The Kansas City Royals announced the signing of infielder Matt Reynolds to a minor league contract. Reynolds has previously appeared in the majors with the Mets and Nationals.
Reynolds, 29 in December, was a 2nd round draft choice of the New York Mets back in 2012. He appeared sparingly for the Mets in 2016 and 2017 as a superutility player, appearing everywhere but catcher, pitcher, and centerfield.
The Nationals purchased his contract prior to the 2018 season, but never cracked the regular rotation in Washington. He was designated for assignment last winter to make room on the 40-man roster after the signing of Brian Dozier. The Oklahoma native spent all of last season with Triple-A Fresno, putting together a strong season hitting .295/.401/.521 with 16 home runs across 449 plate appearances.
The Royals are buying low here to build some organizational depth. Reynolds’ defensive versatility helps his chances of getting an opportunity at the big league level, but he’s more-than-likely on-hand for depth in case of injury. For his big-league career, Reynolds owns a .223/.295/.340 line across 240 plate appearances.

He was very bad for the Mets, but famously hit in the middle of the lineup with John Mayberry JR, when everyone was hurt.

Ur thinking of Eric Campbell

I liked Reynolds when he was Met.
Oxford Karma
Oh man. You are right. Good call. The Mets cycle through so many AAAA players when things go off the rails!

Blast from the past!
John Mayberry Jr!
Man, whatever happened
to him!
MrMet33
Reynolds wasn’t a good pick when the Mets took him – very low ceiling. He’s exactly what everyone thought he would be – ceiling if a utility player that is more likely a man or league burn out.

(That’s the Royals making a move in free agency right off the bat!)
*has instant memories of the Chris Owings signing before last season*

Now that’s a great bit.

Smh, it’s November. Signings these days now start later. Even still, they’re in the middle of a rebuild. Why surrender crucial draft picks signing a premium player. Hopefully window starts to open 2021-2022
DarkSide830
i wouldnt throw myself off a bridge over a minor league signing, or even a rebuilding team overpaying a guy for a single year in hopes he bounces back.
eyeamthelaw
I don’t know why you are upset. We are obviously winning 100+ games on this signing alone!

Royals are not going to be trading or signing any one big I look for them to stand pat and cut back

Tickets will be cheap at the K in ’20.

Great seats available!
That’s why I loved seeing
the Astros in person a
few years ago when they
were terrible. At least
their opponent was watchable (most of the time) and a fun ballpark experience. Even the cheap seats at Minute Maid park seem close in.

Lay off the Enter/Return key. We can read full sentences. Be considerate and leave some space for others.

OK sure. Did not know that was a problem!

What makes you think that?
DarkSide830
good to know Reynolds’s AAA numbers were “strong” while guys like Eddie Rosario apparently had mediocre seasons. SMH.
Bradley0327
Rosario barely posted a .300 OBP. Reynolds had over .400 OBP last year. So yeah; he did have a strong AAA season.

Reynolds has ability and could end up becoming a rather solid major league utility players for years to come. You never know, he could be one of those players who returns to the majors and becomes impact player.
It has lot to do with plate approach, hitting to all fields and keeping his swing compact. His season in AAA seems to have reigned in some of the problems that impacted him in the majors.
He’s not flashy defensively, but is fundamentally sound, solid athlete and runs fine. Good no-risk, high reward signing by the Royals.. Expect him to get another opportunity in the majors in 2020.

He’s *Reynolds) primarily a SS . Kc is notability thin in that area. Bobby Whitt won’t be ready for at least 2 years. and They are using him as insurance, in case Mondi isin;t ready, and they move Lopez to SS, and Whitt back to 2nd. Also starting to see more and more reports that KC may make a run at Gordo, other than let him retire. .In my book let him retire he frees up a roster spot. But IF KC is on the push to bring him back, thats smells of trouble…to me.

I don’t see a problem with Gordon coming back. He’s really not holding anyone back and will likely sign in the 7-8M range. If Yost were still around he’d no doubt pencil him in LF everyday but that’s not likely to be the plan with him now. As for the money…the new owner is a long-time Royals fan. Maybe he simply wants Gordon on his team for at least one year.
I’m ok with the Reynolds signing. We need to look at cheap options. Arteaga and Cheslor aren’t the answers for utility players. Of course…I was ok with the Owings signing last November. Then the “play everyday” talk started and Yost stubbornly clung to it.

HI thunderroad19:
Maybe I should clarify my comment, I didn’t mean for it to sound if gordon is coming back that’s trouble, I tried to say, IF the push is on to bring Gordon back, there “something” they aren’t telling us, that’s the trouble I was referring to,Gordo is Certainly preferable to say Merrifield in LF, which I know has been discussed. before. Truth be told we really don’t have a “True”LF in the system that’s MLB ready., and I think DM know s that. Least I hope he does. So IF they have to bring Gordo back I’m ok with it. But on the other side of the coin he had a good year, let the man retire and go out with his gold glove and be happy. he had 2 bad year back to back, let him go out a winner.
As for the Reynolds signing, I too am ok with that, I truly hope he has as much success this coming year as he did last year, @ Fresino.

luckily This is just a minor league contract and won’t affect the 40 man roster. And plus he might even just be for AAA Omaha. We are thin in the infielder department. If Mondesi has any kind of setbacks in his rehab or ability Nicky lopez will Play shortstop for a short time.
