The Minnesota Twins outrighted injured reliever Sam Dyson from their major league roster, and the 31-year-old reliever rejected a minor-league assignment to become a free agent, per La Velle E. Neal III of the Star Tribune.
The move was largely expected, as the native Floridian was set to make around $6.4MM through the arbitration process if the Twins tendered him a contract. Dyson had shoulder surgery in late September and is expected to miss all of the 2020 season.
Dyson was one of the Giants’ many sought-after relievers at the trade deadline, and the Twins surrendered a trio of prospects to get him. It wasn’t the most successful of deadline moves, unfortunately, as the sinkerballer managed just a 7.15 ERA over 12 outings for the Twinkies. The gaudy ERA is a little misleading, as it’s largely due to a disastrous first pair of outings, which nonetheless colored the rest of his Minnesota tenure. After a short stint on the injured list, he returned to post a 2.53 ERA over his final 10 appearances as a Twin.
Considering the injury, Dyson doesn’t figure to latch on with a big-league club until 2021, though given the difficulties contenders had building bullpens this season, it remains a possibility some team could look at Dyson for a rehab contract such as the Cubs have done with Kendall Graveman and Drew Smyly in each of the past two offseasons.

It’s official: The Twins got hosed on that deadline deal.
leefieux
They still made out better than my Buccos on the Archer deal.
mlb1225
To be fair, it’s not like this was ovbisously coming.
jd396
Hosed by whoever ran the almighty real world random number generator, yes. Giants got lucky, twins got burned.
5TUNT1N
RNGesus!
mfm420
well, after getting burned by the twins in the piezynski deal back in 03, giants finally got their payback (sarcasm, but figured why not make the joke?)
pustule bosey
Yeah but they seem to be happy with Adrianza so it is fine
rashomon
Thanks for the memories!
fletch
Great trade Falvey, your not allowed to make any more deals.
wordonthestreet
Is that because a good baseball executive is supposed to be perfect on all trades Fletch?
Seems to me like he is doing a great job with the Twins.
monymgr
I agree, the Twins have a top front office along with a very good field manager. I see positive transactions and results coming to this team/organization ..
gocards2849
Yes he has been great other than this deal. He got the twins to playoffs I would be happy
LordD99
Tough timing and tough injury for Dyson. Unlike TJS, the success rate on his type of shoulder surgery is spotty, and even those who return suffer some loss in effectiveness. Hopefully he beats the odds.
antibelt
Giants should consider a 2 year deal. We see many guys now get signed to a very small amount year one, and a discounted rate for year two.
bravesfan
I’d imagine this could be very close to the end of his career. I doubt anyone will sign him for next year full well knowing he’s gonna be out for the entire season. Then he will likely sign a minor league deal somewhere and have a big uphill battle to get back on a major league roster. By then he could be roughly 33… I think he’ll just kinda be forgotten about and 3 years from now we will see a trade rumor article that says he retires
jd396
In the world of relief pitching, you usually get a second chance if you can come back to anything close to your old level of performance.
antibelt
33 is not that old for a relief pitcher with a good sinker-especially one of the better relief pitchers in baseball. Rodney is over forty for crying out loud.
brat922
That is cr@p. Dyson has a lot more in the tank & will do very well. Twins and their fans will choke on their words in 2020.
Baseball 1600
Dyson was one of the best relievers in baseball for the first half of 2019, so I’d imagine someone would take a chance on a two year deal.
brat922
Dang right!! And I hope it’s the Giants. Again. #roja #forevergiant
phantomofdb
Can we NOT use the derogatory “twinkies” in an article about the twins?
nymetsking
Derogatory? Twinkies survived the zombie apocalypse. That’s bad @$$.
antibelt
Lol, that does sound a little unprofessional.
aussiegiants53
In a few days time… “Giants to sign Sam Dyson” haha wow! I almost feel bad for the Twins
brat922
As a Giants fan, I also hope we resign Dyson. I was upset when he was traded though I get baseball. It was a bad start to a guy no doubt upset to leave the SFG and reeling in a bit of shock. His ERA was stellar after injury list stint for Twins. They are nuts to let him go!! And the Giants nor fans knew anything about his arm/shoulder soreness. Such BS. They are a class act and wouldn’t try to pull something over in a trade!
champion1701
Dyson lied to both organisations.
Yukon Corn
Nuts for letting him go? Did you read the article? He will not pitch until at least 2021. If he was signed it would have been nuts!

New Angels closer

Discarded like a piece of meat. It’s also why I don’t get too upset when Cole wears a Boras hat after the Astros lost in the World Series.
They are all pieces of meat, which is fine, It’s the nature of the game.
antibelt
Why would they pay him 6.4 million next year if he’s not going to pitch??? That’s why we’ve been commenting that some team, i.e. Giants, should sign him to a lower guaranteed 2 year deal.
macstruts
No one in their right mind would pay him that much money for not playing. He got hurt on the job and then he’s discarded like rancid beef. I believe both statements are true.
I don’t mind teams doing that, That’s the nature of the game. I also don’t mind Cole wearing a Boris hat.
I do mind players taking PEDs or not hustling. Some people don’t. Different things bother different people.
C-Daddy
This guy’s claim to fame will always be that he gave up the bat flip home run to Jose Bautista in the 2015 ALDS.
Dorothy_Mantooth
Would make sense for Tampa to sign him to a 2yr. / $6M deal, equally split at 3 & 3. Year 1 is a wash and they have more than enough cap space to eat that figure. Then in Year 2, they either have a key piece of their bullpen for a discounted rate of $3M, or they have a VERY valuable trade chip (provided that he comes back healthy of course). These are the types of deals Tampa does under the radar all the time and allows them to be contenders with 1/3 of the payroll the big market teams have.

Time for the Twins to focus on signing a rotation…
First priority: pick up option of Martin Perez. Even if you don’t keep him in the rotation, you aren’t going to pick up a starter of the same quality for the same money.
2nd Priority:.Re-sign Jake Odorrizi. Jake wants to come back, and is the best option out there not named Gerritt Cole or Stephen Strasburg..
3rd priority: Make a run a Gerrit Cole. The Twins have the money, and have the position players. The window is open for the position players is right now. But the Twins need a rotation.
4th priority; Try to sign Madison Baumgartner. The Mad Bum is not what he was, but is still better than much of what is available, and should be affordable.
5th Priority: Take a whack at Zach. Zach Wheeler is not as good as Jake Odorizzi, Cole or Stratsburg, but could be a useful part of a rotation, depending on who else the Twins sign.
6th Priority: Get smiley on Wade Miley. A back of the rotation signing, but better than completely striking out, if higher priorities fail.
7th Priority: Give a nodda to Michael Pineda. Pineda is ineligible for the first 39 games.. If you can bring big Mike back cheap enough, Pineda could be a rotation option if someone else stumbles or gets injured.
Hopefully, if the Twins can land half the priorities, along with Jose Berrios and the minor league prospects, the Twins can paste together a rotation that could be competitive in 2020 and beyond without blowing up the Bomba Squad or draining the farm with trades.
nentwigs
Twins should take this guy to court. He knowingly withheld his injury from the Giants, who given his declining performance and contract status traded him to the Twins. The League refuses to take any kind of action and research indicates the Giants are clean.
So WHO is to blame?
Dyson himself.
Isn’t there some kind of civil charge to be pursued to recover the money directly paid to Dyson AS WELL AS punitive damages for the loss to the Twins organization for the 3 players traded to the Giants to acquire Dyson???
