Since the conclusion of the regular season, a number of players have elected free agency. That right accrues to certain players who are outrighted off of a 40-man roster during or after the season — namely, those that have at least three years of MLB service and/or have previously been outrighted. Such players that accepted outright assignments during the season have the right to elect free agency instead at season’s end, provided they aren’t added back to the 40-man in the meantime.
Here are the position players that have recently taken to the open market, along with their now-former teams (via the International League and PCL transactions pages):
- Jim Adduci, OF, Cubs
- Aaron Altherr, OF, Mets
- Rob Brantly, C, Phillies
- Wilkin Castillo, C, Marlins
- Isaac Galloway, OF, Marlins
- Dustin Garneau, C, Athletics
- Juan Graterol, C, Reds
- Gorkys Hernandez, OF, Red Sox
- Oscar Hernandez, C, Red Sox
- Rafael Lopez, C, Braves
- Deven Marrero, INF, Marlins
- Peter O’Brien, OF, Marlins
- Jace Peterson, IF/OF, Orioles
- Yadiel Rivera, 3B, Marlins
- JB Shuck, OF, Pirates
- Jesus Sucre, C, Orioles
- Blake Swihart, C/OF, Diamondbacks
- Beau Taylor, C, Athletics
- Charlie Tilson, OF, White Sox
- Bobby Wilson, C, Tigers

That list is like The Who’s who of bad players. Minus 1 or 2…. even so though
rayrayner
Peter O’Brien, Blake Swihart…where’s Rob Refsnyder to complete the unholy trinity?
soup94
Lol
Not Xabial
Wilfredo Tovar, Angels as well
brewcat
Add Hernan Perez.
Ully
Anyone need a backup catcher?
keysox
You mean a bullpen catcher
Ully
Greatest job in all of sports.
jd396
Red Sox should look into Blake Swihart
DarkSide830
old habits die hard
stevewpants
That should be the name of the next Die Hard movie and Bruce Willis has to go undercover in a convent like Whoopi Goldberg in Sister Act 2.
Dotnet22
This. Please Hollywood, make this happen.
schellis 2
The convent is a front for a extremely overly complicated bank heist that they’ve been working on for year. The leader of the group is obviously Hans Grubers sister, wife, or mother.. McClains estrained wife of course has to join the convent and he’s there to talk her out of it where he finds out that not only are some of the nuns massive men, but they also have a armory that is the size of some small countries.
It ends with him telling the head nun she’s been excommunicated.

Wow!
Awesome!
GabeOfThrones
I have time for that.
Eightball611
A traded him 4 a reason
DarkSide830
id like to see Altherr back in the Phillies system. he could have a future as a pitcher.
keysox
Tilson will get A gig
Nick Papagiorgio
I think anyone on this list (or any random list of names) could have a future as a Phillies pitcher.
keysox
Need a catcher
phamdownbytheriver
I’d be surprised if more than one or two gets a roster spot next year and shocked if they actually keep it.
phamdownbytheriver
Maybe Swihart will be the next d’Arnaud for the Rays when they don’t want to pay him. Gotta keep the payroll under 70 mil!
dlevin11
Fun Fact — Sale, Price and Eovaldi together make almost the same money as the entire Tampa Bay payroll.
Michael Birks
Fun fact winning is important to the RS…. up there with fan attendance
CFAP
Where is Roger Dorn?
stevewpants
When was he outrighted?
BravesCanada
In his solarium
neo
Let me ask Jobu.
dantheman1997
I thought graterol was assigned to triple A ?
casualatlfan
He was outrighted to it, but because he’s previously been outrighted, he has the option to refuse it and go to free agency.
algionfriddo
Devin Mesoraco still under the thumb of the Mets? That sure worked out well for all. Mets choose random hill to die on.
metsie1
Only one who lost was Mesoraco. He didn’t want to abide by his contract and he had zero value anyway.
Robert George
The Jim Adduci wra comes to an end in Chicago. Theo said there would be changes!
DarkSide830
poor Aducci was actually a decent bench bat in 2018. seems like a guy who could stick in Miami.
macstruts
If you sign them all, you might be able to fill a AAA team that wins half their games.
neo
Little heavy on the backstops and outfielders. Going to convert one of these guys to shortstop?
hiflew
Well you have Marrero and Peterson for the middle infield, Rivera for thrd and apparently anyone can play first base, so I think it is covered.
terry g
Lots of backup catchers on this list.
frankf
Japan, I’m looking in your direction.
douglasb
add Crash Davis
mattblaze13
Good depth for anyone
Saint Chris
If I’m one of these guys, I’m spending my entire off-season changing my swing. It’s time to hunt down Joey Bats’, JDM’s, Donaldson’s, or even LaStella or Sogard’s personal hitting coach.
El Duderino
I wonder how many of these players will draw rave reviews on their defense?
stubby66
I would like to see someone to just put Swihart behind the dish and let him concentrate on it even if he struggles some. Let him just settle in.Now the Brewers do need some depth up the middle like Rivera and Peterson. Be interesting if Austin sticks with the Brewers. If Brewers dont resign Moose which I believe they will, they should go after Matt Duffy for third base .
ToolsyOutfielders
Half expected yet another article on the White Sox home page about how Tilson is part of the long-term plan, and yet another paragraph about his bad luck with injuries…
mario crosby
Looks like the Pirates have their free agent signing list ready to go.
