The Mets have launched their first round of managerial interviews. Carlos Beltran appears to have been the first candidate to sit down with the front office, with Andy Martino of SNY.tv reporting (Twitter links) that the sides met yesterday.
It’s a mite surprising to see Beltran jump to the front of the interview list, though it stands to reason that the Mets had to fit him in wherever they could with Beltran actively engaged with the Yankees’ postseason efforts. The future Hall-of-Famer doesn’t have any prior coaching or managerial experience but certainly knows his way around a big-league dugout. Jon Heyman of MLB Network tweeted earlier today that Beltran is seen as a “very serious” candidate for the job.
Other candidates will obviously follow Beltran into the offices in Queens. Derek Shelton, Joe Girardi, and Mike Bell are already known to be lined up for interviews. All three are said to be scheduled for next week.
It’s too soon to declare this a four-man race. Mets quality control coach Luis Rojas will get an interview, per MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo (via Twitter). The son of long-time former skipper Felipe Alou, Rojas joined the New York organization’s MLB staff last season under just-canned manager Mickey Callaway.
There could be yet more candidates to come. GM Brodie Van Wagenen is also chatting with other persons of interest via phone, Martino adds. The soon-to-be-sophomore exec is working through a “big list” of names. Martino tweets that John Gibbons, Dusty Baker, and Buck Showalter have all been “discussed internally” but “not contacted” to this point.

Beltran? Have fun watching the Mets ruin the last years of what could have been one of the best home grown rotations since the 90s Braves.

Ejemp, I was thinking the same thing, lol, you are so right!! What the heck is wrong with their judgement?
So many great experienced guys looking for a team, AND they are thrilled with Beltran. Oh well, I wish them luck!
metsie1
Funny, the Mets haven’t hired anyone yet. Yet posters are making fools of themselves jumping to conclusions.

Should be Girardi will be Beltran

Rojas is a nephew, just like he was the other day when Todd put son in and was corrected in the comments.

The Mets absolutely need to nail this hire. As a fan of the team here are my top 5 choices..
1) Maddon….will probably be too pricey..but he is the best available
2) Girardi…. can handle New York..needs to improve in game decisions
3) Hinch….would need to trade for him..but worth it I think
4) Wright…no chance…but would be a pr dream and fans would love it
5) Collins….i don’t know…i just liked him
Moves is make if im Van Wagannen…
1) Fix bullpen….Diaz is very young and can bounce back…Familia..not so sure…
Maybe trade for Giles or take a chance on Betances..
2) Find Center Fielder….options..
In house…Nimmo or Conforto
Trade targets..Marte and Betts
Nimmo,D.Smith,Gimenez and C+ prospect for Marte
Syndergaard,Nimmo,Gsellman,Mauricio and top 5 prospect for Betts and E.Rodriguez
Qualify Wheeler..if he accepts great..if not..offer 4yr/$80mil
This team is capable of an October run. The rotation…even with the loss of Wheeler..is still Elite..
Bullpen is priority..
I feel bench is solid
JD Davis needs to play
Conforto breaks out… .285 35 107
Rosario continues to improve
McNeil as well…
Give Cano another shot..
Hopefully we see .270 20 80
Diaz bounces back…
It’s alot..but the talent is there

Your not getting Hinch , how old are you ,,, 12?
Steven Chinwood
Sad thing is 12yo’s don’t watch baseball.
dematteo1982
Sorry wrong reply
nymetsking
Apparently at least one does
dematteo1982
I’m 12 because Hinch is a top choice of mine?? And i have no clue what would have to be done trade wise to acquire him. Hinch is a choice I hope the Mets would pursue…
I guess that makes me a pre teen
wordonthestreet
What are you trading for Hinch? Why would the Astros get rid of him? That makes zero sense.
dematteo1982
Trading for Hinch, who I feel is one of the best managers in the game, makes no sense? It’s a huge upgrade over Callaway….it makes perfect sense for the Mets. Maybe not for Houston..but maybe they win another world series and they are head over heels for Maddon. Who knows? It was just a top choice of mine and that’s it….relax
its_happening
Hinch for Syndergaard, Astros hire Girardi. It’s settled. Your Mets get your man.
nymetsking
It’s my top choice that the Mets trade for Trout.
josebatista89
Boy I couldn’t stop laughing. Syndergaard and Nimmo for one of the best players in the game in Betts and E.Rod. This isnt MLB the show. Try more than that. No way the Stros give up Hinch unless they win the world series and they feel highly confident about Joe Espada. I agree Girardi should be given the job. He is what this club needs. But after that endorsement by Cashman they wont do it. Beltran will get the Job. Hope he dosent. I’d prefer Girardi or Showalter but I think Showalter is going to Philly.
dematteo1982
I don’t really see whats so funny. The Red Sox issues are mainly on the mound. Betts is without a doubt a top 5 player in the game. 1 more year of control. Maybe Dombrowski wont want to pony up the $$. Stuff wise..Thor is a top 5 starter…easily could win 20 with an era in the high 2’s low 3’s..200+ innings…225+k’s a whip barely over 1.00…Nimmo…while coming of an injury riddled season…is certainly a worthy MLB CF. He has the potential to hit .275+ 20+ hr (prob more in Fenway) 70+ rbi’s (depending on position in the order) 15-20 sb…an obp of .380+ and solid defense…Gsellman is a decent bullpen arm..Mauricio is a top 100 prospext
nymetsking
LOL. Thor is nowhere near a top 5 starter, unless you’re talking about his flow. But pitching? No. Not even top 25.
dematteo1982
I’m not saying that gets it done..
But in my opinion…Nimmo is a good replacement for Betts..Thor is a fairly good upgrade over Rodriguez..a decent bullpen arm..a top 100 prospect and another top 5 organizational prospect.
Reply with a trade that you would accept from the Mets for Betts…forget Rodriguez

