The Angels announced that they have claimed righty Mike Mayers off waivers from the Cardinals. The out of options hurler will compete for a pen job in camp if he can stick on the Los Angeles 40-man roster the rest of the winter.
Mayers, 27, is coming off of a forgettable campaign in St. Louis. He was given just 19 innings, over which he allowed 14 earned runs with a 16:11 K/BB ratio. In his 80 2/3 total frames at the game’s highest level, Mayers has worked to a 7.03 ERA.
Though the results clearly haven’t been there at the game’s highest level, Mayers has shown a mid-nineties fastball. He has also been quite effective at Triple-A. This past year, he turned in twenty frames of 3.15 ERA pitching there with 24 strikeouts and seven walks.
Mike Mayers needed a change in scenery. He will serve the Angles well.
I liked mayers, really never got an extended look last year. I havent seen it anywhere, but does anybody know who else the cards dropped from the 40 man roster?
Appeared in 50 games with 52 innings pitched in 2018. That’s a very extended look. He just wasn’t good even when holding a walk rate which was clearly a fluke low
I said last year he didnt get an extended look, not 2018. He cant be worse than dominic leone, who hopefully is also gone
He was indeed worse than Leone, who also has a much better overall Major League track record. On top of that, Mayers was out of options, while Leone wasn’t.
Joe Hudson, C. They outrighted him to Memphis.
If by serving them well you mean fetching sunflower seeds and bubble gum for Mike Trout then yes he will serve them well.
So we’re still junk pile shopping. Wonderful
Hey Angel’s fans there’s your big off season signing. Literally.
You have issues.
I know you’re joking, but this isn’t a signing. At least get that part correct.
He just goes from thread to thread ripping the Angels. As I said, he has issues.
Maybe he rips other teams as well.
Ah, the man with the worst MLB debut in history (so far).
Dumpster diving can pay off. Way early into off season to judge
Robles and Noe Ramirez were dumpster dives.
I think most teams dumpster dive for RPs. A few work out. Most don’t.
According to pitch FX. 95MPH fastball. I’m not sure where the Angels think he’s got a chance to find command though. Bullpen wise, they have had success looking for Diamonds in the rough, but he’s really really rough.
He may just still be a lump of coal
He’s probably going to be a lump of coal. Probably.
Mayers was the guy who in his first appearance in the majors as a starter gave up 9 ER in 1.1 IP against the Dodgers.
He’s prone to giving up some big innings. If he can figure that out he could be a back end bullpen guy but I never saw anything that AAAA filler. Maybe a change will help but I wouldn’t bank on it.
Calhoun got Teheran ???
This organization loves anything above a 5 ERA…. this cat was a beautiful 6 this past year and a lifetime ERA above 7. Another solid move by a solid organization….
The typical response.
Maybe Eppler binge watched the Halloween movies and thought he picked up Mike Meyers.
This guy has a high upside. I believe you Angel fans are going to be surprised. This got has talent and may be a great addition to your bullpen.
Only on Halloween can a guy named Michael Meyers, er Mayer get signed.
Oh behave
Well played, sir.
I know his numbers don’t look great but the guy can pitch…and that mid nineties fastball is 98-99…honestly I never understood how he couldn’t put it together…I’m thinking somebody can turn him around…plus it’s cheap…worth the look and a good pick up
That’s the point: he can’t pitch, only throw. He has velocity but no command.
Mayer’s does not have curveball and no good change up.
Eppler has a good eye and with our new pitching coach, he may find his groove. He’s still young so I’m optimistic until he proves otherwise for us. Depth is always good.
High velocity fastball is Eppler’s calling card. He says it so many times nobody should be surprised any more.
He throws really hard, unfortunately his pitches lack any sort of movement. AAAA relief until he figures it out. Good luck.
That’s 4 As.
AAAA refer to players that are all-star AAA players but can’t survive on a major league roster.
Just in case you didn’t know.
I didn’t know. Thanks.
looks like much of the same from Billy Eppler, hard throwing pitchers who have ERA’s in the high 7’s. Go out and sign and accomplished pitcher, quit signing these hacks that are on their last leg.
At this point folks, ya never know. Maybe this guy will pan out to be at least as reliable as a Noe Ramirez or Bedrosian- neither of which were as horrific this year as in seasons past
