5:54 pm: At a pregame media session, Scherzer told reporters (including Mark Zuckerman of MASN) that he is also dealing with nerve irritation in his neck. The ace added that he underwent a cortisone shot that will take approximately 48 hours to kick in, seemingly putting to rest any hope he could return in Tuesday’s Game 6. He remains on the Nationals’ World Series roster, but those in attendance at this evening’s media session (including Todd Dybas of NBC Sports) seemed less than optimistic about his chances of returning by Wednesday’s potential Game 7.
3:36 pm: Nationals starter Max Scherzer, who was slated to start Sunday’s World Series game five, has been scratched from his start, according to Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle. In his place, Joe Ross will take the mound for the Nationals. Per Jesse Dougherty of the Washington Post, Scherzer has been dealing with spasms in his neck and right trapezius.
Manager Dave Martinez told reporters that Scherzer began experiencing spasms last night, and woke up this morning in worse condition, rendering him unable to go tonight. Martinez also said that the Nationals will keep Scherzer on the roster in hopes that he shows enough improvement in the next couple of days to pitch in either game six or seven (if necessary). As of now, the Nats plan to start Stephen Strasburg in game six on Tuesday, with the possibility that Scherzer could be available in relief, or as the starter for a potential seventh game.
Martinez noted that Scherzer’s injury influenced his bullpen management in last night’s loss: he refrained from using Joe Ross, bracing for the possibility that Scherzer may not be able to start Sunday’s game. It’s also notable that neither Sean Doolittle nor Daniel Hudson, the Nats’ two most reliable relievers, has pitched since game one last Tuesday, meaning that Martinez might be able to stretch them out if he can’t get sufficient length from Ross.
Scherzer’s injury is a crucial development in a virtual must-win fifth game. With Gerrit Cole on the hill for the Astros, it was already going to be a tough game, but without their ace on the mound, the Nationals will have to count on Joe Ross, who found his stride in August and September. The freshness of the bullpen will help the Nats’ cause, with the possibility that both Doolittle and Hudson could be asked to get six outs each.

Your not a team of destiny unless you get all the breaks, they need one more tonight with Ross who when he’s on,he’s pretty good!

yanks02026
Their hopes died when they couldn’t win one of game 3 or 4.. Even before Max was declared out, I doubt they would have been able to beat Verlander and Cole again.
Yankeepride88
Verlander has been pretty meh all postseason. Plus, look at all of the innings piling up on their arms. They are both well past career high innings pitched this year.
dugdog83
That’s what champs do.
Priggs89
Verlandet isn’t well past his career high innings pitched. He pitched more in both 2011 and 2012…
Ketch
Ok but that was 7 years ago before the 36yo Verlander even reaches age 30..,
todd76
Too bad to see a stud pitcher like Scherzer have to miss a start in the World Series. Not a Nationals fan but this guy is a special pitcher.

6 – 5. Nationals tonight. Hide and watch.

national done looked very bad for second day in a row. No wonder no one is watching this world series.

not trying to argue with you but I wouldn’t assume anything at this point
MoRivera 1999
With the Nats down 4-0 in game 5 and the Nats hitting for nothing for their third straight game, including 2 games not featuring Verlander or Cole, I think we can assume all we like that the Nats are going down hard.

Well that’s game. Cole against Ross? No way.

Yanks- yeah I have that feeling now too. Build em up the first two games, then sweep em out the next 4.

Come on! Unsung heroes have emerged in the World Series for over a hundred years! Watch the Nats rally around their underdog pitcher!

I’m thinking more along the lines of a bunch of Astros rallies.

Good point. Brian Doyle was a stud in 1978 subbing for willie Randolph. Was out of Mlb by 1981 at 27

Loved attending his baseball school. In his 40’s Brian Doyle’s hands were still terrific during INF drills. Denny’s too.
bigcheesegrilledontoast
Is this a tactical move, if it is he starts game 6.

They have Strasburg for game 6
Baseball 1600
How about you read the article, because if you did you’d read that it’s clearly not a tactical move.

wow, you thought “fake news” was so clever and original you had to post it twice?
batty
It would be the worst tactical move in Nats history. But no, it’s clearly not.
amk3510
Strasburg is better than Scherzer. Theres no tatic behind it
Melchez
Road team wins every game? Nats in 7?
macstruts
I don’t think it matters unless he’s not ready to pitch game 7. He wasn’t going to pitch twice more anyway. It doesn’t mater which two games you win.
T_Rexx2
They may have used him in relief game 7
macstruts
I think that is a good point, there is no question it makes a difference, but I don’t think it’s a large difference. The Nats are still playing a home game today and I think it’s a huge advantage to have Scherzer start game 7. Providing they make it that far.
Washington has to score runs and the last two games they haven’t. It’s hard to beat Cole no matter who your are starting.
If Scherzer pitched today, Game six would still be the game the Nationals needed to win. I think game six is still the game regardless who wins today.
.
MoRivera 1999
“Providing they make it that far” is the operative phrase. It’s quite possible, maybe even probable, they won’t.

