The Rockies have announced a minor-league deal with infielder Eric Stamets. He’ll receive an invitation to MLB Spring Training.
Stamets, 28, was pressed into duty early in 2019 by the Indians but struggled mightily in brief MLB action. He went down on strikes in half of his 48 plate appearances and managed just a pair of hits. Stamets was ultimately dropped from the 40-man and allowed to depart at the end of the season.
The Rockies can’t expect much offense. Through over one thousand Triple-A plate appearances, Stamets carries a .230/.299/.379 slash line. But he’s obviously valued for his glovework at shortstop and ought to function as depth or perhaps challenge for a utility role in camp.
This guy makes Paul Janish look like Mark McGwire at the plate.
Haven’t heard “Soft J” mentioned in a long time. Always liked him!
and Mario Mendoza look like Barry Bonds
And Pete Kozma look like…still Pete Kozma
^^^Stan wins.
One can guarantee that the Indians won’t miss his bat. And even though his reputation is that of a good fielder, he wasn’t exactly flawless in the field during the time he filled in for Lindor early in 2019.
Someone should publish an article about which teams match up best as trade partners. I think Col matches up best with my Phils. If I was Kelntak I’d be all over Trevor Story and Jon Gray. They can afford to take on Wade Davis, Bryan Shaw and/or Jake McGee and Col would love to shed those contracts. Instead of spending 300mil on Cole or 250mil on Rendon I think that is where they should spend their “stupid money”. Taking on a bad contract in order to acquire a superstar. Eovaldi/Betts, Darvish/Bryant, W. Davis/J. Gray, & to a lesser extent Z. Cosart/ A. Heaney or I. Kennedy/W.Merrifield
Do it
Single A batter with a big league glove
more like a beer league batter
Mmmm, beer batter…
I really wanted to see Stamets succeed. He grew up an Indians fan, and he seemed like a good guy based on interviews and things like that.
But it’s a results-oriented business, and he can’t hit. Even if the Indians trade Lindor, they can find a much better replacement.
Sounds like a typical Rockies acquisition.
