Oct 15: Stanton is out the lineup once again for Game 3. Said manager Aaron Boone, as relayed in a tweet from MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch: “[Stanton] wants to play. But we’ve also had some real conversations about, you’ve got to be honest with where you’re at. I mean, there is an injury in there.”
Oct 13: Giancarlo Stanton isn’t in the Yankees’ lineup for Game 2 of the ALCS due to a quad strain, manager Aaron Boone told James Wagner of the New York Times (Twitter links) and other reporters. Cameron Maybin will take Stanton’s spot in left field for tonight’s game.
Stanton suffered the injury while beating out an infield single in the second inning of Game 1, though it wasn’t serious enough for him to stop playing. In fact, Stanton even homered in a later at-bat, before finally being replaced by Maybin prior to the bottom of the eighth (seemingly just for defensive purposes). A post-game MRI, however, revealed the strain, hence Stanton’s absence from the lineup. He could still potentially come off the bench to pinch-hit, or play in case of an emergency situation. Boone was hopeful that the slugger would return to the starting nine at some point in the series, perhaps as early as Game 3 if Monday’s off-day provided enough time for Stanton to heal up.
2019 has already been an injury-marred season for Stanton, who played in only 18 games due to a variety of biceps, calf, shoulder, and knee problems, most notably a strained PCL in his right knee. In the wake of such a year (not to mention Stanton’s lengthy injury history in past seasons), this day-to-day quad issue looms larger for him than it would for most other players. To be fair, Boone could be engaging in a bit of gamesmanship against the Astros by not putting any sort of timeline on Stanton’s return, though it also could be that the Yankees themselves are being as cautious as possible with the outfielder’s status. If Stanton is removed from the ALCS roster due to injury, he would be ineligible for the World Series if New York were to advance.
With Stanton sidelined, the Yankees have four outfielders (Aaron Judge, Brett Gardner, Aaron Hicks, and Maybin) remaining on their roster, with Hicks himself only just returning from a late-season elbow injury.
Should’ve kept Voit.
To play where? He would still be on the bench,if they should’ve kept anybody it should’ve been Wade for his versatility
To start at 1B
Over DJ????
Ursela should not be starting. DJ should be at third.
Voit is no different than Stanton. When you spend too much time in the weight room, these are the types of injuries you’ll continue to get. Too much bulking up.
Stanton smokes and jokes during pregame stretching while Gardner is locked in.
Stanton’s core is so tight, he will continue to have these issues until something rips and his contract becomes the greatest cautionary tale in the history of big money sluggers.
He won an MVP in his contract span. That’s enough to make it worth it.
Nope, won the MVP wearing a Marlins uniform. That jersey won’t go to the Hall of Fame even if Stanton reverses this bad health trend.
Humongous contracts should go to a guy if you want your organization to be tied to his historically significant career.
He’s not a hall of famer, not even close.
Anyone surprised?
Guys almost 30 and the Yanks get eight more years of him.
That’s why when they offer Cole they should be careful. Even though SP is their biggest weakness, they would be offering for what he has done, not what he will do.
If any team does what you say, Cole will sign elsewhere.
You “overpay” a guy like Cole to hopefully win a few championships. That is a premium you have to pay for a guy who can be the difference maker.
wow he’s absolutely made out of glass now. hope that contract is insured.
Bigger fraud than A-rod
Could you please elaborate? Just curious as to how either player is a fraud .
Either Player. ?
I cannot speak for the OP, and I do not think Stanton is a fraud. But A-Rod is kind of obvious, no? Steroids. Slapping balls out of gloves. For all we know he was cheating his entire career.
You knew what the Yankees were going to get into if they traded for Stanton. Great when he is healthy, but from 2012 to 2016, he only averaged 115 games a season.
fraud? more than A-Rod? how is he a fraud for being injured, or more of one than a guy who was a well-known PED user.
Sweet…now we have a 2 man bench with Tyler Lyons in the bullpen!
