The Marlins have hired Hadi Raad to be their new director of pro scouting, according to a tweet from Lindsey Adler of The Athletic (link). Raad is a five-year veteran of the Yankees front office, most recently serving as the club’s director of minor league operations.
Raad, a collegiate player with Wheaton College from 2008 to 2010, carries scouting experience in both the Yankees and Rangers organizations. That Raad has ties with the Yankees may come as no particular surprise, considering that the Marlins have on a few occasions attracted figures connected to the old club of Miami CEO Derek Jeter. Recently, the club was said to have offered former Yankee Hensley Meulens a coaching role on the staff of manager Don Mattingly.
More notes from around the NL, mostly of the front office and coaching variety…
- After a report indicated that the club would interview Jeremy Hefner of the Twins on Monday as part of their search for a new pitching coach, could the Mets still be considering old friend Phil Regan for the job? The club hasn’t “officially ruled out” Regan, who took over as New York’s pitching coach following Dave Eiland’s dismissal in mid-summer, as noted in a tweet from Andy Martino of SNY (link). Although references to Regan’s age (82) are applied perhaps a bit too liberally in the press, Martino rightfully points out that the club’s reported candidates–including Hefner and Michigan pitching coach Chris Fetter–are clearly of a different profile than the veteran instructor Regan.
- Another well-traveled baseball figure, Ruben Amaro Jr., apparently still feels a deep connection with the Phillies organization for which he once served as GM, according to a profile from Bob Brookover of the Philadelphia Inquirer (link). After a two-year stint with the Mets in which he served in both coaching and front office capacities, Amaro Jr. is again a professional “free agent” this offseason–and one unabashed about stating his desire to work with his old club in Philly. “I’d be lying to you if I told you I didn’t want to work in the organization in some capacity again,” Amaro Jr. said of the Phillies. “I would love to come back. It’s home for me.” The veteran baseball man and Philadelphia native also indicated to Brookover that there are currently a number of vocational paths open to him (as one would expect of someone with his resumé), but it’s still worth noting that the 54-year-old would welcome a return to the team that relieved him of his GM duties late in the 2015 season.

the time Amaro caused the Mets to bat out of order was the most Mets thing that ever happened.

Nice. Mine is the game ending triple play.

Yes the triple play lol. Or When francour? Missed third base in LA causing them to lose that was a fun one too.

How about the dropped ball in the ninth inning of a game against the Yankees?
Or how they lost their final game at Shea and fans left before the closing ceremony??

What’s remarkable about all of this is that they’re all within like 3 years of each other.

As far as I’m concerned, Amaro only made one big mistake with the help of Dave Montgomery. The extension of Ryan Howard two years too soon..otherwise, he left the farm pretty loaded

That and trading Cliff Lee for prospects. None of those guys we got back came close to amounting to anything. I would have rather had Cliff on that 2010 team.

Dude.
Cliff Lee was dumped because he wouldn’t sign a Phillies friendly three year contract. Halladay did and away Lee went.
That’s John Middleton not Amaro.
Then things went bad and the rage about Cliff Lee continued and the Phillies brought him back. I had a direct conversation in the long defunct ESPN Phillies forum with Middleton’s son the movie producer about Cliff Lee and the Phillies getting a second chance to undo their mistake.

Loaded? Nothing in the Phillies organization is loaded.

What’s the rush to extend players at market rates?

a $100 million plus mistake (since, had they not done it, could and probably would have given him no more than $25 million, but likely way less than that, all things considered).
i remember seeing him fall, had 2 thoughts:
1. “oh, s###, he’s really hurt”
and 2. “oh, s###, philly still owes him $125 million”

Amaro did a fairly good job as Phillies GM. Yeah, he got caught up in the excitement and signed Howard too early. He also let Lee go but he made the moves getting Lee the first time, Halladay and Pence. Those moves set them up to have the best record in MLB in 2010-2011. The players just didn’t get the job done. But like I’ve always said you need more than being the best team, things have to break right for you as they did for Washington this year. On the other hand, Matt Klentak has made bad move after bad move.
herecomethephillies2018
Yeah those trades for Segura and Realmuto are really coming back to bite the Phillies now. That Nola extension is going to be an albatross and keep them from signing Cole, Wheeler, Strausburg, or any other top FA starter in the next 4 years. And did you see how bad Kingery’s rookie year was? Why on Earth did he sign him to such a long contract?
All sarcasm aside, it took guts to sign Kingery long term before his first major league AB. It took charisma to get Nola to sign such a team friendly deal. It took skill and foresight to dump Santana’s contract AND pick up a very solid SS. It took patience to not trade Sixto to the Mariners for Diaz, and that patience paid off by having Sixto available to trade for a true star in Realmuto. It took competitiveness to pry the best catcher in baseball away from a divisional opponent and preventing your rivals from acquiring him instead.
I don’t think Klentak deserves GM of the year, but the guy has made some smart moves, and yes, he’s made some bad moves. But I’d rather have a GM that tries to put the best product on the field than one who sits back and plays it cautiously all the time.
DarkSide830
i think people do think a lot more highly of Amaro now. a lot of his later moves were better.

82 isn’t super old, I’m in my 70’s but I wonder if Regan could handle all the travel involved.
jd396
I work with someone who’s 78 but you’d never guess out of his 60s, and I work with someone who is in their 50s but looks like the crypt keeper.
Larry David's Joe Pepitone Jersey
Hiring a younger coach like Hefner and keeping Regan actively involved with the major league club shouldn’t be mutually exclusive. While Regan’s work during the second half should definitely be recognized, it’s also important to think long term.
jorge78
Does Regan work cheap?

Amaro wants a paycheck…..
GothamGuy
yet there are no rumors of the Pirates having interest in Amaro to fill their general manager vacancy.

Good point Gotham.
David Montgomery signed Howard to the extension, not Amaro.
