Angels, Anthony Rendon In “Active Talks”; Rangers Out

By Connor Byrne | December 11, 2019 at 9:00pm CDT

9:00pm: The Rangers are out of the race, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. They never wanted to go more than five years for Rendon, who has sought seven, TR Sullivan of MLB.com tweets. They’ve now turned their attention to the No. 2 third baseman on the market, Josh Donaldson, per Sullivan.

8:29pm: The Angels are engaged in “active talks” with free-agent third baseman Anthony Rendon, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. They’re “working hard” to sign him, per Jon Heyman of MLB Network, while Rosenthal adds that the Angels are hoping to finalize a deal tonight.

With the Dodgers seemingly drifting from the Rendon race, it may come down to a pair of AL West rivals to sign the longtime Washington superstar. The Rangers remain in the mix, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Jeff Wilson, who notes that they’ve met with Rendon’s agent, Scott Boras, once during the Winter Meetings.

While Rendon’s a Texas native, which could work in the Rangers’ favor, it seems the Angels are determined to get this done. At the moment, they’re “pretty deep in negotiation” to sign him, Jesse Dougherty of the Washington Post reports. The Angels already lost out on two big targets in Stephen Strasburg (Nationals) and Gerrit Cole (Yankees) this week. Cole’s exit from the board left Rendon as the best player available, and he should join Strasburg and Cole in signing for well over $200MM. It appears the Angels are prepared to pay the price.

Rendon & Kluber would be good for about 10-15 wins.

    Need More.

Well this signing makes almost zero sense. Everyone knew the Angels needed starting pitching more than anyone. Most folks picked the Angels to land Cole. Some picked the Angels to land Cole and Strasburg. Now that they went from expecting to get both of the top 2 pitchers on the market to getting zero of the top 3 pitchers on the market they are gonna pretend they have different needs and shift their payroll focus to offense by signing Rendon? I guess maybe they just want to be able to tell their fans that they spent money this offseason and trick them into thinking they will contend. I know EVERYONE is getting tired of watching the Angels waste Trout’s prime years. If they had the money to buy Rendon they should have gone after Rendon they would have been better off paying Strasburg or even Wheeler. At least those guys fill the Angels biggest need. When everyone knows you have needed starting pitching for years and you instead spend a ton of cash on 1 player that doesn’t even pitch? BRILLIANT!

An elite talent at a premium position where the Angels have historically lacked a long term solution. They likely covered half of Rendon’s AAV for next year by getting rid of Cozart, and two years from now, likely almost all of it will just be replacing Pujols’ contract. They have the money to add more than one of these contracts right now, Eppler said as much, and the numbers back that up.

Surprised you expected the Angels to get any starting pitching considering the FO’s incompetence and who they were bidding against. Just because a team has a glaring need for a position doesnt mean that player will go to that team. Angels might get Rendon simply because their only bidder might be the Rangers, who arent a Rendon away from winning anything.

You are spot on. You still gotta have at least a #2 starter, right now we have all 4 and 5’s it seems. Since we dont know how many innings Othani can do in 2020, he could be legit #1 innings wise for 2021 if we could get 180 innings by then. His stuff is #1 just too many ????? For me

Well, don’t have an opinion on Rendon but you are wrong about most folks picking the Angels to land Cole….the only ones who thought that was in the bag were the SoCal Angels fans who thought that “coming home” was the most important thing to Cole…..anyone who watched after their WS loss when he wore the Scott Boras hat for his interview knew he was going to go to the team that offered him the most money and best support system to win….which in the Angels case may have been positive on the money aspect but they seriously lack the current talent to challenge the A’s let alone the Astros to win the West…..with the money he was in line to make, he could “come home” to 10 homes in Newport Beach!

Two thirds of people picked Cole for the Angels. And he was the obvious landing spot until the Yankees made their presence known.

When the Yankees seemed to care about the luxury tax, the Angels were still a good bet, when the Yankees seemed to not care about the luxury tax, then the Angels became a bad bet.

I wanted the Angels to go after Wheeler. But that’s just me.

