The Mets announced Tuesday that they’ve designated infielder Sam Haggerty for assignment in order to open a spot on the 40-man roster for newly signed reliever Dellin Betances.
Haggerty, 25, made his MLB debut in 2019 but appeared in just 11 games and tallied only four plate appearances. A 24th-round pick by the Indians back in 2015, he made his way to the Mets alongside Walker Lockett last winter in the trade that sent catcher Kevin Plawecki to the Indians. Haggerty has played primarily second base in the minors but has experience all over the infield and outfield as well. He’s a .250/.371/.378 hitter in 155 games of Double-A ball and has batted .271/.358/.424 in a much smaller sample of 19 games in Triple-A.
Would he be available on waivers?
Yes, claim and trade. He has speed.
Jacob Rhame must have naked photos of the wilpons. They cut a young, cheap, speedy player over any of those neophyte relievers that have proved ineffective. Love the betances signing but confused on this move
Or a sex tape at the bar minimum
he’s gonna clear waivers and be back in the minors, no big loss
Seawald is 10 times worse
Will probably not get claimed. Just minor league depth. However Rhame,Bashlor and Sewald are all better options to cut
He’s at least a threat to get claimed since he has all his options left. For a team with an open 40 spot, there’s literally no downside to adding him, even if you plan on DFAing him later.
I’m beside myself that sewald is anywhere near a Mets jersey
or Lockett
they will, in due time. moves are still made in the spring plus the Mets have more than enough infield depth as opposed to pitching
And he’s a switch hitter.. But enough about his personal life!
Oh my…..
Hmm. Glenn Burke and Billy Bean all over again?
i dont see the appeal to be honest. versatility and speed asside, he cant hit a lick.
He can hit better than half of last year’s tigers
If he can carry his AA OBP to the majors he’d be worth a little something, but that’s a long shot. Still, a really bad team might take a cheap gamble on him. Tell him if he’ll need a .360 OBP to stick–if he can do that he can use his speed. He went 49/13 SB/CS recently. Haggerty might be a two win player for a few years. If I had room on my roster I’d take the chance.
Hoping we can stash him at AAA
WHY
Yeah, there are at least three relievers especially Rhame, who I would have cut instead, but they have a lot of infield depth too.
Sewald is the goat when it comes to being awful
Go look at SNY’s Metsblog – they put Haggerty on their projected 26-man roster last night…
The Cerrone drones, they’re idiots
They are like the dumbest callers to the FAN. There hasn’t been a proposed trade for a declining veteran for the Mets best up-and-coming players that they didn’t like: Cutch and Harrison from the Pirates, Tulo and CarGo from the Rox., They echo and amplify the worst instincts of the least educated Mets fans.
Sad but true. Every comment is like a dozen 13 year olds with ADD packed into a closet. Ugh.
That was distinctly amusing.
Like to see the Padres claim him, we need some speed and a utility guy.
Hell of a Christmas present huh? Get designated for assignment on Christmas Eve? sucks for him but I’m sure someone will claim him or he’ll wind up back in AAA and probably get another shot soon enough.
The Plawecki trade for Haggis and Lockett was another amazing talent dump by Wags. Imagine if he had packaged up all the talent he sent away for a few premium young players. Instead, to date, he’s done such as given away 8 useful minor leaguers for backup OFers who were available in FA for nothing but 3-5m.
Seriously? Plawecki hit .222 for the Indians. How does that qualify as “amazing talent”? And couldn’t the Indians have picked up something similar as a FA?
Does anybody know what’s going on with Haggerty right now? He was DFA’d two weeks ago, was he claimed?
