The Padres have outrighted Seth Mejias-Brean and Carl Edwards Jr. to Triple-A, with the latter having already elected free agency after clearing waivers. The club also designated Jacob Nix and Eric Yardley for assignment.
With the day’s moves, the Friars will bid adieu to Edwards after a brief stay in the organization. He was added as a buy-low candidate in a mid-season swap, but struggled in brief action and ended up going down with injury.
Mejias-Brean was fairly productive at all levels but evidently didn’t convince. The 28-year-old infielder earned his first taste of the majors after slashing .316/.371/.455 in 448 Triple-A plate appearances. He managed two doubles and two dingers in his 33 trips to the plate with the big club.
The future remains unclear for Nix and Yardley. The former had a tough MLB debut showing in 2018 and was then diagnosed with a small UCL tear. He was throwing rather well on a rehab assignment but was arrested in a bizarre incident after the end of the season.
Yardley, 29, was effective all year long at both Triple-A and in a brief MLB debut. All told, he allowed only 17 earned runs in 75 1/3 frames. Yardley didn’t get many strikeouts, but drew huge volumes of grounders and was the rare pitcher who proved largely immune to the long ball in 2019.

Not doggy door guy!
rizdakc99
Guess management had him on a short leash. Hopefully he can find his furever home.
nowheretogobutup
Here’s a possible pick from the Braves Julio Teheran has some good numbers as a SP role, badly needed in our rotation could fill in for a No. 3 spot.
SDHotDawg
I wouldn’t mind that. But he was expected to get $15mil in arbitration. Not sure he’d be worth it.
DarkSide830
anyone should be in the market for Nix. legal issues aside, he probably would remain with the team had they less of a roster crunch.
lowtalker1
Damaged good just the same
He should have gotten tjs during the spring
DarkSide830
i certainly woulnt stake a valuable roster spot on him, but he’s optionable and looked good in his rehab, so there’s reason to believe he’s worth it.
CNichols
Aside from the legal issues, the problem with him is he is incredibly hit or miss. His first outing in the bigs he threw 6 shoutout innings and then his next start got tagged for 5 runs in the 1st and didn’t even make it out of the inning. That’s basically how he was in the minors too.
Would have been nice to keep him to see if he could ever find his groove considering he’s just 23, but makes sense to cut him loose rather than some of the other options.
SDHotDawg
Rookie pitchers do that.
Someone will take a chance on him, he’s got a lot of potential.
csspackler
Reggie Lawson didn’t. Was sensational in Arizona Fall League.
Pads Fans
Lawson stunk in Amarillo this year.
csspackler
Threw a handful of games. Dealt with elbow issues. Got the plasma injection. Dropped the slider. Then dominated the AFL.
nowheretogobutup
If he hadn’t got his head stuck nobody would know the difference LOL
brownisback
So it’s fair to say Nix what’s shown the “doggie” door?
jdgoat
What happened to Edwards this year? He’s not far removed from a nice string of years.
HalosHeavenJJ
I’m wondering the same thing. Did he get hurt or just fall victim to reliever volatility/small sample size?
keysox
He’s not good
jdgoat
But why did he have four straight years of success until this year? Hard to believe they were all flukes.
CNichols
He’s always had major issues with walks. He has a career 5.11 BB/9 and 11.1% BB% which are both awful.
He used to get a lot more strikeouts and avoid homeruns/hard contact, which helped him sustain himself even with his poor command. I think he tried to re-vamp his delivery this past season to have better command of the strike zone, which apparently did not work and he found himself in AAA.
HalosHeavenJJ
Thanks. Hard contact with men on base is a killer.
cubsfanbudman1908
He wasn’t the same since the league game down on his jump delivery technique. Hopefully an offseason to clear his mind and work on his mechanics helps him out. With all the declined options the Cubs have made, I’d like to see them sign him to a small contract. He will be successful again soon.
mrpadre19
Cubsfanbudman:
Are you referring to Matt Capps?
lowtalker1
I’m glad he is off the roster
And that takes us to 40/40
More cutting if they want to protect rule 5
ChiSoxCity
Edwards was never consistent. He couldn’t command the strikezone or keep the ball down, something all too common with cubs pitchers.
excusemeflo
He has zero confidence. As soon as something goes wrong, you can see it in his body language and he’s done. Doesn’t have the mental toughness to sustain success at this level
theoepsteinhof
Edwards is a full-blown head case! He lets every little thing get in his head…you could see it on his face every outing. That confident swag after a K, but more often it was the look of total anguish after a walk or hit.