I thought Wheeler and Keuchel would be a good choice then maybe Miley or Porcello as a low cost innings eater to help protect Canning and Ohtani a bit. The Wheeler deal sure looks like a bargain now imo

Just because the Angels had a need for him doesnt make them a good landing spot for Cole (in the sense of probability). They didnt even put a bid past $300MM. Dodgers put out a 8 year $300MM flat bid for Cole and the Angels’ bid was below the Dodgers’ bid. They probably shouldve went after Stras where they mightve actually had a chance to sign him.

I’d of pick Scott Boras’ “mystery team” to sign Cole before I’d ever pick the Angels to be the one to pony up. Im not sure where you got the “two thirds” from, but even if it were true that two thirds picked the Angels to land Cole, they must not know much about the FA landscape 2019.

btw, the Yankees cared about dialing back the lux tax to reset it so they can make a big splash. Since they were able to do just that a couple years ago they sat pat until they found the guy to make such a splash on.

          You guys don’t get it……

A team has to develop players – particularly pitching.

You now have one of the best pitching coaches in MLB. At least 5 pitchers now on the roster are going to get noticeably better in 2020.

Cole’s 9 year contract will end up hirting the Yankee’s. Cole grew up in So. Cal but the biggest Yankees fan, he was always going to the Yankees. if anything the Angels drove up the price of Cole only weakening the Yankees in the long run.

Wheeler wasn’t interested in playing anywhere else but the east coast. Strasburg wanted to go back to the Nats so your point is moot. Signing Rendon provides protection for Trout. The Angels haven’t a good 3B like this since Troy Glaus.

I think the original comment isn’t and indictment on Rendon’s value so much as it is on the FO knee-jerk to not landing any top pitching talent. Barring any major trades, the Angels offense will be potent, but they will lose a ton of games 8-7, 7-6, 10-8; because they can’t pitch. It’s the same as it’s been Trout’s entire career. The front office over pays for a bat, promising that next year they will land their Ace. Can’t win big that way.

The expectation was never that they were signing both Cole and Strasburgh get real.

And to suggest they should not pick up an elite FA at an offensive position if need just shows your lack of understanding of baseball.

Cole Strassburgh and Wheeler are gone. Those are the facts. So are you suggesting that the Angels should punish themselves and not sign Rendon because they “should have” signed one of the other 3. That is lunacy.

They are still looking at pitching and the Rendon signing will not stop them from signing any FA pitcher left should they choose to do so.

Pivoting to lock up Rendon after losing out on Cole was a brillant move

He got the “two thirds” from the same place I got “most folks” from. This actual sites own free agent prediction contest. I don’t think it was actually two thirds but last I checked over 63% of people that took part in the contest picked Cole to land with the Angels. People were criticizing me for saying most but I think 63% definitely counts as “most.” Many people (though not most) picked the Angels to land Stras as well on the Free Agent prediction board, so I don’t know how anyone can say either statements I made were untrue. I’m not disperaging Rendon as a player or even the fact that the Angels signed him after Cole, Stras, and Wheeler were all off the board. My point was they should have spent the money sooner on the starting pitching they so desperately needed. It is very likely they could have offered the exact same contract to Stras instead of Rendon and Stars would have taken it. The Nats deferred $80 mill of the Stras contract and the Angels deferred none of Rendon’s. I am sure Strasburg would be more than happy to take a contract that doesn’t require $80 million be deferred. That would have cost the Angels the same amount of cash and filled a much bigger need. They also could have outbid the Phillies for Wheeler. If they had $245 million to spend I’m sure they could have gone up to $120 or $130 million to land Wheeler. Or they could have just said screw Rendon and taken a leap of faith by dropping another 80 or 90 million to turn Rendon into Cole. It’s hard to pick on them for not doing that because they may have just felt like they didn’t have the money. The fact of the matter is that Strasburg and Wheeler were both gettable without them having to spend much (if any) more than they did on Rendon but they waited until their biggest needs were unavailable before spending anything. The bottom line is that they didn’t get what they needed and they could have.

Well Jay, the Angels were four games over 500 in mid July. So besides adding Rendon. They’ll add a starting pitcher. And then they’ll add Upton, Ohtani, LaStella, Canning, Adell, Bundy, Middleton, Heaney. Simmons and a catcher.

I don’t think people know a lot about the Angels.

Rocky, I’m only talking about a wild card. I’m not talking about catching the Astros.

As far as the wild card, there are the A’s, TB, Twins/Indians and Red Sox. Those are the teams I’m saying the Angels can compete with. Not the Astros. And I’m saying “contend’.

