It’s time for the MLB Trade Rumors Free Agent Prediction Contest! Click here to enter your picks for the destinations for our top 50 free agents. The deadline for entry tonight – Monday, November 11th at 11pm central time. You can edit your picks until then. Further contest info:
- After the window to make picks has closed, we’ll post a public leaderboard page so you can see who’s winning the contest as players sign with teams. We’re going to use entrants’ full names on it. So, if that concerns you, please do not enter the contest. Entries with inappropriate names will be deleted.
- We are also collecting email addresses, which I will use to notify winners. I may also use those email addresses to notify you of next year’s free agent prediction contest.
- If a player signs between now and the close of the contest, that’s a freebie, but you still need to go in and make the correct pick.
- After you submit your picks, you’ll receive an email from Google Forms. In that email, you’ll see a button that allows you to edit your picks.
- We will announce the winners on MLBTR once all 50 free agents have signed. We will award $500 to first place, $300 to second place, and $100 to third place. Winners must respond to an email within one week.
- Ties in the correct number of picks will be broken by summing up the rankings of the free agents of the correct picks and taking the lower total. For example: Tim and Steve each get two picks correct. Tim gets Gerrit Cole (#1 ranking) and Tanner Roark (#20 ranking) for a total of 21 points. Steve gets Madison Bumgarner (#6) and Dallas Keuchel (#14) for a total of 20 points. Steve’s total is lower and he’s ahead of Tim for tiebreaker purposes.
If you have any further questions, ask us in the comment section of this post! Otherwise, make your picks now!
Here we go! Let’s get better than 3 this year!
hahahaha
I myself feel pretty confident I’ll get at LEAST two correct!!!
We all get 1 if Waino finishes his new deal with the Cards!
If you finish it you win.
Only made it through 11 picks then realized I have a life
So let me get this straight: your life consists of starting but not finishing a contest you obviously have interest in, then presumably reading about this new update on the contest that you decided you weren’t interested in, then leaving a comment about how you’re too busy (or too cool or whatever) to actually enter the contest you started and then commented on? Hmm, interesting.
Also, how much time do you think it takes?
you only made it through 11? why? to feel edgy? then you proceeded to come in the comment section to write a post about not finishing it because you have “a life”? You dont seem to have much of a life by going this route bud.
You really went all out in this one for attention didnt ya?
I love to take your money in paid fantasy sports. No greater joy.
@Freddy
Because you only have heard of 11 players? You do not have enough baseball knowledge to attempt to enter the contest. You tried. You failed. Now you try to make fun at those we actually enter the contest because they find it fun and have the knowledge to do so and goes to your insecurities.
Hey, 11 is good for a guy who has the same IQ level
I usually do these in April. Last year I only missed two or there.
Maybe I’ll do it in November this year, but I don’t think I’ll have the same success rate.
i believe in you dude
I take it you missed on Keuchel and Kimbrel’s landing places?
If i get 5 then i’ll be on the rise over last year.
i dont like my chances this year. half of my correct predictions from last year were obvious (Holland) or just blind luck (Soria)
Look on the bright side:
It shouldn’t be hard to improve on 2!
…based on MY interpretation of your comment
😉
If a pick happens before the 11th and we go and change it to the correct pick, do we get credit for that?
They said it’s just a freebie, so we get credit for it (if you change it to the correct team)
Yup.
I just say Yankees for all and hope to get at least 5 right
I went Nationals for about every RP with the same hope! (laffing)
All OFs to the Giants here.
Ya know, I feel like that’s what the MLBTR guys did this time. In the past, it seems like they picked players on a more individual basis, independent of other moves. So the teams were a bit more spread out. This time, they seemed to kind of hedge their bets a bit more. For example, I highly doubt that MLBTR believes that BOTH stras and rendon will return, but because the likelihood that ONE will is very high, they chose WAS for both. Similar to your Yankees plan. Or similar to the fact that the Twins will not sign all these players, nor will the Reds likely get Grandal AND didi, but both teams WILL be aggressive so MLBTR just loaded up on those teams. I believe they claimed that they didn’t take this approach, but it definitely seems like they leaned more this way than they have before. Must be they are trying to get more than 7 correct this time around 🙂 …
I have no doubt that I will lose this contest. But going to have fun with it none the less.
Best part of the offseason! Glad they didnt toy with us and hold out for months like last year!
I can’t wait to see how bad I did!!
Must one by 18 to enter contest
No, but one must have a general sense of English in order to read a player’s name and match it to a team.
lol missed that, but asking because contests with money prices 95% require a participant to be 18
I think it’s more like 86%
I think I could beat my previous scores by giving every pitcher to the Angels, knowing that I’d have to get at least a couple of them right.
I entered the contest about an hour ago, but haven’t received an email with my picks. Is there a lag time on this?
No, I just tested it and got the email instantly. Maybe check your spam? If it still doesn’t work, please reach out to us through the contact form so we can look into it.

Do we need to enter our actual names or can we enter alias (as long as not inappropriate)? Must it be real name to collect prize money?
You could do an alias and still be eligible for prize money.
I got mine right away.
Being an Angel fan and a procrastinator, I picked Matt Harvey, Trevor Cahill and Cody Allen to the As in mid April.
I really wish I would have been right.
