NOV. 1: It took a three-year pact to lure Dickerson, per Jon Heyman of MLB Network (via Twitter). Additionally, Wayne Kirby will come over from the Orioles to serve as first base coach, Joel Sherman of the New York Post first tweeted. As Heyman points out, Kirby also has ample experience with Machado.
OCT. 31: New Padres manager Jayce Tingler is set to make an important hire as he prepares for his first year as a skipper. He’s likely to hire Phillies infield coach Bobby Dickerson as his bench coach, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com tweets.
Dickerson, who turned 54 in September, is a former minor league infielder who has never managed above the minors. But Dickerson has logged several years as a coach at multiple levels, and the hope for the Padres is that his vast experience will help Tingler break into his new role.
If the Padres do select Dickerson, his Philly tenure will conclude after just one season. Before joining the Phillies last winter, Dickerson worked in various coaching roles in Baltimore from 2010-18, a span in which he developed a close bond with ex-Orioles star and current Padres third baseman Manny Machado. Dickerson shared some insight into his long-running relationship with Machado with Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer last winter.
“I’ll say this: When Manny puts his mind to something, it’s just unbelievable to watch,” Dickerson told Lauber. “He’s that talented. In 2013, he was the best defensive player I’ve ever seen in my life. If he’s locked in, he can change the game with his glove. For sure, I’ve seen it. The challenge is his locked-in-ness, and that’s well-documented.”

Smart and smooth move by my padres
dimitrila
As a long-time Orioles fan, I can say that he is a outstanding coach. He gets a lot out of working with infielders, but I would also say that his work at third base is very intelligent and strong.
User 3218710645
I think you are right about him as an infield coach. But as a third base coach he was awful. He would always get guys thrown out being way over aggressive in bad spots that would kill rallies. He has to hold some kind of record for most times getting a runner thrown out by 4 steps.
dimitrila
He was outstanding sending guys. Calculated aggressiveness. But for a real nice memory see Birds/Tigers 10/3/14 and Bobby D’s send of JJ Hardy off the Delmon Young double. All-time classic O’s moment.
User 3218710645
I was at that game. All time classic orioles moment no doubt. But everyone and their brother is sending JJ there. He would consistently run the Orioles into outs. And not on bang bang plays either. Running out of innings NON calculated out by 3-4 steps kind of sending. Nice guy and like I said think he did a great job with the infielders. But to say he wasn’t a disaster as third base coach would be laughable.

Smart and smooth yes always think of that regarding Padres

The Madres’ next interim manager…

Padres fans know who their moms (madres) are. Dodger fans have no idea.

“When Manny puts his mind to something, it’s just unbelievable to watch.”
I humbly recommend Manny putting his mind to hit better at Petco Park.
padreshave32yrstobestdodger1stwswin
Agreed. Earn your wages, Manny. Also, lose those idiotic haircuts and the dumb mumbo-jumbo after HRs.
Wolverines2
Jesus you are old.
padreforlife
Yes his .211 postseason average reflects that .177 in WS

would be nice if i could stop expecting the padres to do the right things, that way i don’t have to have my expectations totally let down when they do the wrong things
SDHotDawg
That’s why we have forums like this. So that we can vent about the stupidity of our team without having to cave in and lower our expectations like so many fellow Padres fans.
It’s cathartic.
bbatardo
Sounds like a good hire. I’m guessing Barajas moving on since he was passed up as manager.
nowheretogobutup
I’d say Barajas will be a Mgr for either our AAA or AA farm team.
nowheretogobutup
Wonder who’s going to be the next pitching coach? and Third base coach?
Show Me Your Tatis
Darren Balsley.
baseballanalytics
We can only hope. There are some rumblings that we could move on, which would be a terrible decision (imo)
Show Me Your Tatis
They do and you can already add me to the fire Tingler bandwagon
padreshave32yrstobestdodger1stwswin
Add me to the retain Dave Roberts committee—that guy sure knows how to lose in the clutch. Doyers always get knocked out in the big fight. Karma, baby.
Vandals Took The Handles

