Cubs first base coach Will Venable interviewed with the Giants on Friday for their managerial vacancy, Henry Schulman and John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle report. He had previously been rumored to be of interest to the San Francisco organization.
Venable, who’ll turn 37 at the end of the month, wrapped up a solid big-league career in 2016. Since, the Princeton grad has worked in the Cubs organization, serving as the first base coach on Joe Maddon’s staff.
With this reported interview, the Giants are now known to have held first-round meet-and-greets with at least seven candidates to take over the managerial seat vacated by Bruce Bochy. Venable is also reportedly under consideration to take over for Maddon in Chicago.

I think a few of these guys are gonna be offered positions in the organization. Farhan is building a staff. And it’s another rebuilding year. With an eye towards the wild card if all goes right.
I’m torn between Venable & Kotsay.
Kotsay is not sexy to me at all.
And Venable might be too green. At least for me…
Kapler needs more seasoning in the minors as a manager. Or could be groomed with maybe Venable on the major league staff for a few seasons.
Maybe Muelens for a few seasons might work out. Two years and option for a third. If they do managerial options. If he emerges as a leader, Great. If not in two seasons a lot of the vets are off the books. And here we go again. Building upward.
Farhan’s not on any hot seat. Far from it. !
CrewBrew
not sexy?
too green?
dude wtf are you talking about?
yaow 2
Not sexy = Not a popular and established manager. Joe Maddon or Joe Girardi.
Too green = not enough experience to do a manager’s job. Needs more “seasoning”.
clepto
yaow, save your keystrokes.
yes, we all knew what Jay meant except the Crewbrew. Similarly, Crewbrew’s mother had to debate a “few little points” so he didnt have to attend a special school.
“Mrs Crewbrew, your son is riiighht about here. The state requires minimum of 80 to attend public school. He’s gonna have to go to a special school.”

Tell me, JayRider, what exactly are the qualities you seek in a field manager, and which of those qualities do Venable and Kotsay, respectively, possess? I should ask as well, how do you know that these two candidates possess the qualities you attribute to them?
JayRyder
It depends on what they’re looking for. Within the short term. And my Guess is to continue to try contending, for the ticket sales and merchandise. While also moving out older contracts for younger more athletic players. This we all know.
It might be ok to hire a younger manager Right Now. But I’d think that would be slightly cashing in some wins. And if wins is gonna keep Bum and Smith in the fold. And attendance, Venable might be too young for this position. At least right now. Kotsay has more experience with his tenure in Oakland. I just don’t think he’d be up to par with the leagues best. Or maybe too much of a Kapler type. Very strong and younger on experience. I don’t know, it’s all speculation on my part. And I’m not hiring. I’d want more of a experienced type than a younger analytic type. I’m on the fence with Kotsay. If hired I’d give a chance, considering the new age help coming from the front office Directly into the dugout. What is to be expected with Farhan. Which is ok. I’d rather go Kapler if that’s the case. And I don’t think Kapler is ready as a field manager. But they can groom him with the experience within the organization. If he’d agree to that.
If any of the candidates is a catcher. That’s a huge boost in my book. Especially for a younger manager types. But if the candidates don’t Wow, you still have Muelens who has tons of experience right there to use. He’s Worked with Bochy, has managered teams before. Knows analytics. Might be ok to see what He has for a few seasons. And if it doesn’t work out. There are always other candidates becoming available. . .
Might be smart to groom a few guys within the organization in case Muelens wouldn’t work. As options. Farhan likes his farm system. Why not do it with coaches or even managers. . .
There you go.
rightyspecialist
‘Continue to try contending ‘ huh…..they just booked their 3rd consecutive season below .500. That is not ‘trying to contend’ Bumgarner and Smith. Lol . Those guys are Gone. They are not seriously going to go hard on either guy. Furthermore, Even if they made a semi serious run at Bumgarner, he won’t re-sign in Frisco. No way. He likes pitching in October. The Giants are 4-5 year away from being legit. He’s entering his age 31 season, his agent will find him a home w a contender. Atlanta, NY, Philadelphia, LA
rightyspecialist
Wild card? Lol. Dude this isn’t 2014, you need a lot of talent to earn an NL Wild Card spot. Did you even watch the NL Wild Card game this year. The Giants are multiple years away from having the talent that Washington or St. Louis has. If you want to practice optimism, try focusing on finishing above .500
ghostrobot
2022 at the earliest
JayRyder
Specialist Huh. ?
