Avisail Garcia has been a popular figure in the first weeks of free agency, and his list of suitors includes Garcia’s most recent organization. “There is interest, and engagement” from the Rays in a reunion with Garcia, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times writes, updating his own report from late October that originally detailed the potential for another contract between the two sides. Garcia was a nice low-cost buy for Tampa last offseason, as the outfielder inked a one-year, $3.5MM deal with the Rays and hit .282/.332/.464 with 20 homers (good for a 111 OPS+ and 112 wRC+) while posting slightly above-average hard-hit ball numbers and defensive metrics in right field.
This solid but unspectacular season might keep Garcia within Tampa Bay’s rather limited price range, as MLBTR predicted only a two-year, $12MM deal for Garcia this winter. A bigger question could be where Garcia fits into a Rays outfield that already has Tommy Pham, Kevin Kiermaier, and Austin Meadows, though the right-handed hitting Garcia is a nice complement amidst lefty swingers like Meadows and first base/DH options like Ji-Man Choi and Nate Lowe.
Here’s more from around the AL East…
- While Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia intends to resume his career in 2020 after multiple knee surgeries, “the most optimistic projection for Pedroia would be playing for the Sox in late May or June,” Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe hears from multiple sources. Pedroia has appeared in only nine games over the last two seasons, and with so much uncertainty around his availability, second base is a clear area of need for the team this winter.
- Both Abraham and WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford were surprised by Boston’s decision to waive left-hander Brian Johnson earlier this week, though Johnson remained with the Red Sox (and outrighted off the 40-man roster) after going unclaimed. Johnson is also out of minor league options, which dimmed his value to other teams, Abraham hears from an evaluator. The timing of the move may have been tactical on the club’s part, Bradford notes, as Johnson was waived not long after other teams had set their 40-man rosters in advance of the Rule 5 Draft, and thus didn’t have the space to spare on a southpaw who pitched well in 2017-18 before struggling last year. The transaction caught Johnson himself by surprise, as he told Bradford, though “in the grand scheme of things I’m just not on the 40-man. My goals don’t change. I have the same goal going into spring training, fighting for a job either in the bullpen or starting.”
- Some of the offseason’s early moves have seemingly removed two potential Orioles trade partners for Trey Mancini or Mychal Givens, the Baltimore Sun’s Jon Meoli writes. Mancini could have been a possible long-term piece for a White Sox team that appears ready to start competing, but Chicago’s extension with Jose Abreu and signing of Yasmani Grandal (as a part-time first baseman and DH, to go with his catching duties) would seem to limit Mancini to the outfield for the Sox, a less-than-ideal defensive fit. As for Givens, the Braves had interest in the right-hander at the trade deadline but have now addressed their bullpen needs by signing Will Smith and re-signing Chris Martin and Darren O’Day.

