Former Padres skipper Andy Green will be named the new bench coach for the Cubs, per Jesse Rogers of ESPNChicago.com (via Twitter). Jon Heyman of MLB Network tweeted that Green was expected to be tapped after he was linked to the job through reports earlier this week.
Green becomes the top lieutenant under new Cubs manager David Ross, who is turning over a major portion of his staff. Last year’s bench coach, Mark Loretta, will leave the Chicago organization, Heyman adds via Twitter. Loretta, like Green, came from San Diego.
It seems the Cubs preferred to provide Ross with an experienced manager at his right hand, as this’ll be his first-ever season in charge of a dugout. Green helmed the Friars for almost four full seasons and also did the in-game decisionmaking before that in the minor-leagues.
laughingduck
Why didn’t Theo just hire Green to manage and Ross to be bench coach? Things are looking up.
Do you really think Ross would have accepted a job as bench coach?
What, he had leverage because of all his managing experience?
No, because he doesn’t have to manage or coach at all. He had a good gig at ESPN
Who the hell is David Ross?
Go home, Ty. You’re drunk…
Okay see you tomorrow.
He’s ty cobbs brothers uncles son’s sister-mother
Andy green can show Cubs new ways to lose games.
In over his head as a manager, but a solid hire as a bench coach, particularly under a guy who hasn’t managed before.
Should be better than Loretta.
When I read some of the criticisms Loretta had with Maddon’s management style, I had a feeling he might be next to go. I still think he has a future as a skipper in the MLB, but I do think having a more experienced bench coach will be a plus for rookie manager Ross.
Andy is a good guy. Not sure he is cut out to be a manager, but it’s impossible to tell. All he got todo in 4 years in SD was be a scapegoat.
Does he get paid twice now since his Padres contract runs through 2021?
Yes. The Padres are paying him for the next two years to not manage for them.
Padres will pay the difference between his Cubs salary and what he would have made in SD. He doesn’t get to double dip on full salaries for both.
That’s MLB player salary rules, but coaches. Likely he gets full pay from the Padres, plus whatever from the Cubs.
That’s what I was trying to find out…
I was thinking same thing. I think NBA used to be different Doug Moe was getting paid by like 4 teams
Andy Green is a smart guy, but wasn’t really put in a position to succeed in San Diego. Will probably make a good bench coach.
agreed. dont think he quite got the chance to prove his coaching ability. i might bet we’ll see him managing again at some point in the future.
I don’t know why you are all defending green. He is awful and clueless
Come on guys let’s get the scouting report. Can he position players well? Does he have good communication skills? Did he have a baseball career anywhere playing?
It’s called google
Can google tell us if Green has good communication skills?
Its hard to get punked by the other manager when your a bench coach..
I would have liked to see someone with a little more credentials than him. I still think he are just swapping chairs. No really new people added to the Cubs. Just the people who share the same philosophy. Like restructuring the player development by making new titles and promoting existing people who contributed to the lack of player development in the last 3 yers.
There’s not much more you could ask for than a former manager becoming your bench coach. You’re not going to get an accomplished former manager to take a bench coach job.
Ron Washington.
Don Zimmer found a good gig as Yankees bench coach. Now we could perhaps wonder whether Popeye was an “accomplished former manager,” but he managed a good while in high profile jobs before doing the bench coach thing.
Hire an inexperienced manager with a clueless former manager as bench coach. It’s good to read the Cubs are moving forward.
Blow it out your Bryant, fool. Good move all around.
Says some guy on the internet named SoCalStuntman…..
How much experience did Aaron Boone have?
I think he is perfect for the job. Good for him
Wow, another person from the Padres organization. A shocker! Guess it sbetter than someone from Boston.. or is it?
This should be okay for the Cubs, but it says a lot about SD.
Green rebuilds their franchise with the likes of many players in the “where are they now” category. Funny how this happened right after calling up a 20 year-old and spending for Machado.
Like school in the summer-time, no class.
Hahaha this is the stupidest thing ever.
I mean they could hire David Ross to be the manager. Dream team lmao.
Only thing as stupid as this is the Mets hiring Beltran as the manager
I have a feeling Ross won’t last long—cubs are in for a tough season.
Obsess over the Cubs much??? lol
Agreed!
Stunt boy… How bout them Dodgers? Oh, wait.
Was supposed to be a dynasty. Instead they got a 3-year window.
I don’t know where you learned how to count, but 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018… Looks like FOUR years out of the last 5 and not 3… Even dynasties can miss the playoffs once or twice in a decade.
Dynasty’s win multiple championships, not just 1. This group is no dynasty.
Well, the world hasn’t ended, right? Cause as far as I know…. There are more chances ahead to win another one.
And… No team has won more than one WS since the Cubs won in 2016…. So, by that token, there’s no current dynasty righ now.
Ice cold koolaid here! Ice cold!
Why am I not surprised coming from a chisox fan?
Im just talking facts
“And… No team has won more than one WS since the Cubs won in 2016…. So, by that token, there’s no current dynasty righ now.”
Yes, that is correct… And… I don’t recall any other fanbase saying they had a dynasty after winning 1 WS.
Are you sure? Cause you are speaking for A LOT of people… Personally… I’ve seen other fanbases claim such things… I’m just not obsessed about it like some people seem to be.
Surprised Pads Fans/Koamalu/outinleftfield/ websoulsurfer/WatermelonMtnScout/The Padfather hasn’t commented on this yet.
A few more of these Epstein moves and the Reds can move ahead of the Cubs if they have a decent off-season.
Still think they should have hired Young to manage and Green as bullpen coach and Ross as bench coach.
The San Diego connections (Epstein, Ross, Green) will guarantee a winner. Their castoffs do well.
Hope they survive… http://www.heyjackass.com
