Latest On Hensley Meulens

By Steve Adams | November 13, 2019 at 7:30am CDT

WEDNESDAY: Heyman offers further clarification on the subject, via Twitter. Meulens had inked a letter of intent but not a full contract with the Marlins. The Miami club has allowed Meulens to pursue bench coach positions elsewhere. Whether or not he remains a candidate to land with the Fish remains to be seen.

TUESDAY: Meulens still hasn’t signed a contract with the Marlins, and while it’s possible he will, he could accept a bench coach job elsewhere instead, Heyman tweets.

MONDAY: Longtime Giants coach Hensley Meulens has accepted a position on the Marlins’ coaching staff, MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reported yesterday (Twitter link). He’ll join new bench coach and “offensive coordinator” James Rowson, recently hired away from the Twins, as another fairly high-profile coaching addition to the Miami staff. Exactly what role Meulens will fill in Miami isn’t yet clear, though SiriusXM’s Craig Mish suggested last week that Meulens could become the club’s hitting coach if hired.

Meulens, 52, has spent the past decade on the Giants’ coaching staff under the recently retired Bruce Bochy. He’s been bench coach for the past two year but previously served as the club’s hitting coach and was also responsible for outfield defense and positioning instruction. Meulens was the Giants’ hitting coach for each of their three World Series titles in 2010, 2012 and 2014.

Beyond his experience on the Giants’ MLB staff, Meulens has spent five seasons as a minor league hitting coach and served as the manager for Team Netherlands in both the 2013 and 2017 World Baseball Classics. Able to speak five languages, the Curacao native has frequently been mentioned as a possible managerial candidate at the MLB level and has interviewed for positions in each of the past few offseasons (including with the Giants last month).

Meulens, nicknamed “Bam Bam,” enjoyed a seven-year Major League career and also played professionally in Korea, Japan and Mexico before retiring in the early 2000s. He spent 1989-93 seasons with the Yankees, meaning he and and recently extended Miami skipper Don Mattingly have a longstanding relationship dating back to their playing days.

The Giants have still yet to name a new manager — they did name a GM over the weekend — but will now be on the lookout for a new bench coach (at the very least) whenever the successor to Bruce Bochy is ultimately appointed.

Good for him. Maybe after Mattingly leaves Miami, he can get a chance to manage. It just wasn’t meant to be in SF.

I know Jeter gets a lot of flak for maintaining a small payroll but this is according to plan with him rebuilding the team with respected experience coaching staff members promoting a new culture and philosophy.

I don’t understand why anyone thought they’d just spend $250m all the sudden. Jeter and co. bought a complete wreck of a franchise, of course they were going to strip it down to the frame and rebuild it from scratch.

Yelich, Ozuna, Gordon, Realmuto and Giancarlo Stanton… haha I wouldnt say they were a complete wreck. The way Jeter and Co stripped their franchise was pretty gross tho

          @ Frisco500

Miami couldn’t bear the cost of that team. Why is that so hard for some people to understand? Also, Yelich was not the player he is now. He haad topped out at like 21 HR’s in Miami. The people criticizing the rebuild conveniently ignore that, too. And look where Ozuna and Gordon have gone…

and a few bad contracts they needed to tare it up. now the 2003 team tare up was worst imo they had everything to be competetive for years.

Yelich marlins could afford . you have no case they could not.
when people want them to go after high cost people. .
people criticizing the rebuild have a right two. not once under loria rebuild did they finish last in nl east 2011 to 2013 they did . but 2011 and 12 was not rebuild years.

FYI, The Marlins already had Yelich signed long term and planned to build around him and Realmuto. However, both he and Realmuto demanded to be traded. The Marlins didn’t have to accommodate them, but Jeter and Co. made it clear that they didn’t want to keep anyone that didn’t want to be around for the rebuild. So, they traded Yelich, and after Realmuto rejected a long term deal, they traded him as well.

And anyone that will defend Loria is either uninformed of what that shady individual did to the Marlins after he did it to the Expos…or it’s a member of his family or circle of friends. Which are you? There is no way anyone could say that Loria did a better job than anyone. The only reason he has a ring today was due to the work of the previous regime.

Jeter and Co. is doing this the right way. Loria was in MLB lining up his pocket with the Marlins after he ran the Expos dry. He finally left the Marlins after he ran them dry with large contracts that he made sure would have deferred money that would kick in after he cashed in on the All Star Game, and he knew he would be gone after selling.

bam bam is a terrible coach who is horribly overrated and should have been fired by SF in 2016. Glad to see him gone. Suck for Miami tho.

He was an absolute terrible hitting coach. Maybe not as bad of a bench coach. Either way, I won’t miss him.

Saw BAMBAM hit majestic shots for the Albany Colonie Yanks in the early 90s. Heritage Park used to give out free beer during rain delays. It’s a long term parking lot now for Albany Airport

Clearly the Red Flags were the fact he was a hitting coach for a consistently bad hitting team. The Marlins seem like a good fit for him to start out.

If hes available I wouldnt mind the Phillies picking him up as our bench coach or hitting coach. Surprised Mike Scioscia’s name hasn’t been floating around more often. He’d make a good bench coach particularly for teams like the Mets who’ve hired inexperienced managers.

No farm? No pitching? Are you referring to the Marlins? They have a consensus too 10 farm system, maybe top 5 and they’ll be oozing with young pitching in 2020. Sixto Sanchez, Sandy Alcantara, Pablo Lopez, Caleb Smith, Nick Neidhart, Edward Cabrera, etc. Marlins will have a top 5 rotation come 2021.

somehow responded to wrong post. meant why the jeter regime blew it up. you have said it this team has pitching and up and coming hitters with team control. and they have done it with spending in the right places.
Foundation international draft and their whole infrastructure. loria only spent on show never on actual baseball.