Baltimore needs to begin capitalizing on trade pieces when they can. Watching them hold on to players like Mancini who’s raking and letting go of pieces like Villar for nothing is just painful to watch.
Christopher_Oriole
Agreed. I can’t believe they just basically cut Villar…but yet they’re still paying and playing Chris Davis. Unbelievable.
dimitrios in la
Totally fine with cutting Villar. No reason I can see to have kept him.
aamatho18
He was a 4 win player. That’s why.
ASapsFables
Because 4 WAR players who are 28, can play an adequate 2B/SS, switch-hit with some BA/SLG ability, leadoff, steal 40+ bases and might earn a $10.5MM arbitration salary are totally worthless. lol
Unless Villar is Milton Bradley 2.0 in the Orioles clubhouse releasing him was totally unwarranted, even for a rebuilding club.
bhambrave
Is that you, Mr. Elias?
HalosHeavenJJ
Exactly. And just because a market for him had yet to develop, one almost certainly would have at some point.
jbigz12
Aaron loves Villar.
I’m willing to bet Villar is a 2-2.5 Win player this year. He’ll be some contending teams part time 2B/ super utility guy. No chance he sniffs anywhere close to 10.5 MM a year either.
16 of his 24 Hrs came in OPACY and all his underlying stats scream regression. He’s also an extremely poor defensive SS; which is the position he’d be playing in Baltimore.
Not a loss. I’ll be happy if we sign Jose Iglesias or another D minded SS who will help the young pitchers. And of course at a fraction of the cost.
Strike Four
Exactly, the Orioles front office blew it SO hard on this. Villar broke out in a big way last year, he’s a star player. In spring trading after injuries, his trade value is better than what the Orioles got here.
ASapsFables
I’d love Jonathan Villar on the Cubs over Addison Russell. When Theo finally admits that Whit Merrifield isn’t coming to Wrigley Field anytime soon he should take a flyer on Villar who would be an ideal candidate to fill the leadoff hitting spikes of Dexter Fowler. The Cubs have had a black hole at the #1 spot ever since Fowler departed following their 2016 championship. I can’t think of any current FA who could fill that role any better than Villar, at least until young Nico Hoerner is deemed fully ready to assume the responsibility.
jbigz12
Jonathan Villar is a “star player”
Yeeesh
jbigz12
And look that’s a fine opinion. I persaonlly don’t believe he’s a good option at leadoff hitter. The cubs have been shoving square pegs in round holes at that position for awhile now. So if they want to take the gamble, sure.
But that has nothing to do with the Orioles non tendering him being a bad decision at all. No team has claimed him. He’s on outright waivers and no Major League Baseball team wants to offer him arbitration. Why the hell would a rebuilding 60 win Major League Baseball team want to keep that around? You’re going to pray a guy who looks like a regression candidate—-improves? Improves to the point where he has enough trade value to justify the 10.5 million dollars you just spent?
That sounds asinine to me when you could go out and sign 3-4 reclamation candidates for a little bit more. ID wager that your odds of getting a more impactful return improve significantly.
Bashing the O’s on this is a small picture look at best.
davemlaw
Agreed. I’d love to see if he can play CF, that would make him even more valuable.
Pork Chop Pough
Do you understand how contracts work? They’re legally obligated to continue paying Chris Davis (whether he plays or not). There was no such obligation to keep paying for Villar’s services.
bhambrave
Chris is a sunk cost. Not only is he costing them money, he’s also costing them a roster spot. If they cut him, they could pick up a better player as a Rule 5.
Strike Four
Or just play Mancini or Mountcastle or anyone, really.
Dylan Bundy for Josh Naylor anyone?
mstrchef13
The O’s couldn’t find a trade partner for Villar, which means none of the other 31 teams thought he was worth $10M next year either.. This was purely a financial decision. The likely thinking was that if he were to play next season with the Orioles he would not be offered a QA, so there will be no compensation for him. Therefore, better to let him go for nothing now rather than to pay him $10M and let him go for nothing after next season.
Regarding Mancini, they aren’t “holding on to” him. Rather, no other team is willing to offer something for a 28 year old RH hitting 1B/RF/DH that is equal in value to what he means to the team right now, given his team-friendly salary situation.

Avisail Garcia was an enigma with the White Sox. He was considered a 5-tool young player with the Tigers when the ChiSox acquired him relatively cheaply because he came with serious clubhouse ‘baggage’ due to a domestic incident involving a star player’s wife which actually manifested into a dugout brawl with a different MVP player.
Garcia fit the profile a young stud player, big, strong and very athletic for his size. Just watching him during pre-game drills and occasionally during the course of a game it was obvious he could hit the ball hard and far, run, cover ground and throw well enough to play RF. For any number of reasons including numerous injuries, Garcia could never put all his talent together at the same time. He finally has a breakout 2017 season with the White Sox in his 5th season when he was still just 26. He put up a 4.6 bWAR but it was driven by an unsustainable .392 BABIP.
Even with all the raw talent, Garcia never hit more than 19 HR’s or stole more than 7 bases during his 6 year White Sox stay. He also never registered a single season with a positive dWAR in RF. The White Sox finally non-tendered him last offseason with the Rays signing him for a FA salary substantially below his expected arbitration figure. Garcia had a decent 2019 with the Rays that produced his first 20 HR and 10 SB season but his 2.0 bWAR and 1.8 fWAR was still nothing to write home about.

