The Phillies have announced a wide slate of roster moves today, setting the team up for another fascinating offseason. In particular, the club has shorn a big chunk of its 2019 pitching staff from the roster in one fell swoop.
Philadelphia declined club options over righty Jared Hughes, righty Pat Neshek, and lefty Jason Vargas. Also heading to the open market are five players were outrighted: infielder Phil Gosselin and righties Jerad Eickhoff, Mike Morin, Blake Parker, and Edubray Ramos.
That’s a big chunk of innings going onto the open market despite ongoing control rights. To be exact, the Phils are kicking 219 2/3 of their frames from 2019 back into free agency. It’s hard to argue with any of the decisions.
Hughes was solid as a late-season gap-filler, but didn’t rate at a $3MM price tag for 2020. He’ll get a $250K buyout on the way out. Neshek takes $750K with him instead of pitching for $7MM. That’s no surprise after he was limited to 18 frames due to injury. Vargas is due a $2MM buyout instead of a $8MM salary; the Phils evidently feel they can do better in the rotation on the open market this winter.
The biggest departure is that of Eickhoff. The once-promising starter projected to earn only $1.5MM, with one more season of control thereafter, but the Phils decided to cut bait after watching him struggle to a 5.71 ERA over 58 1/3 innings. Eickhoff had a few encouraging outings upon his return from a long injury layoff, but struggled thereafter and was again sidelined with arm woes.
The other three were also eligible for arbitration. Morin, who has a $1.2MM projected arb salary, struggled to get strikeouts during his stint with the club. Parker surprisingly turned in 11.2 K/9 and 2.2 BB/9 in 25 frames but also gave up a host of homers and earned runs. Perhaps he’d have been worth a lower-cost keeper price but the Phils weren’t biting at a projected $4.7MM. The 26-year-old Ramos entered the year as a key piece but struggled with injuries and showed a velocity decline when he was available. He projected to earn only $800K, but the team may not have been convinced of his ability to return to full health.
Meanwhile, a host of players were added back to the 40-man roster. Among the players activated from the 60-day injured list is starter Jake Arrieta, who has exercised his player option and will remain with the organization. On the heels of a messy, injury-marred campaign, that comes as no surprise. Additionally, outfielder Odubel Herrera was reinstated from the restricted list after the conclusion of his suspension for a violation of the league’s domestic violence policy. His future with the organization remains unclear following this procedural move.

Hughes is an interesting arm. Put him in the right spot, and hes a fairly effective bullpen piece.
jpelle36
Why are they still determined to hang on to the last piece of the Hamels trade, Number 5, Nick (THE HIGHLIGHT REEL) Williams?
whuron
Keeping him now doesn’t mean they’ll keep him the offseason. Could be non-tendered in two weeks or DFA’d later down the line once they make MLB signings
U000twb
Because he can play. Krapler F’ed him
renegadescoach
Williams is practically playing for free, so the Phillies have no reason to cut ties with him without getting anything in return. I believe he will be part of a package this winter in a trade for pitching or a 3B.
Marc (Phillies Phan)
I kind of agree with U000twb. This was one of the moves I was critical of Kapler for too. Williams is not terrible. He is an everyday corner outfielder. The more he plays, the better he would be.
That said though, I also agree that he probably will be part of a package. There is no real place for him right now, but I like the guy.
phils phanatic
i think williams gets a bad rap bc he messes up his fair share of routine plays and his routes on balls arent consistent. all that topped off with the fact that his bat has been very inconsistent(which likely has to do with limited playing time which in turn has to do with his shaky at times defense). i dont know if he’ll be apart of a package this winter but i dont expect him on the phils 40 man come opening day
ham77
Too bad Eickhoff could never stay healthy enough. He’s shown some promise.
jleve618
Yea that surprised me, but when I looked at his year to year stats it seemed warranted.
Vandals Took The Handles
The worst rebuild of the past 30 years.
The most overrated roster following the most overrated farm system.
A team that is literally unwatchable when playing – half the guys on the field seem to be concerned with something other then the game.
But unsurprisingly, the national sports media are fascinated with them and can’t give them enough coverage.
P.S. Any coverage on the Gold Glove recipients?
Woods Rider
What are you watching? I’m outside of the Philadelphia Market and if I didn’t have MLB.TV, I’d never know they were still existing.
Vandals Took The Handles
Heavens, ESPN actually sent a full-time reporter out this year just to cover them. Every time I looked at their website for MLB scores, there were Tweet ‘s on the upper right hand side of the screen letting me know how the Phillies were doing that game. Finally around June or July they realize the team stuck, and baseball fans around America could care less, so suddenly Phillie coverage disappeared.
MLB.com and others kept giving them more generous coverage then they deserved,
AndyMeyer
Who overrated their farm system?
Vandals Took The Handles
Seriously?
Did you read this site and every other national MLB site over the past 2 years. Gads, one would think they were bring up impact guys like Springer, Correa, Bregman, Altuve, etc.; or Soroka, Swanson, Acuna Jr., Albies, etc.
While Nola is solid, next to him their 3-4 year teardown and rebuild’s best players developed were Kingery and Hoskins. That’s embarrassing. Fans should sue the owner and FO for delivering a defective product.

