The Chicago Cubs have been in contact with free agent right-hander Josh Lindblom, per MLB Network’s Jon Morosi (via twitter).
The possibility of a signing seems far fetched, however, as Morosi notes that other teams are further along in their discussions with Lindblom at this point. Not to mention, of course, the Cubs are notably frugal these days, making a quick strike signing for Lindblom unlikely. There is some interest on the Cubs’ part, however, and one would think Lindblom – an Indiana native – would be intrigued by the possibility of calling Wrigley Field home.
Though he’s not exactly among the most sought after nor bankable free agent arms on the market, Lindblom does come with an intriguing amount of upside after an MVP season in the Korean Baseball Organization. He was a 20-game winner in the KBO with a 2.50 ERA in 194 2/3 innings, this on the heels of a 15-4 season that carried a 2.88 ERA in 168 2/3 innings. That said, Lindblom is set to turn 33 in June, and his major league career prior to his success in the KBO consisted of a series of fly-by-night affairs. From 2011 until 2017, Lindblom suited up for the Dodgers, Phillies, Rangers, A’s, and Pirates. He did manage a palatable 4.10 ERA/4.27 FIP in 147 innings spread across five seasons.
There are a number of pitchers ahead of Lindblom in the free agent pecking order, but there’s enough need league-wide that he should have no trouble finding a home. MLBTR predicted he would secure a two-year, $8MM contract with the Astros, Brewers, Dodgers, Twins, Cubs and Angels all seeming like viable fits. Considering the scuttlebutt coming out of Chicago, however, even that modest commitment might be too rich for the Cubs until they shed some payroll.

I’m going to call BS on the no money talk until I see some of these clubs losing money instead of making millions in profits.
Dodger Dog
But the only reason the teams exist is to turn a profit. Just like every other business.
spinach
Where does the “but” fit in?
evanskirt599
I think that the whole Cubs organization is BS,I have been a cubs fan since 1982 we finally win a World Series and still have some good players still in tact, and in stead of filling some holes Ricketts is going to start trading everyone, what kind of owner would trade away one of the best catchers in the game, just to save 7 million dollars in luxury taxes. 7 million dollars is about 5 home games of beer sales at $10.25 a beer now that’s real BS there
bravesfan88
Well, at least you aren’t a Marlins fan. Remember, it could always be worse. Lol
andrewgauldin
Yup. Win the Marlins win a World Series they trade their all stars.
Georgiajeff
Trade them every chance they get
andrewgauldin
I’d blow this team up next off season regardless of what happens. Too many contracts that will turn into a Pujols type contract. Start the rebuild early acquiring massive prospect capital for Contreras, Baez, Bryant, Rizzo. This is how the cubs don’t end up like the Phillies in recent years
Mikel Grady
I go to cubs games and don’t drink that cheap bud light . I buy 3 Floyd’s Zombie Dust $13 so they should in on cole .
pullhitter445
Wow another crap potential move by the cubs. This team only is gonna win 1 World Series with that core group, do to a series of poor Theo free agent signings and bad trades. Unbelievable
johnrealtime
Relax, probably a few million per year lottery ticket
pullhitter445
I’m relaxed, just stating it’s over for the cubs. While they haven’t admitted it, hiring David Ross is just the beginning of the loosing returning to what the cubs do best. It’s been fun.
twentyforty
Clown. Go follow soccer. You don’t have a clue about the sport of baseball.
chitown311
Actually he’s 100% correct. Get mad all you want, but facts are facts
Dogbone
Facts? Like the ‘fact’ the CWS will be heading into their 8th consecutive loosing season!
wordonthestreet
Ouch!! Lol. Chitown has nothing to say about that
denimvest
not pushing all in on FA again tells me ownership doesn’t trust the front office to produce cheap young talent anytime soon. if the goal is to finish this year with a World Series championship then you must do more. maybe they don’t need to care anymore and can value money over legacy.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
I find it odd that Anaheim can wish out 250 mil to Pujols and nearly half a billion dollars to Trout only 7 years later. But the Cubs cant spend 100mil in one off season. It doesnt make sense to me. Baseball doesn’t have a salary cap yet teams are handicapped on what they can spend a year. Which increases every year.
willyb
You note what the Angels have done… yet spending those dollars has gotten them how many World Series rings?. Theo has made mistakes, easy to point out in retrospect… leaving a monster challenge in fixing it. unfortunately they’ll need to move some core… sure hoping the auxiliary moves are wise ones… As always, time will tell
ChiSoxCity
The cubs haven’t made one impactful move since they signed Lester.