@AaronSapoznik
Great post on Garcia.
For the past few days you’ve been indignant over the Orioles letting Jonathan Villar go. They tried to get something for him. Apparently no one offered them anything, because if they had the Orioles would surely have taken it.
(Not to worry – every year a rebuilding team lets a veteran go and a group of fans get indignant; ultimately stating that the FO is unjust and that the owner is just putting money in his pocket.)
I would suggest that Villar’s pattern is not unlike what you noted about Garcia. Overall he has a 12-plus WAR in 7 seasons. Since he was over 4 in 2019, that means that in the 6 previous seasons he had a WAR of around 8. We could say that he had a “breakout” season in 2016 when he slashed even better then he did in 2019. (Keep in mind that the juiced ball inflated most players slugging in 2019.) In 2017 Villar fell out badly. I don’t know if he was injured or not. But the Brewers stuck with him in 2018 where he had a bit of a bounceback, then traded him to the Orioles in mid-2018.
I’ve read Milwaukee fans state that Villar has had run in’s with umps and other players. He also has a rep for doing dumb things on the field at times. Not sure that Garcia is seen that way. Nevertheless, it seems that there is a parallel between the 2 players – both are questionable defensively as well.
So since you are irate about the rebuilding Orioles releasing Villar this year instead of paying him, I assume you were equally irate when the rebuilding White Sox released Garcia last year rather then paying him.
ASapsFables
Your adjectives depicting my opinion regarding the Orioles release of Jonathan Villar are a bit overboard. I’m not an Oriole fans so I’m neither ‘indignatant’ or ‘irate’ about what occurred.
If I was a fan of the Orioles I might have pulled more punches. I would also be more familiar with Villar’s play and standing on the team above and beyond his stats and what I have read in media accounts. If I saw him play on an everyday basis like Avisail Garcia and Addison Russell I could very well have a different opinion of him.
Btw: Thanks for the props on Garcia.
Vandals Took The Handles
@ AaronSapoznik;
Well, you’ve written multiple posts the past few days questioning what the Orioles are doing.
My experience watching is that a team will keep veterans early in a rebuild to set an example for players coming on board. They usually clear it with the veterans, making them aware that the next 3-4 years will be difficult. The Braves did it with Freddie Freeman and Nick Markakis. The Royals are currently doing it with Salvador Perez and Whit Merrifield. It’s possible that Villar made it clear that at age 28 he wasn’t good with that, or that the Orioles felt after watching him for 1-1/2 years that he’s not the sort of veteran they want young guys to view as a role model. Personally, I believe it’s the latter based on his past actions in MLB. And I believe that it it a far greater consideration than any stats he put up in 2019.
ASapsFables
I’m hardly alone with questioning Villar’s release. In fact, when news broke of the Orioles placing him on waivers a few days ago Steve Adams of this very site expressed similar sentiments concerning Baltimore’s wisdom with the move. If Villar’s release was due to a clubhouse situation that changes the narrative, something I also suggested in my comment.
We’ll all find out soon enough how the market views Villar as a player and as a personal match with their own rosters. The teams negotiating a trade with the Orioles prior to his release could have also sensed some desperation on Baltimore’s part. Why surrender assets when you can just sign him as a FA next week, possibly even for a salary well below his expected arb number? Villar will also have input into his next destination, something that would not have occurred with a trade. If he is a player who is more adamant about winning than a bigger pay day that could also become more apparent in the coming days and weeks.

It’s highly unlikely that Trey Mancini “could have been a possible long-term piece” for the White Sox regardless of their Jose Abreu and Yasmani Grandal commitments.
Abreu was never going anywhere and will be in the White Sox primary 1B until top prospect Andrew Vaughn is ready for prime time sometime in 2021. When that happens, Abreu will transition to more time at DH. Abreu and Vaughn are hardly the only internal options for sharing time at 1B and DH either. Defensively challenged C Zack Collins will caddy for Abreu at 1B in 2020 while also garnering some PA’s at DH versus RHP. The White Sox also have an abundance of candidates down on the farm with recent high Draft picks like Gavin Sheets and Jake Burger to say nothing of slugging C/DH Yermin Mercedes who was just added to their 40-man roster to keep him from being Rule 5 eligible on December 12th.
Aside from those players the possibility remains that slugging LF Eloy Jimenez could eventually slide into the 1B/DH role if his outfield defense doesn’t improve in the the next couple of years. Adding poor fielding Mancini to the outfield mix would be a cruel and unusual punishment not only for the White Sox pitching staff but also for elite CF prospect Luis Robert. who will make his debut this season.
mohoney
Eloy Jimenez is never going to move to 1B. I don’t know why people keep saying this. He will stumble and bumble his way through a few more bad seasons in LF, with the “he’s improving out there!” tagline tiding people over until Abreu’s mystifying 3rd year is complete.
ASapsFables
I’m sure that there are plenty of ‘experts’ who said the same for any number of defensively challenged players who eventually moved to 1B or DH. Clearly the White Sox will roll with 23-year old Jimenez in LF until they can’t. They have too many other options at DH/1B now and his bat has to play somewhere so LF it is.
We do know that Jimenez is a hard worker and that his manager Rick Renteria has all the confidence in the world that he will become more than adequate in LF. Jimenez is actually going to continue playing winter ball in his native Dominican Republic this offseason with the primary focus of improving his outfield play.
That said, Jimenez certainly has the tools to be a solid 1B at some point down the road. He is a big target and has a long reach at 6’4″. He also possesses decent enough athleticism spreading his 205 lbs weight over his tall frame. His arm would have to be plus for the position considering he was a RF as a Cubs prospect before the White Sox moved him to LF as he continued to grow into his body. Nobody in Chicago wants to see Jimenez at 1B anytime soon but to flatly say he “is never going to move to 1B” is silly.
I’d venture a guess that if Jimenez utilized this winter and next spring just taking reps at 1B he would be better than Jose Abreu and actually best Frank Thomas’ defense in short order. I’d say the same of Tim Anderson if the White Sox ever decide to move him off of SS and stick him in CF or RF.