I think I remember you.
So I’m gonna give a response that you can filter how you filter. – Stating you need a lot of talent to gain a wild card entry is pretty obvious. You need talent to win games. No points there.
The Giants had an eye towards a wild card, even just this year. As did the Reds and multiple other teams as well. There is nothing wrong with having an eye towards Winning. Or maybe you just like losing. Not sure.
And as far as what I watch. It’s none of your business what I watch. But I like watching winning ballclubs. And that’s exactly what the Giants are trying to do. Become a winning ballclub.
P.S. They also won the wild card in 2016. Ha. !
Here you go. You got your response. Work it out.
sleepyfloyd
The Giants are barely going to be a 500 club next season, so mentioning a WC is a waste of time
ABStract
Why isn’t it worth mentioning?
They were barely a .500 team but were in the wildcard hunt for much of this year…sooooo?
azcrook
Ron Wotus is still the best for the Giants.
Very experienced and had been very successful as a minor league manager. He would be very well received by the SF free agents who are awaiting the new manager pick and his appointment would help maintain the extremely important chemistry aspect for the team and the fans.
gmenfan
I feel that theres zero chance that Zaidi goes from within the organization, and that Wotus and Muelens were courtesy interviews more or less. It seems like the new Giants FO wants as hard of a reset as possible.
rightyspecialist
Yes, those will never get the keys to the car. Zaidi wasn’t hired to maintain the status quo. He was hired to fix the current losing culture
rightyspecialist
‘Maintain the extremely important chemistry ‘ wtf? This is a team the just booked it’s 3rd consecutive losing season. What the hell are you talking about ?
jdan74
I’m too sexy for Milan, too sexy for Milan…..New York and Japan.
snotrocket
It would be great if they can get someone in place by the end of the world series.
sleepyfloyd
And why would that be genius? There is absolutely no need to rush anything and perhaps they want to talk to candidates still in the ps
Deke
Given that there’s a lot of managerial openings I would think it makes sense to make a quick decision or the right manager might be snapped up already.
Now one could argue that “the right manager” would wait or at least let them know they are about to make a decision and another club has offered them a job… but we don’t know what each of the managers care about. They might appreciate teams that are decisive, they might take a bird in the hand.
I’m a Giants fan but I think all things being equal a manager might prefer other clubs over SF because they look better primed for the playoffs.
So it would be SMART to find the best candidate and lock them in before another club does. It would also be GREAT so I’m with snotrocket despite the gross name.
Show Me Your Tatis
They should go get Whitey Herzog
lowtalker1
What about Connie Mack?
graysondecker
Or Stubby Clapp?
alexmiller6677
Nah, Joe Cronin is the man for the job.
batty
I’m ready for all the manger’s positions to be filled so fans can either gloat over the choices or throw tantrums over them.
jimmy ray hart
Venable grad from Princeton!
Let’s get a smart manager … need that to keep up with the ever changing game
wiggysf
Personally I’m in favor of Quatraro or Espada, because of the success former rays and astros coaches have had recently. That might be bad reasoning but I’d be satisfied with either.
Frisco500
I’d like to see Espada or maybe even Quatraro if the dont stay inhouse with Wotus. Not sure about Will Venable but it’s kinda cool that his dad is an ex-SF Giant. No one ever mentions.
snotrocket
Kruik and Kuip mention it every time he is on TV. I don’t know if I can handle them saying “Max and Mollie’s kid” like 30 times a game.
ABStract
Agreed, it’s their favorite thing to talk about
jdan74
I’ve gotta be honest, I don’t understand this whole Will Venable possible manager fascination.
bravesfan
This is a guy who could stay in the league for forever and be bad. Lol riddle me that
