While there hasn’t been any word about the Padres conducting formal interviews for their vacant managerial position, the belief is they’re looking at four to five candidates for the job, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Rangers player development field coordinator Jayce Tingler is among those in the mix, per Acee.
The Padres are reportedly “expected” to select an experienced manager to replace Andy Green (they’ve been connected to ex-MLB skippers Ron Washington, Joe Maddon, Ron Washington, Brad Ausmus and Buck Showalter). However, having a built-in rapport with general manager A.J. Preller, who’s leading the search, could prove to be of greater importance. Washington, the Braves’ third base coach, managed the Rangers when Preller was in their front office from 2007-14. According to Acee, Preller developed a deep respect for Washington during that period, in which the Rangers made three trips to the playoffs and won a pair of American League championships.
Preller also knows Tingler from Texas, as the latter has worked in various coaching and front office positions with the organization dating back to 2007. The 38-year-old Tingler has no experience as a major league skipper, though the Rangers did consider hiring him last offseason before choosing Chris Woodward. Tingler’s currently managing in the Dominican Winter League.

It won’t be Maddon
imindless
Fact.
DrDan75
Padres fans had better buckle up for the start of the Brad Ausmus era. Or the “I was a crony of AJ Preller in Texas” era.
Maybe Ian Kinsler can be a player-manager next season.
lowtalker1
Dude will be dfa’d after World Series
DrDan75
Kindler wasn’t a bad player in his day. But his time has passed.

Clint Hurdle?

Padre’s choice , who will be who ever is cheapest that will be who they get! LOL
SDHotDawg
Nope. As much as the fans want an experienced manager with a backbone, I’m guessing it will be somebody who to serve as Preller’s puppet. Either a rookie, or somebody with very limited experience like Ausmus.

What happened to all that nonsensical bochy talk? Did the ceremony in san francisco re-introduce reality to padre fans? That bochy will be a hall of fame manager, as a giant.

Delusion and wishful thinking. It happens.

Bouchy wouldn’t be a champion in San Francisco without being in San Diego first
AngelDiceClay
Elaborate
SFGiants74
There is no u in his name. The Padres let him walk. Why would he want to go back.
Koamalu
The interview after the season was over when he said he would take a month and then decide if he wants to manage again was probably what stoked their hopes. The Padres need to have a manager in place before then.
Padre Mark
I’m thinking Washington will be the guy Tingler has no experience, Maddon to the Angels and I don’t see Buck? Girardi to Mets, Ross to Cubs, my predictions.
adshadbolt1
People forget that Washington was a really good manager and just got into some trouble in his personal life. One of if not the greatest infield coaches of all time could really help the padres young infielders
Show Me Your Tatis
He’s also anti-analytics, basically a kiss of death for anyone seeking a managing gig these days.
On top of all that, the Preller-Rangers connection has already been beaten to death, resurrected and then beaten to death again.
Wilford Brimley
Except he got sassy with Billy Beane-Pitt in that movie, so he’d have to tone down that attitude.
Dotnet22
It’s extremely hard.
Wilford Brimley
Doesn’t Preller understand that they have to hire a manager that the MLBTR commenters approve of? WE KNOW BEST! Even though we all want a different manager.
sufferforsnakes
They should hire Show Me Your Tatis. He knows all……
Show Me Your Tatis
Thanks buddy!
Wilford Brimley
Hmm, you make a convincing argument. I will post on a couple of Padres message boards to give you a shot, but you might have to abbreviate your name to fit it on the back of your jersey.

Girardi to the Cubs grew up in the area and sure he was a Cubs fan Maddon to the Angel’s probably washington or Ausmus to San Diego buck maybe to the Mets but see more Pittsburgh or maybe ross Pittsburgh
Koamalu
They have been connected with two different Ron Washingtons??
genre99
MLB could use Wally Backman.
Wilford Brimley
While I would love to see some prima donnas like Thor Syndergaard get thrown around a bit, I think MLB frowns upon Backman’s ways of dealing with people.