I know there’s all this fuss about “being first” and getting stories up as soon as they break or whatever, but come on, these writers need to edit their posts for typos. “With morning in worse condition.” Especially now that it’s been an hour.
Some MLBTR writers are a little over-concerned with being fast or trying to flex their writing muscles with fancy diction than actually editing. Typos make any attempts at word-crafting moot.
dynamite drop in monty
Very interesting.
Matt_Angel_Bronco_Laker
You’re not paying these writers. You understand what they’re trying to say. These are not papers that they’re turning in to their college professor to be graded. Quit being so damn perfect and enjoy the content and knowledge they provide you.
richt
Oh boy, here comes the white knight.
Don’t fool yourself: the writing quality here has long been subpar. For a site with such high prominence in the baseball world, it needs to be better.

The writing on this site > richt’s contributions. I vote you off the island
dynamite drop in monty
Start your own, then. Can’t wait to see how impeccable the parlance is.

@richt Write a strongly-worded letter of complaint to MLBTR and demand a full refund of what you’ve paid to view this site. That’ll show them.

What do you call this fantasy world you live in?

Sorry but your white knight armor isn’t as shiny as halofanatic’s. Thanks for playing.

I’ll hire you to correct the typos in the comments while I correct typos in the actual articles. Since you’re so good at correcting commenter typos.

Proper English > your opinion
philsphan1979
A stiffed neck Max, still pitches better than a full rested Ross on any giving Sunday (had to throw that in there lol)..I can see Martinez doing this as a tactical move. Like maybe putting propaganda in the news, starting Ross for -3-5 innings (if he makes it that far) than putting in Scherzer. It’s the damn World Series for crying out loud. The man pitched against the Phillies after getting hit in the eye with a line drive, and shut us down. Your telling me he’s going to sit out because of a stiff neck? I smell BS

why dont you stfu and go to another site, freeloader? no one is impressed and your opinion is worthless.
richt
I’m not here trying to impress lowlifes like you who tell people off in the comments. I’m trying to get these writers to be better. They corrected the mistake, so clearly they respect my opinion more than they do yours. I guess that means you’re even more worthless. You are a freeloader yourself: you’re not paying for content here. No one is.
But you had to butt in because you’re here to be a WHITE KNIGHT! Defending the writers from people like me on your most honorable internet crusade! No one is impressed. May god have mercy on your soul.

It must be really bad for max to be missing this start. I remember last time Max was having neck issues he threw a pitch and then just walked off the mound. Would have been worse for him to push it and hurt the team

Actually, he was laying down sacrifice bunts during batting practice, when one got him in the face…

Why? If t doesn’t go to the 7th game then why do that?

