The Phillies have claimed righty Robert Stock off waivers from the Padres. Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reported the move (Twitter link), which was first aired on Twitter by Tyler Poitras.
Stock, who is closing in on his 30th birthday, finished the season on the 60-day injured list due to a biceps injury. The San Diego club faces tough decisions on several players with a rather tight 40-man roster squeeze.
Though Stock failed to follow up on his strong 2018 debut in a tepid 2019 effort, he showed the same upper-nineties heat that made him so intriguing. He also managed to rack up forty strikeouts in 28 1/3 Triple-A innings. While he has struggled throughout his professional career to stay in the zone, Stock obviously has big-time stuff.

So the Phillies are investing in Stock…
phils phanatic
better to invest in Bonds

Love it!!!

I mean, if he can do what he did in 2018 yeah I’ll take him! High upside for a waiver claim.
zippytms
Certainly high upside. This year he gave up a ton of walks and hits, but if he can get that magic back the Phillies will have a good pitcher and a good dude.
ForestCobraAL
I remember when Stock was a catching prospect.
His stock has dropped.
Sorry.
DarkSide830
you might be clamped in ths stocks for that pun!

Who else read it as Robert Stack at first?

He wouldn’t be put on waivers, he’s untouchable..
coach him
Klentek keeps Stock-ing up on AAAA players.

I thought Stock was a catcher or corner Infielder….obviously, I’m thinking of someone else
zippytms
He was drafted as a catcher. The Cardinals converted him to a pitcher after a couple of years of struggles and later released him. He played indy ball and then one offseason embarked on a quest to throw 100mph. He finally did it and the YouTube video caught the attention of scouts, eventually signing with the Padres. We were excited for him when he came up and looked like a dominant reliever in the making late in 2018.
Last year, whatever he was doing to pound the zone and miss bats disappeared. The velo and stuff was there but he gave up a ton of walks and hits. If the Phillies can get him back on track he still can throw gas. He’s a nice guy and his wife is awesome too. We wish him the best of luck.

I thought he was great playing Elliot Ness…..
Man, I’m old……

Best of luck Robert. Was a good piece for a bit, but his control is below average, hence his demotion to El Paso.

If, if, if… this is nothing more than a aaa roster filler. Why is anyone still impressed with upper 90’s velocity and the inability to consistently throw strikes? How about 93 with great control of 4 pitches? Oh wait, those guys don’t get drafted anymore…or maybe they don’t exist BECAUSE they don’t get noticed.
Wolverines2
Let me know about the sextet guys you are aware of who are throwing 93 with command of 4 quality pitches.
Sincerely,

ps Your point is understood but not really accurate.

Sorry…”secret.”

First stat I look for : Is the person alive. Just Kidding. The first stat I look at are walks/9 innings. He has a history of giving up way too may walks.
DarkSide830
worth it if only for his Twitter posts. that said, he’s not a bad option given the lack of present options.
Dotnet22
His playing status won’t be an Unsolved Mystery…..yeah I know it’s Robert Stack. Close enough.

I’m surprised the Padres didn’t stick with Stock. Hopefully, the Phillies won’t be stuck with another stack of ineffective relievers in 2020. Thanks!
AJ the Rastaman
we didn’t stock cuz he blows. anymore questions? lol.
bravesfan
Nice pick up for the Phillies, as a Braves fan though, hope he repeats #’s like he did this year and not a year ago
hoosierhysteria
He can throw. The question is can he pitch? Throw strikes dude! Trust your stuff!
