Veteran infielder Martin Prado appears to be preparing to call it quits, sources tell Jon Heyman of MLB Network (Twitter link). The 36-year-old reached the open market after wrapping up a three-year extension with the Marlins.
Prado was in the midst of a solid campaign when he re-upped with the Fish late in the 2016 season. It seemed at the time like a bit of a hefty guarantee, but not wildly out of whack for the value he might have commanded on the open market in the ensuing winter.
Unfortunately, that proved to be a last hurrah in an otherwise excellent career. A string of leg injuries limited Prado’s availability and his performance fell off a cliff. In the three campaigns that followed, Prado has been limited to just 616 plate appearances of .241/.276/.313 hitting.
Prado spent most of his time in 2019 at first base; clearly, there aren’t any organizations that would prefer to have that sort of offensive production occupying that position. There’s no question Prado would need to settle for a minor-league deal if he decides to play.
The rough ending doesn’t detract from Prado’s worthwhile time in the majors. He spent half of his 14 years with the Braves before stints with the Diamondbacks, Yankees, and Marlins. In total, he owns a .287/.335/.412 slash over 5,861 trips to the plate in that span.

underrated career for sure

Prado was great as a Brave. Was sad to see him leave the Braves. I would be happy if he came back as a coach.
slowcurve
Was my favorite Brave during his time in Atlanta. So much grit and hustle.
fredmavis
Hey, Braves. it’s time to bring him back to ATL in any capacity.
goalieguy41
Why?
realgone2
Because the majority of Braves’ fans love nostalgia.
black69
Nostalgia or not, I think with Martin Prada in the Braves last year, you don’t hear about Acuna’s pimping not quite home runs.
wkkortas
The Devil wears Martin Prada.
todd76
I would really like if Acuna would dial down the showboating a little. Hopefully he can learn from his wiser buddy Albies.
802Ghost
This is where Markakis and Freeman need to do their thing as leaders.
bravesfan
I think the key here is “any capacity”… I think he would make an excellent coach. Minors for example. Even as a hitting coach at the majors maybe in the future.
stan lee the manly
It’s easy to forgot how good a player was after a couple of years of regression and injury. Those are some darn fine career numbers from a guy that didn’t always get the attention he deserved.
antibelt
He’s the reason teams no longer want to sign free agents. Robbed Miami blind. Don’t blame the owners for not wanting to chance this type of production.
swinging wood
He put a gun to the owners’ heads and said sign me or else? That’s a pretty serious accusation you’re making.
MarlinsFanBase
Actually, he’s not the reason. There are many more far better examples now and previously.
Right now, we have the other Marlins player, Wei-Yin Chen. There is also Robinson Cano and Albert Pujols. From the past, Bobby Bonilla, Danny Tartabull, and the master of it all, Vernon Wells.
From Marlins history: Michael Morse, Jarrod Saltalamaccia, Heath Bell, Ricky Nolasco, Edinson Volquez, Carlos Zambrano, John Buck, Alex Fernandez.
All of these are much more of a reason that owners don’t want to sign free agents than Prado is.
StandUpGuy
You forgot about Chris Davis.
metsie1
The Marlins can’t draw flies to their games. As a result, they can’t afford to sign any free agents. The worst team in Major League Baseball.
MarlinsFanBase
Really, a Mets fan is saying this? What team has the longest championship drought in the NL East? Let’s see….
Last championship:
Nats – 2019
Phillies – 2008
Marlins – 2003
Braves – 1995
Mets – 1986
Yeah, sucks to be a Marlins fan compared to a Mets fan.
SalaryCapMyth
Did you fall down a flight of stares and break every brain cell in your head? The Marlins extended him with a 3/40 contract. I can look at his stats and see the Marlins didnt get their moneys worth but you’re REALLY going to pin all that on HIS contract? There have been many, MANY far worse contracts than his and the Marlins have and had many worse problems than Prado.
