Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins chatted with reporters yesterday about his club’s place in the offseason transactional carousel, as Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic (subscription link) was among those to cover.
Atkins emphasized that the organization has been “aggressive” on the free agent market, especially with regard to starting pitching. While there isn’t a deal to show for it just yet, there’s obviously ample time remaining and a slew of appealing options still on the market.
What of the top options available? “There’s not a free agent that we haven’t touched base with,” he said. It’s tough to see the Toronto organization as a serious player for any of this winter’s super-premium free agents, but Atkins certainly suggested that the front office has at least seen cause to check in on all the possibilities. Whether or not it’ll happen is far from clear — the guess here is it won’t — -but Atkins says the Blue Jays have the capacity to go into nine-figure territory for the right player.
It’s still anyone’s guess which arms the Jays will come away with. But Atkins did strongly suggest the team is likelier to make significant moves via free agency than trade. He expressed a disinclination to part with youthful “players that we’re really excited about” in order to acquire a compelling new MLB hurler.
One possibility: Hyun-Jin Ryu. We haven’t heard much about where the market is headed for the standout southpaw, but Jon Heyman of MLB Network tweets that the Jays are “in” on him. Just how to interpret that isn’t clear, particularly in light of the Atkins declaration that the team has cast an exceedingly wide net, but it sounds as if there’s at least some real interest on the part of the Toronto organization.
There’s still ample opportunity left for the Jays on the market. And the team is offering notable opportunity for free agents — a selling point in and of itself for certain hurlers. Atkins said that the Jays don’t feel fully committed to any starters other than Chase Anderson for 2020. That’s not to say that four more additions will be forthcoming, but it speaks to the team’s internal uncertainty and willingness to compete jobs.

I predict a Keuchel and Lindblom signing.
And wishful thinking of a trade for an ace.
ALuepke12
I was thinking the same thing. Keuchel along with a Teheran or Lindblom. Highly doubt the Ace trade but will keep wishing.
jaysfansince1977
I have no doubt both could end up in a Jays uni, but I hope we exhaust all avenues to aquire Ryu before jumping on Keuchel and Porcello is a better option than Lindblom in my opinion!
Marner#16
jaysfansince77,
2 WS and you won’t see anymore. You’ve gotta be kidding me you’d take Porcello. He’s so up and down either good or awful. Have him.
jaysfansince1977
wow ya just showing up?????
iains 2
I’d trade Ace easily… bring back Diamond
jdgoat
Ace for the Phanatic
Down with OBP
Would be nice….my money is on Walker, Gausman, Teheran and Miley. Not sure they will ever deviate from their valuations to land anyone other teams are heavily in on. They aren’t good with fluid or dynamic situations in free agency.
its_happening
Adding two of them on a 1-year as bounce back candidates would be a solid move. Walker is intriguing.
Marner#16
With the offense they have. They will not spend/acquire enough pitching to make it challenging. It’s all about the Red Sox, and of course the Yankees… both teams will continue to dominate the division.
bluejaysfan
Adding those two would be a good start. I’d like to see the Jays add 2-3 of:
Julio Tehran
Tanner Roark
Rick Porcello
Michael Pineda
Danny Salazar
Tijuan Walker
Dallas Keuchel
Hyun-Jim Ryu
Alex Wood
Even if you can grab 3-4 of this group and some go to the bullpen. As the article states there is plenty of opportunity in the starting rotation for this team (not to mention the bullpen). The Jays are still not in a position to win this year. Great time to secure a couple guys that can help in 2021 and 2022. If you can get an Ace on a 3-4 deal and front load it I’m all in but I don’t see that happening.
jimmertee
Same story, different day. Elite only. Win now.
Ducey
The notion that the Jays could sign a bunch (or even one) of elite UFA’s so the team can win now is just silly.
The only way the Jays will ever win is by way of the draft and trades. UFA’s do not want to come to TOR. Never have. The exception is if they can win a World Series (Molitor, Winfield, Morris) and maybe Roger Clemens.
The plan should be continue to draft and develop, supplement with trades, and then once they are a contender, hopefully they will able to attract an “elite” UFA.
Signing someone who has rejected a qualifying offer works against their plan. To massively overpay to fix one of 4 open spots in their rotation, and lose international bonus money and a high pick makes little sense.
I wish they would stop talking about it.