Hope you’re ready Yankees fans. Expect this stop-start routine for the next 8-9 years.
What exactly is his contract status? I read the Marlins signed him to a 13 year $325 million contract a couple years before he was traded to the Yanks. Someone on this site said that the Yanks actually extended him beyond that when they acquired him. This guy is pretty similar in age to Jason Heyward and was considered a less than prospect in comparison at the time. Obviously Stanton is way better then Heyward but I would assume it means they are at least close to the same age. Heyward has been bombed out and depleted for years now. How much longer do the Yanks have to pay Giancarlo $25 mill a year and how old is he now? I feel like whatever the answer is it is gonna be bad news. For a long time.
He’s signed through 2027 at the entirely reasonable $25m per year with a team option for 2028.
The MRI scan came back confirming that he’s made of delicate biscuits.
To reply to myself & to be fair to Stanton he played 315 games in 2017-8 combined. 300 HRs by age 28 is pretty incredible..
no, more like 1 ply toilet paper
The Marlins back loaded the contract, they knew they’d be trading him. Marlins are paying $30m for the rest of the deal, his base salaries are pretty ridiculous:
2020 $26,000,000 (may opt out after this season, no way he does)
2021 $29,000,000
2022 $29,000,000
2023 $32,000,000
2024 $32,000,000
2025 $32,000,000
2026 $29,000,000
2027 $25,000,000
2028 $25,000,000 (Yankees may buy out final year for $10m)
Wow. 8 more years. . .
Well my friends. That’s a DH if I ever saw one Moving Forward…
He played DH most of last season
Marlins paid up front for the back loaded years we are paying 25 mil a year
I think he just turned 30, no? He’s been injury prone, but some have been fluky getting hit in the face, etc. I think judge and Sanchez are just as worrisome on the injury front.
Astros in 7
This guy is a joke. Cash regrets that deal, prolly.
Worst deal cash ever made
Jacoby Ellsbury just left the comment section.
Cashman is a complete joke. For a team that’s spends as much as the Yankees only to have 1 World Series championship in the last 17 years is pathetic. This year will be more of the same. I highly doubt they get past the Astros. Even if they do they have Scherzer/Strasburg/Corbin waiting to spank them and send them to bed without milk and cookies.
“Balsa Wood” Stanton
I know the Giants outfield is still pretty bad, but I’m grateful Stanton wouldn’t waive his no trade to come to SF with how ridiculously fragile he is.
I was just thinking that.
Thank God Baer has no decisional baring on Baseball Ops anymore. Or at least enough to facilitate a trade for a big contract like this. Baer was even going heavy in on Harper.
Glad Farhan makes the choices now. At least For now. We’ll see how he does. So far pretty good I’d say. !
P.s I was heavy on Harper too. Knowing they needed a Heavy hitting three or four. But I maxed out at ten years if they were gonna do it. And I even knew that was about three years too long. . .
Harper makes sense from a marketing standpoint alone. I can see why Giants would have been willing to pay heavy for him.
Yep. Classic Barry Bonds replacement senario.
Stanton too.
Decisional baring? That is funny. When it comes to okaying big contracts Baer is the one making the decision. All Farhan does in big deals is come to Baer to ask if he can make the deal. He does not make the the decision.
Ironic how the first year after Harper leaves the Nationals are most likely headed to the World Series.
Dang. Didn’t realize how many G Stanton haters there are.
I wouldn’t call (all) of them haters.
Dude could be the best player to ever take the field but therein lies the rub…
he has to actually take the field
There will always be some people who believe that a frequently injured player like Stanton, Cespedes, or Ellsbury or one who is diminished by age and injuries like Cabrera or Pujols who has a big, long contract is lazy or not keeping in shape or fragile or just cashing the checks and not trying. They haven’t played. They don’t know what it takes to be a major leaguer and what it may cost physically. It’s all conjecture and resentment on their part.
