Braves third base coach Ron Washington and Rangers Major League development coordinator Jayce Tingler are indeed the final two candidates to fill the Padres managerial vacancy, per MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell.
Washington and Tingler have been the rumored final candidates for a couple of days now, but Cassavell has added a note of finality to the search that could reach a conclusion shortly. The common bond here between Tingler and Washington is their relationship to Padres GM AJ Preller. Both connect to Preller’s time as an assistant general manager with the Texas Rangers.
There remains an outside possibility that a third candidate could enter the fray, but the odds are in favor of either Washington or Tingler becoming the next manager of the Padres. The Padres appear hopeful that one might even serve on the coaching staff for the other, and though a “team of rivals” managerial team makes sense on paper, at least one team official thinks this possibility is unlikely.
The crux of the difference between these two candidates appears to be a question of experience versus ideology. Tingler is a well-regarded, forward-thinking contemporary of Preller’s, whose front office background and comfort with analytics make him a good fit from a synergy standpoint. His coaching experience, however, is limited.
Washington has a suspect history with analytics, but he is a two-time pennant-winning manager and one of the most highly-regarded infield coaches in the league. If Preller and the Padres value a weathered hand to steer the ship, as has been rumored, then Washington fits the bill.
Henry Silvestre
or hire them both Wahington as the Manager..Tingler as the Bench Coach “manager in training” as Washington gets what 3 yrs.. Both get promotions from current roles and they feed off each other perfectly
bbatardo
I like that idea but hard to say if either would go for it. Especially since Preller might be gone if 2020 is a failure.
wordonthestreet
So you think Washington would be ok with Preller basically saying we are hiring you for 3 years Max to train your replacement, Tingler, who will replace you in 3 years or maybe less if Washington does a good job training his replacement but the team does not win? Insane.
Allknowingone
What is so insane? I would say anyone offered a 3 year contract that will likely pay them at minimum 2 million dollars along with other promotional opportunities to make even more will jump at the chance? Are you saying Washington would turn it down because he is not being named manager for life?
Are you a Connie Mack fan? Please tell me when any manager, or any coach in any sport is hired for life? People are given 3 year contracts that say they will hold the job for 3 years. Why on earth would anyone turn down all that money for the reasons you state? Who would say “no, I don’t want the job because you only want me, a man in my sixties, to have a 3 year contract.
pt57
The goal is to win. If Washington is hired and wins, they won’t replace him.
camilo09
As a die hard Padre fan I think its a nistake to hire either! It’s sad we cant get better candidates because Washington cant win in the post season and Tringle and too fresh and will have Andy Green syndrome. We wont win with either I’m afraid and Prellar will get canned next year! Think about it, anyone else rumored to want either one of those guys? There’s a reason, smh!
damascusj
Didn’t Washington take Texas to two world series??
And at this point”get us to playoffs but not have a great playoff winrate” is far better than any of our previous “20 games below 500” seasons
sjwil1
Washington very good between the white lines
amazing larry
I see what you did there.
todd76
Don’t forget when Washington came out with his “mistake” and “not being true to his wife”. Hmmm
Wilford Brimley
I guffawed and think I pulled an oblique. I’ll send you the bill.
619bird
Some baggage with Washington but the guy can win if he’s got the talent to work with.
Allknowingone
Actually- Wash has not done anything half the coaches and managers past and present have not done. We just heard about Wash because he made a mistake on how to handle it.
Wash is an absolute brilliant baseball mind. He won as a manager and a coach. Had Wash not gotten in trouble he would be a Hall of Fame manager and viewed in the same class as Maddon. Look at his time with the Rangers and Maddon’s with the Rays. Wash won one more pennant. The issue is if his hiring will lead to questions that become a distraction. If they don’t- at a minimum Wash leads them to a second wild card.
wordonthestreet
More than some baggage with Washington
madmanTX
Gonna be a run on blow in San Diego: I think they hire Ron.
