The Dodgers have declined their $13MM team option on infielder Jedd Gyorko (h/t to Ken Gurnick of MLB.com). He’ll instead receive a $1M buyout.
Today’s news is hardly unexpected. While LA acquired Gyorko from the Cardinals at the trade deadline to bolster their right-handed bench depth, he was never especially likely to cement himself as a long-term option. Injuries limited the veteran to 101 plate appearances between St. Louis and LA, and he was a shell of himself at the plate. Gyorko’s .174/.248/.250 line (36 wRC+) is hardly the platform season he would’ve liked.
That said, Gyorko was a productive player as recently as 2018. Each year from 2016-18, he was around ten percentage points better than a league average hitter. Nothing about his performance jumped off the page, but he was quietly a well-rounded player. Gyorko drew walks at a solid clip, struck out at an average rate, and hit for slightly above-average power. Toss in average defensive metrics at second and third base, and Gyorko was a solid everyday player, albeit not the most exciting.
While Gyorko has some shortstop experience, he’ll presumably be viewed as an insurance option at the corner infield and at second base by suitors. Second base, especially, is rife with veterans who will draw interest on short-term deals, and Gyorko certainly fits in that mix. Still just 31 with productive seasons in the not-too-distant past, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him find a major league deal this winter, although it’ll assuredly be for less than the value of the option the Dodgers declined.
And this is surprising, because…..?
The post didn’t say it was surprising.
But it is news…..
The news will be when he signs to play in Japan.
Who said it had to be surprising?
I guess that I need to make my sarcasm a bit more obvious
Your sarcasm was obvious but pointless
I enjoyed it.
Your “sarcasm” contributed nothing to the post. Funny how people will say sarcasm if nobody likes their comment.
Funny how people sometimes have to explain sarcasm to folks who have no sense of humor. Now where did I park?

Is anyone on this thread a fan of the song “Fat” by Weird AL Yankovic?
Second paragraph begins with “Today’s news is hardly unexpected.”
Sun Devil – stop wasting our time with dumb posts, please.
Bad Move!
Ok
I am unbelievably shocked and saddened by this news. He was the MVP of the Dodgers last year.
Cody who?
Ross
Jerk store is the line! Jerk store!
Bahahahaha
Cleveland takes fliers on guys just like him.
Is Gyorko better than what we’ve seen in recent years from Kipnis?
Maybe a better question to ask (with no guarantee of answering it correctly) is who projects to be more effective going forward,Gyorko or Kipnis?
Of course, the Tribe need not limit itself to only these two options. There are other candidates besides Gyorko and Kipnis.
My long shot choice for 2B? Mark Mathias.
Every team in baseball looks at guys like him.. Utility guys that can hit. He may not be a glove at any position worth talking about, but he has hit well much of his career
Imagine he ends up with a MLB deal for sub 5m before ST. Not as much as glove guy 1st Holt, but he’ll get paid decent.
No guarantee he’ll have a healthy 2020, but he’d be a nice bench piece to have. I don’t think we could offer more than 2-3M though, we’ll see what the Friedman offseason plan looks like soon.
There’s no guarantee anyone will have a healthy 2020.
Technically, you’re right. Someone get this man a prize. I’m just saying, an injury plagued year doesn’t inspire a vote of confidence for a big contract.
How do I claim the prize
If he’s able to heal up all of his injuries he had over the offseason I think he could have a bounce back year next year. I could see him hitting .270/.345/.455 with 25 homers. Might be a good 3B option for the Rangers if they miss out on Rendon or Donaldson. If they go that route hopefully they end up with two good starting pitchers off the free agent market.
The Padres locked him up early and couldn’t deal with his sophomore slump. I guess San Diego is just part of an alternate universe. They go all in on people that are just way overpaid, and they still do! Hosmer & Myers, namely. We’ll see about Machado.

Padres love to lock a guy up after one good season. That’s how surprised they are by success
Funny because the other team who does it more than them traded for him in the St Louis Cardinals. They lock up every random rookie who has a breakout season and half of them seem to pan out.
Dodgers are going to miss those five hits he got for them.
Come on, he’s not too bad of a player. Barring a major resurgence or “comeback player of the year” 2020 season, he’s probably at that point in his career where he goes from team to team for a few years until he retires.
Perfect guy to go to Japan for a full time role to show how many bombs he can hit as a regular.
I’d be shocked if he had to do that. He was awful last year, but that is coming off of three straight above average seasons. I’m sure there will be some team that tries to buy low on him and get rewarded.
I think the Pirates will sign him for one year 3-5 million as a platoon at third with Moran and to give Adam Frazier at second and Bell at first some days off.
as a giants fan who watches the nl west all season, i never even noticed gyorko was on the Dodgers in the first place
He was the ping pong champ in the Cardinals clubhouse.
Jedd is solid in roles he’s put to succeed. Definitely as guy who plays and PH against lefties. Play him when he’s hot. More like a guy who gets about 350-450 PA max but more like a guy who deserves 300 PA.
Not knowing what will happen in the off season in regards to trades and signings. Teams like Texas, Baltimore, KC, Miami, Seattle, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh should be interested if the price is right.
The Yankees should express some interest in Gyorko if Didi Gregorius leaves the Yankees. Not sure if he’s open to take a backup role though.
Mr. Gyorko made more money in 2018 alone then 99% of the kids on here making fun of him and dissing him will in their entire lifetimes.
Jedd, is that you?
Than, not then…Jedd.
oh damn you owned everyone, rich people are so much better than the rest of us
What’s your point? That’s like saying someone who wins a Gold Glove is actually a great defensive player.
Lol you could say the same thing about any MLB player. The league minimum salary is up to over 600k per year now.
Then again,, that money is fleeting. You can only play for so many years.
Like to see the Reds take a chance on him. Him being a former WVU guy. I could see either the Reds or Pirates take a look at Jedd.
Gyorko has had injury problems the past 2 plus seasons. Mainly leg issues. I could see a team that’s in need of a utilityman or a platoon player going after him. Perhaps the Pirates to platoon with Moran at 3rd. 3rd is probably his best position, but he handles 2nd well enough and can play 1st & SS as well. Though SS isn’t ideal for him.
I could see a 1/4 contract for him with a possible club option at the same rate.
A reunion with the Cards as a utility IF like what they did Scott Speizio, Descalso and Skip Schumacher. A team friendly deal I would love to have him back.
Now if anybody didn’t see this coming then they are completely blind
Lux takes 2nd and both Hernandez and Taylor are utility guys unless one is traded for a bullpen arm.
Gyorko decline means the LA Dodgers can be serious players for Strasburg and Cole with some money to spare.