But the Angels need health. But so do the A’s. Their projected starting staff wasn’t exactly healthy last year.

As a Dodgers fan I am glad we didn’t offer him a contract. I’m also glad the Angels look to be all in. But if they are going for it then they need alot of pitching and another bat at catcher or the outfield. I’d like to see them sign two of Keuchel, MadBum, Porcello, and if Dodgers don’t resign him Ryu. Keuchel gets more groundballs than anyone in MLB. MadBum’s velocity is down but is only a couple years removed from his dirtbike accident that caused shoulder surgery. Hes only going to be 30 years old and is a top notch competitor. If hes on your team you love him, if hes not you hate him. Rick Porcello pitches 200 innings every year, has a Cy Young (stolen from Verlander), and some how wins a ton of games every year. A change of scenery might do Porcello some good and you might get him on a short cheap contract so he can re-enter free agency next year. Ryu has been a stud ace type pitcher when healthy ever since the Dodgers signed him. People just dont see the western teams play much. He is like the Korean Gregg Maddux. I want the Dodgers to re-sign him, but if not then he could help you alot. If it was not for a 4 game stretch were he gave up 1/2 his runs on the year he would have won the Cy Young in 2019. These are great pitchers left on the market. After getting a few starters then they can get a couple bullpen guys. Or you could make a splash on the trade market by swinging a utrade for Jon Gray from the Rockies. Work out a blockbuster with the Red Sox for David Price and maybe an outfielder. Could you imagine Betts and Price heading to the Angels. Corey Kluber from the Indians. Or you could work out a blockbuster with the Cubs for Yu Darvish and an outfielder or Darvish and Contreras to fortify the catcher position. Then you are looking at a playoff team that could compete with teams like the Yanks, Astros, Dodgers, and Braves/Phillies for a Championship. Yes your payroll would be high and your farm system would be empty but Mike Trout would be in the playoffs. Now is the time.

I like what you said and agree with almost all of it. However, I do want to point out that Darvish is absolutely staying with the Cubs. He has a full no trade clause and just a day or two ago announced he has, “No intentions of waiving” it. He wants to stay a Cub and is afforded that right per his contract. I see no way he gets traded unless the acquiring team offers him an extension as a result of the trade which is unlikely because he is under contract for 4 more years and widely considered overpaid as well. You also mentioned 5 teams that the Angels should try to contend with. Astros, Yanks, Dodgers, Braves and Phillies. I think the Mets would have something to say about that considering they finished ahead of the 4th place Phillies in the exact same.division. I know the Nats would also have something to say about not being included in a list of serious competitors considering they also finished above the Phillies in that division and won it all. I loved your post though. Just not sure why the Phillies would be mentioned on that list and the Nationals wouldn’t.

@thetruth you come across as uneducated or just a hater…your team just got cole yet you come here and bash a team on the other coast. Get over yourself bro, we all remember how the Patchwork angels out rally monkeyed your High priced squad squad pretty handly….out slugged was correct . Scores were 9-6, 8-5, 9-5 and won series 3-1 and there went your yankees. Lol the amount of hate spewed by rival garbage fans is astounding.

Honestly, in reading all the follow-up, Cole wanted to be a Yankee, and they were made him their primary target, and in some ways, all they needed or cared about.

The angels wanted him, and actually bid a higher AAV than the Yankees but the 9th year and Yankees window won out.

If the Angels for Cole 8tnwould have been for like 335 for 9 yrs or more. That means they get nothing else.

This is obviously not plan A, but I think Rendon is awesome. They need consistency in a streaky lineup.

Could very well revert to his 3.9 era with Pittsburg for 36 million a start…Also outside of cole what do yankees have? Injuried severino? Happ with his 4.27 era? German whos second half was awful? Rag arm tanaka with his 4.45 era? Paxton who cant stay healthy? Championship caliber team? so far that rotation looks like dog **** even with cole. Ill take the field over yankees any day.