VegasSDfan
You going to vacation in San Diego soon?
wordonthestreet
Madman Keyser nailed you! Hope that teaches you a lesson
OG Spike
Wash is suppose to take over for Snit
braves2
he is ? who said that? and when is this happening? snit is doing fine
OG Spike
The common Braves fan knows. Snit is doing just fine? Don’t get us winning off talent confused with Snit being a good manager. Bad bullpen manager, refuses to play small ball even if it’s a tie game in the 9th, and butts heads with the franchise player
wordonthestreet
OG then I guess you know something no one else does. When is Snit being fired? Please tell us now
OG Spike
After next year when he coaches us right out of the first round again. The players respect Wash more.
OG Spike

hoosierhysteria
Disgusting. No real manager wants to work for Another Jackass. Look what he did to Buddy Black…then threw Green out….we need hitters that don’t strike out.
Padsfan
Absolutely! !! Need hitters not ehiffers
wordonthestreet
Exactly but Washington is desperate. No one else will hire him as manager.
Allknowingone
Wash is not desperate but he does want to manage again. For the past 10 years he has talked about how he wants to return to Oakland and manage the A’s. He sees the Padres job as his path to that.
I will tell you right now- a press conference will be held Monday at 4 pm Pacific time. The Padres will announce they have signed Wash to a two year contract with an option for a 3rd year or a buyout. Total value of two years in 1.8 million. He will make $800 K the first year and a million the second year. The third year option will be worth 1.2 million if exercised and has a buyout of 200k. The total value of the deal could be 3 million over 3 years and guaranteed to be 2 million if he only lasts the two or is fired before then. He will also be paid for taking part in events and doing a weekly show on the teams radio network. He gets a car and a full medical package. The club will not be responsible for his housing outside of the normal moving expenses.
No decisions, I repeat no decisions will be made related to his coaches until the interviews for other jobs are conducted. This will have a great impact on who coaches where because if Gabe Kapler does not get hired he is number one on their wishlist to be 3rd base coach.
This is a done deal.
Wilford Brimley
Exactly. Get somebody to get stern with Austin Hedges until he stops sucking so bad at the plate. Maybe he could bat left-handed instead? He wouldn’t be much worse.
SDHotDawg
If Preller goes with Tingler, there are a lot of players that won’t be happy. That’s a recipe for failure right from the beginning.
Show Me Your Tatis
Why would players be unhappy with Tingler?
SDHotDawg
Because after Green was fired, Acee quoted several of the veterans as saying they want somebody that walks in the door and has immediate respect because of his accomplishments and reputation.
Marcus was already taken
Doesn’t mean tingler can’t away them
SDHotDawg
Respect is EARNED. Over time.
Show Me Your Tatis
Yes and who says Tingler can’t earn their respect over time?
Koamalu
That would not be Washington then. Hard to respect a man that has fallen into addiction more than once in his life. That has cheated on his wife more than once. That only admitted his issues when he was caught.
Koamalu
The Padres are in it to win it in 2020, not down the road. Do they have time for Tingler to win them over? Would he be able to prove he is the type of winner that can lead them to the World Series while they are still in spring training?
SDHotDawg
Washington has “baseball” respect. Tingler is is Green v2.0; another Preller sock puppet.
SDHotDawg
How much more time are you willing to give Preller and his bad decisions? “Over time” means a tiny bit more than 2-3 weeks.
Koamalu
Washington doesn’t have personal respect. You play hard for a man you trust.
How can you trust Washington? He kept on using cocaine until he got busted, again. He cheated on his wife several times and only admitted it after being caught.
SDHotDawg
You don’t know that. They would probably have more respect for him than some cheating ‘roid user.
stpbaseball
none of that matters to the players. they only care that they believe he can lead them to winning. or not
Psychguy
Really…imdb.com/title/tt0053363/
padreforlife
Cheap retread manager with baggage or cheap no experienced manager wonderful
Allknowingone
Not really. Compare Wash’s time with the Rangers to Maddon’s with the Rays. Had Wash not gotten in trouble he would have been hired up by a contender very quickly.
wordonthestreet
But Washington did get in trouble. Big trouble. So to pretend it never happened is not logical.