What is shocking is how so many people themselves were “shocked” that brian Johnson lasted as long as he did in Boston. The guy had little command, topped out at 90-91mph with his FB, threw absolute junk with his so called “4 pitch mix” and the only team he really ever seemed to have any success against during his on and off again career was the NYY.
Johnson was another wasted 1st round pick by Boston on a guy with a big body and NO FB. thank goodness that trait went out the door after 2013 and the Trey Ball waste fiasco.

The Orioles have to pull the trigger for trading their remaining assets. They should trade Mancini for the best possible return they can get. Would love to see Mancini in a Braves uniform if the deal is right
ASapsFables
Where would you hide him defensively? The Braves already have a stud at 1B in Freddie Freeman. They have Ronald Acuna penciled in as a corner and re-signed a way better glove in Nick Markakis to the other. Mancini can’t play CF where the Braves still have a fine defender in Ender Inciarte.
If the Braves upgrade in the OF it will be a trade for somebody who can also play adequate or plus defense, not a butcher like Mancini. Atlanta has the prospect capital to trade for a stud rental in Mookie Betts if they really want to win the offseason and become a co-favorite with the Dodgers to capture the NL pennant. Mancini should be a hard pass this offseason.
krillin89
He would be a huge upgrade over Duvall/Markakis. The Braves already have solid defense at the other 2 outfield spots. They can take the hit in defensively. He could also give Freddie a break.
However, I don’t totally disagree with you. But, adding him would give the Braves options to move either Drew Waters or Christian Pache for top tier controllable rotation help
ASapsFables
Despite Trey Mancini’s deservedly bad reputation with his defense he won’t be traded by the Orioles without a substantial return going back to Baltimore. His offense and 3 arb-years of team control guarantees that.
Couldn’t the Braves add a better OF option than Mancini with the type of assets required to satisfy the Orioles. There are more than a few teams with OF surplus who might be willing to trade with Atlanta including the Dodgers, Mets and Rangers. How much more would it take for the Braves to pry Mitchell Haniger away from the Mariners than acquiring Mancini from the Orioles? If Atlanta is that desperate for another outfielder they could turn their attention to the FA market and just buy one, no? Same goes for adding a SP.

ASapsFables
Yes. Just what the White Sox need, another defensively challenged right-handed hitter slugger who whiffs a lot and can only play LF and 1B, along with being a DH. Hard pass!
Btw: Zack Collins will be the White Sox 26th man. He’s also slugger who whiffs a lot but at least he can be a #3 catcher, backup 1B and DH AND hits left-handed.
Hack Wilson
MaCann is backup Collins doesn’t have a job.
Grandal’s is DH when not starting.
Trey Mancini is a great hitter who has raked the NY Yankees. He can play ok outfield as good as Castillonos at a fraction of the cost. A platoon in RF with Garcia sub at 1B and then Mostly just hitting, getting on base and being a great clubhouse man.
Collins is learning from Grandal and has been since he was 15 years old. That will continue now since James McCann has a one year deal 5.4 million.
Mercedes is a better hitter Zelba a better defense.
Collins may be the trade piece along with prospects to Baltimore for Trey Mancini.
