pirates have a good team.
In any event there is no way that he can be forced to sell the team.
bkbaxter826
I have lived in a number of sports markets and there is always some negativity. Pittsburgh is no different except the owner is either tone deaf or an idiot. Sure renew a management team with expensive four year deals when the team is not doing well. What message do you think that sent to the fans. And then disastrous Archer trade and the failure to develop elite talent even when they were able to identify it. Nutting was incredibly slow to act and allowed the situation to spin out of control . NH and Hurdle should have been fired well before the end of the season if not before the season even opened. And then we had the craziest house cleaning imaginable. Fire the manager right before the last game of the season. but keep the GM even when the President leaves? We could discuss all the bad management gaffs for the last several years, but it just comes down to Nutting being a bad business man. Period. Lots of small market teams keep their fans engaged despite the economics, but Nutting has been totally clueless. I really hope the new team can turn that around!
Mendoza Line 215
I basically do not disagree with what you say as many people over the country tend to be negative minded.Your criticisms of Nuting are all basically justified except that he is a bad businessman as they go out of business. The signing of NH and Clint after two mediocre years to four year long contract extensions would never have been done by even the daffiest of owners, although some of them have done dumb things also.I think that it made both of them complacent which is the worst thing to be in a highly competitive field.
What riles me though is that the yinzers are incapable of spotting the good things that have been done and only harp on the bad.To have won 280 games over a three year period after twenty years of bad baseball was a wonderful thing. It shows me that these people had a talent at one time, and for that they do not deserve the extreme condemnations that they get.
steelerbravenation
Bucs need to move Bell & Marte in the offseason
Kela & Archer at the deadline
Sign a bunch of bounce back types they can move at the deadline & start a rebuild.
I believe Nutting hired the right guy for this rebuild
Cherington has a successful resume & he wants to be there
The one thing he got going for him is the Pirate ownership will not meddle like the Red Sox owners
I don’t believe the Pablo signing was his doing
tiredolddude
Since the once promising minor league system has no outfielders, catchers or pitchers on the immediate horizon, re-stocking makes sense. Trade those guys, take your lumps and stick to the plan this time
PghSportsfan66
Swaggerty, Oliva, Mitchell, Siani, L. Sanchez and O.Cruz (likely as he moves off SS) are all solid OF options to have. Certainly, there are no blue-chippers (outside of maybe Cruz or Swaggerty), but I wouldn’t say the minor league system has “no” outfielders. Reynolds also has < 1 year of service time.
talking baseball
The Pablo Sandoval signing was all about making David Ortiz happy !! If you look at a video from the 2014 All Star Game you will see Ortiz with his arm around Sandoval talking to him for quite a long time. When I saw that I knew he was going to Boston. When your elder countrymen speaks you listen.
bkbaxter826
Agreed. Given the lack of starting pitching at the MLB and minor league level they definitely need to tear it all down as they will not be competitive for several years given their refusal to sign significant FAs. As long as they can get actual talent in return everyone on the roster should be on the block for now. Look at what Houston did after a couple of terrible seasons. If you tell the fans that that is your plan and can explain it to them, then I am sure Pirate fans will still turn out as fans in other cities have done. The previous management team’s rhetoric that they were competing when everyone knew they were not was the real fan killer.
Mendoza Line 215
I disagree. The real fan killer is if they were absolutely awful like the Astros were for not two but four years.Do you really think that the Royals,Orioles,Marlins, and Tigers are going to the playoffs anytime soon?Do you think that there is a guarantee that any of them will win a WS and another pennant anytime soon?As bad as the Pirates were for twenty years, and they were much worse than they are now, they were never in the absolute trough that these teams have been in for two years and will be in for at least two more.
Their fans have absolutely no hope.I can see them not wanting to buy expensive tickets for entertainment value.
jkoms57
Agreed.
Huntington left this team in such shambles that it must burn down the house and build around Reynolds and Hayes, Taillon.
Any chance of bandaid working out would have to be on a 20Mil+ player
, aka not possible with Nutting running the books.
Dabofus going to the Padres game
Padres should sign Tanner Roark or Alex Wood. Strasburg would be a dream come true but gonna need more experience and someone to give you innings. I’d give Roark a 2 years 16 mill with club option for 9mill. Idk if count Richard as a all season long option. Richard Roark Davies Paddack lucchessi Roark I’d go a 6 man rotation which limits innings for Richard and Paddack. I’d also love to see lamet as a closer and trade Yates to recoup prospects you’d lose in a Myers trade.
Gotta move Myers. You could gift wrap patino baez quantril plus Ruiz and Aria’s to the royals for Ian kennedy and put kennedy in the pen. Royals pick up a haul of prospects and can stash Myers at 1st or Dh.
nypadre66
Why not just release Myers rather than give up 5 prospects for an old man just to get rid of him?
Dabofus going to the Padres game
Mlb contracts are guaranteed. Only way to move money off books is trade it. Releasing it Padres still owe money if he’s on roster or not. Nobody wants the contract. Prospect needy teams need prospects. Rebuilding clubs could expedite rebuilds by taking on bad contracts to get prospects.
Padres Forever
Exactly! It makes me sick to think of giving away lots of talent just to get rid of one disappointing player!
tombenton
Martinez would be Great , but his head and temper get in his way, he has the talent, But the front office count on him as a starter just yet. He always gets hurt in spring training.sign one the lefty
tombenton
Would rather have Keuchel than Bum
Jrmomo1000
I would like to see the cards trade for a lefthanded starter like Ray of D backs then leave Carlos as closer that’s the best way to keep him healthy.
outinleftfield
Padres are a joke. Not one move that made the team better in short or long term. Preller needed to be fired along with Green.
bjupton100
Cardinals should sign Keuichel, Cole, Rendon, trade for Betts+Bad contract. Rays pick up Hosmer, Gore, and Trammel. Trade (Addams+) for Lindor.