Someone is bitter
phils phanatic
middleton and the phils did exactly what the cubs, nationals, and astros didnt have the balls to do. he pushed his prospect chips “all-in”. he didnt want to collect draft picks for a decade and wait for them to develop because “the philly fans deserve better than that.” he went out and got a win now shortstop in exchange for a younger project. he went out and acquired THE BEST catcher in baseball. he went out and signed a generational talent a year before they even expected to contend. why? because unlike those other teams he didnt want to sit back and line his pockets with revenue money from the philly fans. that’s a real owner. that’s an owner with balls!!
spinach
No one ever said the Phillies had an elite farm system.
AndyMeyer
They also have Alec Bohm, Adonis Medina and Spencer Howard coming up through the ranks
Saying it was a total failure and embarrassing is a little harsh and out of place
Did they completely whiff on talent, absolutely. (Moniak, randolph, etc). But so do a lot of teams.
They’re overhauling the scouting department so we’ll see
Ognir200
Speaking of embarrassing, 1st round picks between Hamels and Nola:: Greg Golson, Kyle Drabek, Adrian Cardenas, Joe Savery, Travis d’Arnaud, Anthony Hewitt, Zach Collier, Jesse Biddle, Larry Greene, Shane Watson, Mitch Gueller, J.P. Crawford, So far, Cornelius Randolph and Mickey Moniak haven’t lived up to expectations either.: Hopefully the farm system turns the corner with Alec Bohm, Spencer Howard and Bryson Stott.
AndyMeyer
We shall see. I hope so too. And yes, their list of 1st round picks is definitely a list of “who?” Haha
Many teams have similar lists when it comes to 1st round selections
Ognir200
What do the Cubs, Nationals and Astros have in the last 4 years that the Phillies don’t? …..and with the big name acquisitions the Phillies still finished 4th., 16 games back. They could have finished 4th with Crawford at SS and Alfaro behind the plate. Their improvement? 80-82 to 81-81 and their top pitching prospect is now the top prospect for the Marlins. I agree Realmuto is the best right now but why did teams attempt to steal on him 3 times more than they did against Molina? I’m still trying to figure that one out.
phils phanatic
those moves werent necessarily made to improve the 2019 phillies. like i said in a previous post, they saw an opertunity to push their chips in a year earlier then they realistically expected to contend. also i feel the need to point out that the phillies had a consistent winner and championship in a more recent time than either of those clubs before their current runs. the phils had the balls to try to figure out a method for rebuilding that wouldnt require 6-7 years of collecting draft picks and prospects like them. of course they also hung onto hope of contending a few years longer than they should have as well. will their method work as well as the astros/cubs/nats strategy?we’ll see, i certainly hope so. more importantly, i applaud middleton for having the balls to try something different for building a consistent winner than tanking for years on end
phils phanatic
why are u so bitter, did john middleton find ur mom?
Vandals Took The Handles
Little boy, I tried to watch the Phillies maybe a dozen times the past 2 years. Couldn’t watch even 3 innings. A disjointed group of oddballs playing for their stats and – hopefully – next contract. Other then they’ve had the worst defense in MLB for those 2 years, don’t throw to the proper base, can’t run the bases, can’t execute moving runners into scoring position, get guys home with a runner on 3rd and less then 2 outs, the relief pitching is a disaster, and on and on – they’re just glorious.
This huffing, puffing, overweight Middleton owns an MLB franchise, and seems to have it confused with rotisserie baseball. Apparently his idea of slimming down is throwing “stupid money” out of his burgeoning pockets. Tone starts at the top – he has no respect for the game, and his team on the field follows his lead.
Call me when Realmuto signs an extension. Because the word I got last season was that he wants to play out his option and play in Texas, near his Oklahoma home. He doesn’t like the north or the environment around Phillieball. He thought he was escaping from Marlins prison into a quality major league operation. Instead…..
Seriously, an MLB team that wants to build around Bryce Harper?!?!?!?
Brain
Fans dont try to watch them. They watch them. Clearly a nats fan
EndinStealth
I think an Astros fan since he wanted to name drop them so often.
Vandals Took The Handles
I follow at least 10-12 teams every year and have for over 50 years. Love watching and following good baseball,
Yes, I loved watching the Nats this year. Their post-season success didn’t surprise me. I watched them stumble the first 45 games or so, then begin to stabilize when they dumped a terrible pitching coach in early May, and brought up Paul Menhart that was their minor league pitching coordinator. Then slowly their injured players came back – particularly Rendon. The team hit the sweet spot when they brought in Gerardo Parra via waivers as a 4th OF/backup 1B. His grand slam HR to cap a comeback against the Dodgers is what got that team to take off, Shortly after he started the dugout dancing. Those players genuinely liked being around one another, to a point that that all hung out with their families on off days. Also helped that their FO is run by a seasoned baseball guy that does not have to consult spreadsheets to know what’s working and what isn’t.