SDHotDawg
So did Preller. Three times. Maybe he feels some sort of “outlaw” connection to Washington?
Koamalu
Preller got suspended twice.
SDHotDawg
He also got the Padres fined for illegal workouts before his second suspension. That’s THREE disciplinary actions by MLB.
Koamalu
You mean had he not relapsed with cocaine and test positive then get caught having another extramarital affair. Not many teams that will hire a guy with that baggage.
losbravos 2
Let the braves keep wash
braves2
i really hope wash stays in atl. i just wish sometimes he would be a little more selective with the runners he is sending home from 3rd
Strike Four
Remember when Washington left Oakland a second time to go to Atlanta so he could “be closer to family”? Uhhh….
wordonthestreet
Washington has baggage and is full of crap. Not someone you want leading your team. Lack of solid character should be a non starter but hey its AJ Preller who lacks integrity so it makes sense
keyser_soze
Maybe his kids graduated, or situation changed. You know, I’m that thing called LIFE, things change. Maybe not in you guys bubble, but for most, things change
Strike Four
ORRRR you do cocaine from time to time and also hate working for Oakland???
wordonthestreet
Then again maybe things did not change. Maybe not in your bubble but sometimes people do not change.
Please explain about the kids graduation and how that changes things. How many kids. When did they graduate. Why did that make him do those things?
Excuses excuses
Wilford Brimley
He was really snappy with Billy Beane-Pitt in that Moneyball movie too. What an attitude.
SDHotDawg
It was a movie. It had nothing in common with the book.
VegasSDfan
Tingler! I like to guess what may be..
Washington as bench coach
wordonthestreet
Why do Padre fans think this is some dream team?
Take Tingler. Why do you need Washington.
Why would Washington want to be bench coach for a man who beat him out of the job that Washington would feel is is better suited for?
Sounds like recipe for disaster. Do you really think it would be hard to find am experienced coach to be your bench coach
Wilford Brimley
Agreed. I could see Washington planting some of the white stuff in Tingler’s office and getting him fired over it.
keyser_soze
You must be hearing a lot of “words on the street” because you’re THAT guy that has an answer for everyone’s comment with your “inside” knowledge of everything WASH. You’re the expert, it looks like
wordonthestreet
Well that is the Word on the Street!
kingcong95
It’s not hard to make the playoffs. Tell him, Wash.

I love Wash and would hate to see him leave The Braves. Best infield teacher in baseball.
driftcat28 2
Could hire both, one as manager and one as bench coach
towinagain
My take, just speculation. Padres did a full court press in pursuit of Bochy. Came up short and are going to hire Tingles because of his connection with Preller. Tingler may just be ‘holding down the fort fort’ for Bochy.
mrpadre19
Wash also has a connection with Preller.
Show Me Your Tatis
Bochy.
Is.
RETIRING!
Koamalu
Not according to Bochy. He was noncommittal on whether he was going to retire or take another job. He retired from the Giants job because he was not a fit there with Faidi and the rebuild that is coming.
Show Me Your Tatis
Yes according to Bochy
mlbtraderumors.com/2019/10/bruce-bochy-not-interes…
Melchez
I think Ausmus is perfect for San Diego. They have a bunch of young talent that won’t intimidate him. Maybe he actually learns how to manage a game?
HubcapDiamondStarHalo
So, from your comment you feel Ausmus doesn’t know how to manage a game. Why, then, do you want him managing?
Melchez
He would be managing the Padres… not a real major league team. It would be good practice.
wordonthestreet
So you are more concerned with getting Ausmus more experience? Than picking a manager to actual manage well?
Melchez
It’s the Padres… do they really care about winning? They got rid of Bud Black and hired Green.