MarlinsFanBase
It was easy to see this coming. Prado left it all out on the field to the point that he is broken and shouldn’t have any questions about trying to play any more. He’s done.
Class act. Hopefully the Braves bring him into their franchise for life after his playing days. If not them, hopefully the Marlins or one of the other franchises that had the honor of him being on their roster. He is without a doubt someone to consider for management or front office roles.
StandUpGuy
Yeah. I could totally see him with the Braves in a coaching capacity. The fans love him here. He had his best years in Atlanta and the Braves seem to be the only team that didn’t actually have to pay him much. I knew people here that were actually mad when the Braves traded him to Arizona for Justin Upton. At that point Upton was a consistent .300 avg. 30 home run guy who is younger than Prado. That shows you how much Atlanta loved him.
jorge78
There were many other players in that trade…..
SalaryCapMyth
I really appreciate fans like you. Your team got a bad deal with Prado but you can step outside the production he gave YOUR favorite team and look at his career objectively and be gracious.
MarlinsFanBase
Thanks. Part of being a baseball fan is being honest rather than emotional when it comes to a lot of things…especially like the positively impacting players like Prado. The guy played a complete career with class and no drama. He played until he could no longer play without going on the DL. If you’re a player that isn’t good, but not Hall of Fame good, you still want a career like Prado. Other Marlins that come to mind are Mike Lowell, Jeff Conine, Charles Johnson, Cliff Floyd, Preston Wilson, Luis Castillo, Juan Pierre and Edgar Renteria among others.
realgone2
Very underrated player.
802Ghost
Bring him back to Atlanta to begin his coaching career, and let him take over 3rd base when Washington leaves.
dymez17
Acuna is a beast
brandons-3
Letting guys like Infante, Prado, McCann, and Hudson walk is an underrated part of why the Braves were forced into rebuilding a year after locking up their young core.
brandons-3
And no, I don’t mean those guys exactly. Rather the kind of hitters, players, and clubhouse guys they were.
Youtube.com/@PINGTR1P
It was more of a Frank Wren stupidity of signings. Bj Upton to be specific. Also, overloading on power hitters who K’d a ton and couldn’t get on base. It’s funny, because a lot of silly fans loved that 2013-2014 team. They were mediocre at best and it was a miracle they even made the playoffs with that awful strategy. Their saving grace was the pitching and Kris Medlen pitching out of his mind. You do realize though half of those guys were traded? Infante for Uggla, The Justin Upton trade (Prado).
toastyroasty
It was one of the saddest days in braves history when Prado was traded for Dan Uggla. I will never forgive Freddy Gonzalez for bringing Struggla to Atlanta in that truly horrible trade
Bds258
Prado was NOT traded for Uggla
wordonthestreet
Prado was in a package for Justin Upton and Chris Johnson. Not Uggla
MarlinsFanBase
That trade was Dan Uggla for Omar Infante and Mike Dunn. I admit, I was really disappointed that we only received Infante and Dunn for a 30-HR 2B, but after a year, I could not complain. Infante was decent, but nothing special. And Dunn was a guy who would have been okay as a secondary Lefty Specialist, but the Marlins placed him as one of our primary bullpen pieces, which hurt him and us many many many times. He wasn’t Renyel “Ford” Pinto bad, but he had moments when he did remind Marlins fans of him…which included the same trail of urine that went from the bullpen, to the mound, to the dugout, into the showers.
I don’t think either team enjoyed that trade very much. We may have won, but that was barely.
Alabama Braves Fan 8
Maybe the Braves will make him a minor league manager
ericm25
I’m so sad he’s retiring….what a Phillies killer, just always finds a way to kill the Phillies. again my heart is broken. I will miss all the hrs he had against the phillies all the clutch hits he won games for his team, etc. so long prado so long prado.
of course my kidding. thank goodness he’s packing up and never coming back unless he becomes a mgr. and picks up where is left off. gosh hope not.
chieflove42
people will never understand what an important figure he was in the club house.
