The Padres have designated outfielder Nick Martini for assignment, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com tweets. The club selected the contract of outfielder Jorge Ona from Double-A Amarillo in a corresponding move.
Martini joined the Padres off waivers from the Athletics at the end of August, but the 29-year-old then struggled over 96 plate appearances, hitting .244/.344/.317 with no home runs. He logged just 13 PA with the A’s this past season before they moved on from him, though Martini was a respectable member of their offense in 2018. The lefty slashed .296/.397/.414 across 179 trips to the plate, but he only hit one HR then.
Ona, now 22, came to the Pads as a hyped prospect out of Cuba in July 2016. The club signed Ona for $7MM, and he’s now coming off a short season in which he starred in his first taste of the Double-A level. Ona racked up 103 plate appearances and batted .348/.417/.539 with five homers, though the right shoulder surgery he underwent in July limited his campaign.

And yet Ian Kinsler remains…..

Probably want to make sure Urias makes it through the offseason without being traded before they release him and eat the $4m they owe him.

Kinsler owed 4 mil +

at least Pirela is gone this year.

Next time you think about whining about Hosmer’s contract, consider this …
The Yankees paid the last $68.5 million of Ellsbury’s contract for exactly zero at-bats.
Zero.
Deleted.User
How much did the Yankees outbid the next highest bidder for Ellsbury by? Ditto the Padres and Hosmer?
And did the Yankees also already have an immovable contract and a rising prospect at the position Ellsbury played before they signed him like the Padres did?
csspackler
$68.5 million … no at-bats.
None. Zero. Zilch. Nyet. Nada. Oje. Zippo.

It’s nice to have that kinda money to throw away.

That doesn’t answer my question…
Also, what happened to “Michael Gettys is a minor league free agent this offseason?”
zippytms
He’s not. The Padres still have one year of minor league control with him.

How much did the Padres outbid the next highest bidder for Hosmer?
Ellsbury had the 2nd or 3rd largest contract that in 2013 and a record deal for a CF. The Yankees outbid every other team for him.
Only Cano had a bigger overall deal that offseason. Ellsbury got a 7 year $148 million deal and an option for an 8th season at $21 million with a $5 million buyout. Tanaka had a higher guarantee at 7/155 but no option year.
Ellsbury has had no at bats since 2017 and he won’t in 2020 either at a cost to the Yankees of $21.86 million each season!
When they signed Hosmer, the Padres had no immovable contract. At the time the Myers deal was awesome. Myers was coming off a promising 2016 season where he had hit .259/.336/.461/.797 with a 115 OPS+ and 28 HR and SB in 157 games. Myers played 1B out of necessity for the team because they had no other options. He was brought on to be a corner OF.
Hosmer has been below league average on offense, but he has played 317 games in 2 seasons. Doesn’t make it a good deal, just means at least the Padres got something for Hosmer so far. The Yankees will pay $65 million without Ellsbury putting on the uniform one day for the final 3 years of his deal. .

Yeah the Padres got -0.5 WAR. Is that what you call getting “something for (sic) Hosmer”?

“Ellsbury had the 2nd or 3rd largest contract that in 2013 and a record deal for a CF. The Yankees outbid every other team for him.”
The Yankees may have outbid every other team for Ellsbury but by how much? If it was only by a little then it’s hard to pick on them too much. With Hosmer, the Padres basically bid against themselves.
“At the time the Myers deal was awesome.”
Uhm… what?
“Hosmer has been below league average on offense, but he has played 317 games in 2 seasons. Doesn’t make it a good deal, just means at least the Padres got something for Hosmer so far.”
See what tannedt said.
boltz82
Absolutely they did. Hosmer by all accounts had an off year. But what would any replacement the Padres trotted out there bring? Myers or Naylor in all likelihood would not have as “good” of a WAR.
boltz82
Unfair to say what the Padres competition was in bidding for Hosmer. Hindsight is always 20/20 though. Hosmer could’ve hit .300/30 and no one would say a word. At least the Padres are making efforts which is better than what they have done in the past. Evaluating players can be difficult. Everyone here bashing on the Padres and Hosmer are just arm chair QBs. Player acquisition doesn’t always pan out. We see that with Elsbury now.
boltz82
Add Stanton’s contract and the Yankees paid $46.86m for 3HR and 13RBI.
its_happening
Padres had to outbid Boston for Hosmer from what I remember. Which means they had to up their game to get him.
Birdsfordays
Nobody went to the Padres level. It was similar to Chris Davis and the Orioles. None of them could have been predicted to be as horrible as they are but they were Both clear mistakes at the time.
Deleted.User
@boltz82 so you are saying Myers and Naylor can’t produce positive WAR?
AaronMC
Ummm… Technically in this case it wasn’t all the Yankees as insurance covered most of it.
padreforlife
That’s reassuring
Ryan W
At least they get some money back from insurance
tannedt
Ellsbury’s WAR over the last 3 years (2018-2020)= 0
Hosmer’s = -0.5, with 2020 still to come
which is the worse deal?
dvmin98
Hey stop it, you can’t compare the Yankees and Padres. Its not allowed. Yankees can do no wrong, but Padres can only do wrong. Isn’t that how it works?
nowheretogobutup
Waiting for those trades and FA signing, I will say we should start hearing something right after Thanksgiving going into Dec. AJ has to make something happen or he’s gone if this team doesn’t hit at least .500 in 2020. He knows the pressure and what needs to be done.
Myers traded and eat 60% of his salary, Naylor stays in EP, trade and pick up two SP’s, a back up C if Hedges is traded, two OF’s both LH if possible. If the SP’s are No.. 2 and No. 3 in our rotation with the others spots added via trade we should be looking at least at .500.
padreforlife
“Preller we trust” lol

Better get a great starting catcher if Hedges is traded because Mejia is not the answer. Never seen a worse defensive catcher in a Padres uniform. Campusano is 2 years away. 1 LHB for the OF is enough.

Last call at Petco…
athleticsnchill
Do you remember when everyone said DFAing Nick Martini was a mistake the A’s would regret? Pepperidge Farms remembers.
padreforlife
Hilarious Padre fans think Preller who’s made bad move after bad move aside from 2 players who fans have in HOF is going to now make moves without his owners checkbook to excite fans
Hired Gun 23
I think we go after Jonathan Villar to man second if he is non-tendered by the Orioles…

Martini shaken, but not stirred over designation.

Is Ona really any different than Reyes or Naylor? A big, slow power hitter who plays LF and hits homers and strikes out a lot? One who didn’t do much 2 years ago and did a lot in a very small sample size last year before getting hurt. Did they really think someone would grab him and put him on the bench all year?
dvmin98
I think it was a mistake. I would have protected Valdes instead. Big righty that throws 100 (not much control).
