Multiple teams are showing interest in free-agent outfielder Brett Gardner on a multiyear contract, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. However, Gardner continues to prefer re-signing with the Yankees, according to Heyman, who adds that the two sides are “still talking.” Indeed, as of a few days, Gardner and the Yankees were continuing to negotiate a new contract. Should they reach an agreement, the 36-year-old Gardner would continue as the longest-tenured player on the Yankees’ roster. Until then, he’ll remain as arguably the most appealing center field-capable player on a market which is weak in that regard.
- Sticking with the Yankees, they’ve “engaged” with another of their longtime contributors, free-agent reliever Dellin Betances, Jack Curry of the YES Network tweets. But so have one of their division rivals, the Rays. Wherever Betances ends up, it’s “likely” he’ll sign a one-year contract in an effort to rebuild his value, per Curry. Although the 31-year-old Betances is one of the game’s most successful relievers in recent memory, injuries to the right-hander’s shoulder, lat and Achilles prevented him from making any meaningful contributions in 2019. Nevertheless, MLBTR expects Betances to land a $7MM payday over one year (with the Rays).
- The Athletics are showing interest in Royals southpaw Tim Hill, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. This isn’t the first trade chatter we’ve heard on the 29-year-old, who turned in 39 2/3 innings of 3.63 ERA ball last year. Why the interest from AL contenders in a player that most fans have never heard of? Hill didn’t carry overwhelming overall K/BB numbers (39:13), but did generate a healthy 29.2% K rate against righties while delivering an excellent 57.3% groundball rate. That combination of tools is all the more interesting given the soon-to-be-minted three-batter minimum rule.
- Free-agent infielder Travis Shaw, on the market since the Brewers let him go at the non-tender deadline a week ago, has garnered interest from the Blue Jays, Jon Morosi of MLB.com relays. Additionally, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com relays that the third baseman/second baseman has expressed a willingness to return to the Red Sox, his first MLB team, though it’s unclear if they’re open to a reunion. Shaw, whom the Red Sox traded to the Brewers in December 2017, had a pair of highly productive years in Milwaukee before his numbers fell off a cliff this past season. That caused the Brewers to move on from Shaw, leaving the 29-year-old as a buy-low candidate this winter.

Whether or not the Yankees decide to re-sign either or both Betances or Gardner in my opinion depends on what happens with Gerrit Cole and how much they have to commit to sign Cole.
Old User Name
With Gardner, I think it might come down to length of contract. I don’t see the Yankees going more than one year.
Melchez
Drive that price up… make the Yankees pay through the nose. I love it.
Old User Name
Here’s the sad little troll. What kept you? Did your mom have you in a time out?
toptekjon
Lol
fits65
Mrs. Melch continues to humiliate her little companion by hanging a Brett Gardner photo on the bathroom mirror above his sink.
robluca21
Imagine being that much of a loser you hate the Yankees yet pay so much attention to them
Flapjax55
Totally agree. Pay through the nose and lock up that payroll, Hal. Do it!!
Those us of that hate the Yankees have no choice but to pay attention to them.
frank858
Cole is wanting as close to 8 year $300 million
dlevin11
Sounds fair to make a team that has not won a World Series trophy in 10 years to pay $300 million for the best available free agent starting pitcher.
Begamin
Eh i see Gardner’s signing decision separate Gerrit Cole’s. I dont think they are going to attempt to lock Gardner up long term for a high amount of money, so i dont see why they wouldnt make depth signings for the OF simply because they got their SP. I can see them not being interested in Betances after Cole since they wont need to rely on the bullpen quite as much and Betances’ injuries might prove too risky to bring him back on a big contract that he is probably going to get.
southpaw2153
Cue the apoplectic response from Louiebeans. Derp.
robluca21
Guy has some serious issues . Have no idea why he hates gardner so much
Amanda2019
i guess it cant hurt to try him at second base for the red sox, since our current 2nd base option is that orange cone you see on the highway
bostonbob
Lol, funny

