The Brewers have claimed righty Eric Yardley off waivers from the Padres, per a club announcement. While the MLB.com transactions page indicates that Yardley was released, he evidently had not yet cleared release waivers.
With the move, the Milwaukee club will hand a 40-man spot over to an intriguing sidearmer who could compete for a bullpen job in camp. Yardley doesn’t have much MLB experience but was able to make it through 11 2/3 frames with just three earned runs in his 2019 debut.
Yardley’s low-velo offerings have proven effective over a longer run in the upper minors. He recorded 63 2/3 frames of 2.83 ERA pitching at Triple-A last year, racking up a 63.8% groundball rate while limiting the long ball (0.42 HR/9) and carrying 7.4 K/9 against 2.0 BB/9.

I remember asking that exact same question about Orel Hershiser when I was a little kid.

Does anybody know if we are going to get a Friday night chat tonight? I want to ask about Will Smith, Darren O’Day, Shelby Miller, and electronic strike zones. I haven’t heard the schedule but they had a Friday night chat last week so I hope it happens. I figure the Will Smith question will come up anyway so I really want to ask about the other 3 things that I have been asking but never get responded to.

I thought he was released. So was he signed or claimed?
DarkSide830
seems to be the latter, otherwise it’s an odd screw-up by the transactions pages.

The MLB transactions page is shockingly unreliable with remarkable frequency in the offseason.
Col_chestbridge
Anytime a player is released they go on “release waivers” where any team can pick them up and add them to their organization. The reason for doing this is that you get to keep a guy paid minimum rate, whereas a minor or major league free agent would make more money. Most of the time this doesnt matter as if a player is released by a team he’s been deemed unworthy for a reason. Which is why this is a curious transaction.

The Padres have no 40 man spots and Yardley wasn’t going to fit so it makes sense why they DFA’ed him. I guess they could have tried to outright to AAA, but maybe they just figured he was never going to fit in their roster so they cut him loose?
Its not like he’s on a guaranteed contract so I don’t get how the finances here matter. Isn’t he getting league minimum either way?

Brewers have had a huge love for side-arm pitchers for as long as I’ve been alive, usually they produce solid results. Will be interesting to see how Yardley pans out for us
Metsfan9
Decent pickup. This year should test whether he’s a fluke or not

I gotta admit I like this pick up. I wonder if this will affect the resigning of Jackson. Wish the Brewers would add the rule 5 eligable players. I wonder if Rasmussen , Oszlack, Greip, Brown, Gatewood, Erceg, Ray will be added . I dont think Rasmussen has to be added yet. Griep I honestly think he should get a shot with another team. Gatewood could be a sleeper as helping at first and third this year.
DarkSide830
i can tell you for a fact that they do not need to protect Erceg or Gatewood.
esjek21
I don’t think this has anything to do with Jackson. Yardley is a career minor leaguer who isn’t going to see a MLB roster. This was depth at San Antonio.
lowtalker1
How can the brewers claim yardley if the padres released him?
stubby66
Because when players are released, they are offered to all major league teams to claim. If a team picks him up he then has to be put on 40 man roster if he was on someone else’s 40 man. Then if they arent claimed then they become free agents .

With the new rules regarding pitchers, he is not going to be going in as a specialist.
So, the shock of a different release point will probably lose its effectiveness. What he does have is the tutelage of Darren Balsley.

I like the low risk move. Gives Counsel another intriguing bullpen arm similar to Wahl, D. Guerra, Black, Faria and Feyeriesen any of them could wind up being a solid contributor next season.
esjek21
After Faria’s horrible showing I don’t think the Brewers keep him. He is out of options and as bad as he was, they have 7-8 better options for the pen. Yardley is not going to make it out of S.T. He’s depth at San Antonio at best, a career minor leaguer… CC will have to make a decision on Black because he also doesn’t have any options left. Wahl may pan out but could be slated for San Antonio to start with. Feyeriesen is intriguing. He was a closer in the Yankee organization and has skills. D. Guerra has a very small chance of making the roster, depending on the number of pitchers they can keep.

I think an Eric Yardley is when you fart while gardening