And a guy who missed a lot of games
I know I would love to go to my job once in awhile and get rock star pay.
Does this really shock anyone? Yeah, I didn’t think so.
OF COURSE!
Is there insurance on his contract?
Their insurance broker may be the real team MVP!
The insurance broker for NY may be the real MVP of the team!

The guy earning $325 MM to perform deserves our sympathy when he doesn’t perform. Consistently.
Ellsbury.2
Suspicious fake injuries never end with this team.
Why would they fake an injury with a guy that hit an important HR the night before?
Jacoby Ellsbury all over again.
I’ve just named him Mr. Full Moon since he comes out once a month, you’re lucky if you see him twice a month.
Paxton’s our in the third inning with a strained binky.
Well Dh him in game 3 and sit encarnacion because he’s doing zero right now. I think gio has a better chance of hitting Cole since he’s seen him more
Just read a Judge comment in the MLB game summary. Judge says the Yankees had the Astros on the ropes all night? Were we watching the same game?
The Astros looked much better at the plate. Tons of line drive outs. Gurriel hit in especially tough luck. If Alvarez could even put the ball in play, this game wouldn’t have been that close.
Yeah, the Yanks had a run thrown out at the plate. But no guarantee they would have scored that run, if he had been held. There were still two outs.
Astros left a cumulative 22 runners on while the Yankees only left 12. Yanks got one swing from Judge and that was it.
Good thing about 2019 was IT PROVED YANKEES DONT NEED STANTON. They had their best year in more than a decade, and they killed it WITHOUT STANTON. Bench him and bring Voit, great clutch hitter and he can make pitchers work a lot and draw some walks. Even at the end of the season during that wrong call “slump” he was hitting the ball hard. ENCARNACION & SANCHEZ will be the reason why Yankees will lose this series. Write my words. . It was a horrible idea to bench Voit, Also. WHY TO KEEP SABATHIA ? ONLY TO PICH 1 BATTER ? Does that make any sense ?
WHAT makes LESS sense is why you put CAPS for A good PORTION OF this POST!!!!
They call him Mr. Glass.
When the Guppies were going to move Stanton, I was pulling for the Phillies to go all out and get him.
I am so glad I didn’t fish my wish!!!
Giancarlo “Glass” Stanton. LOL. What a waste of money…………SMH
So… The Yanks vs The Nats?
The Subpoenas Series?
Dude is weak.
Dudes made of glass.
I hate to say this, but I’m really hoping the Yankees get burned for having such a short bench. Don’t want to root for injuries, so I’ll hope a couple of position players get thrown out of the game.
Not out of anti-Yankee sentiment, but because it makes me crazy the way bullpens are being used in baseball these days.
Stanton “wants” to play. Pure public relations. If he “wanted” to play he’d have kept his mouth shut and played.
I fear Judge will turn into Giancarlo as he gets a bit older and those huge parts are exposed more and more. I certainly don’t WANT anything to happen to Judge, but I think he’ll end up getting screwed by the time he’s eligible for legitimate free agency because he’ll have a history of those constant oblique strains, etc. I hope not, as I’d love to see how he stacks up after a few more healthy seasons, but I’m worried for him.
Judge’s problem is that he will be 31 when he becomes a FA. And, while he is a surprisingly good fielder, I’m not sure he can maintain that past 31. And since Stanton will be locked in at DH, I’m not sure the NYY will be inclined to pay up for him.
That’s by design, isn’t it? Six years of team control then…
Dude is made of glass.
HOW has that contract gone for NY. YANKESS LOSE , YANKEES LOSE THEEEEEEEEE YANNNNNNKKKKKKKEEEEEEES LOSE
Wow, this guy has been worth the $$$, huh? Lol!!
It’s mind boggling how teams continue to pay for these part time players in the hopes that within a 10 contract they will deliver maybe one championship.i guess I got a better shot in hitting lotto than Giancarlo living to a portion of his contract….