True!! Don’t try to post that opinion on Gaslamp Ball! The Preller sycophants will eat you alive. They think his rebuild should go on for another 5 years! It’s entertaining, but I think I’ve only posted once or twice since the Preller suspension. It ain’t worth it.

Padres hang on a little while longer! Dave Roberts could be looking for a job if Dodgers lose to Nationals or in World Series if they make it !

How did he catch the ball like that?

A Jayce Tingler hire would not go over well with the San Diego fan. No more Andy Green yes men. Who are they the Chargers? They might as well hire Mike McCoy to be the Padres head coach. Smh

Padre fans just care about having “best prospects” and thinking Machado is SUPERSTAR

Rod Barajas should be the next manager. The guys been in the organization the last 6 yrs spending 5 yrs as a manager in the minors and this past season as the bench coach.
If anyone knows the players in the system its Barajas. This is a guy that played a long time at the highest level at the most demanding position on the field. As a former catcher that has won a World Series he understands the pitching staff and their needs as well as an offensive approach. The Padres don’t need a sexy name they need a baseball lifer!
padreforlife
Barajas lol good luck with that
SDHotDawg
I just checked on something interesting. The last time the Padres hired an experienced manager was 1988. McKeon. Winning record.
I don’t think we need another rookie, and it doesn’t matter how well he knows the players. What matters is that he gets their respect.
Show Me Your Tatis
Trader Jack is one of the greatest baseball guys of our time. Not really a fair comparison. The manager’s success or lack thereof will not be dictated by his previous experience.
SDHotDawg
The point was the “last time the Padres hired an experienced manager.” It just happens that it was Trader Jack. Not really a comparison.
Show Me Your Tatis
There is no Trader Jack available right now. If there was, do you really think this front office would be smart enough to hire him?
SDHotDawg
I do not.

Rod is likeable but can he motivate the ML players like he did in EP.. Rod showed in the last nine games he went 1-8 he did some switching of lefty vs righty, defensive replacments, etc. Sitting Manny down for several games was needed and even Hosmer sitting out some games at the end. If they do go with Rod B. I’d keep the contract to no more than two years with an option on the third year. If he gets the team into the playoffs the first or second year the third year automaticaly kicks in.

VegasSDfan
You already said this above.
SDHotDawg
Yup. Hit the button twice. Sorry.
SDHotDawg
Why the Padres won’t choose a strong or experienced manager:
Because the greatest tool a manager has to motivate, teach, and sometimes even discipline his players is the lineup card. Preller dictates who plays what position, where they bat, and how often. Even the starting rotation is his. No experienced manager would give up his greatest tool.
(Shamelessly stolen from a post on another site. But it makes sense.)
VegasSDfan
Your source is fox news?
nowheretogobutup
I totally agree with SDhotdawg Preller is looking for a puppet to manage few former Mgr’s will say yes to that.
MikePLV10
How do you consider Washington or Wiess for a managerial job when they sat there and let snitker set a rotation with Soroka as the #3 starter in NLDS!!
nowheretogobutup
Its going to be Ron Washington or Brad Ausmas, both are on the cheap and both would allow AJ to dictate who to play and the batting order on a day to day. Personally I think Ron W. is too old at this point and has lost some of his fire and Brad is coming off of two teams he managed Detroit and Angels with losing overll records.
I’d prefer Buck or Joe G. but Preller couldn’t manage these two, they have their own way of managing and that’s not Preller’s way. Mark Loretta has some fire and his comments on Sports radio were quite uplifting and well spoken. He’s more of a throw back and that could hurt his chances.
SDHotDawg
I’d really like to see Showalter. Maybe Ron Washington. But I don’t see Preller going with either one of those guys for previously stated reasons.
Show Me Your Tatis
Wouldn’t hate Showalter but it’s already been said that he’s not being considered. Washington is anti-analytics and the Preller-Rangers connection is played out so that’s a no from me.
Hopeful for Loretta but not optimistic about it.
SDHotDawg
I’d like to see a manager with a track record, but I don’t think it’s going to happen. We’re probably destined to get another rookie, or relatively inexperienced guy like Ausmus who will follow Preller’s directions and spreadsheet.