Time to take the annual stab in the dark!
You sound like Al Bundy.
Or Ted Bundy
I wish we had the bonus ball picks of anyone signing after the First-Year Draft. Any guesses who gets left in the cold?
The Angels are going to get Cole because he is from California guaranteed.
The Angels are going to get Strasburg because he is from California guaranteed.
The Angels are going to get Rendon because he is friends with Strasburg guaranteed.
The Angels are going to get Wheeler because he once said he likes In and Out Burger guaranteed.
If you don’t agree you are a hater.
Can’t argue with the logic here!
I saw Grandal wear a Mickey Mouse shirt before. Surely that means he’s Angels bound too.
The Miami Marlins will NOT sign Anthony Rendon.
When will I receive my check?
It’s in the mail!
What were the winning totals last year?
the $500 winner predicted four.
Some of the Scroll Downs don’t Work? Anybody else have this problem?
Got it rebooted
Contests like this are what keep loyal readers coming back. You guys have developed a great community and I’m sure I speak for all here when I say thank you for all your hard work!!
NO COPYING ANSWERS!!! Keep your eyes on your own spreadsheet.
Gee whizz, Dad!
I missed this last year. Glad I found it
Can we enter with two different emails? Asking for a friend.
Do you or your “friend” get to keep the winnings?
I remember when Kurt Suzuki to the Nats was the freebie last year. He was first to sign I think. Funny what dividends that signing made!
Is there a way after the contest closes on Monday to follow my picks? My memory isn’t goof enough to remember all 50. Ha ha
no
Yes – we’ll have a leaderboard available. Also you’ll get an email that will show your picks.
It’s go time.
I accidentally searched for Shoko instead of “Shogo” Akiyama. Interesting results….
No link
Ah, the MLBTR Free Agent Contest.
The cosmic ballet………goes on.
One could assemble a pretty good team from these free agents.
Two writers on MLB.com did an exercise of that.
mlb.com/news/drafting-teams-from-2019-20-free-agen…
i have my doubts about the Nats signing all of Rendon, Stras, Hudson, and Kendrick, but i feel good about them getting at least 2.
After the deadline, can you guys release a chart showing the most predicted landing spot for each player? I know it might be hard, but it would be interesting to look at.
they released at least one article with the predictions last year.
mlbtraderumors.com/2019/11/mlb-free-agent-predicti…
That’s mlb trade rumors predictions. What I’m talking about is like who was voted where the most. Like where did most people pin Gerrit Cole going?
oh i see, my bad. yeah that would be interesting to see what people were thinking.
They could do a summary of votes at the end of it.
It’ll be interesting to see how well the “collective wisdom” did.
This is the first year I’ve done it. It was a lot of fun.
It’s pretty hard, tbh. Trying to think of the teams that will spend then realizing that you left out another team THEN you look at your final picks and realize a certain team or two didn’t do enough as you think they’re going to. A real head spinner man.
Totally agree.
Tried to factor in way too many things. Ended up just trusting my gut. Ended up with quite a strange balance. I gave 3 players to KC, and BAL while giving 0 to TB and BOS.among other headscratchers. Decided against doing an extra edit the night before but feeling like that was a bad idea.
I’m using a different approach this year. Whereas in prior years I tried (and failed miserably) to predict where each player is going to sign, this year I’m gonna focus on team needs and select multiple options for each team. For instance, my Braves need a catcher, so I selected Grandal, Chirinos, and D’Arnaud. The gNats need a 3B so I chose Rendon, Donaldson and Moustakas. One of those has to be right!
first year for me so i did strictly gut feelings
Some interesting picks I made:
Donaldson-Brewers
Bumgarner-Braves
Betances-Cubs
Keuchel-Cardinals
Hamels-Padres
Personally i think Rendon/Stras will be back with the Nats with Cole gong to the Angels.
that’s probably the best approach, it just feels like a very boring one. ive considered the idea, but just cant make myself do it.
I felt pretty good about mine until I realized I had the Dodgers, Angels, Red Sox, Houston, and Yankees signing a total of zero guys. I guess I’m expecting San Diego and the Nats to sign every free agent available evidently.
I ran into that with the Phillies. Here they’ve got a pile of money to spend on SP’s and I initially had them getting — no one. Argghhh. Little re-edit. Looks like no freebies coming out today. Was wondering how much one signing might cause some cascading in my choices….
This is challenging. I keep wondering about teams who should be in a forced position to make some moves. Sure to be some surprises!
Looking to break my single-season record of 5.
I went with ten going overseas. No way I’m winning this thing
aaaaaaand I forgot to enter -_-
It would be nice to know how many entrants there are and to actually see the current progress now that the first FA (Wainwright) has come off the board
First year playing… do they not run a current progress anywhere?
Hmmm….
Same.
Pretty sure they’ll do update posts throughout the offseason. Still super early. 5/50 signed.
Looks like last year’s leaderboard post was on Dec. 31 after 21/50 had signed. 6731 entries. Probably a similar amount of entries for this year. That’s a lot to process, hope they have some automation involved.
Winner had 13 correct last year assuming the leaderboard link is accurate.

The email showing my entries is very helpful. Almost instantly forgot most of my picks.
Is there a way to see who you submitted? I can’t remember all 50