TONY DE FRANCESCO ! PLease ! former catcher knows how to call a game and when a pitcher is gassed. Local boy, born in the Bronx. Mior league manager for years, developing Jpsh Donaldson, George Springer, Carlos Correa, Yuli Gurriel, Jeff McNeil, Pete Alonso, and on and on. Managed 14 seasons at the AAA level, with a .544 AAA winning percentage. which is the 162 game equivalent of winning an average of 90 games each year for 14 years. Managed Las Vegas in 2018 and Syracuse in 2019 for the Mets, after managing previously for the A’s and Astros. He IS EXPERIENCED and, for the Wilpons, comes Nicely Priced. He’s only 54,which is Joe Girardi’s age.. BVW has the answer right under his nose. Pick up that phone!
EasternLeagueVeteran
Someone said that this will make or break BVW’s reputation. Tony DeFrancesco is Buck Showalter prior to Buck making a name for himself. He had the minor league experience managing. Certainly wasn’t a former big leaguer. Sure David Wright would be great and so would Carlos Beltran, but wouldn’t they make the same mistakes Mickey Callaway made, who never managed a game in the bigs leagues nor the minors? Bottom line is the Mets fans are bot comjng
EasternLeagueVeteran
To see the Manager hand the lineup card in. They come to the park to see the players play, and the manager put the best lineup out there each game and adjust each inning as necessary. Those in-game decisions cost Mickey his job. Find someone who has already gone through times of making those decisions. Joe Girardi. Yes. Tony DeFrancesco, Yes too
AvidAstrosFan
Agreed, he would be a very good candidate and probably a very good skipper. I know the players respected him in the Astros .org.

In person as opposed too? Dating Service?

It’s odd he showed up to the interview in an Astros uniform.

WS Astros got him that ring

Sid Bream
Bobby Bonilla needs to be the manager and then the Mets can pay him a $50 a week.. If Bonilla declines, then see if Strawberry or Sid Fernandez are available.

Vince Coleman for his bench coach
josebatista89
This is how you improve this club. Make a deal with the Rockies for Charlie Blackmon. There arent many bullpen options this year. Go after Rendon but McNeil in left. Hope that J.T reamulto dosent re up with the Phillies. Resign Wheeler and trade Syndergaard for some peices.
nymetsking
Blackmon is 33 and ready to decline, not to mention he’d be losing whatever boost he may be getting from Coors. Trading prospects for a guy on the downside but making 20M+ didn’t work so well this past offseason. Marte is a few years younger and has a more attractive contract (only 2.5M more than Lagares, who will be gone). Agree there’s not many bullpen options, but that doesn’t mean you can’t go after those few worthwhile ones.
Rendon would be great, but I don’t see them shelling out $200M to get his attention, plus the corner OF will be crowded as is (McNeil, Conforto, Nimmo, Cespedes, Davis and Dom), so hard to see them adding a 3B to relegate McNeil to being a full time OF.
Realmuto will still be a Phillie next year if he doesn’t sign an extension. He’s a FA after NEXT season, so he’s not an option.
josebatista89
NOT interested in minor league coaches.
EasternLeagueVeteran
Not a coach. A manager, and one who knows how to win and get the most from his young players. I think you don’t just get the point. What’s your reasoning. My guess is it has no logical background.

What about Jeff Wilpon?
He’s a good person
