We’ve seen movement on the relief market already, courtesy of the Braves. But the starting pitching market remains absolutely wide open and loaded with options, even after Jake Odorizzi decided against a full-blown open-market experience in favor of taking the qualifying offer.
Something will have to give at some point. There’s chatter already that some top players prefer not to experience the kind of lengthy waiting game that held sway over much of the market the past two winters. As importantly, the same appears to hold true for some teams. While there’s a lot of rotation supply, there’s also quite a lot of demand.
Indeed, there are so many starters populating MLBTR’s list of the top 50 free agents that it would be silly to consider them all here. We’ll focus on the eight top names — those that we see as having $20MM+ earning power on the open market. Will one of the big guns (Gerrit Cole, Stephen Strasburg) go early and set the market? Or will some team seek to bypass a major bidding war by quickly nabbing one of the next-best names available (Zack Wheeler, Madison Bumgarner, Hyun-Jin Ryu)? Sturdy veterans Dallas Keuchel and Cole Hamels might seek early deals; the former lagged last winter and the latter has made clear he’s willing to do a one-year contract with a contender. Then again, there could be a run on Michael Pineda, who looks to be an interesting upside play.
What do you expect? (Poll link for app users. Response order randomized.)
MadBum cuz the Braves want to win regardless of cost.
Then why would they sign MadBum?
Ehh I’d say Pineda but it’d be interesting how much he thinks he’s worth and If teams even want him now
Oops forgot about Strasburg that shouldn’t take too long either
If strasburg signs first, it sets the market for the other starters, so it might effect cole’s price.
I don’t see how that is so. Cole is younger than Stras and Stras is better than all the rest. The market is going to be autonomous.
But it gives Cole a better number to use as a comp in negotiations. If Strasburg gets, say, 5/$160+, then Cole can say he wants something like 7/$225+ and not have it be overplaying his hand.
Just came in to say, is that Pineda pictured at top, and dear heavens is that ever a hideous uniform.
Haha that’s why I picked it … wasn’t trying to highlight a given player, just wanted something offbeat.
I look at the site on my Mac laptop, and oftentimes (like this time) the pics don’t show. Is there a setting I can change on my end to correct that? I WANT to see the hideous uni pic! (laffing)
Thought it was deliberate, but editorially I would have guessed you were trying to tell us that Pineda should not be considered an attractive free agent.
Not sure if I can never look at him the same way again. Despite the fashion errors being of no fault of his own, I very much wish to forget this horror.
Part of me wants to study it to find out why it’s so much more revolting than other bad uniforms and the other part wants to vomit if I don’t avert my eyes quickly.
These were uniforms from the Negro League team in St. Paul that the Twins wore last season. Worst uniforms I have ever seen!
He pitched very good for about 2 months before the suspension!
That’s who I went with, figuring a re-signing with the Twins .
Stras, Dallas. madbum will probably be first 3
I think Cole & Strasburg will be latter. Agents want to access other pitcher signings to view the market for thier client.
If you’re the agents for all the other pitchers don’t you want to let Cole and Strasburg sign first to set the market high for your player?
Then you have less marquee arms to compete with on the market and hopefully a record breaking guarantee from Cole that you can use to prop up your client’s negotiating position.
I know everyone says Strasburg will either resign with the Nationals or go to SD. However unless blown away with an offer I think he might wait until after Cole signs. If Cole doesn’t sign with the Angels, they could then flip and offer Strasburg more money then the Nats or Padres.
This could definitely go to show how important the money is to someone like Strasburg.
It’s a flip of a coin. I don’t think most of them will sign before January, despite what the fans want.
I could see several signing during the winter meetings in December.
I chose Hyun jin-ryu, purely because of rumors. even though he is a Boras client (who isn’t). The rumors I’m hearing is either to Texas so he can play with Shin Soo-Choo, or back to L.A. I also think that since he is older, he’d like a little more stability, so maybe a quicker deal would clear his conscience. Ultimatley, he’ll probably be back in L.A, but MLBTR and I predicted he’ll go to Texas soo…
I think it will be Ryu also. Although I pick him because he doesn’t have a qualifying offer attached to him.