–
Like what the Yankees did firing their pitching coach and revamping their pitching approach (I’ve been writing the need for that here the last 2 years). Keeping an eye on the Brewers for 2020 – interesting moves already by Stearns. Said the Mets were looking for a manager that got strategy from the FO – today at his presser Beltran confirmed that.
Expect the unexpected from numerous teams this off-season. Liked Girardi going to the Phils but no mater how hard he tries, I can’t see him and that front office together in 2021….think the Phils owner is in line with the Padres owner in having their FO’s on the clock.
P.S. Thought going into 2019 that the Astros would go to the WS from the AL. Just a brilliant GM that built a brilliant organization. Had no doubt that he would pick up and promote players during the season that will fill any open gaps.
phils phanatic
u could have just simplified both of ur answers to my question with a simple “yes, he did naughty things with my mom”
Pax vobiscum
You tight with Realmuto? You want to name your sources who gave you some inside “word” that he wants to play somewhere other than Philadelphia? Players will play wherever and whoever gives them the most money and term. See Patrick Corbin.
AndyMeyer
Just so you know, the Nationals built around Bryce Harper. They didn’t build around Ryan Zimmerman or Anthony Rendon
AndyMeyer
And did you also read the article in July where Realmuto himself said he’s open to signing an extension with Philly??
bucketbrew35
“Other then they’ve had the worst defense in MLB for those 2 years, don’t throw to the proper base, can’t run the bases, can’t execute moving runners into scoring position, get guys home with a runner on 3rd and less then 2 outs, the relief pitching is a disaster, and on and on – they’re just glorious.”
Maybe you should have watched more than 12 games. The Phillies were the most improved defensive team in baseball year over year this season.
gmetwagner
I enjoyed your analyses. You are a good baseball fan.
Schmidtstache20
Resources from said farm system were used to land the best catcher in baseball! A similar move will be made this year
DarkSide830
what!? why did you outright Ramos? idve also picked up Hughes’s option given the many holes in the pen next year.
phils phanatic
for ramos the answer is simple. 11K’s, 7BB’s in 15 IP and a FIP over 7. yes he has potential but if this club wants to get over the hump we’ve gotta trim some of the fat. i’d be fine bringing him back on a minors deal but 40 man roster spots are crucial this time of the year
DarkSide830
those numbers were in a significantly smaller sample size then his 2018 numbers, he’s cheap, and the team cant afford to just cut anyone that isnt a superstar in the pen.
phils phanatic
hughes i’ll break it down like this. 23IP, 10earned runs given up, 7 homers given up. again, another guy i’d like to see in camp on a minors deal but in order to stick in the majors he’s gotta cut back on the gopher balls
DarkSide830
Hughes was also one of the best relief pitchers from 2014-18, and 3 million really isnt a big price given the upside, and again, the lack of other strong options in the pen.
phils phanatic
im not arguing against ur points, both guys do have upside but those 40 man spots are crucial at this point in the offseason and they need to sign at least 2 guys for the bullpen anyway. there’s also a bunch of arms still in the system that are “promising” to contribute in the pen as well
PiratesFan1981
Making these moves, makes me believe they are planing to go after Strasburg or Cole this off-season. I think both guys end up on one of the California teams.
h0wmyd0ing
Pirates will sign Eickoff…
1 year, 4.5M.
bucketbrew35
“Pirates will sign Eickoff…
1 year, 4.5M.”
Wouldn’t be a bad spot for him to end up.
CoachSantoni
Pitching wins championships. Having said that the Phillies need 3 above average additions to the rotation not one stud as in Cole. Give me Zack Wheeler 5/100, Dallas Keuckle 3/40,Cole Hamels 2/24 go along with Aaron Nola & bring up Spencer Howard. Trade Arrieta, Hoskins, Franco, Herriara, & Williams. Sign RP Will Smith 3/45, Sign 3b Mike Moustakas 2/22 and bring up Alec Bohm to play 1b.
Rotation
Wheeler
Keuckle
Nola
Hamels
Howard
Closer Will Smith
1b Bohm
2b Kingery
SS Seguira
3b Moustakas
RF Harper
CF Haisley
LF McCutchen
C. Realmuto
htbnm57
They won’t get anything for any of those guys in trade unless they eat almost all the salaries and then very little.
phils phanatic
there’s so much wrong with this post i almost dont want to comment but here goes nothing. the rotation will be fine with 2 more additions, although i’d prefer an additional arm or 2 on minor league signings for depth as well. bohm and howard arent ready yet. best case scenario for both is they light the minors on fire and will be up in june/july. arrieta is useful as a backend innings eater and you’d have to eat money to deal him for no return anyway. franco gets u a lottery ticket at best but teams would likely just wait for the non-tender to come thru. instead of trading him, either non tender him or hold onto him and use for a potential with moose at 3rd. it’d also be nice if they held onto him to try to increase his versatility by trying him out at 1st definitely but maybe even try LF as well. why trade rhys? he’s a damn good bat who had a down year by his previous standards. he’s young and being paid the league minimum for a middle of the order bat.herrera also would net nothing in a trade and would require eating money as well. again, hold onto him as he’s a useful piece. the OF will be fine with herrera in center, flanked by cutch and harper with hasely and quinn/williams as backups.