Clearly, you don’t know much about about baseball or you’re a troll

          1. Fletcher-I believe this may be La Stella since Fletcher may be used as trade. Either way both were near .350 OBP
          2. Ohtani- 20HR average in his first 2 seasons with limited ABs about 2/3 of a season each year. I believe he will hit 4th, Trout will be 2nd and Rendon will be 3rd.
          3. Trout- best player in the game by far
          4. Rendon- another .400+OBP / 1.000+OPS guy hitting behind another one. A doubles machine.
          5. Upton-consistent 30-35 HR guy. Hit 12HRs in 63games last year which is on par with the his season average. Average was way down, but he was injured, One year removed from 30HR season, hardly done
          6. Pujols-Clearly not what we paid for but can still hit 20+ with a 240 average. Better than some still.
          7. Goodwin (Until Adell arrives in May)- Goodwin may not repeat last year., I agree there. Even though Adell is ranked the#5 prospect in baseball, I can see him being the class of the field
          8. Simmons-good defense. Also, a clutch hitter.
          9. Any Catcher-this is an obvious hole, I would like Maldanaldo back, he was decent for us. I want a defensive guy not an offensive guy

Gotta love Arte Moreno if you are an AL West opponent. He wants to make big splashes and then by the 3rd year, he’s calling people to trade and pay a huge chunk of the departing contract. Going to love how this ties the Angels hands on making other moves. I hope it’s a serious overpay, bigger than Cole’s contract with luck.

It’s Arte’s money not a corp’s and he didn’t get it by being stupid. If Billy Eppler can get Renoon on the Angels with Trout then the magnetism begins. And we haven’t even discussed Joe Maddon’s ability to get terms to the WS. If this deal happens there will be a runaway train in the Angels’ direction…….and all courtesy of Gerrit Cole joining the Yanks.

What funny is being a hater that doesnt know facts before speaking. Angels have 70 million to spend this winter, that number goes up to 100 million next year and 130 the following year. Pujols and uptons deal are coming off in 2/3 years respectably. Again even signing rendon to a 34 million per year deal they will have atleast 35 more to spend this year and a another 30 the following year.

Those 2 years turn into 1.5 max because they’ll have to turn around and trade them because they can’t afford to pay them a huge extension. Maybe if they were a WS threat already and it was the last piece to push them over the top..but it isn’t.

Yeah tie up a bunch of money in one player. The Braves aren’t the yankees or the Dodgers.

They have no big contracts besides Freeman, have Acuna and Albies locked in for so many years to come for essentially nothing, and a ton of control for their young pitchers and up and coming outfielders. Rendon would be the perfect player to go big on.

$200-plus million for a soon to be 30 year old player. I know I’m probably in the minority but that’s too much. These deals rarely work out.

The Angels have one of the worst pitching staffs in baseball. How do they fix that? By adding another bat. I guess they plan on trying to win game 9-8

Donaldson will NOT age like Beltre did. He is old and only going to decline, trade for Arenado or Bryant, Daniels blew this

I stated before they would be outbid because they are always outbid for the top FA. Why the hell would their cap be 5 years??

Rendon is a fantastic player and I wish him well, but if Eppler does nothing on the pitching front then his team still goes nowhere. No, I’m not counting Dylan Bundy. The Angels need real help

As an outsider I don’t the the Halos need offense or defense. They lack pitching (Starters, Relievers, and a Closer).

    IM CRYING IF THIS HAPPENS.
BY FAR THE BEST 3rd basemen since Troy Glaus.

Everyone wondering why the heck the angels are dropping another quarter of a billion. They have a wide open space at 3rd. Look at our former 3rd basemen, it’s been abysmal for far too long.

So break the bank this year? Sign Rendon, Ryu, Keuchel, trade for Kluber. Lol. Angel’s are linked to everyone and sign no 1.

Rendon is a darn good hitter, dont get me wrong, but this is a serious misalocation of funds. this team needs starters, and would be better suited spending there.

It’d be awesome to see the Angels have a legit third baseman again but part of me was hoping to see them get into the Arenado bidding

Rendon is better than Arenado whose stats are at least a bit inflated due to playing in Denver and Arenado would cost not just the money (his contract is huge as well) it would also cost Adell and other prospects so trading for Arenado would be a much worse scenario for the Angels than just giving Rendon, the better player anyway, a record deal to break Arenados now former record deal

This is good news for Donaldson, Jung, Wednzel, Rangers and it’s fans. Thank you! Sign Donaldson, Pillar, Chirinos and one of the top 3 starters remaining.