Allknowingone
I agree. Ausmus is one of the worst managers in recent memory. Your sarcasm was lost on some.
dmarcus15
I like Washington how he hasn’t got a job before,no clue
Allknowingone
He won two pennants with Texas so he had a job before. He was very successful but not hired by another team because of an issue with drugs and a personal domestic situation that was ugly for those watching.
wordonthestreet
Dmarcus sorry to say but based on your comment the one with no clue … is …
crazylarry
Oh this will be great. Hire someone who thinks like Preller. This ship has sunk. How does the man keep his job? Amazing
padreforlife
He’s cheap and Padre fans love them prospects
SDHotDawg
And many love Preller more. They’ve forgotten what winning looks like. I am ashamed.

If the Padres wanted to impress me, Clint Hurdle comes to mind.

When Green was let go, we were told that everybody would be jumping at the chance to be the new manager. The city and the young talent would have everyone drooling at the chance to manage the Padres. After all the hype for the job and we are down to these two? Wow
SDHotDawg
Because no experienced manager wants to be told to bat Hosmer in the cleanup spot.
padreforlife
Preller is lame duck GM who is paying manager peanuts = Washington who no other team is interested and unknown Dingleberry

Wash over Tingle…
nowheretogobutup
Bring them both in Wash as Mgr. two yr deal and Tingler as bench coach, if Wash is fired in the first two yrs. bring Tingler in as the interim Mgr. and see how he does.. Personally I see AJ gone at the end of 2020 this team is in total disaray No SP per say, way to many K’s, lack of OBP, no late season hustle, OF is weak and C dept. needs to get someone on a consistent basis to hit above .270.
Henry Silvestre
must not have watched C Francisco Mejia after assuming #1 C (2nd half) .305/.355/.571 .866 OPS or best hitting C in baseball in the 2nd half… if not for his injury that sidelined him for 4-5 weeks.. we wouldn’t be talking Hedges other than in possible trade or as a defensive specialist and backup to the gifted Mejia.. unless Preller goes Grandal and uses Mejia to get a TOR… look for Mejia to be the #1 C in SDP with Hegdes playing about 40% of the time.. Wouldn’t be surprised if Mejia is 3 WAR plus in 2020…. and there is even a better all around C just around the corner from the mlb in A+/AA C Luis Campusano
san diego4life
Great post I like when people who actually know what the padres have post there comments unlike others who no nothing
nowheretogobutup
This team is horrible and if they were paid on performance none of them would make close to their salary except for yates and tatis (IL) again.
nowheretogobutup
Hello Henry the last time I looked Mejia finished with a .265BA what’s so great about that his framing and defense were ok but nothing special, and of course he’s on the IL for five weeks even worse his OBP is in the low .310. would AJ go after Grandal we got rid of the guy for more than one reason and his new deal will probably be for four or five years, please give it up. He had a decent year but sure looked bad when he couldn’t catch those passed balls in the playoff, or maybe you didn’t see that… However your the expert so we’ll see come 2020. As it stands now this team without any major moves will still finish below .500. A minor league C is a suspect and at best a prospect until they can stick in the Bigs for at least four to five yrs. the percentage shows less that 18% do..
wordonthestreet
Haha why would Washington take the insulting 2 year deal making him a lame duck after one year and hire his obvious replacement as bench coach.
The players would wonder who is really in charge. The placeholder “manager” or manager “in waiting”
Terrible idea
nowheretogobutup
Wash will take any deal to get back at the age of 67. He’s desperate for a gig as Mgr again and the third yr should be an option if he gets the team to .500 or better in the second yr. his option kicks in for the third year, its called incentive motivated.
padreforlife
New GM won’t want Dingleberry
keepinthafaithsd1
We had better go big in f.a. if we get one of these 2…
SportsFan0000
Padres should interview Astros bench coach Joe Espada for their managerial opening.
Espada is highly respected for his communications skills, teaching young players, his analytics etc.
Espada also formerly worked as Yankees 3B and infield coach
and the Marlins infield coach.