Although he could go latter due to his injury history and teams leery to give him what he wants due to that.
I’m leaning more DK because of what happened to him last year. I don’t think he will want to wait.
BIG SEXY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
#bringsexyback
I think Stras or Pineda
Should put (agent name) after player. That way all of (Boras) can be crossed off list
Who will holdout til June this year?
I said Michael Pineda because he’s the least coveted. I predict the Angels will sign the first free agent pitcher. And my guess is that pitcher is Wheeler.
Being a rangers fan, I hate hearing the rumors of the angels getting good pitching. It was so easy when you’re best starters were either Heaney, Skaggs (RIP), or Otani, and two of those three didn’t pitch last year.
I completely understand. I fear the Rangers getting another park, which means more money. And can you imagine the A’s with money?
The a’s with money is game over, unless they are used to being cheap, and then all the sudden they go and give out a few terrible contracts. (Like pujols, or maybe stanton.)
The A’s are going to have a tough time signing their young players in a few years. Chapman will be a $250 million player when he is a free agent. Should be around the time the new ball park will open. They will have to many decisions with their own players.
They will trade those guys in their arb years for stud prospects, like they always do.
No they won’t. They have no need to trade them for a while. Chapman might get traded his free agent year because Boras already said there will be no deal during arbitration years. Wouldn’t they trade Semien right now if that was true? Last year in arbitration year making $14 million. A lot of teams would take a player that just put up MVP stats.
Dallas cuz I’m sure he doesn’t want to go through that again!
Strasburg goes first back to the Nationals. It’s all about money.
Strasburg resigns with Nats first
Cole and Strasburg too cost prohibitive.
I say Hamels since he’s only after a one or two year deal with a contender.
Cards need a lefty, and I’d love to see Hamels … 2 plus an option year would be fine in my book. Maybe some appearance incentives as part of the deal.
Hamels to Phillie.
If you can toss 200 ins your worth at least 16-17 mill a year!
I bet that none of them sign with Houston. I can’t imagine any free agent signing with the Astros with these cheating allegations and the impending punishment waiting to be handed down.
If the money is right, I doubt any player would have a problem signing with Houston. While the punishment will be harsh, I doubt it will have any short term impact. They will lose international money and some draft picks which will hurt long term, but its not like they’re going to give Altuve and Verlander to the Mets for Robinson Cano as a punishment.
There will be a cloud over the organization. That could easily give players cause to seriously reconsider stepping under that cloud and risk becoming tainted.
Strausburg to Yankees
Hamels to the Phillies..
Not sure, but what I do know is Cole will be the last. I’ll be SHOCKED if he signs a contract before the start of May. Cole has already shown he only plays for “Team Cole”.. Whoever signs him will regret it for years,
curious about how the Astros thinh effecta Cole. he had some choice words after game seven, and it may not be all a factor of not getting put in by Hinch in that game.
May? Why would he want to jeopardize his performance the first year under his new contract by missing ST and getting a late start? I agree he will be a late signing but I say it’s done by February.
probably Hamels or Keuchel. former due to probable preferences in destination, and the latter due to fear or having to re-do his 2018-19 offseason.
I chose Gerrit Cole, just because I enjoy messing up polls.
It could be Cole. The Angels are going to make him a huge offer., I.M.O. He’ll either take the offer or the Angels will move on.
Madbum with the Braves or Giants
I went MadBum, based on my guess that he signs with the Braves and coupled with the rest of their earlier-than-most activity.
Strasburg signs Nov 27-Dec 6
Wheeler signs at winter meetings.
Cole signs after Xmas, before NYE.
Chet Stedman will sign quickly. I hear Montreal may offer 4/8.
Im going to say Cole Hamels. Veteran player who probably is just looking for a team to meet his asking price. First team to do so, he will sign with.
I’ll say Strasburg because I expected him to have resigned with the Nats already.
I’d say hamels shorter deal and as far as I know hasn’t already eliminated 25 from pursuing him
Jake Odorizzi says hi.
