as bad as the Cabrera contract is, at least he could still be an acceptable 9 hole hitting DH over the next two and they can release him thereafter. while it’s not optimal, he was in the top 30 in the league in average, and hit over .100 better than Chris Davis. again, these are not optimal numbers, but the Tigers could be dealing with a heck of a lot worse.

Totally agree. There are bad contracts, and then there are horribly bad contracts.

Isn’t Miggy owed significantly more $ than Davis though? I agree Miggy is leaps and bounds better than Davis but even if you assume Davis is worth absolutely zero Miggy would still have to be able to earn at least the difference between their contracts on the free agent market right now. I was thinking that Miggy is owed something like $30-$50 million more than Davis. I have a hard time seeing Miggy get more then around $10 million or so on the FA market right now so that make Miggy’s remaining contract worse. It would kind of be like having Davis on his current contract and releasing him to eat all the remaining money and then afterwords going to the free agent market and overpaying by 10’s of millions of dollars for a player exactly like Miggy. It’s better to have neither of them and keep the difference between to 2 contracts to spend on a much more productive player. I can’t remember how much each player is owed though so if it actually is less then what Miggy would make on the market right now then Miggy’s contract is better. Does anyone know what they are each owed?

Is just looked it up: If you count the deferred money (which teams usually don’t in terms if trades because it is considered money already earned and is spread out in low long term payments) Chris Davis is still owed $93 mill. If you don’t count the deferred money Davis is owed $51 mill. Miggy has no deferred money and is owed $124 mill. Even if you count the deferred $ I highly doubt Miggy would fetch a $31 million contract so Davis’ contract is better. I would rather release Chris Davis and have $31 mill to spend then have Miggy at this point. If the Tigers were to trade Miggy to Baltimore for Davis and then release Davis they would only be responsible for the non deferred payments of $51 million. Would save Detroit $73 million. That would be a steal for Detroit. I think every team in the league would rather have $73 million instead of Miggy Cabrera. Even if you include the deferred $ the contracts don’t even cone close to evening out until Miggys last contract year and at that point Davis contract will have already been finished. Davis contract is better by somewhere between $31-$73 million minus no more then whatever value Miggy has from here on out. Davis really isn’t even part of the equation. The real question is would you rather have Miguel Cabrera or some where between $31 million and $73 million. I would take the cash every time. I’m sure most every team in baseball would too.i

I hate the 1 game WC. It goes against everything baseball has been based on for over a hundred years. It’s inconsistent that teams play both regular season and post-season series except for the WC. Given the nature of baseball the series is necessary for determining the better team. It was obviously instituted as an artificial attempt to mimic excitement of the 163rd game tie-breaker. What they’ve done though is cheapen any future tie-breakers, and open the door for better teams to be eliminated easier by an inferior one.

The WC is one game because neither team won their division. A hundred years ago the WC didn’t exist and if the 1st place team was up by 15 games in July the season was over, full of meaningless games. Now you get a one game lottery ticket. Keeps fans of 2nd and 3rd place teams interested for most of a long baseball season. A lot worse things to not like in baseball like the softball designated hitter rule.

They could just expand the WC to 3 games. That would mean another 2-4 playoff games every year to make more $.