Maybe a good psychologist would help him.
Show Me Your Tatis
Alright. That clears the 2 remaining spots needed to reinstate guys from the 60-day IL and the 2 spots needed to protect Buddy Reed and Esteury Ruiz from the Rule 5.
lowtalker1
That’s 40/40
Now, they need to clear more for rule 5 if they want but Ruiz Ks way too much
Show Me Your Tatis
No now it’s at 38 (counting the guys that have to be reinstated)
lowtalker1
Not according to what I’ve counted
And what that tool bill center said as well
I say don’t protect either one of them. Reed cannot hit Ruiz Ks at an alarming rate throughout the minors
disgruntledreader 2
No.
csspackler
They’re at 40/40 right now.
lowtalker1
Bingo
Show Me Your Tatis
I stand corrected they are at 40/40 rn

Mariners should pick up yardley
craigmiller13
Yardley sounds ideal for Reds ballpark
ASapsFables
Carl Edwards Jr. is exactly the type of arm the White Sox love signing every offseason, one who throws hard but has command issues. It’s also about time that pitching coach Don Cooper fixes one of those arms like he did with Tommy Kahnle a couple of seasons ago.
ChiSoxCity
Edwards, the human bp machine.
bigcheesegrilledontoast
C Edwards Jnr has great stuff, I really believe he should be spending the off season putting on a little weight and spending as much time in the gym as possible.
ASapsFables
Carl Edwards Jr. might benefit from some mental exercising this winter as much as physical enhancement. He ought to consider consulting a sports psychologist as much as an athletic trainer. Any prospective teams should consider this alternative as well. Often times confidence can be a key missing ingredient in performance.
ASapsFables
He was hardly that in his first 3+ seasons on the Northside of Chicago. Perhaps the micro-managing of Joe Maddon along with the game of musical chairs involving Cubs pitching coaches over the past few seasons took their toll on Edwards.
I’m not suggesting he is deserving of a guaranteed MLB contract this offseason but Edwards would definitely be worth a minor league deal with an invite to camp which is something all teams do every winter. Why not the White Sox who have a more than a few holes to fill on their pitching staff this offseason including in the bullpen?
ChiSoxCity
Sorry, but that’s a load of bs. Why do fans love blaming everyone but the player for poor performance? Maddon didn’t micromanage anything. The bullpen was a hot mess during Joe’s entire tenure with the cubs. He used the players Epstein gave him, and they rarely performed with any consistency. That’s on the architect of the roster, not the manager.
ASapsFables
Commenting as both a White Sox and Cubs fan I’d also like to see the southsiders take a flyer on FA reliever Pedro Strop this offseason. Unlike Carl Edwards Jr., I believe Strop would be deserving of a guaranteed MLB contract, perhaps one for around $5MM or so.
ChiSoxCity
Just, no.
cygnus2112
Man, the Fryers are desperate to provide Buddy Reed protection from the Rule5 draft!
For real though, I would imagine Nix will be scooped up pretty quickly…
CNichols
Buddy Reed hit .228 in AA last year, I’m pretty confident they leave him exposed and if someone takes him, then it is what it is. I have a hard time believing he’ll last the year on anyone’s MLB roster.
cygnus2112
Totally agreed! That said, I inserted a certain level of sarcasm with the first part of my take…
CNichols
That makes sense, the “for real though” should have been a tip off.
That being said, there are plenty of people on here legitimately clamoring for the Padres to cut players to protect him so you never can know!
Show Me Your Tatis
I would have switched out Jacob Nix for Franchy Cordero. But what can you do?
lowtalker1
Nix is a tjs waiting to happen
VegasSDfan
Nix, we have seen immature players like him before. Move on. We have better prospects than a future reliever.
Show Me Your Tatis
All the evidence seems to point to him drunkenly entering the wrong house. What he did wasn’t too smart but there is no evidence tbat he had any ill intent.
billysbballz
White background on the article was no bueno as I couldn’t read the narrative. Just a lil Fyi
nowheretogobutup
Back to the Stras news, here’s my take, There’s no way they are going to get Stras, that is total propaganda from AJ, he likes to do this so when Stras goes with another club or back to the Nats AJ looks good for trying more total hog wash.
mrpadre19
Nix was just nixed?
bravesfan
Carl Edwards Jr needs to go back to racing…
All joking aside what a year to forget for the kid. He’s way better than what he did last year. Hope he turns it around