Nate 16
Your right in a lot of aspects of your comment
They would need to overpay for a FA SP. I thought Wheeler was the perfect fit for them. They could have paid him 125-130 to play in Toronto. The first year or maybe even 2 would help with attendance and they have young players to get excited about. Then the last 3 years of the contract they could be competitive. If their aiming to compete in 2021-22 then you could argue sighing a SP that could lead the rotation in the latter half of the contract would be better than signing a couple lower tier guys now and having their contracts end when they plan to compete and being in need of SP when their hitters are in their primes. Need to try and align those windows
Ducey
There will always be the next big FA signing next winter and the winter after that. Why lay out a ton of money this winter, just so they can be a little less crappy?
Stick with the plan. Develop and assess prospects, try and sign flip candidates for the deadline, trade Giles, draft well. This season will be about figuring out if Vlad can play 3rd, if Cavan can hit for a better average, if Tellez can be a 1B, sort thru the outfielders and starting pitchers.

Free agent SP in 2020-21 offseason is thin. You sign an ace now because there are no aces next year. Paxton is not an ace. Stroman is not an ace. Bauer is not an ace. Tanaka is not an ace. There are your top 4 arms for next year.
Paxton is a nice signing to compliment a Cole or Strasburg along with Pearson, Thornton and an arm to be named later. Suddenly you have a staff.
Ducey
Cole and Strasburg are not signing in TOR. Period. So then what?
At a certain point, the money is not a determining factor – see Zack Wheeler.
And Paxton, Tanaka and Bauer are plenty good. And there are some very good pitchers the year after that.
its_happening
Can’t sign in TOR if TOR isn’t willing to back up the money truck. Overpay and they will have Toronto’s full attention. You are part of the problem; a defeatist attitude with no desire to want to be the very best. The owners have the money, get it done. Go out and prove you want to win. The culture starts with them and Rogers has to have that winning mentality they’ve never, ever had.
Those “very good pitchers” are not going to get the job done. Go get an ace. Two are available. Land one. Show some guts.
Tools_of_Ignorance
UFA’s don’t exist in MLB
Ducey
True. Unless the U stands for Unreasonable,
its_happening
Ducey – clearly two other GMs managed to sign players, and an argument could be made the Clemens deal was more than what he was predicted to receive. That’s what Toronto has to deal with, so deal with it and overpay.
They can sign free agents and still develop.
I do agree with your last line; they should stop talking about it. They have already wasted money on Grichuk and wanted to do the same for Gibson. These guys are proving they cannot spend properly.
firegibby
Spin that’s all shatkins do. They’ll sign Pineada and call it a big signing.
jaysfansince1977
Blah, Blah, Blah! Same old spin from you too Fire, try and get out of your comfort zone and join the real world!
firegibby
Lol coming from you and talking about real world. Lol just another projectionist.
Dan LeBlanc
As well as trying to overpay for Ryu, Shapiro/Atkins should also be hard after free agent KBO veteran Gwang-Hyun Kim. Kim has pitched for 12 years in the super offence inflated KBO and has a record of 136-77 with an ERA of 3.27 in 1673.2 IP . I know those aren’t MLB numbers, but those are pretty good stats for any league. Kim could be a smart, out of the box/ under the radar signing. Offer a 3 year deal for a reasonable AAV and at worst the Jays would have another LH out of the bullpen who could pitch multiple innings.
firegibby
Ryu is 33 y would you want to over pay for a very injury prone pitcher.
The Ghost of Bobby Bonilla
The Jays can’t land a top free agent. The issue has to do with taxes/current exchange rates.
They literally need to outbid other teams by 20 to 30% just to present an equivalent offer to another team.
firegibby
Jay’s pay in US dollars. They have plenty of money.
Mario93
Ross Atkins – We have great flexibility to add to our pitching staff, the upside is certainly there given our resources. We will be extremely aggressive in looking to add.
A month or so into free agency when half the pitchers are already gone..
Blue Jays fans – “Oh, stfu Ross”.
Lol
its_happening
The issue is ownership. Prior to Rogers, the Jays could sign a top player. They proved it.
jdgoat
Just stop talking dude. Yes, a lot of stuff in the past was taken out of context or obviously just saying stuff you had to say. But this is the first offseason where this front office really has an opportunity to build for the future. Don’t talk about being able to do something. Actually do something.
its_happening
They’ve had 2+ years to build for the future. They decided to delay the process. By delaying they didn’t take full advantage of Donaldson or Smoak. It also appears they will let Giles’ worth slip away. That’s not good.
spinach
Sign Gio, had a good season, get him for $5m or less.
its_happening
Ryu might command 2 for 45+ with an option or 3 for around 70, give or take, thanks to the recent Hamels and Wheeler signings. A two year deal might be perfect timing for Toronto.