Espada is a hot ticket in the managerial market with the Cubs, Giants, Pirates and others expressing interest…
oldleftylong
There’s always the “hot ticket” but he’ll likely come and go as the rest.
wordonthestreet
Cubs already interviewed him and have 2nd interview with him in Chicago today. Padres are late to the party as usual
san diego4life
Maybe because the padres haven’t contacted him . If they do he might think about the padres job
wordonthestreet
I doubt it if the Cubs want him he will have an offer in hand before the series ends or je may have it now. Espada is not turning down the job of managing the Chicago Cubs to be able to interview for the Padres.
That only happens if the Cubs pass.
SportsFan0000
Espada will get multiple offers and choose the best fit.
It does not have to be the Cubs.
Cubs rotation needs major overhaul.
Cubs 3B is walking as a FA.
SS and other positions are not sure things anymore with decreased production.
Cubs cannot interview and/or offer during the WS.
It is against MLB Rules since Espada is working with the WS
Astros right now.
Henry Silvestre
the Mets are interviewing Skip Shoemaker (Pads coach) and you guys are worried at AJP .. I had Washington #1 .. (gotten to 2 WS hungry for a ship).. Maddon #2… Loretta 3 and KOTSAY 4… I had no idea who Tingler was… so my #1 choice still in play and I would be very happy with Washington as my Manager…
wordonthestreet
You may very well get your wish
Tomfromsd
I am disappointed on several levels. First, if the Padres were serious about wanting to hire a manager with proven bench experience, I don’t understand why Tingler is even in the conversation. I am not saying he is incompetent, but this screams of Preller being willing to ignore the initial basic rules of the managerial search in order to hire someone he trusts. At the beginning of the search and on the back of Andy Green’s failures, it was decided that this clubhouse needed hands-on managerial experience. Tingler just doesn’t fit the bill.
Washington undoubtedly does, but I have never rated him as a manager. He seems stuck in the 80’s, unwilling to accept change and embrace the fact that the game has changed. At least he fits the bill, but he’s just a poor choice IMHO.
All of this is being made worse by the fact that in my opinion, the perfect candidate in Joe Maddon is currently available. The fact that he wasn’t even invited for an interview blows my mind.
san diego4life
If Joe Maddon was so high in demand why didn’t the Phillies or Mets go after him hard ?
padreforlife
They had time? Angels fired there guy and swooped in fast
SportsFan0000
Not convinced that Preller is the guy to take the Padres to the WS and win it.
Loaded farm and then he trades at least 2 very good young major league p[layers and prospects for a future question mark prospect?!
Now, Preller wants to hire a manager from guys he formerly worked with in the Rangers organization?!
Washington would be an OK choice, but he has never won the trophy as an experienced manager with a loaded Rangers roster.
The other guy is a lottery ticket with no major league managing experience like the guy he just fired.?
How about interviewing Girardi?! Schowalter?! Manuel?! Joe Espada?!
If Preller blows this hire then he could be the next one out the door…
padreforlife
Wow just figuring out now Preller isn’t guy? “They say Detroit audiences are greatest I said s I have known that for years” Bob Seger…sorry carry on
SportsFan0000
Not just figuring it out.

Show Me Your Tatis
Padres should hire Lou Piniella as their next manager.
Tomfromsd
Up to now, I was willing to give Preller a pass.
I don’t blame him for trying to compete when he first got here (and with the exception of Trea Turner, it’s not like we really gave up lots for the “stars” we acquired).
I also don’t blame him for the pricey extension to Myers and the the Machado and Hosmer contracts. Taken in isolation, they don’t look great, and we overpaid. But bad teams sometimes have to overpay to get some talent on board, and build on that. That’s what we did.
However, now is the time to contend. With the exception of 2B, I believe we have an infield of competent players. We’ve got some interesting rotation pieces and Balsley will piece together a bullpen. We need a reliable starter and some MLB-level outfielders. Do your job Preller, or lose it.
padreforlife
Max Fried would like a word with “exception”
padreforlife
Bad teams overpay yea and continue to be bad