denistaylor
Woke up with morning is technically not incorrect. Could have woken up during the night or in afternoon.
Cmurphy
I think the point is that it’s missing some words. Should be woke up with in the morning.
denistaylor
My point is that “with morning” is an expression, though used mostly in novels, as in “with morning he felt better.” Now I’ll move on…
richt
Sheesh. It’s definitely incorrect, and you mean “in the afternoon”
GarryHarris
He’s not Max Scherzer; Joe Ross may not be so bad. He’s a pitch to contact pitcher who doesn’t give up many HRs. The Astros haven’t seen much of him If the Astros go with the pitch, they’ll make short work of Ross. If they go for the fences, they will look bad failing.
MoRivera 1999
Alvarez hit a homer in the second inning.
Steven Juris
And Correa in the 4th.
Balboni
The fact that not one of the Astros hitters has ever faced Ross has to be beneficial, Cole and verlander are wearing as they’ve been pushed all post season
MoRivera 1999
The way the Nats are hitting it won’t take many runs on Ross for the Stros to win.
towinagain
And…part two of the Wil Myers trade makes his WS debut. Yes, Trea Turner and Joe Ross were traded for Wil Myers. That said, wished I could have seen Him and Tyson pitch for the Padres. Tyson, when healthy was very good and Joe may have better stuff. That said, rooting for the guy!
angt222
Maybe he will be healthy for Game 7 but i’m going to say, Astros in 6.
VonPurpleHayes
If they lose the series, people are going to point to this injury, but the real turning point was game 4. Corbin vs the Astros bullpen was a must win. Losing that gave the Stros all the momentum.
Astros are too good of a team to count out at any point; down 0-2, I knew they’d make it a series, but I do hope games 5 and 6 are split. I want this to go 7. It’s been a fun series.
SoCalBrave
it makes me so upset to see the gNats playing in the WS… they don’t deserve to be there. It should be the Braves getting their butts kicked by the Astros!
Sid Bream
I’d love the Nationals to win for the veterans of the team like Kendrick, Suzuki, Scherzer, Sanchez, and at the same time I’d love the fools who bought political signs to the game and sat behind home plate to feel what it’s like to be losers. Don’t mix politics and sport and bring political signs to baseball games, let alone World Series games-losers-(those that brought political signs to a World Series game when your team needs your support and to win at least 1 game at home). Pathetic ‘fans’.
PeeWeeGaskins
u mad bro? They making fun of your daddy?
Sid Bream
PeeWeeGaskins. No, but I am not pathetic as you appear to be, and I don’t have a PeeWee like you either. Have a nice day.
chippahawk
Stay classy Washington
Valkyrie
You did not SERIOUSLY just tell someone OTHER than Trump not to mix politics and sports did you?
its_happening
He did and he is right. Fans pay big money to support their team, not to heckle some guy in a pivotal World Series game. Dumb and dumber.
jdgoat
Teams love mixing it with sports, fans can as well. To think they weren’t supporting their team is not true at all. That’s just a weird thing to say.
its_happening
That had more to do with hatred than sports. They turned their attention off their team and toward 1 guy. That isn’t support. Not even close to support.
Pedro Cerrano's Voodoo
Why screw with Stras’ schedule, save the Scherzer bullet for game 7.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Strasburg pitches like the ace he is in Game 6. All the chips will be in the pot for an exciting Game 7. Sir Max comes out firing bullets and Nats win it all. Strike up the band and start the parade.
Sid Bream
Justin Verlander will have a say in that, just a little….
its_happening
Sid Bream was correct; Up 2-0 coming home and headlines about Trump not throwing the first pitch is announced. Team and/or media can take the blame for that. No reason to make that a story. Headlines should have been “Underdog Nats looking to close out first WS win since 1924”.
Then we roll into Game 5 where there’s more press about Trump. Why? He arrives, the fans take their attention away from the team and suddenly Houston jumps all over Ross. Trump effect? How about bad fans.
Nats fans….you do not know when you will be back in the World Series. Next time try cheering on your team instead of unleashing your teen angst toward the President. It’s about baseball and it’s about the game. The players on the field have grinded hard to get there and that’s the thanks they get? Players deserved better than that.
macstruts
That’s a good post. Well done.
chippahawk
Well said, the haters have gotten so old in this country. Many people WERE NOT happy with obama during his time being president or with his antics, but did people publicly protest him and did the media go out their way to negatively cover him 99% of the time?? No, quite the contrary so its time to grow up haters and accept the system and this democracy.
its_happening
I want to watch a baseball game and if I were a paying patron for a very pivotal Game 5 – the LAST home game for my home team I would have been ticked off. The antics were embarrassing and unnecessary.
Hypothetical here, but what if certain free agents are Trump supporters? Or their parents are Trump supporters? Do these players really want politics displayed in the middle of a World Series game like that? Even non-supporters may have felt uncomfortable in that ballpark. The fact we are even discussing this is a problem. That’s on the fans and the media. The media has skated on this. They stirred this up starting before Game 3.
Rex Block
Next time try cheering on your team instead of unleashing your teen angst toward the President.
We can do both, thank you.
gotigers68
Couldn’t have happened to a better guy !
Go Verlander !
Bobbig
It is too bad for Nats fans that Max has that issue, probably will not pitch – just the prep throwing etc will prohibit..plus it will be a distraction thinking about the issue..I know first hand about those nerve issues not a quick fix, the back, neck, nerve all the same since they affect your spinal cord. I couldn’t golf for 6 months
GoldenArm
I think the Cats POSSIBLY could have talked Max into getting an extra 3 days of rest, knowing that Cole was probably going to beat them last night. My thought is, they figured Strasburg would beat Verlander who has lost his last 3 starts, to even up the series, even if they lost last night, which they did. So Cole is out of the series, Verlander is very gettable, and Max with 7 days rest will beat Greinke in Game 7. Course, I’m mostly a paranoid conspiracy theorist, so I doubt it’s true. But should it work out that way, and the Nats take this in 7, you heard it here first.
Rex Block
From your mouth to God’s ear …
angt222
Likely starter if the WS goes to 7 but I could see him making a long relief appearance in game 6 if needed. I’d say under that scenario, Sanchez would start game 7 with Corbin available out of the pen.
Rex Block
I love reading these comments — the ones that are burying the Nats — after having crushed the Astros. It makes for great reading this lovely morning!