Dogbone
And what year did your white Sox last, have a winning season?
wordonthestreet
Ouch! ChiSoxCity is trying to figure that out. Lol but she is having trouble
iml12
That’s not true at all. Darvish contract looks pretty good right now. Kimbrel pitched 20 horrible innings last year but to call that a dud right now is short sighted. The castellanos trade last year was very good.
gobears
Come on. If every comment was anonymous would you disagree with CSC? Instead it’s when did the White Sox win last?? Who cares ?
ChiSoxCity
Dogbreath, worry about what the bubs offense is gonna look like with Castellanos next season. Mediocre is my guess. No hitting. No pitching. New manager with zero coaching/managing experience. Have fun with that.
ChiSoxCity
Darvish has been a bust for the bubs. One decent year where they didn’t make the playoffs for $125MM, and all is well? It doesn’t take much to satisfy you bubs fans. Talk about low standards.
ChiSoxCity
*without Castellanos
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Robin had zero experience in coaching.
Ozzie Guillen only had 2 years of coaching
Maddon and his logic ran its course. David Ross knows this team in and out. He’ll do just fine.
iml12
There is 3 years left on the deal. I understand you probably don’t actually watch baseball but darvish the last half of the year was a bonafide ace. If making the playoffs was the end all be all of a contract there is a lot of horrible contracts around the mlb, starting with Mike trout and everyone on the white Sox. The cubs have a great core of hitters with or without casty. I sure would like him back though.
ChiSoxCity
imI12, you can’t read? I said one decent year. now he’s suddenly an ace and the cubs are winning the nl central? you people are special.
iml12
You clearly can’t read. I never said anything about winning the central. He pitched like an ace for 2-3 months and 20 million is looking pretty fair next year and in the future
ChiSoxCity
Doesn’t matter, the cubs got negativity ROI on Darvish, and proved every other front office out there right. Darvish isn’t worth his contract.
iml12
Nonsense
gobears
Who specifically do think they should sign for $100,000,000 that will make us WS contenders again? Just asking.
chitown311
Dumpster Divin’ Theo!
ChiSoxCity
Good depth signing!
chitown311
Good low risk/high ceiling signing
ChiSoxCity
Yeah, cuz Arrieta.
chitown311
Good addition to the core four
iml12
I actually wouldn’t mind this signing for the Cubs as a co 5th starter/swingman with chatwood. The rotation is fine and better than 90 percent baseball. Their backend of the bullpen is set, so cheap big upside guys seems smart. They really need casty back or another big time bat.
ChiSoxCity
The cubs starting rotation is just meh. And by meh, I mean mediocre. Darvish has to pitch out of his mind for the cubs to make the playoffs.
iml12
Maybe but like I said compared to the rest of the league it’s above average. KH is one of the most underrated pitchers in all of baseball. All he does is pitch solid every single year. Quintana is an innings eater that gives you a chance to win most of his starts. I am nervous about Lester and I have no clue what chatwood would do but his Ks were up and his walks were way down. He pitched a solid 76 innings in 19.
Georgiajeff
I see your replies to comments and you really don’t contribute anything at all to the discussion do you.
jhanley108
So finishing 3rd is fine with this rotation and a closer who gives up runs like a guy with irritable bowel syndrome. Enjoy 4th place.
iml12
Kimbrel is the closer not much they can do about that now. If he doesn’t drastically improve they arent making the playoffs. The Cubs had a ridiculous amount of blown saves last year. Maddon refused to stop putting strop and chisek in high leverage spots no matter how bad they were pitching. Kimbrel gave up a homerun every other batter. Cubs playoffs chances are coming down to Kimbrel.
ChiSoxCity
Again with the Maddon criticism. He used the bullpen Epstein gave him. Collectively the bullpen was awful. Couldn’t hold a lead or close put a game. What’s he supposed to do, go out and pitch himself? Leave his starters in the game when they’re getting knocked around?
