Basically just an off-the-cuff guess. I think the Padres should hire someone with experience in the role, and Washington has connections to Preller from Texas.
You don’t need to have previous managerial experience to be successful in that role (Alex Cora) and the Preller-Rangers connection is beyond played out at this point.
Wash would be my guess too. I have read several articles that imply he is the favorite. There was a post on this site back in ’14 when he resigned and Texas fans were very surprised. The Texas Rangers never really won squat until he started managing them but he still took them to back to back WS appearances. I want him to stay the Braves 3rd base coach but not at his expense. He deserves another shot. Back to back AL Championships is “incredibly hard.” I hope he gets another chance aw managing. I just hope Preller will give him a legit opportunity to win it all. AJ has done anything to prove he is capable of giving any manager that opportunity IMO, which is sad because ownership is clearly willing to pay for the necessary players. AJ just needs to figure out the difference between the wrong ones and the right ones. Maybe one day… Right?
heck if Starlin is taking 1 year $5 million he can have Cesar’s spot and Kingery can go be the stopgap 3B/CF.

I agree it’s not fully necessary. Just saying I think it’d make sense at this point after the failed Green experiment.
I can name a dozen “inexperienced” managers who I’d rather have over a dozen “experienced” managers, with Wash being one of the second dozen.