We will take Cano and Diaz back. You pay half Canos salary and you can get fat Danny back. Hope his mommy isn’t on here to tell me to be respective again. Anyway Santana could be another player in the deal. Let’s get it done.
NewYorkSoxFan
Shaw would be a great addition. I can see him platooning at 1st with Chavis and/or Dalbec. These are the kind of cheap buy low deals I’m expecting this offseason although I’m hoping for an exciting salary dump trade, it’s looking less and less likely.
deweybelongsinthehall
Exactly. He also proved already his stroke can go yard in Fenway which is not easy to right center. If they move on from Moreland, he seems the perfect lefty unless they resign a Holt. I like Shaw better at first but Hot’s overall versatility.
NewYorkSoxFan
That versatility is less valuable with the 26th roster spot being added. I’d still love to see Brock return tho.
deweybelongsinthehall
Not sure I agree. I thought they’re allowing 13 men staffs. That sill only leaves 4 reserves. Even if 12, some may look to have three catchers so you can pinch hit for them.
moody
Shaw would be a great addition…unless he hits .160 again
dobsonel
I say Betances signs a 3 year deal for 18 to 21 mil.
kc38
0% chance
Yankeepride88
I don’t think Betances would sign that deal. With a healthy season he could easily make $10-12 mil per year.
stratcrowder
That comment missed the plate by several inches, much like a lot of Betances pitches.
fair-critic
not with the Yankees. maybe baltimore would try that malarkey.
TeddyBallgameYazJimEd
1yr..$6M with $2M of incentives and $1M buyout of a $8M option.
miltpappas
Red Sox should go for it. Two years left on his contract. If he regains even half of his previous productivity, it gives them the ability to comfortably trade Betts.
dynamite drop in monty
Lol
nymetsking
Who’s contract? All mentioned except for Hill are FAs.
ShieldF123
Believe he meant two years arb left for Shaw. If he signs a one year deal he’s controlled in 2021 as well
kc38
A Rays bullpen of Castillo, Anderson, Betances and Pagan. Sit down lol
Philly A's
Tim Hill sounds like an Oakland A already, no one knows him. The A’s want him for that groundball rate, having 3/4 of an amazing infield behind him will make him look even better.
krillin89
Cool Story on Tim Hill. I went to watch the Royals when they visited the O’s. I got tired of the teen couple making out sitting right beside me so I went and stood behind/above the visiting bullpen. A fan walks up beside me and says “hey man” to Tim Hill and then they start having a conversation. They were high school buddies and they even made plans to get lunch while Tim was in town. I thought it was cool because it showed that professional athletes are regular people, just like us.
bobtillman
They put their pants on the same way you do.
Of course, their pants cost a heck of a lot more,.
Samuel
Or as candidate JB says:
“They put their pants on just like us. One arm at a time”.

Shaw to the Blue Jays doesn’t make a lot of sense with they players they already have on the roster at second (Biggio) and third (Guerrero). They also have Drury who can play those positions & Urena & Espinal on the 40 man roster. There is a bigger need for a first baseman for the Jays than another second or third baseman.
firegibby
Makes sense to dump Drury.
Eatdust666
He actually has some experience at first base.
jimmertee
The Jays already have an elite first basemen in Guerrero. He won’t last at 3rd regardless of his diet and workout regimen. He doesn’t have the skill to be their consistently.
Drury can play an excellent 3rd base.
robluca21
Yeah vlad is not good at 3rd.
its_happening
Drury is Japan material. He’s one guy the Jays need to ship out if they are contemplating a Travis Shaw signing.
fair-critic
Gardy yes, he’s a face of reliability and a great Yankee. Betances, anything is too much. players like Voit cant get shafted on pay to compensate for high dollar pitching contracts.
its_happening
Seven OFs, plenty of INFs, don’t see room for Shaw in Toronto. Not yet anyway.
TheBoatmen
We all know Vlad will end up a first some time. But a lottery ticket in Shaw and trade him at the deadline. Nothing link the ALE to get you out of a funk….unless you’re a pitcher.
jimmertee
Shaw stunk last year. Lottery ticket is right. Avoid.
rob t
I would love to see Cashman her very creative and trade Stanton and his albatross contract away, then everything else would fall in place.
Ashtem
Good luck with that

On a one year deal, Dellin may as well return to NY and build his value in a familiar place. 1 year/$10MM?
robluca21
I think gardy will get 1 year 10 to 12 million with a team option for a 2nd season at the same rate with 2 million dollar buyout
Louiebeans
Hopefully it’s not with the Yankees!
Chris Giarraputo
If both Gardy and Delin will take a 1 year contract I cannot see them going anywhere.,if Delin wants a lucrative deal what better place to get exposure AND PS experience and a ring then in NY. Delin is going to go to Tampa bay? Leave his home city and chance at WS plus national exposure. If the Yankees sign Cole to close to $300 mil (I feel that 300 is a number organizations don’t want to cross for a pitcher as then position players who play 4/5x as many games will skyrocket). Then the CBT is not in there minds.
I think anyone who has been paying attention the last few years knows big changes are coming in next CBA. And the penalties ya JD would occur was in an article here recently if they blow past 3rd tier. It’s nothing. And Yankees FO knows they NEED a WS to continue marketing their brand as 1 of the tops in the world. To hear Hal say he is will to go over CBT shows they couldn’t win under the CBT so after years of thrifty spending its time to open the flood gates.
My opinion. I still think they will add another RP besides a Delin with the new 3 batter/finish inning rule next year. They can’t throw Loisaga, Adams, tarpley out their, the get rocked and can’t remove them b4 they let up 2,3,4+ runs as they easily do.
If Cole is going for $300+ and Rendon is still on market, I really think they will spread the $ around as Rendon wants a shorter contract. But, I don’t think anyone- especially Cali teams don’t touch $300 mil. It’s pure stupidity for Angels and Dodgers are like yanks- don’t like 6+ year deals. Plus they need changes To lineup being ousted 2 out of 3 WS.

For the LOVE OF THE MAN ABOVE THE CLOUDS!
Go Go Go GO to another team! I hope you sign with another team and end your .220 era with the Yankees and 1.98 Post Season average.
Begamin
funny, i know someone who has a 1.98 IQ in this comment section
Louiebeans
Not funny when you see at least 20 other comments that they don’t want Gardner back either.
You either wanna win or you wanna watch this post season dud again?
Me I wanna move o.n……… Yankees don’t need a 10 million man in the 9th hole at age 37.
Louiebeans
Has Gardner signed with another team yet? :drooling from the mouth:
Yankees don’t need a 9th hole hitter!