Balsley should be with this organization until he retires! No change in pitching coach
padreshave32yrstobestdodger1stwswin
Let’s hope.
nowheretogobutup
I don’t see Balsley coming back in 2020, I see Jayce hiring his guy or should I say AJ’s guy. That’s my prediction and I’m standing by it.
Show Me Your Tatis
@nowheretogobutup why? Balsley wasn’t Black or Green’s guy when they were hired and he still stayed. He can become Tingler’s guy like he did with Black and Green. And realistically there’s no one Tingler could bring in who is better.
beersy
You/we don’t know that?
Show Me Your Tatis
Balsley is the best pitching coach in the game.
padreforlife
He’s been with team too long goes back to Bochy
padreforlife
Ting is yes man has no say in coaches
nowheretogobutup
He’s done and gone we move on to a new pitching coach
Show Me Your Tatis
No he’s not. If Balsley goes Tingler better follow him out the door.
beersy
I respect what Balsley has done , but Tingler should be able to hire whomever he wants.. This may be his only shot and Preller;s last shot, so let him/them choose who he/they want.
Show Me Your Tatis
But why would you WANT anyone else?
outinleftfield
Balsley is the pitching coach. No doubt. But Hoffman is on the hot seat. Its too bad Schumaker isn’t, but he is Preller’s boy.
csspackler
Perhaps they should interview some college pitching coaches … Scott Brown or Chris Fetter.
steelerbravenation
Padres are going to get Strasburg
nowheretogobutup
I’d rather have Corey Dickerson for three years in LF, Myers is gone as we know and the once great so called OF is in need of repair, where’s all those prospects???
outinleftfield
I’d rather have Mejia in LF. We need more LH bats in the everyday lineup and God knows that boy can’t catch for beans. Maybe add a prospect or one of these guys clogging the 40 man and get something decent in the Myers trade. Ain’t no great prospects ready to play CF or LF.
Show Me Your Tatis
How is Myers gone? Who is going to take him?
padreforlife
No team is Padre fans can’t comprehend that he has zero value with contract

Boycott Petco. Owners understand declining attendance. Players loved Barajas…..if PADRES cared about manny….they would have hired buck….he probably refused to interview because of Another Jackass!
nowheretogobutup
Players loved Barajas but were 1-9 when he was the Mgr. LOL. I’d rather have the players hate the Mgr. and be 9-1.
padreforlife
Bingo but Padre fans yearned for Barajas because he speaks Spanish
lowtalker1
You mean increasing attendance and highest tv viewing in ages.
padreforlife
That’s what Padre fans love and prospects
dvmin98
Wait, what? Attendance was up like 250,000 last year. This isn’t all about Manny, its the best man for the job.
seth3120
I thought the Dodgers and Giants was a bitter rivalry but I’m wondering if the Padres and Dodgers fans have more disdain for each other
padreforlife
Rivalry has to include to competing teams. Padres have had 2 steaks of 9 losing seasons in a row and have won 3 playoff series in 51 years.
padreshave32yrstobestdodger1stwswin
My Padres are losers—have been for 50 years. Like my name says, padres/have/32/yrs/to/best/dodger/1st/ws/win (it took the losers 83 years since they fell out of their momma’s tail to win their 1st title). Dodger fans think they’re royalty. 5 titles in 136 years in MLB says they’re dawdling diddlers.
padreforlife
How about pennants won what 15 or so? Division titles? Padre fan should not be putting any team down
padreshave32yrstobestdodger1stwswin
Not WS champion=LOSER. Keep counting your participant ribbons. My Padres know we’re losers—fact. So are your Dawdling Diddler Dodgers. Facts matter—5-131 after $28 billion spent.
padreshave32yrstobestdodger1stwswin
Giants fans have the most class in baseball. The Cardinals fans are second. Dodger fans have had consecutive lower ribs removed so they can pump themselves up when they’re alone for the next season.
padreforlife
Attendance is skewed with opposing fans taking over and local TV watched also by opposing fans
padreshave32yrstobestdodger1stwswin
Opposing fans, particularly Dodger fans, come to beautiful Petco Park cause they can’t watch basebally on local TV in Los Angeles. We ought to charge Doyer fans triple their ticket price to view a game here. Add that money to Padres payroll. That money will allow San Diego to roll the dice on free agents we can’t currently afford. Call it a Competitive Balance Tax. Same with local hotels, bars, restaurants and massage parlors.
outinleftfield
What did I miss? They say he never managed above the minors but has vast experience? Sounds more like this is a hire to try to get Manny’s “locked-in-ness” started. He certainly wasn’t locked in for us last year. No coach should ever be hired just because of their relationship with one player. That is a recipe for disaster, but to be honest, hiring Tingler was a recipe for disaster so this can’t make the situation much worse. I wonder who the GM will be in 2021?
lowtalker1

padreshave32yrstobestdodger1stwswin
You know, when I was in 5th grade, I had never been in 6th grade before either. I did well, however, when I got there. Just cause you didn’t (twice, per Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Ward) shouldn’t make you a hater of others taking the logical next career step. Let it go, slowpoke.
beersy
Not a fan of the boring “new hat” that Tingler had to adorn yesterday, but I am a fan of the hires on the coaching staff thus far. Please let me see a white S and a gold D on the other hat!!!!!
lowtalker1
Love the hat

Look up “Bobby Dickerson drills” on YouTube – great stuff. Good for Bobby and a solid choice by the Padres.
Kwflanne
Am I the only one who’s seeing this hire as a way to please machado? Sorry manny, we aren’t even going to consider interviewing Schowalter like you recommended….. but here kid…. here’s a bench and first base coach from your time in Baltimore.
FloridaMan1988
So Machado is the GM?