Jays should have never announced they would spend. They have numerous questions around the diamond, numerous questions on the mound and too many OFs. Terrible approach and questionable PR, again, by the Shapiro-led front office. Although the entire blame cannot be laid on the front office; ownership is a major problem. They’ve been the problem for 20 years and will continue to be the problem in the foreseeable future.
dalrob
They will sign not one player of note. Profit first, team second. No vision to take risks so that full stadium puts $ in their pockets. 2015 was all Anthopolous working against their wishes. Rogers is a ruthless corporation.
dalrob
And please stop blaming Shatkins. This is ALL ownership. They are just flunkies. Anyone in the 416 and 905 who thinks otherwise is horribly deluded.\\\\
its_happening
Dalrob you replied to me. I referenced the owners being a major problem. I also agree with your first point.
dalrob
I don’t think I did? My comment is on the left of the margin. Just a general comment from a frustrated Jays fan who sees how Rogers operates here in the GTA. Wasn’t meant as a shot at you. What you said was relevant and intelligent.
its_happening
I hear you. My apologies. Fans can look at the history of the team since Rogers took over late-2000 and actually see how they’ve operated. It’s atrocious.
jimmertee
One could argue that the BlueJays have’t had an elite GM since Gillick left. AA was okay in my books but not elite.
When you don’t have an elite Gm there is a poor performing team that follows.
Shapiro was hired for his leadership and business sense. He is not a great baseball man even though he tries to talk the talk.
Every comment that comes out of Atkins mouth is a spin. He seems like a smart guy but hasn’t shown it in his trades, signings and claims except for a few lightning in a bottle finds.
If the Jays aren’t going to go elite, the organization might as well tank again and go for the draft picks. It might be another 5 years before this team is anything with these guys at the helm. Add that to the 3 years since the end of 2016 season when a full tear down was called for by me and others in these pages and you have got a long road of nothing.
Forget signing more middle of the road starting pitching. That is stupid. Go Elite to teach the kids how to win, to show the fans it is about winning or go home, Shapiro and Atkins.
charlesk
The reality of Shapiro is that he’s just a mediocre baseball man. In his eighteen seasons as GM or President, his teams have a .485 winning percentage with 1,500 losses and thirteen third place or worse finishes. He’s never taken one of his teams to the World Series. Insiders know it was Antonetti and Chernoff who built the playoff teams in Cleveland in 2013 and 2016, not Shappy. Attendance collapsed in both Cleveland and Toronto under his Presidency. In his MBA corporate speak, there been a complete failure of organizational design and behaviour. He claims to “collaborate”, but really he’s an ego-driven leader who fails to inspire dynamism or success. If you aspire to mediocrity, he’s your guy.
charlesk
So tired of nothing but talk… it’s always the same refrain:
“There’s not a free-agent pitcher that we haven’t touched base with (ed. note: “checked in” on).
We have been aggressively trying to understand every opportunity and we’ll continue to do that (translation: “we continue to ‘gather’ information”).”
If the budget is only $100 million then why ‘check in’ on Wheeler? Or Ryu or Keuchel? You also need upgrades at 1B and CF in addition to more MLB arms. Just sign Tanner Roark, Jeremy Hellickson and Michael Wacha and admit defeat.
Why ownership tolerates such mediocrity is incomprehensible… either you want to win or you should sell the team. What’s the point of acting like you’re in a small market, with a mediocre small market front office (Shapiro’s career winning percentage as a GM and Team President is .485 over eighteen seasons with 1,500 losses)? This is the Six. Act like it.
jimmertee
Rogers is all about making money. Period. They don’t care about winning.
its_happening
Ownership is part of the problem. They’ve been stuck in mediocrity since buying the team September 2000 because they decided to take that route.
Murphy NFLD
The jays need to sign 2 of Ryu,Tanner Roark, Julio Teheran & tailjuan walker. Walker and Teheran have amazing upside and are young, there my off-season wish list. The jays should be in on the Asian center fielder as well. I know they said they are out but if MLBTR is right on his contract 6 mil over 2 years what do they have to lose
firegibby
Tehran would get lit up in the ale.

Guess these FO dudes can’t walk and chew gum at the same time? All of that “information gathering“, but if they don’t act then the information has no value. To know and not to act is not to know…
