The latest minor moves from around baseball…
- The Mariners have signed outfielder/first baseman Jose Marmolejos to a minor league contract, Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets. The deal comes with an invitation to spring training for the 26-year-old Marmolejos, who had been with the Nationals his entire professional career (which began in 2011). He divided last season between Double-A and Triple-A, hitting .315/.366/.545 with 16 home runs in 382 plate appearances at the minors’ highest level.

I never understand why some guys just don’t seem to get called up/progress through the minors and others do. Like it took this guy 5 years to make it past A despite hovering around a .300 batting average in rookie and A-ball. Sure he doesn’t seem to offer much in the power or speed department but still – he seems to hit at every level he’s played at thus far — and even provided a bit of pop (albeit in the AAA ‘juiced ball’ season) this past year. I wish him luck and who knows maybe he’ll finally get his shot after so many seasons toiling in the minors.

@ Jeff Zanghi . . . . absolutely agree, if dude can hit for average bring him up, especially a team like the Marlins that can certainly use the base runners.

Not every player is gifted with being able to hit home runs with regularity. If he can hit for average and get on base at a reasonable clip, there’s no reason why he shouldn’t get a major league chance.

What if that player were Felipe Vazquez?

Maybe his defense sucks or something? I dunno. Either that or they just dislike his personality and don’t want it to become infectious around younger more impressionable guys that they consider to be the teams future. I know the Braves are real careful about that with Acuna and Albies. They want them around the right role models. They might make an exception and hope for the best if they expect someone to become a star. If not, they might not risk it. Players are more than stats. Some are really great people. Some are Felipe Vazquez.

Maybe he has bad breath?

And now that the 40 man roster is gone, it will be harder for guys to get a chance

We have Omar narvaez, Domingo Santana, and dee Gordon who we are actively looking to remove from the 40-man.
Roster space shouldn’t be an issue right now as we still have at least 3 spots available