iml12
You clearly didn’t watch a lot of cubs baseball. He consistently pulled starters prematurely not the opposite. And yes the bullpen consist of more than two players. If strop and chisek aren’t getting it done you try option C well before the 10th blown save. Wick and kintzler were finally utilized down the stretch in leverage spots but it took him a long time to figure it out
ChiSoxCity
I watched the games. Maddon used his bullpen like every other manager in the MLB other than Tampa. The average innings for starting pitchers league wide is 5 innings. 5! Most of the cubs starters were getting knocked out of the game much earlier than that. It puts pressure on your bullpen to pick up the slack if it happens too often, which it did with cubs starting pitching. Maddon’s job is to win games. You won’t do that if you leave a starter in who’s walking batters and giving up homeruns with runners on base inning after inning. Even when the starters did their job and left by the 6th or 7th inning (rare) with a lead, the bullpen blew the lead and the game more often then not. You’re just blaming Maddon because you didn’t like him. Fact is he had an excellent win percentage before he came to the cubs, and still does now. Its about time you cubs fans start looking real hard at Theo Epstein and the roster moves he’s made. He doesn’t get you quality players despite the high payroll, which is a red flag. It’s HIS bullpen, HIS starting rotation, HIS hitting lineup. Not Maddon’s.
iml12
Haha. Another incorrect assumption. I loved Maddon and wish they didn’t let go a hall of famer for a guy with zero experience. But he had his flaws and sticking to his guns with his veteran pen guys was one of them. Everyone in the world could see strop didn’t have it last year, except Maddon. Chisek had a stretch of at least a month with same problem. Yet he kept rolling them out in the 8th and 9th. The Cubs actually had 5 Starting pitchers last year. Most teams had 3-4 and a swingman or an opener. Maddon consistently pulled starters with low pitch counts doing well, especially last year. I’ve been a cubs fan for a long time so I’ve seen the lean years and the last 5 years have been a blast. Bash Theo all you want but this has been the most competitive 5 Year run in the last 100 years of any team in Chicago
ChiSoxCity
Strop and Cishek were supposed to be the best setup relievers for the cubs. Who the hell else was Maddon supposed to give the ball to? Give me names. Who in that bullpen was underutilized?
iml12
I mentioned it earlier. Wick and kintzler both pitched extremely well. All you do is troll the cubs but clearly have no clue about the team. Maybe you should considering focusing on the white sox
Georgiajeff
He did use the pen he was given, but he would pull starters who were crusing in games with low pitch counts and then overworking his bullpen. For someone who spends a good bunch of time here crapping all over the Cubs you sure don’t know much about them.
jhanley108
This organization is an embarrassment. 3 yrs from a WS and not even competitive anymore but they blow smoke up fans butts that buy into the lightning in a bottle theory on all these what ifs and never were players. I’ve been a Cub fan over 50 yrs and was really excited about the “sustained” success and fell for Epstein’s BS. Winning once shouldn’t be good enough.
gobears
Not to mention the ticket prices. $75 for bleacher seat if you want to see them play any good team. Theo built a winner but failed at sustaining one. Overpaying for FA’s and trading away valuable talent for average players. It took 5 years to build and 4 to tear it down. Now he HAS to hit on EVERY trade or it’s back to crap baseball that no one can afford to go see.. Remember In Theo We trust??
robert-5
If this is truly the financial situation for the Cubs, cant even afford a washout from the KBO, then Theo needs to admit his failures and blow this thing up one more time.
Yes, they won it all in ‘16, but they got a bit lucky, and after overpaying for him, Joe rode Chapman like a rented mule. Proving how weak our pen was even in a Championship year.
The whole point of the original tear down was to build a competitive team to contend every year. As currently constructed, this squad stands no chance against the truly elite teams of MLB. Sure, they could get lucky and catch fire entering the postseason, but the opposite has been true in recent years with these guys. You cant win consistently without developing ANY pitching. Not a single arm guaranteed a spot on the 26 man roster has come thru the Cubs system. Failure.
ortsacnilrats
Most of what you said is sad but true. We have money off the books this offseason but we can’t afford to pay this dude? What could he possibly be commanding on the open market?
bigdaddyt
Come on he’s the only guy Shatkins will even consider getting
bigbadjohnny
Theo just had some coffee with this pitcher……nothing really happen.
bigbadjohnny
Has anyone besides the Reds make gains in the Central yet ?…….
Brewers subtracted…..Cardinals subtracted…….Cubs subtracted…..
and the Pirates are a mess…..
just wait and see what happens this week. !
paindonthurt
I think the Cardinals will make a significant deal. Losing Ozuna won’t hurt them. They have plenty of OF depth. Look for them to add a front line starter or potentially significant position player likely via trade.
bandude
I recently had a conversation with the Schwan’s delivery guy
ChiSoxCity
I don’t know which situation is worse: a team that spends a lot of money on mediocre players (cubs), or a team that’s perpetually one or two players away because good players won’t take their money.
bigbadjohnny
Notice most of these replies are from White Sox fans…….must be boring at 35th & Shields !
Georgiajeff
They are obsessed with the Cubs. and yet know nothing about them
