The Marlins have decided to retain manager Don Mattingly, but will make several changes to his coaching staff. Catching coach Brian Schneider and bullpen coach Dean Treanor will both depart, per MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro (via Twitter).
At this point, it’s not entirely clear whether any other changes will be made. The organization is still making its final calls on the remainder of the coaching staff, per Frisaro, with “several … expected back.” Bench coach Tim Wallach had already decided to leave of his own volition.
Schneider, a former big league receiver, has been in his role since the start of the 2016 season. The 42-year-old’s only other non-playing experience came as a minor-league manager in the Miami organization.
As for Treanor, he has a long history of working as a minor-league pitching coach and Triple-A manager. He had served as the bullpen coach for three seasons under Mattingly.
Ibanez for bench coach?
I would like that but I’d see if Posada interested.
Bench coach is usually the most experienced guy in the dugout, perhaps save for the Manager. Most are usually ex-managers. Mattingly was a teammate of Willie Randolph’s for awhile. And Jeter enjoyed many years with Randolph as a coach of his. Why not Willie Randolph? I think he deserves another shot at managing, this would be a good way to return to the MLB scene.
If Ibañez isn’t interested in managing at this point, then he isn’t going for a bench coach role.
It’d be some sort of nice PR way to make up for letting Andre Dawson and Tony Perez go. Cuban American and a local product. Now if we can bring Mike Lowell in, that can make up for Jeff Conine.
Congrats to the Marlins who will win their next postseason series before the Braves will.
Braves time to rebuild because the current team is not good.
Rotfl. Thanks for the laughs.
Which banned account did this guy used to post under?
Their acct name: Lettuce’s healthier sister
Like it really matters how many changes they make. They will still suck
Must be tough seeing your state choke away titles after titles for 25 years 🙁
Has Mike Hill been booted out yet? That’s the only management news I am really interested in with the Marlins this offseason. Otherwise, I’m more interested in knowing which kids seriously have a shot to make the team out of Spring Training.
